Researchers in information science and related areas have developed various methods for analyzing textual data, such as survey responses. This article describes the application of analysis methods from two distinct fields, one method from interpretive social science and one method from statistical machine learning, to the same survey data. The results show that the two analyses produce some similar and some complementary insights about the phenomenon of interest, in this case, nonuse of social media. We compare both the processes of conducting these analyses and the results they produce to derive insights about each method's unique advantages and drawbacks, as …
Bifurcation From Infinity For Reaction–Diffusion Equations Under Nonlinear Boundary Conditions, Nsoki Mavinga, R. Pardo
Bifurcation From Infinity For Reaction–Diffusion Equations Under Nonlinear Boundary Conditions, Nsoki Mavinga, R. Pardo
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
We consider reaction–diffusion equations under nonlinear boundary conditions where the nonlinearities are asymptotically linear at infinity and depend on a parameter. We prove that, as the parameter crosses some critical values, a resonance-type phenomenon provides solutions that bifurcate from infinity. We characterize the bifurcated branches when they are sub- or supercritical. We obtain both Landesman–Lazer-type conditions that guarantee the existence of solutions in the resonant case and an anti-maximum principle.

Given a finite-dimensional noncommutative semisimple algebra A over C with involution, we show that A always has a basis B for which ( A , B ) is a reality-based algebra. For algebras that have a one-dimensional representation δ , we show that there always exists an RBA-basis for which δ is a positive degree map. We characterize all RBA-bases of the 5-dimensional noncommutative semisimple algebra for which the algebra has a positive degree map, and give examples of RBA-bases of C ⊕ M n ( C ) for which the RBA has a positive degree map, for all n …
Spaces Of Dirichlet Series With The Complete Pick Property, John E. Mccarthy, Orr Moshe Shalit
Spaces Of Dirichlet Series With The Complete Pick Property, John E. Mccarthy, Orr Moshe Shalit
Mathematics Faculty Research
We consider reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet series with kernels of the form k(s,u)=∑ann−s−u¯, and characterize when such a space is a complete Pick space. We then discuss what it means for two reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces to be “the same”, and introduce a notion of weak isomorphism. Many of the spaces we consider turn out to be weakly isomorphic as reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces to the Drury–Arveson space Hd2 in d variables, where d can be any number in {1, 2,...,∞}, and in particular their multiplier algebras are unitarily equivalent to the multiplier algebra of Hd2. Thus, a …

Thermal Stress Analysis In A Functionally Graded Hollow Elliptic-Cylinder Subjected To Uniform Temperature Distribution, V. R. Manthena, N. K. Lamba, G. D. Kedar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, an analytical method of a thermoelastic problem for a medium with functionally graded material properties is developed in a theoretical manner for the elliptic-cylindrical coordinate system under the assumption that the material properties except for Poisson’s ratio and density are assumed to vary arbitrarily with the exponential law in the radial direction. An attempt has been made to reconsider the fundamental system of equations for functionally graded solids in a two-dimensional state under thermal and mechanical loads. The general solution of displacement formulation is obtained by the introduction of appropriate transformation and carried out the analysis by …

On Strong Domination Number Of Graphs, S. K. Vaidya, S. H. Karkar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A subset S of a vertex set V is called a dominating set of graph G if every vertex of V -S is dominated by some element of set S. If e is an edge with end vertices u and v and degree of u is greater than or equal to degree of v then we say u strongly dominates v. If every vertex of V - S is strongly dominated by some vertex of S then S is called strong dominating set. The minimum cardinality of a strong dominating set is called the strong domination number of graph. We …

On (Semi)Topological Bcc-Algebras, F. R. Setudeh, N. Kouhestani
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we introduce the notion of (semi)topological BCC-algebras and derive here conditions that imply a BCC-algebra to be a (semi)topological BCC-algebra. We prove that for each cardinal number α there is at least a (semi)topological BCC-algebra of order α: Also we study separation axioms on (semi)topological BCC-algebras and show that for any infinite cardinal number α there is a Hausdorff (semi)topological BCC-algebra of order α with nontrivial topology.

