Scaling Of Spectra Of Cantor-Type Measures And Some Number Theoretic Considerations, Isabelle Kraus Jan 2017

Scaling Of Spectra Of Cantor-Type Measures And Some Number Theoretic Considerations, Isabelle Kraus

Honors Undergraduate Theses

We investigate some relations between number theory and spectral measures related to the harmonic analysis of a Cantor set. Specifically, we explore ways to determine when an odd natural number m generates a complete or incomplete Fourier basis for a Cantor-type measure with scale g.

12: Polar Path, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

12: Polar Path, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

PolarPath.nb allows the user to input any polar function and use a slider to see how the path is created. That is, it will allow the user to see the order in which the petals or loops are created.

02: Poly Basics 1, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

02: Poly Basics 1, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

PolyBasics1.nb deals with the graphs of polynomial functions of higher degrees. In this notebook, each factor is linear.

05: Limit Definition, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

05: Limit Definition, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

LimitDefinition.nb asks the user to input a function. Then use the vertical slider to change the size of E. An appropriate value of 8 will be given.

14: Polar Vs Rectangular Animation, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

14: Polar Vs Rectangular Animation, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

PolarVsRectangularAnimation.nb allows the user to input a polar function and then relates the graphs of r = ƒ(theta) and y = ƒ(x).

16: Sequences And Series, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

16: Sequences And Series, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

SequencesAndSeries.nb includes a couple of sections. The first asks the user to input a formula for a sequence. Then it generates a table of values for the sequence followed by a graph of the function. The second section does the same, though it shows the sequence as well as the sequence of partial sums.

15: Plotting S(N), Ruth Dover Jan 2017

15: Plotting S(N), Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

PlottingS(n).nb animates the second section of the preceding notebook. After inputting the formula for a sequence, this animates both the sequence itself and the sequence of partial sums together as n increases.

12: Parametric Path, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

12: Parametric Path, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

ParametricPath.nb allows the user to input parametrically defined curves and a domain for the parameter t. An example is given to show how the curve is traced out.

16: Seeing Series, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

16: Seeing Series, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

SeeingSeries.nb allows the user to enter an explicit formula for the terms of a sequence. Then it animates the pattern of the sequence of partial sums. This is particularly helpful to understand conditional convergence with alternating series, but it may be used on series with all positive terms, whether convergent or divergent.

06: Reciprocal Functions, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

06: Reciprocal Functions, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

ReciprocalFunctions.nb asks the user to input a function. The notebook will graph the original function and its reciprocal.

06: Random Riemann, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

06: Random Riemann, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

RandomRiemann.nb takes a function, values for xmin and xmax, and a number n that represents the number of rectangles desired. This will create random subintervals with random points inside each subinterval, and then it will draw the corresponding Riemann sum. Values for the approximation and the actual value of the integral are given. This allows students to see how close (or distant) the approximation is and to visualize a wide variety of Riemann sums. Increasing values of n should help students understand the limiting process more clearly.

17: Maclaurin Series, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

17: Maclaurin Series, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

MaclaurinSeries.nb gives animations for popular Maclaurin series. It shows the series with increasing values of n both graphically and analytically.

02: Derivative Approximation, Ruth Dover Jan 2017

02: Derivative Approximation, Ruth Dover

Mathematica Notebooks for Pre-Calculus and Calculus

DerivativeApproximation.nb contains two sections. Both allow the user to input a function and an x-window and to vary the center point. Then the value of h may be changed. The first section will show a symmetric approximation while the second shows a one-sided approximation.

Random Tropical Curves, Magda L. Hlavacek Jan 2017

Random Tropical Curves, Magda L. Hlavacek

HMC Senior Theses

In the setting of tropical mathematics, geometric objects are rich with inherent combinatorial structure. For example, each polynomial $p(x,y)$ in the tropical setting corresponds to a tropical curve; these tropical curves correspond to unbounded graphs embedded in $\R^2$. Each of these graphs is dual to a particular subdivision of its Newton polytope; we classify tropical curves by combinatorial type based on these corresponding subdivisions. In this thesis, we aim to gain an understanding of the likeliness of the combinatorial type of a randomly chosen tropical curve by using methods from polytope geometry. We focus on tropical curves corresponding to quadratics, …

Classifying The Jacobian Groups Of Adinkras, Aaron R. Bagheri Jan 2017

Classifying The Jacobian Groups Of Adinkras, Aaron R. Bagheri

HMC Senior Theses

Supersymmetry is a theoretical model of particle physics that posits a symmetry between bosons and fermions. Supersymmetry proposes the existence of particles that we have not yet observed and through them, offers a more unified view of the universe. In the same way Feynman Diagrams represent Feynman Integrals describing subatomic particle behaviour, supersymmetry algebras can be represented by graphs called adinkras. In addition to being motivated by physics, these graphs are highly structured and mathematically interesting. No one has looked at the Jacobians of these graphs before, so we attempt to characterize them in this thesis. We compute Jacobians through …

