The Value Of A Win: Analysis Of Playoff Structures, Matthew Orsi Apr 2017

The Value Of A Win: Analysis Of Playoff Structures, Matthew Orsi

Honors Projects in Mathematics

The purpose of this Senior Capstone project is to analyze the distinctions between existing playoff systems. In particular, we are looking to analyze the differences between the standard single-elimination tournament (which the NCAA has used since the inception of the tournament) and other potential options: double-elimination and multiple game series. Popular sports such as Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association all use multiple game series for their playoffs. This project will use probability theory and simulation to determine the likelihood of different seeds winning a championship as well as the expected number of victories by seed in each …

Mathematical Modeling Of Membrane Filtration, Pejman Sanaei Apr 2017

Mathematical Modeling Of Membrane Filtration, Pejman Sanaei

Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to formulate and investigate new mathematical models for membrane filtration. The work presented is divided into six chapters. In the first chapter the problem is introduced and motivated. In the second chapter, a new mathematical model for flow and fouling in a pleated membrane filter is presented. Pleated membrane filters are widely used in many applications, and offer significantly better surface area to volume ratios than equal area unpleated membrane filters. However, their filtration characteristics are markedly inferior to those of equivalent unpleated membrane filters in dead-end filtration. While several hypotheses have been advanced …

Stationary Acceleration Of Frenet Curves, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgin Sager, Yusuf Yayli Apr 2017

Stationary Acceleration Of Frenet Curves, Nemat Abazari, Martin Bohner, Ilgin Sager, Yusuf Yayli

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the stationary acceleration of the spherical general helix in a 3-dimensional Lie group is studied by using a bi-invariant metric. The relationship between the Frenet elements of the stationary acceleration curve in 4-dimensional Euclidean space and the intrinsic Frenet elements of the Lie group is outlined. As a consequence, the corresponding curvature and torsion of these curves are computed. In Minkowski space, for the curves on a timelike surface to have a stationary acceleration, a necessary and sufficient condition is refined.

Local Dependence Structure Of The Bivariate Normal Distribution, Boyan N. Dimitrov, Kreg Deachin Apr 2017

Local Dependence Structure Of The Bivariate Normal Distribution, Boyan N. Dimitrov, Kreg Deachin

Mathematics Presentations And Conference Materials

In several previous publications we developed an idea how probability tools can be used to measure strength of dependence between random events. In this talk we use it for measuring magnitude of local dependence inside the normally distributed random variables, using the regression coefficients in case of random events. Short illustrations (graphics and tables) are showing the use of these measures in already known popular Bivariate Normal distribution with different correlation values.

Itô'S Formula, The Stochastic Exponential, And Change Of Measure On General Time Scales, Wenqing Hu Apr 2017

Itô'S Formula, The Stochastic Exponential, And Change Of Measure On General Time Scales, Wenqing Hu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We provide an Itô formula for stochastic dynamical equation on general time scales. Based on this Itô's formula we give a closed-form expression for stochastic exponential on general time scales. We then demonstrate Girsanov's change of measure formula in the case of general time scales. Our result is being applied to a Brownian motion on the quantum time scale (𝑞-time scale).

Discrete Fractional Hermite-Hadamard Inequality, Aykut Arslan Apr 2017

Discrete Fractional Hermite-Hadamard Inequality, Aykut Arslan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis is comprised of three main parts: The Hermite-Hadamard inequality on discrete time scales, the fractional Hermite-Hadamard inequality, and Karush-Kuhn- Tucker conditions on higher dimensional discrete domains. In the first part of the thesis, Chapters 2 & 3, we define a convex function on a special time scale T where all the time points are not uniformly distributed on a time line. With the use of the substitution rules of integration we prove the Hermite-Hadamard inequality for convex functions defined on T. In the fourth chapter, we introduce fractional order Hermite-Hadamard inequality and characterize convexity in terms of this …

Stability Of Linear Difference Systems In Discrete And Fractional Calculus, Aynur Er

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The main purpose of this thesis is to define the stability of a system of linear difference equations of the form,

∇y(t) = Ay(t),

and to analyze the stability theory for such a system using the eigenvalues of the corresponding matrix A in nabla discrete calculus and nabla fractional discrete calculus. Discrete exponential functions and the Putzer algorithms are studied to examine the stability theorem.