Some Relations On Generalized Rice's Matrix Polynomials, Ayman Shehata
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The main aim of this paper is to obtain certain properties of generalized Rice’s matrix polynomials such as their matrix differential equation, generating matrix functions, an expansion for them. We have also deduced the various families of bilinear and bilateral generating matrix functions for them with the help of the generating matrix functions developed in the paper and some of their applications have also been presented here.
Numerical Solution Of Fractional Elliptic Pde's By The Collocation Method, Fuat Usta
Numerical Solution Of Fractional Elliptic Pde's By The Collocation Method, Fuat Usta
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this presentation a numerical solution for the solution of fractional order of elliptic partial differential equation in R2 is proposed. In this method we use the Radial basis functions (RBFs) method to benefit the desired properties of mesh free techniques such as no need to generate any mesh and easily applied to multi dimensions. In the numerical solution approach the RBF collocation method is used to discrete fractional derivative terms with the Gaussian basis function. Two dimensional numerical examples are presented and discussed, which conform well with the corresponding exact solutions.
A Novel Approach For Solving Volterra Integral Equations Involving Local Fractional Operator, Hassan K. Jassim
A Novel Approach For Solving Volterra Integral Equations Involving Local Fractional Operator, Hassan K. Jassim
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The paper presents an approximation method called local fractional variational iteration method (LFVIM) for solving the linear and nonlinear Volterra integral equations of the second kind with local fractional derivative operators. Some illustrative examples are discussed to demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed method. Furthermore, this method does not require spatial discretization or restrictive assumptions and therefore reduces the numerical computation significantly. The results reveal that the local fractional variational iteration method is very effective and convenient to solve linear and nonlinear integral equations within local fractional derivative operators.
Stability Of Planar Detonations In The Reactive Navier-Stokes Equations, Joshua W. Lytle
Stability Of Planar Detonations In The Reactive Navier-Stokes Equations, Joshua W. Lytle
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the study of spectral stability in traveling waves, with a special interest in planar detonations in the multidimensional reactive Navier-Stokes equations. The chief tool is the Evans function, combined with STABLAB, a numerical library devoted to calculating the Evans function. Properly constructed, the Evans function is an analytic function in the right half-plane whose zeros correspond in multiplicity and location to the spectrum of the traveling wave. Thus the Evans function can be used to verify stability, or to locate precisely any unstable eigenvalues. We introduce a new method that uses numerical continuation to follow unstable …

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, whose criteria are risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of NAFLD, its association with subclinical atherosclerosis, and factors that may account for this association in Mexican Americans. In a population based cross-sectional sample drawn from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort in Texas, carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), an indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis, was measured. Abnormal carotid ultrasound study was defined as mean cIMT >75th percentile for age and gender and/or plaque presence. NAFLD was defined as steatosis by ultrasound in …
How Low Can You Go? New Bounds On The Biplanar Crossing Number Of Low-Dimensional Hypercubes, Gregory J. Clark, Gwen Spencer
How Low Can You Go? New Bounds On The Biplanar Crossing Number Of Low-Dimensional Hypercubes, Gregory J. Clark, Gwen Spencer
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this note we provide an improved upper bound on the biplanar crossing number of the 8-dimensional hypercube. The k-planar crossing number of a graph cr k ( G) is the number of crossings required when every edge of G must be drawn in one of k distinct planes. It was shown in [2] that cr 2 ( Q 8 ) ≤ 256 which we improve to cr 2 ( Q 8 ) ≤ 128. Our approach highlights the relationship between symmetric drawings and the study of k-planar crossing numbers. We conclude with several open questions concerning this …

Subgradients Of Minimal Time Functions Without Calmness, Nguyen Mau Nam, Dang Van Cuong
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In recent years there has been great interest in variational analysis of a class of nonsmooth functions called the minimal time function. In this paper we continue this line of research by providing new results on generalized differentiation of this class of functions, relaxing assumptions imposed on the functions and sets involved for the results. In particular, we focus on the singular subdifferential and the limiting subdifferential of this class of functions.

