Solvability Of Boundary Value Problems For Coupled Impulsive Differential Equations With One-Dimensional P-Laplacians, Yuji Liu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper is concerned with a boundary value problem of impulsive differential systems on the whole line with one-dimensional p-Laplacians. By constructing a weighted Banach space and defining a nonlinear operator, together with Schauder's fixed point theorem, sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of at least one solution are established (Theorems 3.1-3.3). Two examples are given to illustrate the main results.
Generalized Convolution Product For An Integral Transform On A Wiener Space, Byoung Soo Kim, Il Yoo
Generalized Convolution Product For An Integral Transform On A Wiener Space, Byoung Soo Kim, Il Yoo
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
We introduce a generalized convolution product $(F*G)_{\vec\alpha,\vec\beta}$ for integral transform ${\mathcal F}_{\gamma,\eta}$ for functionals defined on $K[0,T]$, the space of complex valued continuous functions on $[0,T]$ that vanish at zero. We study some interesting properties of our generalized convolution product and establish various relationships that exist among the generalized convolution product, the integral transform, and the first variation for functionals defined on $K[0,T]$. We also discuss the associativity of the generalized convolution product.

P-Subordination Chains And P-Valence Integral Operators, Erhan Deni̇z, Hali̇t Orhan, Murat Çağlar
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In the present investigation we obtain some sufficient conditions for the analyticity and the $p$-valence of an integral operator in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$. Using these conditions we give some applications for a few different integral operators. The significant relationships and relevance to other results are also given. A number of known univalent conditions would follow upon specializing the parameters involved in our main results.
New Recurrences For Euler's Partition Function, Mircea Merca
New Recurrences For Euler's Partition Function, Mircea Merca
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, the author invokes some consequences of the bisectional pentagonal number theorem to derive two linear recurrence relations for Euler's partition function $p(n)$. As a corollary of these results, we obtain an efficient method to compute the parity of Euler's partition function $p(n)$ that requires only the parity of $p(k)$ with $k \leq n/4$.

Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Fractional Differential Order Systems With Caputo And Riemann--Liouville Derivatives, Javad Alidousti, Reza Khoshsiar Ghaziani, Ali Bayati Eshkaftaki
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper we establish stability theorems for nonlinear fractional orders systems (FDEs) with Caputo and Riemann--Liouville derivatives. In particular, we derive conditions for $ {\bf \cal{F}}$-stability of nonlinear FDEs. By numerical simulations, we verify numerically our theoretical results on a test example.
Chaos-Related Properties On The Product Of Semiflows, Alica Miller, Chad Money
Chaos-Related Properties On The Product Of Semiflows, Alica Miller, Chad Money
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper we generalize some results about the chaos-related properties on the product of two semiflows, which appeared in the lite\-rature in the last few years, to the case of the most general possible acting monoids. In order to do that we introduce some new notions, namely the notions of a directional, psp and sip monoid, and the notion of a strongly transitive semiflow. In particular, we obtain a sufficient condition for the Devaney chaoticity of a product, which works for the (very large) class of the psp acting monoids.
Dissipative Operator And Its Cayley Transform, Eki̇n Uğurlu, Kenan Taş
Dissipative Operator And Its Cayley Transform, Eki̇n Uğurlu, Kenan Taş
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we investigate the spectral properties of the maximaldissipative extension of the minimal symmetric differential operatorgenerated by a second order differential expression and dissipative andeigenparameter dependent boundary conditions. For this purpose we use thecharacteristic function of the maximal dissipative operator and inverseoperator. This investigation is done by the characteristic function of theCayley transform of the maximal dissipative operator, which is a completelynonunitary contraction belonging to the class $C_{0}.$ Using Solomyak'smethod we also introduce the self-adjoint dilation of the maximal dissipativeoperator and incoming/outgoing eigenfunctions of the dilation. Moreover, weinvestigate other properties of the Cayley transform of the maximaldissipative operator.

Braided Regular Crossed Modules Bifibered Over Regular Groupoids, Alper Odabaş, Erdal Ulualan
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
We show that the forgetful functor from the category ofbraided regular crossed modules to the category of regular (or whiskered) groupoids is a fibration and also a cofibration.