Studying “Moments” Of The Central Limit Theorem, Benjamin A. Stark Jan 2017

Studying “Moments” Of The Central Limit Theorem, Benjamin A. Stark

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The central limit theorem ranks high amongst the most important discoveries in the field of mathematics over the last three hundred years. This theorem provided a basis for approximation that turned the question of reaction into the art of prediction. This paper aims to map a course for the history and evolution of the famed theorem from its’ initial origins in 1733, from Abraham de Moivre’s inquiries to the most recent expressions of the theorem. The journey encompassing central limit theorem includes reformations of definition, relaxing of important associated conditions, and numerous types of rigorous proofs.

Critical Examination Of Ways Students Mirror The Teacher’S Classroom Practice: What Does It Mean To Be Successful At Mathematics?, Paula Guerra, Woong Lim Jan 2017

Critical Examination Of Ways Students Mirror The Teacher’S Classroom Practice: What Does It Mean To Be Successful At Mathematics?, Paula Guerra, Woong Lim

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, the authors report the mathematical learning experiences of “successful” female students in secondary mathematics classrooms taught by a “successful” teacher with the traditional mathematics’ behaviorist approach. The authors’ claim that the traditional view of mathematics held by the teacher and supported by the school system could not promote rigorous mathematics for girls to understand the importance of mathematical thinking as a foundation for success in mathematics-related professions. The authors recommend future studies creating opportunities for discussion in the field about the teacher’s view on mathematics, classroom practice, and how these resonate with girls’ experiences of learning mathematics.

Coherence And Enrichment Across The Middle And Secondary Levels: Four Mathematically Authentic Learning Experiences, Keith A. Nabb, Jaclyn M. Murawska Jan 2017

Coherence And Enrichment Across The Middle And Secondary Levels: Four Mathematically Authentic Learning Experiences, Keith A. Nabb, Jaclyn M. Murawska

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This article discusses four mathematically rich settings with origins in the elementary, middle, and secondary school curricula. Depending on the questions asked and the connections made within each setting, the problem spaces allow the instructor to import tools leading to sophisticated extensions appropriate for college-level study. These topics include the Heaviside function, randomness, symmetry, modular arithmetic, the generalized Pythagorean Theorem, and the theory of groups. Given the potentially extensive ground covered by these settings, they serve to reward those students who are inherently curious while highlighting the coherence in the curriculum as one progresses through the grades. The mathematical experiences …

Forms Of Knowledge Of Advanced Mathematics For Teaching, Julianna Connelly Stockton, Nicholas H. Wasserman Jan 2017

Forms Of Knowledge Of Advanced Mathematics For Teaching, Julianna Connelly Stockton, Nicholas H. Wasserman

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this paper, we explore in more detail why knowing advanced mathematics might be beneficial for teachers, specifically in relation to their classroom practice. Rather than by listing courses or specific advanced topics, as though those were the agents of change, we do so by considering advanced mathematical content for teachers in terms of more general forms of knowledge. In particular, we identify five forms of knowledge of advanced mathematics for teaching: peripheral, evolutionary, axiomatic, logical, and inferential. These categories were derived from analysis of an extensive mapping process linking K-12 content to relevant advanced mathematics. We connect these forms …

On Independence, Matching, And Homomorphism Complexes, Wesley K. Hough Jan 2017

On Independence, Matching, And Homomorphism Complexes, Wesley K. Hough

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

First introduced by Forman in 1998, discrete Morse theory has become a standard tool in topological combinatorics. The main idea of discrete Morse theory is to pair cells in a cellular complex in a manner that permits cancellation via elementary collapses, reducing the complex under consideration to a homotopy equivalent complex with fewer cells. In chapter 1, we introduce the relevant background for discrete Morse theory.

In chapter 2, we define a discrete Morse matching for a family of independence complexes that generalize the matching complexes of suitable "small" grid graphs. Using this matching, we determine the dimensions of the …

Efficacy Of Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution In The Setting Of Chronic Anemia, Andrew Vieira Jan 2017

Efficacy Of Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution In The Setting Of Chronic Anemia, Andrew Vieira

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

A theoretical model for calculating hematocrit as it relates to blood volume loss was used to test the theoretical impact of acute normovolemic hemodilution prior to surgery in a chronically anemic patient. The technique of hemodilution is intended to decrease red blood cell loss that occurs as the result of surgical intervention, however its impact may be decreased in an anemic patient. An equation to find change in hematocrit resulting from blood volume loss was elucidated via integration. This equation was then applied to a theoretical patient with 5 L of blood and a hematocrit of 32 percent which revealed …

