Anti-Invariant Riemannian Submersions From Kenmotsu Manifolds Onto Riemannian Manifolds, Ayşe Beri̇, İrem Küpeli̇ Erken, Cengi̇zhan Murathan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The purpose of this paper is to study anti-invariant Riemannian submersions from Kenmotsu manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. Several fundamental results in this respect are proved. The integrability of the distributions and the geometry of foliations are investigated. We proved the nonexistence of (anti-invariant) Riemannian submersions from Kenmotsu manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds such that the characteristic vector field $\xi $ is a vertical vector field. We gave a method to get horizontally conformal submersion examples from warped product manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. Furthermore, we presented an example of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions in the case where the characteristic vector field $\xi $ …

A Continuous Tale On Continuous And Separately Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2016

A Continuous Tale On Continuous And Separately Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Assume that you have developed a good set of tools allowing you to decide which real functions of one real variable, f : R → R, are continuous. (Q): How can such a tool-box be utilized to decide on the continuity of the functions g : R n → R of n real variables? This is one of the questions which must be faced by any student taking multivariable calculus. Of course, such a student is following the footsteps of many generations of mathematicians, which were, and still are, struggling with the same general question. The aim of this article …

Subgroups Of Finite Wreath Product Groups For P=3, Jessica L. Gonda Jan 2016

Subgroups Of Finite Wreath Product Groups For P=3, Jessica L. Gonda

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Let M be the additive abelian group of 3-by-3 matrices whose entries are from the ring of integers modulo 9. The problem of determining all the normal subgroups of the regular wreath product group P=Z9≀(Z3 × Z3) that are contained in its base subgroup is equivalent to the problem of determining the subgroups of M that are invariant under two particular endomorphisms of M. In this thesis we give a partial solution to the latter problem by implementing a systematic approach using concepts from group theory and linear algebra.

Independent Domination Of Subcubic Graphs, Bruce Allan Priddy Jan 2016

Independent Domination Of Subcubic Graphs, Bruce Allan Priddy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Let G be a simple graph. The independent domination number i(G) is the minimum cardinality among all maximal independent sets of G. A graph is subcubic whenever the maximum degree is at most three. In this paper, we will show that the independent domination number of a connected subcubic graph of order n having minimum degree at least two is at most 3(n+1)/7, providing a sharp upper bound for subcubic connected graphs with minimum degree at least two.

On Topological Indices And Domination Numbers Of Graphs, Shaohui Wang Jan 2016

On Topological Indices And Domination Numbers Of Graphs, Shaohui Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Topological indices and dominating problems are popular topics in Graph Theory. There are various topological indices such as degree-based topological indices, distance-based topological indices and counting related topological indices et al. These topological indices correlate certain physicochemical properties such as boiling point, stability of chemical compounds. The concepts of domination number and independent domination number, introduced from the mid-1860s, are very fundamental in Graph Theory. In this dissertation, we provide new theoretical results on these two topics. We study k-trees and cactus graphs with the sharp upper and lower bounds of the degree-based topological indices(Multiplicative Zagreb indices). The extremal cacti …

A Class Of Graphs Approaching Vizing's Conjecture, Aziz Contractor, Elliot Krop Jan 2016

A Class Of Graphs Approaching Vizing's Conjecture, Aziz Contractor, Elliot Krop

Theory & Applications of Graphs

For any graph G=(V,E), a subset S ⊆ V dominates G if all vertices are contained in the closed neighborhood of S, that is N[S]=V. The minimum cardinality over all such S is called the domination number, written γ(G). In 1963, V.G. Vizing conjectured that γ(G □ H) ≥ γ(G)γ(H) where □ stands for the Cartesian product of graphs. In this note, we define classes of graphs Αn, for n≥0, so that every graph belongs to some such class, and Α0 corresponds to class A of Bartsalkin and German. We prove that …

Smallest Eigenvalues For A Fractional Boundary Value Problem With A Fractional Boundary Condition, Angela Koester

Online Theses and Dissertations

We establish the existence of and then compare smallest eigenvalues for the fractional boundary value problems D_(0^+)^α u+λ_1 p(t)u=0 and $D_(0^+)^α u+λ_2 q(t)u=0,0< t< 1, satisfying the boundary conditions when n-1<α≤ n. First, we consider the case when 0<β

Self Dual Codes And The Indecomposable Building Blocks, Nathan John Russell Jan 2016

Self Dual Codes And The Indecomposable Building Blocks, Nathan John Russell

Online Theses and Dissertations

Just like prime numbers are to integers, indecomposable codes are to self dual codes. This paper gives an explicit listing of the first few families of binary self dual codes, up to length 16. Binary self dual codes that are decomposable are given as a composition of indecomposable codes. The indecomposable codes are explicitly listed with generator matrices. The complete classifying process is outlined.