Unions And Ideals Of Locally Strongly Porous Sets, Maya Altinok, Oleksiy Dovgoshey, Mehmet Küçükaslan
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
For subsets of $\mathbb R^+ = [0,∞)$ we introduce a notion of coherently porous sets as the sets for which the upper limit in the definition of porosity at a point is attained along the same sequence. We prove that the union of two strongly porous at $0$ sets is strongly porous if and only if these sets are coherently porous. This result leads to a characteristic property of the intersection of all maximal ideals contained in the family of strongly porous at $0$ subsets of $\mathbb R^+$. It is also shown that the union of a set $A \subseteq …

Generalized Crossed Modules And Group-Groupoids, Mustafa Habi̇l Gürsoy, Hati̇ce Aslan, İlhan İçen
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this present work, we present the concept of a crossed module over generalized groupsand we call it a "generalized crossed module". We also define a generalizedgroup-groupoid. Furthermore, we show that the category of generalized crossedmodules is equivalent to that of generalized group-groupoids whose object sets are abelian generalized group.

Extension Of The Darboux Frame Into Euclidean 4-Space And Its Invariants, Mustafa Düldül, Bahar Uyar Düldül, Nuri̇ Kuruoğlu, Ertuğrul Özdamar
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, by considering a Frenet curve lying on an oriented hypersurface, we extend the Darboux frame field into Euclidean 4-space $\mathbb{E}^4$. Depending on the linear independency of the curvature vector with the hypersurface's normal, we obtain two cases for this extension. For each case, we obtain some geometrical meanings of new invariants along the curve on the hypersurface. We also give the relationships between the Frenet frame curvatures and Darboux frame curvatures in $\mathbb{E}^4$. Finally, we compute the expressions of the new invariants of a Frenet curve lying on an implicit hypersurface.
Interaction Graphs Derived From Activation Functions And Their Application To Gene Regulation, Simon Joyce
Interaction Graphs Derived From Activation Functions And Their Application To Gene Regulation, Simon Joyce
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
Interaction graphs are graphic representations of complex networks of mutually interacting components. Their main application is in the field of gene regulatory networks, where they are used to visualize how the expression levels of genes activate or inhibit the expression levels of other genes.
First we develop a natural transformation of activation functions and their derived interaction graphs, called conjugation, that is related to a natural transformation of signed digraphs called switching isomorphism. This is a useful tool for the analysis of interaction graphs used throughout the rest of the dissertation.
We then discuss the question of what restrictions, if …
A Study Of Conductance For A Random, Hierarchically-Structured Material, Daniel Salvador
A Study Of Conductance For A Random, Hierarchically-Structured Material, Daniel Salvador
Honors Theses
I consider a mathematical model for the conductance of a system formed by a hi- erarchical network of random bonds. My simulations show that the net conductance converges to a fixed number γ ≈ 0.35337 when the conductances of the bonds are num- bers selected uniformly at random from the interval (0,1). By linearly approximating the model around γ, I derive a new simplified model which I then study in rigorous mathematical detail. I prove a generalized central limit theorem for the new linearized system.

