Quadraticeigenparameter-Dependent Quantum Difference Equations, Yelda Aygar Küçükevci̇li̇oğlu Jan 2016

Quadraticeigenparameter-Dependent Quantum Difference Equations, Yelda Aygar Küçükevci̇li̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The main aim of this paper is to construct quantum extension of the discrete Sturm--Liouville equation consisting of second-order difference equation and boundary conditions that depend on a quadratic eigenvalue parameter. We consider a boundary value problem (BVP) consisting of a second-order quantum difference equation and boundary conditions that depend on the quadratic eigenvalue parameter. We present a condition that guarantees that this BVP has a finite number of eigenvalues and spectral singularities with finite multiplicities.

G-Frames For Operators In Hilbert $C^{\Ast}$-Modules, Zhongqi Xiang, Yongming Li Jan 2016

G-Frames For Operators In Hilbert $C^{\Ast}$-Modules, Zhongqi Xiang, Yongming Li

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We present a generalization of g-frames related to an adjointable operator $K$ on a Hilbert $C^{\ast}$-module, which we call $K$-g-frames. We obtain several characterizations of $K$-g-frames and we also give conditions under which the removal of an element from a $K$-g-frame leaves again a $K$-g-frame. In addition, we define a concept of dual, and using it we study the relation between a $K$-g-frame and a g-Bessel sequence with respect to different sequences of Hilbert $C^{\ast}$-modules.

Combining Euclidean And Adequate Rings, Huanyin Chen, Marjan Sheibani Jan 2016

Combining Euclidean And Adequate Rings, Huanyin Chen, Marjan Sheibani

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We combine Euclidean and adequate rings, and introduce a new type of ring. A ring $R$ is called an E-adequate ring provided that for any $a,b\in R$ such that $aR+bR=R$ and $c\neq 0$ there exists $y\in R$ such that $(a+by,c)$ is an E-adequate pair. We shall prove that an E-adequate ring is an elementary divisor ring if and only if it is a Hermite ring. Elementary matrix reduction over such rings is also studied. We thereby generalize Domsha, Vasiunyk, and Zabavsky's theorems to a much wider class of rings.

Multiple Positive Solutions Of Nonlinear $M$-Point Dynamic Equations For $P$-Laplacian On Time Scales, Abdülkadi̇r Doğan Jan 2016

Multiple Positive Solutions Of Nonlinear $M$-Point Dynamic Equations For $P$-Laplacian On Time Scales, Abdülkadi̇r Doğan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we study the existence of positive solutions of a nonlinear $ m $-point $p$-Laplacian dynamic equation $$(\phi_p(x^\Delta(t)))^\nabla+w(t)f(t,x(t),x^\Delta(t))=0,\hspace{2cm} t_1< t 1.$ Sufficient conditions for the existence of at least three positive solutions of the problem are obtained by using a fixed point theorem. The interesting point is the nonlinear term $f$ is involved with the first order derivative explicitly. As an application, an example is given to illustrate the result.

The Generalized Reciprocal Super Catalan Matrix, Emrah Kiliç, Talha Arikan Jan 2016

The Generalized Reciprocal Super Catalan Matrix, Emrah Kiliç, Talha Arikan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The reciprocal super Catalan matrix studied by Prodinger is further generalized, introducing two additional parameters. Explicit formulae are derived for the $LU$-decomposition and their inverses, as well as the Cholesky decomposition. The approach is to use $q$-analysis and to leave the justification of the necessary identities to the $q$-version of Zeilberger's celebrated algorithm.

On Congruences Related To Central Binomial Coefficients, Harmonic And Lucasnumbers, Si̇bel Koparal, Neşe Ömür

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, using some combinatorial identities, we present new congruences involving central binomial coefficients and harmonic, Catalan, and Fibonacci numbers. For example, for an odd prime $p$, we have \begin{eqnarray*} \sum\limits_{k=1}^{\left( p-1\right) /2}\left( -1\right) ^{k}\binom{2k}{k}% H_{k-1} &\equiv &\frac{2^{p}}{p}\left( 2F_{p+1}-5^{\left( p-1\right) /2}-1\right) ({\rm mod\ }p), \\ \sum\limits_{k=0}^{\left( p-1\right) /2}\frac{H_{k}C_{k}}{\left( -4\right) ^{k}} &\equiv &2\frac{Q_{p+1}}{p}-\frac{2^{p+1}}{p}\left( 1+2^{\left( p+1\right) /2}\right) ({\rm mod\ }p), \end{eqnarray*}% and for $\left( \frac{5}{p}\right) =1,$% \begin{equation*} \sum\limits_{k=1}^{\left( p-1\right) /2}\binom{2k}{k}\frac{H_{k-1}F_{k}}{% \left( -4\right) ^{k}}\equiv \frac{1}{p}\left( F_{2p+1}-F_{p+2}\right) -% \frac{2^{p}}{p}F_{p-1}({\rm mod\ }p), \end{equation*} where $\left\{ F_{n}\right\} $ is the Fibonacci sequence and $\left\{ Q_{n}\right\} $ is the Pell-Lucas sequence.