Low-Dimensional Reality-Based Algebras, Rachel Victoria Barber Jan 2016

Low-Dimensional Reality-Based Algebras, Rachel Victoria Barber

Online Theses and Dissertations

In this paper we introduce the definition of a reality-based algebra (RBA) as well as a subclass of reality-based algebras, table algebras. Using sesquilinear forms, we prove that a reality-based algebra is semisimple. We look at a specific reality-based algebra of dimension 5 and provide formulas for the structure constants of this algebra. We determine by looking at these structure constants and setting conditions on specific structural components when this particular reality-based algebra is a table algebra. In fact, this will be a noncommutative table algebra of dimension 5.

The Monochromatic Column Problem: The Prime Case, Loran Elizabeth Crowell Jan 2016

The Monochromatic Column Problem: The Prime Case, Loran Elizabeth Crowell

Online Theses and Dissertations

Let p1, p2, . . . , pn be pairwise coprime positive integers and let P = p1p2 · · · pn. Let 0,1,...,m−1 be a sequence of m different colors. Let A be an n×mP matrix of colors in which row i consists of blocks of pi consecutive entries of the same color, with colors 0 through m − 1 repeated cyclically. The Monochromatic Column problem is to determine the number of columns of A in which every entry is the same color. A partial solution for the case when m is prime is given.

Tessellations: An Artistic And Mathematical Look At The Work Of Maurits Cornelis Escher, Emily E. Bachmeier Jan 2016

Tessellations: An Artistic And Mathematical Look At The Work Of Maurits Cornelis Escher, Emily E. Bachmeier

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study was to learn more about the mathematics of tessellations and their artistic potential. Whenever I have seen tessellations, I always admire them. It is baffling how such complicated shapes can be repeated infinitely on the plane. This research aimed to increase the amount of tessellation information and activities available to secondary mathematics teachers by connecting the tessellations of Maurits Cornelis Escher with their underlying mathematics in order to use them for teaching secondary mathematics. The overarching premise of this study was to create something that would also be beneficial in my career as a secondary …

Mathematical And Anthropological Analysis Of Northern Luzon Funeral Textile, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, Analyn V. Salvador-Amores Jan 2016

Mathematical And Anthropological Analysis Of Northern Luzon Funeral Textile, Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, Analyn V. Salvador-Amores

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The study presents a mathematical analysis and provides an anthropological perspective of the funeral textile of the indigenous communities in northern Luzon, Philippines. In particular, a symmetry analysis is performed, based on principles of group theory and transformation geometry, on the various repeating patterns found in funeral garments and blankets. Results show that particular frieze groups and plane crystallographic groups are favored due to choice of motifs which are reflective of cultural beliefs and funeral traditions, as well as weaving style and methodology. The results of the analysis point to the depth of mathematics present in the work of the …

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We prove a conjecture of Przytycki which asserts that the n-quandle of a link L in the 3-sphere is finite if and only if the fundamental group of the n-fold cyclic branched cover of the 3-sphere, branched over L, is finite.

The Segal–Shale–Weil Representation, The Indices Of Kashiwara And Maslov, And Quantum Mechanics, Michael C. Berg Jan 2016

The Segal–Shale–Weil Representation, The Indices Of Kashiwara And Maslov, And Quantum Mechanics, Michael C. Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We produce a connection between the Weil 2-cocycles defining the local and adèlic metaplectic groups defined over a global field, i.e. the double covers of the attendant local and adèlic symplectic groups, and local and adèlic Maslov indices of the type considered by Souriau and Leray. With the latter tied to phase integrals occurring in quantum mechanics, we provide a formulation of quadratic reciprocity for the underlying field, first in terms of an adèlic phase integral, and then in terms of generalized time evolution unitary operators.

