Observations On Convexity, Chad A. Huckaby May 2017

Observations On Convexity, Chad A. Huckaby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will explore convexity as it pertains to sets of complex-valued functions. These include preliminary looks at established linear and polynomially convex hulls, along with the development of new types of convex hulls. These types will include, but are not limited to the hulls determined by inversions, shift inversions, and Mobius transformations. A convex hull must be preceded by the set of functions involved. These hulls are the smallest convex sets that contain the original set. Justifications and precise definitions are included within the body of the work.

Languages, Geodesics, And Hnn Extensions, Maranda Franke May 2017

Languages, Geodesics, And Hnn Extensions, Maranda Franke

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The complexity of a geodesic language has connections to algebraic properties of the group. Gilman, Hermiller, Holt, and Rees show that a finitely generated group is virtually free if and only if its geodesic language is locally excluding for some finite inverse-closed generating set. The existence of such a correspondence and the result of Hermiller, Holt, and Rees that finitely generated abelian groups have piecewise excluding geodesic language for all finite inverse-closed generating sets motivated our work. We show that a finitely generated group with piecewise excluding geodesic language need not be abelian and give a class of infinite non-abelian …

Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods For Pdes In Polar And Cylindrical Geometries, Megan Richardson May 2017

Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods For Pdes In Polar And Cylindrical Geometries, Megan Richardson

Dissertations

As a result of stiff systems of ODEs, difficulties arise when using time stepping methods for PDEs. Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) methods get around the difficulties caused by stiffness by computing each component of the solution independently. In this dissertation, we extend the KSS method to a circular domain using polar coordinates. In addition to using these coordinates, we will approximate the solution using Legendre polynomials instead of Fourier basis functions. We will also compare KSS methods on a time-independent PDE to other iterative methods. Then we will shift our focus to three families of orthogonal polynomials on the interval …

A New Approach To Ramanujan's Partition Congruences, Mayra C. Huerta May 2017

A New Approach To Ramanujan's Partition Congruences, Mayra C. Huerta

Theses and Dissertations

MacMahon provided Ramanujan and Hardy a table of values for p(n) with the partitions of the first 200 integers. In order to make the table readable, MacMahon grouped the entries in blocks of five. Ramanujan noticed that the last entry in each block was a multiple of 5. This motivated Ramanujan to make the following conjectures, p(5n+4) ≡ 0 (mod 5); p(7 n+5) ≡ 0 (mod 7); p(11n+6) ≡ 0 (mod 11) which he eventually proved.

The purpose of this thesis is to give new proofs for Ramanujan's partition …

Investigating The Mathematical Dispositions And Self-Efficacy For Teaching Mathematics Of Preservice Teachers, Jasmine M. Cruz May 2017

Investigating The Mathematical Dispositions And Self-Efficacy For Teaching Mathematics Of Preservice Teachers, Jasmine M. Cruz

Theses and Dissertations

The study of the individual's beliefs and the role and influence they have on the individual's actions and behaviors, have long been examined and investigated by educators and psychologists. Moreover, researchers have overwhelmingly claimed and demonstrated that the beliefs held by teachers significantly influences their behavior and educational practices in the classroom. This thesis study investigates the mathematical disposition and self-efficacy for teaching mathematics of preservice teachers. The study's primary goals are to discover if there is a relationship or association between a teacher's mathematical disposition(MD) and his/her self-efficacy for teaching mathematics (SEFTM), and if there are significant differences between …

Problem Book On Higher Algebra And Number Theory, Ryanto Putra May 2017

Problem Book On Higher Algebra And Number Theory, Ryanto Putra

Theses and Dissertations

This book is an attempt to provide relevant end-of-section exercises, together with their step-by-step solutions, to Dr. Zieschang's classic class notes Higher Algebra and Number Theory. It's written under the notion that active hands-on working on exercises is an important part of learning, whereby students would see the nuance and intricacies of a math concepts which they may miss from passive reading. The problems are selected here to provide background on the text, examples that illuminate the underlying theorems, as well as to fill in the gaps in the notes.

Mathematical Modeling Of Mers-Cov Nosocomial Epidemic, Adriana Quiroz May 2017

Mathematical Modeling Of Mers-Cov Nosocomial Epidemic, Adriana Quiroz

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis concerns about the analysis and modeling of spread of an infectious disease inside a hospital. We begin from the basic knowledge of the simple models: SIR and SEIR, to show an appropriate understanding of the epidemic dynamic process. We consider the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus (MERS-CoV), in Saudi Arabia, to introduce MERS-CoV SEIR ward model by developing different systems of equations in each ward (unit). We use the Next Generation Matrix method to calculate the basic reproduction number R0. Simulations of different scenarios are done using different combination of parameters.

