Using Slow-Fast Dynamical Systems To Understand Regime Shifts In Ecology, Ting-Hao Hsu Oct 2019

Using Slow-Fast Dynamical Systems To Understand Regime Shifts In Ecology, Ting-Hao Hsu

Mathematics Colloquium Series

In ecology, regime shifts are continual rapid change between different long-lasting dynamics. For instance, rapid evolutionary changes have been observed in a wide variety of organisms, both in predators and in prey. Another example is disease outbreak, where a system exhibits qualitative changes after long periods of apparent quiescence. Using the theory of slow-fast dynamics, for systems of differential equations with sufficiently large separation of time scales we derive conditions under which regime shifts occur. This is joint work with Shigui Ruan and Gail Wolkowicz.

Why A Classification Based On Linear Approximation To Dynamical Systems Often Works Well In Nonlinear Cases, Julio Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2019

Why A Classification Based On Linear Approximation To Dynamical Systems Often Works Well In Nonlinear Cases, Julio Urenda, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It can be proven that linear dynamical systems exhibit either stable behavior, or unstable behavior, or oscillatory behavior, or transitional behavior. Interesting, the same classification often applies to nonlinear dynamical systems as well. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this phenomenon, i.e., we explain why a classification based on linear approximation to dynamical systems often works well in nonlinear cases.

Controllability And Observability Of Linear Nabla Discrete Fractional Systems, Tilekbek Zhoroev Oct 2019

Controllability And Observability Of Linear Nabla Discrete Fractional Systems, Tilekbek Zhoroev

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The main purpose of this thesis to examine the controllability and observability of the linear discrete fractional systems. First we introduce the problem and continue with the review of some basic definitions and concepts of fractional calculus which are widely used to develop the theory of this subject. In Chapter 3, we give the unique solution of the fractional difference equation involving the Riemann-Liouville operator of real order between zero and one. Additionally we study the sequential fractional difference equations and describe the way to obtain the state-space repre- sentation of the sequential fractional difference equations. In Chapter 4, we …

Toward Greater Reproducibility Of Undergraduate Behavioral Science Research, Bruce Evan Blaine Oct 2019

Toward Greater Reproducibility Of Undergraduate Behavioral Science Research, Bruce Evan Blaine

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

Reproducibility crises have arisen in psychology and other behavioral sciences, spurring efforts to ensure research findings are credible and replicable. Although reforms are occurring at professional levels in terms of new publication parameters and open science initiatives, the credibility and reproducibility of undergraduate research deserves attention. Undergraduate behavioral science research projects that rely on small convenience samples of participants, overuse hypothesis testing for drawing meaning from data, and engage in opaque statistical computing are vulnerable to producing nonreproducible findings. These vulnerabilities are reviewed, and practical recommendations for improving the credibility and reproducibility of undergraduate behavioral science research are offered.

Beauty, Bees, And God: The Fibonacci Sequence As A Theological Springboard In Secondary Mathematics, John D. Brahier Oct 2019

Beauty, Bees, And God: The Fibonacci Sequence As A Theological Springboard In Secondary Mathematics, John D. Brahier

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic schools primarily should be in the business of making saints. This article identifies and explores a meaningful, engaging point of contact between mathematics and theology for high school math classes, the Fibonacci Sequence. This sequence serves as an engaging introduction to sequences and series; more importantly, the topic can be used as a springboard to theological discussions. The paper will provide a brief historical background to the Fibonacci Sequence, an explanation of how it can be used in a high school math classroom, and an exploration of three different theological touchpoints that the Fibonacci Sequence offers.

Diffusion And Consensus On Weakly Connected Directed Graphs, J. J. P. Veerman, Ewan Kummel Oct 2019

Diffusion And Consensus On Weakly Connected Directed Graphs, J. J. P. Veerman, Ewan Kummel

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let G be a weakly connected directed graph with asymmetric graph Laplacian L. Consensus and diffusion are dual dynamical processes defined on G by x˙=−Lx for consensus and p˙=−pL for diffusion. We consider both these processes as well their discrete time analogues. We define a basis of row vectors {γ¯i}ki=1 of the left null-space of L and a basis of column vectors {γi}ki=1 of the right null-space of L in terms of the partition of G into strongly connected components. This allows for complete characterization of the asymptotic behavior of both diffusion and consensus --- discrete and continuous --- in …

Three-Dimensional Rotation Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Prolate Spheroids In Simple Shear And Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang Oct 2019

Three-Dimensional Rotation Of Paramagnetic And Ferromagnetic Prolate Spheroids In Simple Shear And Uniform Magnetic Field, Christopher A. Sobecki, Yanzhi Zhang, Cheng Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We examine a time-dependent, three-dimensional rotation of magnetic ellipsoidal particles in a two-dimensional, simple shear flow and a uniform magnetic field. We consider that the particles have paramagnetic and ferromagnetic properties, and we compare their rotational dynamics due to the strengths and directions of the applied uniform magnetic field. We determine the critical magnetic field strength that can pin the particles' rotations. Above the critical field strength, the particles' stable steady angles were determined. In a weak magnetic regime (below the critical field strength), a paramagnetic particle's polar angle will oscillate toward the magnetic field plane while its azimuthal angle …

An Optimal Edg Method For Distributed Control Of Convection Diffusion Pdes, X. Zhang, Y. Zhang, John R. Singler Oct 2019

An Optimal Edg Method For Distributed Control Of Convection Diffusion Pdes, X. Zhang, Y. Zhang, John R. Singler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose an embedded discontinuous Galerkin (EDG) method to approximate the solution of a distributed control problem governed by convection diffusion PDEs, and obtain optimal a priori error estimates for the state, dual state, their uxes, and the control. Moreover, we prove the optimize-then-discretize (OD) and discrtize-then-optimize (DO) approaches coincide. Numerical results confirm our theoretical results.

Mathematical Modeling Opportunities Reported By Secondary Mathematics Preservice Teachers And Instructors, Hyunyi Jung, Eryn Stehr, Jia He

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

Engaging with mathematical modeling can support learners to collaboratively explore mathematics in integrated ways as well as generate mathematical ideas and representations that may be useful in everyday life. Although several studies provide diverse insights into teaching and learning mathematical modeling, research has yet to be conducted on the mathematical modeling learning opportunities available to secondary mathematics preservice teachers (PTs) in mathematics and education courses in teacher education programs. This study investigates the mathematical modeling learning opportunities reported by 48 instructors and ten focus groups of 37 PTs. Multiple data sources (e.g., interview transcripts, syllabi, tasks, and exams) collected from …

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Kareem Alanazi, Meshal Alshammari, Paul W. Eloe Oct 2019

Quasilinearization And Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Kareem Alanazi, Meshal Alshammari, Paul W. Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A quasilinearization algorithm is developed for boundary value problems at resonance. To do so, a standard monotonicity condition is assumed to obtain the uniqueness of solutions for the boundary value problem at resonance. Then the method of upper and lower solutions and the shift method are applied to obtain the existence of solutions. A quasilinearization algorithm is developed and sequences of approximate solutions are constructed, which converge monotonically and quadratically to the unique solution of the boundary value problem at resonance. Two examples are provided in which explicit upper and lower solutions are exhibited.
