Conjugacy Classes Of Triple Products In Finite Groups, Emily Salvo, Kevin Hutson Jun 2016

Conjugacy Classes Of Triple Products In Finite Groups, Emily Salvo, Kevin Hutson

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

Let G be a finite group and let T1 be the number of times a triple (x, y, z) ∈ G3 binds X, where X = {xyz, xzy, yxz, yzx, zxy, zyx}, to one conjugacy class. Let T2 denote the number of times a triple G3 breaks X into two conjugacy classes. We have established the following results: i) the probability that a triple (x, y, z) ∈ D3n binds X to one contingency class is ≥ 5/8. ii) for groups such …

The N-Extent Of S3(P,M), Paul Jung, Tucker Mcelroy, Jason Samuels Jun 2016

The N-Extent Of S3(P,M), Paul Jung, Tucker Mcelroy, Jason Samuels

Furman University Electronic Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics

In this paper we estimate xtn (S3 (p, m)), the n-extent of various lens spaces. We give numerical evidence for extending certain results of D. G. Yang [Duke Math. J., 74 (1994), 531-545.] to primes p between 11 and 37. We explain the implication of our results for the topology of 4-dimensional manifolds of positive sectional curvature with nontrivial isometric Zp-actions.

Morphisms And Order Ideals Of Toric Posets, Matthew Macauley Jun 2016

Morphisms And Order Ideals Of Toric Posets, Matthew Macauley

Publications

Toric posets are in some sense a natural “cyclic” version of finite posets in that they capture the fundamental features of a partial order but without the notion of minimal or maximal elements. They can be thought of combinatorially as equivalence classes of acyclic orientations under the equivalence relation generated by converting sources into sinks, or geometrically as chambers of toric graphic hyperplane arrangements. In this paper, we define toric intervals and toric order-preserving maps, which lead to toric analogues of poset morphisms and order ideals. We develop this theory, discuss some fundamental differences between the toric and ordinary cases, …

Development Of Utility Theory And Utility Paradoxes, Timothy E. Dahlstrom Jun 2016

Development Of Utility Theory And Utility Paradoxes, Timothy E. Dahlstrom

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Since the pioneering work of von Neumann and Morgenstern in 1944 there have been many developments in Expected Utility theory. In order to explain decision making behavior economists have created increasingly broad and complex models of utility theory. This paper seeks to describe various utility models, how they model choices among ambiguous and lottery type situations, and how they respond to the Ellsberg and Allais paradoxes. This paper also attempts to communicate the historical development of utility models and provide a fresh perspective on the development of utility models.

Construction Of Energy Preserving Qmf, Jian-Ao Lian, Yonghui Wang Jun 2016

Construction Of Energy Preserving Qmf, Jian-Ao Lian, Yonghui Wang

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Recently, a family of perfect reconstruction (PR) quadrature mirror filterbanks (QMF) with finite impulse response filters (FIR) from systems of biorthogonal refinable functions and wavelets were introduced and also applied to image processing. However, a detailed procedure was absent. The main objective of this paper is to present extensive examples that will provide a thorough process of construction of the new family of PR QMF with FIR filterbanks. These new filters are linearphase due to the symmetry property of their corresponding biorthogonal refinable functions and wavelets. In addition, these filters have odd lengths so that the symmetric extension can be …

On Factorization Of A Special Type Of Vandermonde Rhotrix, P. L. Sharma, Mansi Rehan

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Vandermonde matrices have important role in many branches of applied mathematics such as combinatorics, coding theory and cryptography. Some authors discuss Vandermonde rhotrices in the literature for its mathematical enrichment. Here, we introduce a special type of Vandermonde rhotrix and obtain its LR factorization, namely left and right triangular factorization which is further used to obtain the inverse of the rhotrix.

A New Approach For Solving System Of Local Fractional Partial Differential Equations, Hossein Jafari, Hassan K. Jassim Jun 2016

A New Approach For Solving System Of Local Fractional Partial Differential Equations, Hossein Jafari, Hassan K. Jassim

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we apply a new method for solving system of partial differential equations within local fractional derivative operators. The approximate analytical solutions are obtained by using the local fractional Laplace variational iteration method, which is the coupling method of local fractional variational iteration method and Laplace transform. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the high accuracy and fast convergence of this new algorithm. The obtained results show that the introduced approach is a promising tool for solving system of linear and nonlinear local fractional differential equations. Furthermore, we show that local fractional Laplace variational iteration method is able …

Applications Of Composite Convolution Operators, Anupama Gupta Jun 2016

Applications Of Composite Convolution Operators, Anupama Gupta

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The Composite Convolution Operator is an operator which is obtained by composing Convolution operator with Composition operator. Volterra composite convolution operator is a composition of Volterra convolution operator and Composition operator. The Composite Convolution Operators and Composite Convolution Volterra operators have been defined by using the Expectation operator and Radon-Nikodym derivative. In this paper an attempt has been made to investigate applications of Composite Convolution Operators (CCO) in Integral Convolution Type Equations (ICTE). The study may explore a new technique to solve Fredholm Convolution type integral equations and Volterra Convolution type integral equations. Some methods for solving integral convolution type …

3-Total Super Sum Cordial Labeling By Applying Operations On Some Graphs, Abha Tenguria, Rinku Verma Jun 2016