Diagnosing Breast Cancer With A Neural Network, John Cullen Jan 2017

Diagnosing Breast Cancer With A Neural Network, John Cullen

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a minimally invasive biopsy technique that can be used to successfully diagnose types of cancer, including breast cancer. Immediately, it is difficult for a human to spot any trends in the cell level data gathered during a fine needle aspiration procedure. One way to predict the type of tumor a patient has, is to use a computer to develop a mathematical model based on known data. This project utilizes the Diagnostic Wisconsin Breast Cancer Database (DWBCDB) to create an accurate mathematical model that predicts the type of a patient’s tumor (Malignant or Benign). A neural …

Alternative Typing Learning Curves, Marcel Kreuzer Jan 2017

Alternative Typing Learning Curves, Marcel Kreuzer

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Typing is a part of everyday life for many people. However some people have difficulty in doing it. For example, for people who are blind and those who have carpal tunnel or cerebral palsy, a standard keyboard would not be effective to type. Alternative options include voice recognition and keyless keyboards. We focus on orbiTouch keyboard which has no keys, only two knobs which allow a person to type. Which alternative way of typing would be most effective given a person’s condition is discussed.

Danger Of Snow In The Sunshine State, Dmitrii Karpenko Jan 2017

Danger Of Snow In The Sunshine State, Dmitrii Karpenko

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The main purpose of the project is to investigate the maximum deflection of a rectangular 16 x 8 inches beam, supported on both ends under uniform loading stress under snow pressure in the event that Tampa experiences snowfall. The required information for the project is the material of the beam and its dimensions, measurement of the area of the roof that would accumulate snow, and calculations of the Moment of Inertia and Uniform Distributed Load for the beam. The maximum deflection of the beam can be calculated using the information above.

The outcome of the research shows that the roof …

Application Of Simple Harmonics Modeling A Shock, Kai Raymond Jan 2017

Application Of Simple Harmonics Modeling A Shock, Kai Raymond

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This project entails modeling a spring-shock absorber system in order to evaluate the position of a mass when this system is acted upon by outside forces. We will restrict our attention to the linear case where it is assumed that Hooke’s law gives the force exerted by the spring, and the resistance of the system will be proportional to the velocity of the mass. We analyze the time and frequency domain of the absorber system and compute its impulse response.

Approximating Surface Area Of Fluctuating Lipid Leaflets Using Weighted Grid Tessellation, Ahnaf Siddiqui Jan 2017

Approximating Surface Area Of Fluctuating Lipid Leaflets Using Weighted Grid Tessellation, Ahnaf Siddiqui

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The surface area per lipid is an important quantity useful in characterizing lipid bilayer structure and dynamics. However, simply dividing the flat surface area covered by the number of lipids does not give a sufficient characterization of surface dynamics in cases where parts of the lipid leaflets have curvaceous trajectories in three dimensions. An algorithm is proposed for modeling surface area per lipid using a three-dimensional tessellated grid. In this way both the vertical, as well as the more commonly considered the horizontal, fluctuations of lipids are used to accurately determine the area covered. This algorithm can reveal differences in …

Rudimentary Model Of Glucose Response To Stress, Nasha Rios-Guzman Jan 2017

Rudimentary Model Of Glucose Response To Stress, Nasha Rios-Guzman

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

A simplistic multifactorial model was crafted to represent change in plasma glucose concentrations after increases in stress hormones above baseline. A sample application of the predictive use of this model was demonstrated, and a reflection on possible models in diabetic populations was described. The potential for use of this model in conjunction with current models is discussed, as well as the issues pertinent to such a basic model.

Analysis Of Rainfall In Tampa, Amy Polen Jan 2017

Analysis Of Rainfall In Tampa, Amy Polen

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Rainfall for a region is very important to define, because it affects an ecosystem health, wildlife, and even human behavior. Using data obtained from National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the Tampa Bay International Airport and graphing it, the total rainfall for a year was estimated by both a rough trapezoidal Riemann’s sum approximation and a definite integral generated by polynomial regression. It was determined that both approximations gave an underestimate of the total rainfall that was measured, but the polynomial integral gave a reasonable estimate with a small percent error. It was seen through the graphical representation of …

Analyzation Of The Resistor-Inductor-Capacitor Circuit, Martin D. Elton Jan 2017

Analyzation Of The Resistor-Inductor-Capacitor Circuit, Martin D. Elton

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Starting with the basics of what a Resistor-Inductor-Capacitor circuit (RLC) is, i.e. its fundamental components, and ending with practical applications using advanced calculus to aid in predetermining the results and circuit design, this paper analyzes the RLC circuit via an advanced calculus based approach.