Valid Plane Trees: Combinatorial Models For Rna Secondary Structures With Watson-Crick Base Pairs, Francis Black, Elizabeth Drellich, Julianna Tymoczko
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
. The combinatorics of RNA plays a central role in biology. Mathematical biologists have several commonly used models for RNA: words in a fixed alphabet (representing the primary sequence of nucleotides) and plane trees (representing the secondary structure, or folding of the RNA sequence). This paper considers an augmented version of the standard model of plane trees, specifically one that incorporates some observed constraints on how the folding can occur. In particular we assume the alphabet consists of complementary pairs, for instance the Watson–Crick pairs A-U and C-G of RNA. Given a word in the alphabet, a valid plane tree …
Vb-Groupoids And Representation Theory Of Lie Groupoids, Alfonso Gracia-Saz, Rajan Amit Mehta
Vb-Groupoids And Representation Theory Of Lie Groupoids, Alfonso Gracia-Saz, Rajan Amit Mehta
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
A VB-groupoid is a Lie groupoid equipped with a compatible linear structure. In this paper, we describe a correspondence, up to isomorphism, between VB-groupoids and 2-term representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids. Under this correspondence, the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid G corresponds to the “adjoint representation” of G. The value of this point of view is that the tangent bundle is canonical, whereas the adjoint representation is not. We define a cochain complex that is canonically associated to any VB-groupoid. The cohomology of this complex is isomorphic to the groupoid cohomology with values in the corresponding representations …
Freedericksz Transition In Nematic Liquid Crystal Couette Flow, Arup Mukherjee
Freedericksz Transition In Nematic Liquid Crystal Couette Flow, Arup Mukherjee
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This article investigates the effects of an external magnetic field on the Freedericksz transition for an elastically anisotropic nematic liquid crystal sample occupying the annular region between two concentric cylinders in relative (slow) rotation. Assuming both azimuthal and radial magnetic fields and strong anchoring conditions for the liquid crystal director perpendicular to the surface of the cylinders, we investigate and characterize the differences in the director distortions and the critical field value for the onset of the transition.
On Degree Bound For Syzygies Of Polynomial Invariants, Zhao Gao
On Degree Bound For Syzygies Of Polynomial Invariants, Zhao Gao
Senior Independent Study Theses
Suppose G is a finite linearly reductive group. The degree bound for the syzygy ideal of the invariant ring of G is given in [2]. We develop the theory of commutative algebra and give the proof from [2] that the ideal of relations of the minimal set of generators of invariant ring of a finite linearly reductive group G is generated in degree at most 2|G|.
Predator-Prey Coevolution Drives Productivity-Richness Relationships In Planktonic Systems, Zhichao Pu, Michael H. Cortez, Lin Jiang
Predator-Prey Coevolution Drives Productivity-Richness Relationships In Planktonic Systems, Zhichao Pu, Michael H. Cortez, Lin Jiang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
The relationship between environmental productivity and species richness often varies among empirical studies, and despite much research, simple explanations for this phenomenon remain elusive. We investigated how phytoplankton and zooplankton coevolution shapes productivity-richness relationships in both phytoplankton and zooplankton, using a simple nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton model that incorporates size-dependent metabolic rates summarized from empirical studies. The model allowed comparisons of evolved species richness across productivity levels and at different evolutionary times. Our results show that disruptive selection leads to evolutionary branching of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Both the time required for evolutionary branching and the number of evolved species in phytoplankton and zooplankton …
Developing Conceptual Understanding And Procedural Fluency In Algebra For High School Students With Intellectual Disability, Andrew J. Wojcik
Developing Conceptual Understanding And Procedural Fluency In Algebra For High School Students With Intellectual Disability, Andrew J. Wojcik
Theses and Dissertations
Teaching students with Intellectual Disability (ID) is a relatively new endeavor. Beginning in 2001 with the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, the general education curriculum integrated algebra across the K-12 curriculum (Kendall, 2011; National Governors Association Center for Best Practices & Council of Chief State School Officers, 2010), and expansion of the curriculum included five intertwined skills (productive disposition, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and conceptual understanding) (Kilpatrick, Swafford, & Findell, 2001). Researchers are just beginning to explore the potential of students with ID with algebra (Browder, Spooner, Ahlgrim-Delzell, Harris & Wakeman, 2008; Creech-Galloway, Collins, Knight, …
Quantum Groups And Knot Invariants, Greg A. Hamilton
Quantum Groups And Knot Invariants, Greg A. Hamilton
Honors Theses
Knot theory arguably holds claim to the title of the mathematical discipline with the most unusually diverse applications. A knot can be defined topologically as an embedding of S1 in R3. Naturally, two knots are topologically equivalent if one cannot be smoothly deformed into the other. The question of whether two knots are equivalent is highly non-trivial, and so the question of knot invariants used to distinguish knots has occupied knot theorists for over a century. Knot theory has found application in statistical mechanics [1], symbolic logic and set theory [2], quantum fi theory [3], quantum computing [4], etc. …
A New Almost Difference Set Construction, David Clayton
A New Almost Difference Set Construction, David Clayton
Honors Theses
This paper considers the appearance of almost difference sets in non-abelian groups. While numerous construction methods for these structures are known in abelian groups, little is known about ADSs in the case where the group elements do not commute. This paper presents a construction method for combining abelian difference sets into nonabelian almost difference sets, while also showing that at least one known almost difference set construction can be generalized to the nonabelian case.
Differential Equations Models Of Pathogen-Induced Single- And Multi-Organ Tissue Damage, Fiona Lynch
Differential Equations Models Of Pathogen-Induced Single- And Multi-Organ Tissue Damage, Fiona Lynch
Honors Theses
The rise of antibiotic resistance has created a significant burden on healthcare systems around the world. Antibiotic resistance arises from the increased use of antibiotic drugs and antimicrobial agents, which kill susceptible bacterial strains, but have little effect on strains that have a mutation allowing them to survive antibiotic treatment, defined as “resistant” strains. With no non-resistant bacteria to compete for resources, the resistant bacteria thrives in this environment, continuing to reproduce and infect the host with an infection that does not respond to traditional antibiotic treatment.
A number of strategies have been proposed to tackle the problem of antibiotic …
Differential Privacy For Growing Databases, Gi Heung (Robin) Kim
Differential Privacy For Growing Databases, Gi Heung (Robin) Kim
Honors Theses
Differential privacy [DMNS06] is a strong definition of database privacy that provides indi- viduals in a database with the guarantee that any particular person’s information has very little effect on the output of any analysis of the overall database. In order for this type of analysis to be practical, it must simultaneously preserve privacy and utility, where utility refers to how well the analysis describes the contents of the database.
An analyst may additionally wish to evaluate how a database’s composition changes over time. Consider a company, for example, that accumulates data from a growing base of customers. This company …
Toward A Scientific Investigation Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Anh Tran
Toward A Scientific Investigation Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Anh Tran
Honors Theses
This thesis does not assume the reader is familiar with artificial neural networks. However, to keep the thesis concise, it assumes the reader is familiar with the standard Machine Learning concepts of training set, validation set, and test set [1]. Their usage is intended to help ensure that the Machine Learning system can generalize its training from input examples used during its training to “similar” kinds of examples never used during its training.
The concept of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is one of the most successful computational concepts today for solving image classification problems. However, CNNs are difficult and …