To model MERS-CoV we established …

Disease Modeling Using Fractional Differential Equations And Estimation, Daniel P. Medina May 2017

Disease Modeling Using Fractional Differential Equations And Estimation, Daniel P. Medina

Theses and Dissertations

Ordinary differential equations has been the most conventional approach when modeling spread of infectious diseases. Effective research has shown that using fractional-order differentiation can be a very useful and efficient extension for some mathematical models. In this thesis, fractional calculus is used to depict an SEIR model with a system of fractional-order differential equations. I also simulate the fractional-order SEIR using integer-order numerical methods. I also establish the estimation framework and show that it is accurately working.

Coupled Telegraph And Sir Model Of Information And Diseases, Jose De Jesus Galarza May 2017

Coupled Telegraph And Sir Model Of Information And Diseases, Jose De Jesus Galarza

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, the effect of information propagation on disease spread and vaccination uptake through networks is studied. In this model the information reaches different people at different distances from the center of information containing the health data. We use a pair of Telegraph equations to depict the vaccine and disease information propagation on a network embedded into a straight line. The Telegraph equation is coupled with an SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) model to examine the anticipated mutual influence. Numerical simulations and stability analysis were made to study the model. We show how the propagation of information about the disease impacts the …

On The Existence Of Non-Free Totally Reflexive Modules, J. Cameron Atkins May 2017

On The Existence Of Non-Free Totally Reflexive Modules, J. Cameron Atkins

Theses and Dissertations

For a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring R, if the quotient R/(x) admits nonfree totally reflexive modules, where x is a system of parameters consisting of elements of degree one, then so does the ring R. A non-constructive proof of this statement was given in [16]. We give an explicit construction of the totally reflexive modules over R obtained from those over R/(x).

We consider the question of which Stanley-Reisner rings of graphs admit nonfree totally reflexive modules and discuss some examples. For an Artinian local ring (R,m) with m3 = 0 and containing the complex numbers, we describe an explicit …

A Family Of Simple Codimension Two Singularities With Infinite Cohen-Macaulay Representation Type, Tyler Lewis May 2017

A Family Of Simple Codimension Two Singularities With Infinite Cohen-Macaulay Representation Type, Tyler Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

A celebrated theorem of Buchweitz, Greuel, Knörrer, and Schreyer is that the hypersurface singularities of finite representation type, i.e. the hypersurface singularities admitting only finitely many indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, are exactly the ADE singularities. The codimension 2 singularities that are the analogs of the ADE singularities have been classified by Frühbis-Krühger and Neumer, and it is natural to expect an analogous result holds for these singularities. In this paper, I will present a proof that, in contrast to hypersurfaces, Frühbis-Krühger and Neumer’s singularities include a subset of singularities of infinite representation type.

Chaos To Permanence - Through Control Theory, Sherli Koshy Chenthittayil May 2017

Chaos To Permanence - Through Control Theory, Sherli Koshy Chenthittayil

All Dissertations

Work by Cushing et al. [18] and Kot et al. [60] demonstrate that chaotic behavior does occur in biological systems. We demonstrate that chaotic behavior can enable the survival/thriving of the species involved in a system. We adopt the concepts of persistence/permanence as measures of survival/thriving of the species [35]. We utilize present chaotic behavior and a control algorithm based on [66, 72] to push a non-permanent system into permanence. The algorithm uses the chaotic orbits present in the system to obtain the desired state. We apply the algorithm to a Lotka-Volterra type two-prey, one-predator model from [30], a ratio-dependent …

Combinatorial Games On Graphs, Trevor K. Williams May 2017

Combinatorial Games On Graphs, Trevor K. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Combinatorial Games are intriguing and have a tendency to engross students and lead them into a serious study of mathematics. The engaging nature of games is the basis for this thesis. Two combinatorial games and some educational tools are presented which were developed by the author in the pursuit of the solution of these games.

A Stochastic Model For Water-Vegetation Systems And The Effect Of Decreasing Precipitation On Semi-Arid Environments, Shannon A. Dixon May 2017

A Stochastic Model For Water-Vegetation Systems And The Effect Of Decreasing Precipitation On Semi-Arid Environments, Shannon A. Dixon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Current climate change trends are affecting the magnitude and recurrence of extreme weather events. In particular, several semi-arid regions around the planet are confronting more intense and prolonged lack of precipitation, slowly transforming these regions into deserts. Many mathematical models have been developed for purposes of analyzing vegetation-water interactions, particularly in semi-arid landscapes. Most models are based on the average behavior of the system as a whole, and how it is influenced by external changes. These models may be termed "macro-scale" models. Other models have concerned themselves with the interactions between individuals, in this case the interactions between individual plants …

Irrational Eigenvalues Of The Discrete Laplacian: A Study Of Simplical Complexes, Brian Bollen May 2017

Irrational Eigenvalues Of The Discrete Laplacian: A Study Of Simplical Complexes, Brian Bollen

Psychology

We study the behavior of eigenvalues of the discrete Laplacian of an abstract simplicial complex K when subdividing a single face of K . We show that if K is a simplex, performing this kind of restricted subdivision twice on a single face produces irrational eigenvalues for the discrete Laplacian.