3-Total Super Sum Cordial Labeling By Applying Operations On Some Graphs, Abha Tenguria, Rinku Verma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The sum cordial labeling is a variant of cordial labeling. In this paper, we investigate 3-Total Super Sum Cordial labeling. This labeling is discussed by applying union operation on some of the graphs. A vertex labeling is assigned as a whole number within the range. For each edge of the graph, assign the label, according to some definite rule, defined for the investigated labeling. Any graph which satisfies 3-Total Super Sum Cordial labeling is known as the 3-Total Super Sum Cordial graphs. Here, we prove that some of the graphs like the union of Cycle and Path graphs, the union …

Efficient Experimental Design Strategies In Toxicology And Bioassay, Timothy O'Brien Jun 2016

Efficient Experimental Design Strategies In Toxicology And Bioassay, Timothy O'Brien

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Modelling in bioassay often uses linear or nonlinear logistic regression models, and relative potency is often the focus when two or more compounds are to be compared. Estimation in these settings is typically based on likelihood methods. Here, we focus on the 3-parameter model representation given in Finney (1978) in which the relative potency is a model parameter. Using key matrix results and the general equivalence theorem of Kiefer & Wolfowitz (1960), this paper establishes key design properties of the optimal design for relative potency using this model. We also highlight aspects of subset designs for the relative potency parameter …

Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Skewed Alternatives, Naveen K. Bansal, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Mehdi Maadooliat Jun 2016

Testing Multiple Hypotheses With Skewed Alternatives, Naveen K. Bansal, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Mehdi Maadooliat

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In many practical cases of multiple hypothesis problems, it can be expected that the alternatives are not symmetrically distributed. If it is known a priori that the distributions of the alternatives are skewed, we show that this information yields high power procedures as compared to the procedures based on symmetric alternatives when testing multiple hypotheses. We propose a Bayesian decision theoretic rule for multiple directional hypothesis testing, when the alternatives are distributed as skewed, under a constraint on a mixed directional false discovery rate. We compare the proposed rule with a frequentist's rule of Benjamini and Yekutieli (2005) using simulations. …

Resolving Classes And Resolvable Spaces In Rational Homotopy Theory, Timothy L. Clark Jun 2016

Resolving Classes And Resolvable Spaces In Rational Homotopy Theory, Timothy L. Clark

Dissertations

A class of topological spaces is called a resolving class if it is closed under weak equivalences and homotopy limits. Letting R(A) denote the smallest resolving class containing a space A, we say X is A-resolvable if X is in R(A), which induces a partial order on spaces. These concepts are dual to the well-studied notions of closed class and cellular space, where the induced partial order is known as the Dror Farjoun Cellular Lattice. Progress has been made toward illuminating the structure of the Cellular Lattice. For example: Chachólski, Parent, and Stanley have shown that it …

On Extension Of Mittag-Leffler Function, Ekta Mittal, Rupakshi M. Pandey, Sunil Joshi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study the extended Mittag -Leffler function by using generalized beta function and obtain various differential properties, integral representations. Further, we discuss Mellin transform of these functions in terms of generalized Wright hyper geometric function and evaluate Laplace transform, and Whittaker transform in terms of extended beta function. Finally, several interesting special cases of extended Mittag -Leffler functions have also be given.

Independent Domination In Some Wheel Related Graphs, S. K. Vaidya, R. M. Pandit

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A set S of vertices in a graph G is called an independent dominating set if S is both independent and dominating. The independent domination number of G is the minimum cardinality of an independent dominating set in G . In this paper, we investigate the exact value of independent domination number for some wheel related graphs.

Cobb-Douglas Based Firm Production Model Under Fuzzy Environment And Its Solution Using Geometric Programming, Palash Mandal, Arindam Garai, Tapan K. Roy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider Cobb-Douglas production function based model in a firm under fuzzy environment, and its solution technique by making use of geometric programming. A firm may use many finite inputs such as labour, capital, coal, iron etc. to produce one single output. It is well known that the primary intention of using production function is to determine maximum output for any given combination of inputs. Also, the firm may gain competitive advantages if it can buy and sell in any quantities at exogenously given prices, independent of initial production decisions. On the other hand, in reality, constraints …

Certain Operations On Bipolar Fuzzy Graph Structures, Muhammad Akram, Rabia Akmal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A graph structure is a useful tool in solving the combinatorial problems in different areas of computer science and computational intelligence systems. A bipolar fuzzy graph structure is a generalization of a bipolar fuzzy graph. In this paper, we present several different types of operations, including composition, Cartesian product, strong product, cross product, and lexicographic product on bipolar fuzzy graph structures. We also investigate some properties of operations.

American Spread Option Pricing With Stochastic Interest Rate, An Jiang Jun 2016

American Spread Option Pricing With Stochastic Interest Rate, An Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

In financial markets, spread option is a derivative security with two underlying assets and the payoff of the spread option depends on the difference of these assets. We consider American style spread option which allows the owners to exercise it at any time before the maturity. The complexity of pricing American spread option is that the boundary of the corresponding partial differential equation which determines the option price is unknown and the model for the underlying assets is two-dimensional.In this dissertation, we incorporate the stochasticity to the interest rate and assume that it satisfies the Vasicek model or the CIR …