Gorenstein Injective Envelopes And Covers Over Two Sided Noetherian Rings, Alina Iacob
Gorenstein Injective Envelopes And Covers Over Two Sided Noetherian Rings, Alina Iacob
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
We prove that the class of Gorenstein injective modules is both enveloping and covering over a two sided noetherian ring such that the character modules of Gorenstein injective modules are Gorenstein flat. In the second part of the paper we consider the connection between the Gorenstein injective modules and the strongly cotorsion modules. We prove that when the ring R is commutative noetherian of finite Krull dimension, the class of Gorenstein injective modules coincides with that of strongly cotorsion modules if and only if the ring R is in fact Gorenstein.

Information Hiding With Data Diffusion Using Convolutional Encoding For Super-Encryption, Jonathan Blackledge, Paul Tobin, J. Myeza, C.M. Adolfo
Articles
The unification of data encryption with information hiding methods continues to receive significant attention because of the importance of protecting encrypted information by making it covert. This is because one of the principal limitations in any cryptographic system is that encrypted data flags the potential importance of the data (i.e. the plaintext information that has been encrypted) possibly leading to the launch of an attack which may or may not be successful. Information hiding overcomes this limitation by making the data (which may be the plaintext or the encrypted plaintext) imperceptible, the security of the hidden information being compromised if …
Fiber Products In Commutative Algebra, Keller Vandebogert
Fiber Products In Commutative Algebra, Keller Vandebogert
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to introduce and illustrate some of the deep connections between commutative and homological algebra. We shall cover some of the fundamental definitions and introduce several important classes of commutative rings. The later chapters will consider a particular class of rings, the \emph{fiber product}, and, among other results, show that any Gorenstein fiber product is precisely a one dimensional hypersurface. It will also be shown that any Noetherian local ring with a (nontrivially) decomposable maximal ideal satisfies the Auslander-Reiten conjecture. To conclude, generalizations of results by Takahashi and Atkins-Vraciu shall be presented.