Investigation Of Determinacy For Games Of Variable Length, Emi Ikeda May 2017

Investigation Of Determinacy For Games Of Variable Length, Emi Ikeda

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many well-known determinacy results calibrate determinacy strength in terms of large cardinals (e.g., a measurable cardinal) or a "large cardinal type" property (e.g., zero sharp exists). Some of the other results are of the form that subsets of reals of a certain complexity will satisfy a well-known property when a certain amount of determinacy holds. The standard game tree considered in the study of determinacy involves games in which all moves are from omega and all plays have length omega (i.e. the game tree is omega^

Novel Methods For The Time-Dependent Maxwell’S Equations And Their Applications, Sidney Shields May 2017

Novel Methods For The Time-Dependent Maxwell’S Equations And Their Applications, Sidney Shields

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation investigates three different mathematical models based on the time domain Maxwell's equations using three different numerical methods: a Yee scheme using a non-uniform grid, a nodal discontinuous Galerkin (nDG) method, and a newly developed discontinuous Galerkin method named the weak Galerkin (WG) method. The non-uniform Yee scheme is first applied to an electromagnetic metamaterial model. Stability and superconvergence error results are proved for the method, which are then confirmed through numerical results. Additionally, a numerical simulation of backwards wave propagation through a negative-index metamaterial is given using the presented method. Next, the nDG method is used to simulate …

Statistical Analysis Of Markovian Queueing Models Of Limit Order Books, Yiyao Luo May 2017

Statistical Analysis Of Markovian Queueing Models Of Limit Order Books, Yiyao Luo

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the suitability of some Markovian queueing models in being able to effectively describe the dynamical properties of a limit order book more specifically. We review and compare the assumptions proposed by Huang et al.[Quantitative Finance,12,547-557(2012)] and Cont et al.[SIAM Journal for Financial Mathematics,4,1- 25(2013)], and estimate the intensity parameters in both ways, based on real data of a stock on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Trough comparing by cumulative distribution functions of first-passage time to state 0, we will hsow that the estimators of Cont’s model fit our data better and we put …

The financial stock market turned out to rise and fall suddenly and sharply in recent years, which means that volatility and uncertainty is very significant in market and measuring the market risk accurately is of great importance. I collect the historical close price of S&P 500 Financials Sector Index from January 19th 2011 to January 31st 2017, and use the daily logarithm yield as time series data to build 2 ARMA models and 5 GARCH family models using t-distribution. Then I calculate future 10 days’ relative VAR in 1-day horizon under 99\% confidence level based on the selected model. E-GARCH …

Detecting Finite Flat Dimension Of Modules Via Iterates Of The Frobenius Endomorphism, Douglas J. Dailey, Srikanth B. Iyengar, Thomas Marley May 2017

Detecting Finite Flat Dimension Of Modules Via Iterates Of The Frobenius Endomorphism, Douglas J. Dailey, Srikanth B. Iyengar, Thomas Marley

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

It is proved that a module M over a Noetherian ring R of positive characteristic p has finite flat dimension if there exists an integer t > 0 such that Tor R (M, fe R) = 0 for t < i< t + dim R and infinitely many e. This extends results of Herzog, who proved it when M is finitely generated. It is also proved that when R is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, it suffices that the Tor vanishing holds for one e > logp e(R) is the multiplicity of R.

Support Vector Machine And Its Application To Regression And Classification, Xiaotong Hu May 2017

Support Vector Machine And Its Application To Regression And Classification, Xiaotong Hu

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Support Vector machine is currently a hot topic in the statistical learning area and is now widely used in data classification and regression modeling. In this thesis, we introduce the basic idea for support vector machine, its application in the classification area including both linear and nonlinear parts, and the idea of support vector regression contains the comparison of loss functions and the usage of kernel function. Two real life examples, which are taken from R package, are also provided for both classification and regression part respectively, talking about classification of glass type and prediction for Ozone pollution.

On Rings Of Invariants For Cyclic P-Groups, Daniel Juda May 2017

On Rings Of Invariants For Cyclic P-Groups, Daniel Juda

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the ring of invariants R^G of a cyclic p-group G acting on k[x_1,\ldots, x_n] where k is a field of characteristic p >0. We consider when R^G is Cohen-Macaulay and give an explicit computation of the depth of R^G. Using representation theory and a result of Nakajima, we demonstrate that R^G is a unique factorization domain and consequently quasi-Gorenstein. We answer the question of when R^G is F-rational and when R^G is F-regular.