Factorizations Related To The Reciprocal Pascal Matrix, Helmut Prodinger Jan 2016

Factorizations Related To The Reciprocal Pascal Matrix, Helmut Prodinger

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The reciprocal Pascal matrix has entries $\binom{i+j}{j}^{-1}$. Explicit formul$\ae{}$ for its LU-decomposition, the LU-decomposition of its inverse, and some related matrices are obtained. For all results, $q$-analogues are also presented.

Lagrangian Description, Symplectization, And Eulerian Dynamics Of Incompressible Fluids, Hasan Gümral Jan 2016

Lagrangian Description, Symplectization, And Eulerian Dynamics Of Incompressible Fluids, Hasan Gümral

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Eulerian dynamical equations in a three-dimensional domain are used to construct a formal symplectic structure on time-extended space. Symmetries, invariants, and conservation laws are related to this geometric structure. The symplectic structure incorporates dynamics of helicities as identities. The generator of the infinitesimal dilation for symplectic two-form can be interpreted as a current vector for helicity. Symplectic dilation implies the existence of contact hypersurfaces. In particular, these include contact structures on the space of streamlines and on the Bernoulli surfaces.

Some Upper Bounds On The Dimension Of The Schur Multiplierof A Pair Of Nilpotent Lie Algebras, Behrouz Edalatzadeh Jan 2016

Some Upper Bounds On The Dimension Of The Schur Multiplierof A Pair Of Nilpotent Lie Algebras, Behrouz Edalatzadeh

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $(L,N)$ be a pair of Lie algebras where $N$ is an ideal of the finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra $L$. Some upper bounds on the dimension of the Schur multiplier of $(L,N)$ are obtained without considering the existence of a complement for $N$. These results are applied to derive a new bound on the dimension of the Schur multiplier of a nilpotent Lie algebra.

Problems In Matricially Derived Solid Banach Sequence Spaces, Peter D. Johnson, Faruk Polat Jan 2016

Problems In Matricially Derived Solid Banach Sequence Spaces, Peter D. Johnson, Faruk Polat

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $\mathbb{F}^\mathbb{N}$ denote the vector space of all scalar sequences. If $A$ is an infinite matrix with nonnegative entries and $\lambda$ is a solid subspace of $\mathbb{F}^\mathbb{N}$, then $ sol-A^{-1}(\lambda)=\{x\in \mathbb{F}^\mathbb{N} : A x \in \lambda\} $ is also a solid subspace of $\mathbb{F}^\mathbb{N}$ that, under certain conditions on $A$ and $\lambda$, inherits a solid topological vector space topology from any such topology on $\lambda$. Letting $\Lambda_0=\lambda$ and $\Lambda_m=sol-A^{-1}(\Lambda_{m-1})$ for $m>0$, we derive an infinite sequence $\Lambda_0, \Lambda_1, \Lambda_2,...$ of solid subspaces of $\mathbb{F}^\mathbb{N}$ from the inputs $A$ and $\lambda$. For $A$ and $\lambda$ confined to certain classes, we …

Existence Of Positive Solutions For Difference Systems Coming From A Model For Burglary, Tianlan Chen, Ruyun Ma Jan 2016

Existence Of Positive Solutions For Difference Systems Coming From A Model For Burglary, Tianlan Chen, Ruyun Ma

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we use the Brouwer degree to prove existence results of positive solutions for the following difference systems: $$\aligned &{D}_k\Delta^2(A_{k-1}-A^0_{k-1})-(A_{k}-A^0_{k})+N_kf(k, A_{k})=0,\ \ k\in[2, n-1]_\mathbb{Z},\\ &\Delta^2N_{k-1}+\Delta[g(k, A_{k}, \Delta A_{k-1})N_k]-w^2(N_k-1)=0,\ \ k\in[2, n-1]_\mathbb{Z},\\ &\Delta A_{1}=0=\Delta A_{n-1},\ \ \Delta N_{1}=0=\Delta N_{n-1}, \endaligned\eqno $$ where the assumptions on $w,\ D_k, A_k^0, f$, and $g$ are motivated by some mathematical models for the burglary of houses.