This thesis consists of five chapters and is organized as follows. In the first chapter, the Gamma function and its properties are studied. Additionally, basic definitions, properties and some main theorem of discrete calculus are …

Loop Numbers Of Knots And Links, Van Anh Pham Apr 2017

Loop Numbers Of Knots And Links, Van Anh Pham

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis introduces a new quantity called loop number, and shows the conditions in which loop numbers become knot invariants. For a given knot diagram D, one can traverse the knot diagram and count the number of loops created by the traversal. The number of loops recorded depends on the starting point in the diagram D and on the traversal direction. Looking at the minimum or maximum number of loops over all starting points and directions, one can define two positive integers as loop numbers of the diagram D. In this thesis, the conditions under which these loop numbers become …

Infinitely Many Stability Switches In A Problem With Sublinear Oscillatory Boundary Conditions, Alfonso Castro, Rosa Pardo Apr 2017

Infinitely Many Stability Switches In A Problem With Sublinear Oscillatory Boundary Conditions, Alfonso Castro, Rosa Pardo

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We consider the elliptic equation −u+u = 0 with nonlinear boundary condition ∂u ∂n = λu + g(λ, x, u), where g(λ,x,s) s → 0, as |s|→∞ and g is oscillatory. We provide sufficient conditions on g for the existence of unbounded sequences of stable solutions, unstable solutions, and turning points, even in the absence of resonant solutions.

Existence Of Solutions To A Semilinear Elliptic Boundary Value Problem With Augmented Morse Index Bigger Than Two, Alfonso Castro, Ivan Ventura Apr 2017

Existence Of Solutions To A Semilinear Elliptic Boundary Value Problem With Augmented Morse Index Bigger Than Two, Alfonso Castro, Ivan Ventura

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Building on the construction of least energy sign-changing solutions to variational semilinear elliptic boundary value problems introduced in [A. Castro, J. Cossio and J.M. Neuberger, Sign changing solutions for a superlinear Dirichlet problem, Rocky Mountain J. Math. 27 (1997), 1041--1053], we prove the existence of a solution with augmented Morse index at least three when a sublevel of the corresponding action functional has nontrivial topology. We provide examples where the set of least energy sign changing solutions is disconnected, hence has nontrivial topology.

Conditions For Obtaining Nontrivial Knots From Collections Of Vectors, Joseph Borgatti Apr 2017

Conditions For Obtaining Nontrivial Knots From Collections Of Vectors, Joseph Borgatti

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

We explore under what conditions one can obtain a nontrivial knot, given a collection of n vectors. First, we show how to get a crossing from any 3 vectors equal in magnitude, by arbitrarily picking 2 vectors and identifying the sufficient and necessary criteria for picking a third vector that will guarantee a crossing when the vectors are reordered. We also show that it’s always possible for a set of vectors to be reordered to form the unknot, if they sum to ~0 when added together. Our main results are restricted to sets of n vectors that, when reordered appropriately, …

A Radial Basis Function Method For Computing Helmholtz-Hodge Decompositions, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady B. Wright Apr 2017

A Radial Basis Function Method For Computing Helmholtz-Hodge Decompositions, Edward J. Fuselier, Grady B. Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A radial basis function (RBF) method based on matrix-valued kernels is presented and analyzed for computing two types of vector decompositions on bounded domains: one where the normal component of the divergence-free part of the field is specified on the boundary, and one where the tangential component of the curl-free part of the field specified. These two decompositions can then be combined to obtain a full Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition of the field, i.e. the sum of divergence-free, curl-free, and harmonic fields. All decompositions are computed from samples of the field at (possibly scattered) nodes over the domain, and all boundary conditions …

Bruins, Peter Calow, Virginie Ducrot, Nika Galic, Kristina Garber, Bret C. Harvey, Henriette Jager, Andrew Kanarek, Robert Pastorok, Steve F. Railsback, Richard Rebarber, Pernille Thorbek

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Protection of ecosystem services is increasingly emphasized as a risk-assessment goal, but there are wide gaps between current ecological risk-assessment endpoints and potential effects on services provided by ecosystems. The authors present a framework that links common ecotoxicological endpoints to chemical impacts on populations and communities and the ecosystem services that they provide. This framework builds on considerable advances in mechanistic effects models designed to span multiple levels of biological organization and account for various types of biological interactions and feedbacks. For illustration, the authors introduce 2 case studies that employ well-developed and validated mechanistic effects models: the inSTREAM individual-based …

Regime Switching In Cointegrated Time Series, Bradley David Zynda Ii Apr 2017

Regime Switching In Cointegrated Time Series, Bradley David Zynda Ii

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Volatile commodities and markets can often be difficult to model and forecast given significant breaks in trends through time. To account such breaks, regime switching methods allow for models to accommodate abrupt changes in behavior of the data. However, the difficulty often arises in beginning the process of choosing a model and its associated parameters with which to represent the data and the objects of interest. To improve model selection for these volatile markets, this research examines time series with regime switching components and argues that a synthesis of vector error correction models with regime switching models with ameliorate financial …

It Is Better To Be Upside Than Sharpe!, Daniele Dapuzzo Apr 2017

It Is Better To Be Upside Than Sharpe!, Daniele Dapuzzo

Theses and Dissertations

Based on the assumption that returns in Commercial Real Estate are normally distributed, the Sharpe Ratio has been the standard risk-adjusted performance measure for the past several years. Research has questioned whether this assumption can be reasonably made. The Upside Potential Ratio as a risk-adjusted performance measure is an alternative to measure performance on a risk-adjusted basis but its values differ from the Sharpe Ratio's only in the assumption of skewed returns. We will provide reasonable evidence that CRE returns should not be fitted with a normal distribution and present the Gaussian Mixture Model as our choice of distribution to …