High school students can struggle with word problems in upper level math classes. Causes for this struggle could include lower reading comprehension, limited mathematic vocabulary, and difficulty changing words to algebraic expressions. This article proposes three techniques to help teachers instruct these struggling students that include (a) organization by difficulty of comprehension and computation (b) scaffolding and (c) utilizing the Explain, Practice and Assess (EPA) strategy.
Diophantine Approximation And The Atypical Numbers Of Nathanson And O'Bryant, David Seff
Diophantine Approximation And The Atypical Numbers Of Nathanson And O'Bryant, David Seff
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
For any positive real number $\theta > 1$, and any natural number $n$, it is obvious that sequence $\theta^{1/n}$ goes to 1. Nathanson and O'Bryant studied the details of this convergence and discovered some truly amazing properties. One critical discovery is that for almost all $n$, $\displaystyle\floor{\frac{1}{\fp{\theta^{1/n}}}}$ is equal to $\displaystyle\floor{\frac{n}{\log\theta}-\frac{1}{2}}$, the exceptions, when $n > \log_2 \theta$, being termed atypical $n$ (the set of which for fixed $\theta$ being named $\mcA_\theta$), and that for $\log\theta$ rational, the number of atypical $n$ is finite. Nathanson left a number of questions open, and, subsequently, O'Bryant developed a theory to answer most of these …

This paper describes the importance of Neutrosophy Theory in order to find a method that could solve the uncertainties arising on discursive analysis. The aim of this pilot study is to find a procedure to diminish the uncertainties from public discourse induced, especially, by humans (politicians, journalists, etc.). We consider that Neutrosophy Theory is a sentiment analysis specific case regarding processing of the three states: positive, negative, and neutral. The study is intended to identify a method to answer to uncertainties solving in order to support politician's staff, NLP specialists, artificial intelligence researchers and generally the electors.

Mathematical Competencies Of Third Level Students: A Review, Colm Mcguinness
Mathematical Competencies Of Third Level Students: A Review, Colm Mcguinness
The ITB Journal
Many lecturers of mathematics and related disciplines in Ireland and internationally believe there has been a gradual decline in mathematical competencies of students presenting for first year at third level educational establishments. Some of the evidence to support this view is reviewed, along with the types of solutions being applied in Ireland and the UK. Attention is drawn to the explicit and implicit decline in standards potentially associated with some of the solutions, particularly for short courses involving mathematics.

Global Analysis Of A Stochastic Two-Scale Network Human Epidemic Dynamic Model With Varying Immunity Period, Divine Wanduku, G. S. Ladde
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
A stochastic SIR epidemic dynamic model with distributed-time-delay, for a two-scale dynamic population is derived. The distributed time delay is the varying naturally acquired immunity period of the removal class of individuals who have recovered from the infection, and have acquired natural immunity to the disease. We investigate the stochastic asymptotic stability of the disease free equilibrium of the epidemic dynamic model, and verify the impact on the eradication of the disease.

The discovery of T cell epitopes is essential not only for gaining knowledge about host response to infectious disease but also for the development of immune-intervention strategies. In Chagas disease, given the size and complexity of the Trypanosoma cruzi proteome and its interaction with the host’s immune system, the fine specificity of T cells has not been extensively studied yet, and this is particularly true for the CD4+ T cell compartment. The aim of the present work was to optimize a protocol for the generation of parasite-specific memory T cell lines, representative of their in vivo precursor populations and capable …

Some Contributions To The Analysis Of Dual-Record System For Estimating Human Population Size., Kiranmoy Chatterjee Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Dual-record System (DRS) The problem of population size estimation is a very important administrative and statistical concern which includes a vast area of application in the fields of epidemiology, demography and official statistics. Federal agencies are generally interested to know the actual size (say, N ) of a specified population or any vital event that occurred in a specified area within a given time span. Census or civil registration system often fails to extract the true size of the population. The degree of inaccuracy depends on the actual size of the population, its diversity and of course, on the quality …

Simulating Within-Vector Generation Of The Malaria Parasite Diversity, Lauren M. Childs, Olivia F. Prosper
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent human malaria parasite, undergoes asexual reproduction within the human host, but reproduces sexually within its vector host, the Anopheles mosquito. Consequently, the mosquito stage of the parasite life cycle provides an opportunity to create genetically novel parasites in multiply-infected mosquitoes, potentially increasing parasite population diversity. Despite the important implications for disease transmission and malaria control, a quantitative mapping of how parasite diversity entering a mosquito relates to diversity of the parasite exiting, has not been undertaken. To examine the role that vector biology plays in modulating parasite diversity, we develop a two-part model framework …