Colorings, Determinants And Alexander Polynomials For Spatial Graphs, Terry Kong, Alec Lewald, Blake Mellor, Vadim Pigrish Jan 2016

Colorings, Determinants And Alexander Polynomials For Spatial Graphs, Terry Kong, Alec Lewald, Blake Mellor, Vadim Pigrish

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

A {\em balanced} spatial graph has an integer weight on each edge, so that the directed sum of the weights at each vertex is zero. We describe the Alexander module and polynomial for balanced spatial graphs (originally due to Kinoshita \cite{ki}), and examine their behavior under some common operations on the graph. We use the Alexander module to define the determinant and p-colorings of a balanced spatial graph, and provide examples. We show that the determinant of a spatial graph determines for which p the graph is p-colorable, and that a p-coloring of a graph corresponds to a representation of …

Involutory Quandles Of (2,2,R)-Montesinos Links, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2016

Involutory Quandles Of (2,2,R)-Montesinos Links, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In this paper we show that Montesinos links of the form L(1/2, 1/2, p/q;e), which we call (2,2,r)-Montesinos links, have finite involutory quandles. This generalizes an observation of Winker regarding the (2, 2, q)-pretzel links. We also describe some properties of these quandles.

The Regularity Of The Boundary Of A Multidimensional Aggregation Patch, Andrea L. Bertozzi, John B. Garnett, Thomas Laurent, Joan Verdera Jan 2016

The Regularity Of The Boundary Of A Multidimensional Aggregation Patch, Andrea L. Bertozzi, John B. Garnett, Thomas Laurent, Joan Verdera

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We consider solutions to the aggregation equation with Newtonian potential where the initial data are the characteristic function of a domain with boundary of class $C^{1+\gamma}$ ,$0<\gamma<1$. Such initial data are known to yield a solution that, going forward in time, retains a patch-like structure with a constant time-dependent density inside an evolving region, which collapses on itself in a finite time, and which, going backward in time, converges in an $L^1$ sense to a self-similar expanding ball solution. In this work, we prove $C^{1+\gamma}$ regularity of the domain's boundary on the time interval on which the solution exists as an $L^\infty$ patch, up to the collapse time going forward in time and for all finite times going backward in time.

Some Convergence Properties Of Minkowski Functionals Given By Polytopes, Jesse Moeller Jan 2016

Some Convergence Properties Of Minkowski Functionals Given By Polytopes, Jesse Moeller

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this work we investigate the behavior of the Minkowski Functionals admitted by a sequence of sets which converge to the unit ball ‘from the inside’. We begin in R 2 and use this example to build intuition as we extend to the more general R n case. We prove, in the penultimate chapter, that convergence ‘from the inside’ in this setting is equivalent to two other characterizations of the convergence: a geometric characterization which has to do with the sizes of the faces of each polytope in the sequence converging to zero, and the convergence of the Minkowski functionals …

Group-Antimagic Labelings Of Multi-Cyclic Graphs, Dan Roberts, Richard M. Low Jan 2016

Group-Antimagic Labelings Of Multi-Cyclic Graphs, Dan Roberts, Richard M. Low

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Let Α be a non-trivial abelian group. A connected simple graph G = (V, E) is Α-antimagic if there exists an edge labeling f: Ε(G) → A \{0} such that the induced vertex labeling f+: V(G) → Α, defined by f+(v) = Σ{f(u,v): (u, v) ∈ E(G)}, is a one-to-one map. The integer-antimagic spectrum of a graph G is the set IAM(G) = {κ: G is ℤk - antimagic and κ ≥ 2}. In this paper, we analyze the integer-antimagic spectra for various classes of multi-cyclic graphs.

An Extremal Problem For Finite Lattices, John Goldwasser, Brendan Nagle, Andres Saez Jan 2016

An Extremal Problem For Finite Lattices, John Goldwasser, Brendan Nagle, Andres Saez

Theory & Applications of Graphs

For a fixed M x N integer lattice L(M,N), we consider the maximum size of a subset A of L(M,N) which contains no squares of prescribed side lengths k(1),...,k(t). We denote this size by ex(L(M,N), {k(1),...,k(t)}), and when t = 1, we abbreviate this parameter to ex(L(M,N), k), where k = k(1).

Our first result gives an exact formula for ex(L( …

Eternal Independent Sets In Graphs, Yair Caro, William F. Klostermeyer Jan 2016

Eternal Independent Sets In Graphs, Yair Caro, William F. Klostermeyer

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The use of mobile guards to protect a graph has received much attention in the literature of late in the form of eternal dominating sets, eternal vertex covers and other models of graph protection. In this paper, eternal independent sets are introduced. These are independent sets such that the following can be iterated forever: a vertex in the independent set can be replaced with a neighboring vertex and the resulting set is independent.