Chebyshev Inversion Of The Radon Transform, Jared Cameron Szi Jan 2016

Chebyshev Inversion Of The Radon Transform, Jared Cameron Szi

Theses and Dissertations

In its two-dimensional form, the Radon transform of an image (function) is a collection of projections of the image which are parameterized by a set of angles (from the positive x-axis) and distances from the origin. Computational methods of the Radon transform are important in many image processing and computer vision problems, such as pattern recognition and the reconstruction of medical images. However, computability requires the construction of a discrete analog to the Radon transform, along with discrete alternatives for its inversion. In this paper, we present discrete analogs using classical methods of Chebyshev polynomial reconstruction, along with a new …

On A Constant Associated With The Prouhet-Tarry-Escott Problem, Maria E. Markovich Jan 2016

On A Constant Associated With The Prouhet-Tarry-Escott Problem, Maria E. Markovich

Theses and Dissertations

For n a positive integer, the Prouhet-Tarry-Escott Problem asks for two different sets of n positive integers for which the sum of the kth powers of the elements of one set is equal to the sum of the kth powers of the elements of the second set for each positive integer k < n. For n > 12, it is not known whether such sets exist. I will give some background on this problem and then show how Newton polygons can be used to determine information on the size of the 2-adic value of a certain constant associated with the problem.

An Inner-Outer Factorization In ℓp With Applications To Arma Processes, Raymond Cheng, William T. Ross Jan 2016

An Inner-Outer Factorization In ℓp With Applications To Arma Processes, Raymond Cheng, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The following inner-outer type factorization is obtained for the sequence space ℓp: if the complex sequence F = (F0, F1,F2,...) decays geometrically, then for an p sufficiently close to 2 there exists J and G in ℓp such that F = J * G; J is orthogonal in the Birkhoff-James sense to all of its forward shifts SJ, S2J, S3J, ...; J and F generate the same S-invariant subspace of ℓp; and G is a cyclic vector for S on ℓ …

Best Approximations, Lethargy Theorems And Smoothness, Caleb Case Jan 2016

Best Approximations, Lethargy Theorems And Smoothness, Caleb Case

CMC Senior Theses

In this paper we consider sequences of best approximation. We first examine the rho best approximation function and its applications, through an example in approximation theory and two new examples in calculating n-widths. We then further discuss approximation theory by examining a modern proof of Weierstrass's Theorem using Dirac sequences, and providing a new proof of Chebyshev's Equioscillation Theorem, inspired by the de La Vallee Poussin Theorem. Finally, we examine the limits of approximation theorem by looking at Bernstein Lethargy theorem, and a modern generalization to infinite-dimensional subspaces. We all note that smooth functions are bounded by Jackson's Inequalities, but …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The Csu Peer Leader Program On Student Performance In 2014-2015, Harrison E. Sharitt

Theses and Dissertations

In efforts to retain students and increase student performance, Columbus State implemented a Peer Leader program. With access to archival data on the CSU Peer Leader Program, the goal of this project was to determine if the program at CSU had a significant impact on students’ course performance. The impact of the program was assessed by performing multiple regression analyses and ANOVA. Preliminary results showed that Columbus State’s Peer Leader program had a small, but statistically significant, positive impact on students’ final course grades.

A Measure Theoretic Approach To Problems Of Number Theory With Applications To The Proof Of The Prime Number Theorem, Russell Lee Jahn Jan 2016

A Measure Theoretic Approach To Problems Of Number Theory With Applications To The Proof Of The Prime Number Theorem, Russell Lee Jahn

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

In this paper we demonstrate how the principles of measure theory can be applied effectively to problems of number theory. Initially, necessary concepts from number theory will be presented. Next, we state standard concepts and results from measure theory to which we will need to refer. We then develop our repertoire of measure theoretic machinery by constructing the needed measures and defining a generalized version of the multiplicative convolution of measures. A suitable integration by parts formula, one that is general enough to handle various combinations of measures, will then be derived. At this juncture we will be ready to …