We also study the a-invariant for a graded ring S, that is, the maximal graded degree of the top local cohomology module of S. …

Statistical Models To Predict Popularity Of News Articles On Social Networks, Ziyi Liu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Social networks have changed the way that we obtain information. Content creators and, specifically news article authors, have in interest in predicting the popularity of content, in terms of the number of shares, likes, and comments across various social media platforms. In this thesis, I employ several statistical learning methods for prediction. Both regression-based and classification-based methods are compared according to their predictive ability, using a database from the UCI Machine Learning Repository.

On Post-Selection Confidence Intervals In Linear Regression, Xinwei Zhang May 2017

On Post-Selection Confidence Intervals In Linear Regression, Xinwei Zhang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The general goal of this thesis is to investigate and examine some issues about post-selection inference which arises from the setting where statistical inference is carried out after a datadriven model selection step. In this setting, the classical inference theory which requires a fixed priori model becomes invalid since the selected model is a result of random event. Hence, a common practice in applied research which ignores the model selection and builds up confidence interval will result in misleading or even false conclusion. In this thesis, specifically, we first discusses some examples to show how the classical inference theory loses …

Statistical Analysis Of The Price Jumps Of Financial Assets Based On Lob Data, Ying Zhuang May 2017

Statistical Analysis Of The Price Jumps Of Financial Assets Based On Lob Data, Ying Zhuang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The price process in electronic markets is one prototypical example of a stochastic process, and it has historically be fitted and analyzed using different stochastic models such as Levy processes, diffusions, and SDEs (stochastic differential equations). In this thesis, we analyze Microsoft stock data in 2014-11-03 with the goal of studying the presence of jumps based on Limit Order Book (LOB) data. To this end, we divide the whole day’s data into many consecutive intervals and proceed to apply a jump detection method to identify the intervals that could potentially have jumps. After obtaining the intervals with potential jumps, we …

Mcdm Method For N-Wise Criteria Comparisons And Inconsistent Problems, Florentin Smarandache, Azeddine Elhassouny

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The purpose of this paper is to present an e[xtension and alternative of the hybrid method based on Saaty’s Analytical Hierarchy Process and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution method (AHP-TOPSIS), that based on the AHP and its use of pairwise comparisons, to a new method called α -D MCDM-TOPSIS( α -Discounting Method for multicriteria decision making-TOPSIS). The new method overcomes limits of AHP which work only for pairwise comparisons of criteria to any-wise (n-wise) comparisons, with crisp coefficients or with interval-valued coefficients. α-D MCDM-TOPSIS is verified by some examples to demonstrate how it allows for consistency, …

Shortest Path Problem On Single Valued Neutrosophic Graphs, Florentin Smarandache, Said Broumi, Mohamed Talea, Assia Bakali, Kishore Kumar May 2017

Shortest Path Problem On Single Valued Neutrosophic Graphs, Florentin Smarandache, Said Broumi, Mohamed Talea, Assia Bakali, Kishore Kumar

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

A single valued neutrosophic graph is a generalized structure of fuzzy graph, intuitionistic fuzzy graph that gives more precision, flexibility and compatibility to a system when compared with systems that are designed using fuzzy graphs and intuitionistic fuzzy graphs. This paper addresses for the first time, the shortest path in an acyclic neutrosophic directed graph using ranking function. Here each edge length is assigned to single valued neutrosophic numbers instead of a real number. The neutrosophic number is able to represent the indeterminacy in the edge (arc) costs of neutrosophic graph. A proposed algorithm gives the shortest path and shortest …

A Comparison Of Multiple Testing Adjustment Methods With Block-Correlation Positively-Dependent Tests, John R. Stevens, Abdullah Al Masud, Anvar Suyundikov Apr 2017

A Comparison Of Multiple Testing Adjustment Methods With Block-Correlation Positively-Dependent Tests, John R. Stevens, Abdullah Al Masud, Anvar Suyundikov

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In high dimensional data analysis (such as gene expression, spatial epidemiology, or brain imaging studies), we often test thousands or more hypotheses simultaneously. As the number of tests increases, the chance of observing some statistically significant tests is very high even when all null hypotheses are true. Consequently, we could reach incorrect conclusions regarding the hypotheses. Researchers frequently use multiplicity adjustment methods to control type I error rates—primarily the family-wise error rate (FWER) or the false discovery rate (FDR)—while still desiring high statistical power. In practice, such studies may have dependent test statistics (or p-values) as tests can be dependent …