Classifying Resolving Lists By Distances Between Members, Paul Feit Jan 2016

Classifying Resolving Lists By Distances Between Members, Paul Feit

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Let G be a connected graph and let w1,…wr be a list of vertices. We refer the choice of a triple (r;G;w1,…wr), as a metric selection. Let ρ be the shortest path metric of G. We say that w1,…wr resolves G (metricly) if the function c:V(G) → ℤr given by

x → (ρ (w1,x),…,ρ(wr,x))

is injective. We refer to c as the code map and to its image as the codes of the triple (r;G;w1,…,wr).

This paper proves basic results …

Participants were drawn from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort, a randomly selected Mexican American cohort in Texas on the US-Mexico border. Subjects were divided into 4 phenotypes according to metabolic health and BMI: metabolically healthy normal weight, metabolically healthy overweight/obese, metabolically unhealthy normal weight, and metabolically unhealthy overweight/obese. Metabolic health was defined as having less than 2 metabolic abnormalities. Overweight/obese status was assessed by BMI higher than 25 kg/m2. Diabetes was defined by the 2010 ADA definition or by being on a diabetic …

A Polyhedral Model Of Partitions With Bounded Differences And A Bijective Proof Of A Theorem Of Andrews, Beck, And Robbins, Felix Breuer, Brandt Kronholm Jan 2016

A Polyhedral Model Of Partitions With Bounded Differences And A Bijective Proof Of A Theorem Of Andrews, Beck, And Robbins, Felix Breuer, Brandt Kronholm

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The smallest part is a rational function. This result is similar to the closely related case of partitions with fixed differences between largest and smallest parts which has recently been studied through analytic methods by Andrews, Beck, and Robbins. Our approach is geometric: We model partitions with bounded differences as lattice points in an infinite union of polyhedral cones. Surprisingly, this infinite union tiles a single simplicial cone. This construction then leads to a bijection that can be interpreted on a purely combinatorial level.

An Application Of The Spectral Theorem To The Laplacian On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken Jan 2016

An Application Of The Spectral Theorem To The Laplacian On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

There continues to be great interest in the study of the heat equation on Riemannian manifolds. This may be due to the remarkable more recent work of Patodi [1]. It may also be due in part to the asymptotic expansion of Minakshisundaram and Pleijel. The heat equation involves a parabolic partial differential equation that describes the distribution of heat in a given region over time. This equation has also appears in probability theory to describe random walks. The heat equation is also of importance in Riemannian geometry, topology and applied mathematics.

Asymptotic And Optimal Liouville Properties For Wolff Type Integral Systems, John Villavert Jan 2016

Asymptotic And Optimal Liouville Properties For Wolff Type Integral Systems, John Villavert

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This article examines the properties of positive solutions to fully nonlinear systems of integral equations involving Hardy and Wolff potentials. The first part of the paper establishes an optimal existence result and a Liouville type theorem for the integral systems. Then, the second part examines the decay rates of positive bound states at infinity. In particular, a complete characterization of the asymptotic properties of bounded and decaying solutions is given by showing that such solutions vanish at infinity with two principle rates: the slow decay rates and the fast decay rates. In fact, the two rates can be fully distinguished …

Stability Analysis And Hopf Bifurcation Of Density-Dependent Predator-Prey Systems With Beddington-Deangelis Functional Response, Xin Jiang, Zhikun She, Zhaosheng Feng Jan 2016

Stability Analysis And Hopf Bifurcation Of Density-Dependent Predator-Prey Systems With Beddington-Deangelis Functional Response, Xin Jiang, Zhikun She, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article, we study a density-dependent predator-prey system with the Beddington-DeAngelis functional response for stability and Hopf bifurcation under certain parametric conditions. We start with the condition of the existence of the unique positive equilibrium, and provide two sufficient conditions for its local stability by the Lyapunov function method and the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, respectively. Then, we establish sufficient conditions for the global stability of the positive equilibrium by proving the non-existence of closed orbits in the first quadrant R²+. Afterwards, we analyze the Hopf bifurcation geometrically by exploring the monotonic property of the trace of the Jacobean matrix with …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective: To demonstrate the adverse impact of ignoring statistical interactions in regression models used in epidemiologic studies.

Study design and setting: Based on different scenarios that involved known values for coefficient of the interaction term in Cox regression models we generated 1000 samples of size 600 each. The simulated samples and a real life data set from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort were used to evaluate the effect of ignoring statistical interactions in these models.

Results: Compared to correctly specified Cox regression models with interaction terms, misspecified models without interaction terms resulted in up to 8.95 fold bias in estimated …