An Ensemble Model Of Qsar Tools For Regulatory Risk Assessment, Prachi Pradeep, Richard J. Povinelli, Shannon White, Stephen Merrill Jan 2016

An Ensemble Model Of Qsar Tools For Regulatory Risk Assessment, Prachi Pradeep, Richard J. Povinelli, Shannon White, Stephen Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) are theoretical models that relate a quantitative measure of chemical structure to a physical property or a biological effect. QSAR predictions can be used for chemical risk assessment for protection of human and environmental health, which makes them interesting to regulators, especially in the absence of experimental data. For compatibility with regulatory use, QSAR models should be transparent, reproducible and optimized to minimize the number of false negatives. In silico QSAR tools are gaining wide acceptance as a faster alternative to otherwise time-consuming clinical and animal testing methods. However, different QSAR tools often make conflicting …

Solving Set Cover With Pairs Problem Using Quantum Annealing, Yudong Cao, Shuxian Jiang, Debbie Perouli, Sabre Kais Jan 2016

Solving Set Cover With Pairs Problem Using Quantum Annealing, Yudong Cao, Shuxian Jiang, Debbie Perouli, Sabre Kais

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Here we consider using quantum annealing to solve Set Cover with Pairs (SCP), an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that plays an important role in networking, computational biology, and biochemistry. We show an explicit construction of Ising Hamiltonians whose ground states encode the solution of SCP instances. We numerically simulate the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in order to test the performance of quantum annealing for random instances and compare with that of simulated annealing. We also discuss explicit embedding strategies for realizing our Hamiltonian construction on the D-wave type restricted Ising Hamiltonian based on Chimera graphs. Our embedding on the Chimera graph …

A Generalized Gamma-Weibull Distribution: Model, Properties And Applications, R. S. Meshkat, H. Torabi, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani Jan 2016

A Generalized Gamma-Weibull Distribution: Model, Properties And Applications, R. S. Meshkat, H. Torabi, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We prepare a new method to generate family of distributions. Then, a family of univariate distributions generated by the Gamma random variable is defined. The generalized gamma-Weibull (GGW) distribution is studied as a special case of this family. Certain mathematical properties of moments are provided. To estimate the model parameters, the maximum likelihood estimators and the asymptotic distribution of the estimators are discussed. Certain characterizations of GGW distribution are presented. Finally, the usefulness of the new distribution, as well as its effectiveness in comparison with other distributions, are shown via an application of a real data set.

Collective Estimation Of Multiple Bivariate Density Functions With Application To Angular-Sampling-Based Protein Loop Modeling, Mehdi Maadooliat, Lan Zhou, Seyed Morteza Najibi, Xin Gao, Jianhua Z. Huang Jan 2016

Collective Estimation Of Multiple Bivariate Density Functions With Application To Angular-Sampling-Based Protein Loop Modeling, Mehdi Maadooliat, Lan Zhou, Seyed Morteza Najibi, Xin Gao, Jianhua Z. Huang

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

This article develops a method for simultaneous estimation of density functions for a collection of populations of protein backbone angle pairs using a data-driven, shared basis that is constructed by bivariate spline functions defined on a triangulation of the bivariate domain. The circular nature of angular data is taken into account by imposing appropriate smoothness constraints across boundaries of the triangles. Maximum penalized likelihood is used to fit the model and an alternating blockwise Newton-type algorithm is developed for computation. A simulation study shows that the collective estimation approach is statistically more efficient than estimating the densities individually. The proposed …

A Hybrid Segmentation And D-Bar Method For Electrical Impedance Tomography, Sarah J. Hamilton, J. M. Reyes, Samuli Siltanen, X. Zhang Jan 2016

A Hybrid Segmentation And D-Bar Method For Electrical Impedance Tomography, Sarah J. Hamilton, J. M. Reyes, Samuli Siltanen, X. Zhang

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The regularized D-bar method for electrical impedance tomography (EIT) provides a rigorous mathematical approach for solving the full nonlinear inverse problem directly, i.e., without iterations. It is based on a low-pass filtering in the (nonlinear) frequency domain. However, the resulting D-bar reconstructions are inherently smoothed, leading to a loss of edge distinction. In this paper, a novel method that combines a D-bar approach with the edge-preserving nature of total variation (TV) regularization is presented. The method also includes a data-driven contrast adjustment technique guided by the key functions (CGO solutions) of the D-bar method. The new TV-enhanced D-bar …