Connections Between Project-Based Learning And Mathematics Instruction: Exploring Their Integration In Classroom Curricula, Zoe Nietert Apr 2017

Connections Between Project-Based Learning And Mathematics Instruction: Exploring Their Integration In Classroom Curricula, Zoe Nietert

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Project-based learning is poorly defined leading to confusion and inconsistent implementation in the classroom. To eliminate the use of project-based learning as educational jargon it is imperative to define the term. This project aims to define project-based learning in a manner that outlines its critical and variable attributes. From the established definition, a rubric is created to determine the quality of project-based learning materials, specifically in the context of math education. The purpose of the rubric is to create a tool to be used in future classrooms as a means of identifying classroom curricula that demonstrate both project-based learning and …

Asymptotics For Primitive Roots Producing Polynomials And Primitive Points On Elliptic Curves, Nelson Carella Apr 2017

Asymptotics For Primitive Roots Producing Polynomials And Primitive Points On Elliptic Curves, Nelson Carella

Publications and Research

Let $x \geq 1$ be a large number, let $f(n) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a prime producing polynomial of degree $\deg(f)=m$, and let \(u\neq \pm 1,v^2\) be a fixed integer. Assuming the Bateman-Horn conjecture, an asymptotic counting function for the number of primes $p=f(n) \leq x$ with a fixed primitive root $u$ is derived in this note. This asymptotic result has the form $$\pi_f(x)=\# \{ p=f(n)\leq x:\ord_p(u)=p-1 \}=\left (c(u,f)+ O\left (1/\log x )\right ) \right )x^{1/m}/\log x$$, where $c(u,f)$ is a constant depending on the polynomial and the fixed integer. Furthermore, new results for the asymptotic order of elliptic primes with …

Extending Uniqueness Implies Existence Results To Fractional Differential Equations, Tyler Masthay Apr 2017

Extending Uniqueness Implies Existence Results To Fractional Differential Equations, Tyler Masthay

Honors Theses

In 1967, Andrzej Lasota and Zdzisław Opial proved that under sufficient conditions, uniqueness of solutions for boundary value problems for a second-order ordinary differential equation implies their existence. Lloyd Jackson and Keith Schrader then proved an extension of this result for boundary value problems of third order. In proving the third-order case, this compactness theorem is applied as a key part of the proof. It states that under sufficient conditions, uniform boundedness of a sequence of solutions on a compact domain implies existence of a subsequence which converges uniformly with respect to its zeroth, first, and second derivatives. We present …

Kadison's Pythagorean Theorem And Essential Codimension, Jireh Loreaux, Victor Kaftal Apr 2017

Kadison's Pythagorean Theorem And Essential Codimension, Jireh Loreaux, Victor Kaftal

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Kadison’s Pythagorean theorem (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, 99(7):4178–4184, 2002; Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 99(8):5217–5222, 2002) provides a characterization of the diagonals of projections with a subtle integrality condition. Arveson (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 104(4):1152–1158, 2007), Kaftal, Ng, Zhang (J Funct Anal 257(8):2497–2529, 2009), and Argerami (Integral Equ Oper Theory 82(1):33–49, 2015) all provide different proofs of that integrality condition. In this paper we interpret the integrality condition in terms of the essential codimension of a pair of projections introduced by Brown et al. (Proceedings of a conference on operator theory, Lecture notes …

Cross Ratio, Peyton Burlingame Apr 2017

Cross Ratio, Peyton Burlingame

Paper and Posters Presentations

A question posed in the MAA Monthly is the following: “Given four points A, B, C, and D in order on a line in Euclidean space, under what conditions will there be a point P off the line such that the angles ???APB, ?BPC, and ?CPD have equal measure.” We will present a partial solution of this question using the cross ratio. The cross ratio plays a central role in projective geometry however can be proved using the Law of Sines. The elements of the proofs are comprised of calculus, algebra, and geometry.

Deriving A Provisional Tolerable Intake For Intravenous Exposure To Silver Nanoparticles Released From Medical Devices, Laura C. Savery, Rene Vinas, Amber M. Nagy, Prachi Pradeep, Stephen Merrill, Subhas G. Malghan, Peter L. Goering, Ronald P. Brown

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are incorporated into medical devices for their anti-microbial characteristics. The potential exposure and toxicity of AgNPs is unknown due to varying physicochemical particle properties and lack of toxicological data. The aim of this safety assessment is to derive a provisional tolerable intake (pTI) value for AgNPs released from blood-contacting medical devices. A literature review of in vivo studies investigating critical health effects induced from intravenous (i. v.) exposure to AgNPs was evaluated by the Annapolis Accords principles and Toxicological Data Reliability Assessment Tool (ToxRTool). The point of departure (POD) was based on an i. v. 28-day …
