Many practical problems are naturally reduced to solving systems of equations. There are many efficient techniques for solving well-defined systems of equations, i.e., systems in which we know the exact values of all the parameters and coefficients. In practice, we usually know these parameters and coefficients with some uncertainty -- uncertainty usually described by an appropriate granule: interval, fuzzy set, rough set, etc. Many techniques have been developed for solving systems of equations under such granular uncertainty. From Tertullian's Credo Quia Absurdum To Bohr's Crazy Theories: A Rational Explanation Of A Seemingly Irrational Idea, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

At first glance, Tertullian's idea -- that absurdity of a statement makes it more believable -- sounds irrational, maybe appropriate for theology but definitely not for science. However, somewhat surprisingly, a similar idea was successfully used by the Nobelist Niels Bohr in theoretical physics -- an epitome of rationality in science. In this paper, we show that this Tertullian-Bohr idea actually has a simple rational explanation. Specifically, if previous attempts to construct a theory which is consistent with what is perceived as common sense were unsuccessful, this implies that a true theory much contradict common sense -- and thus, the …

Towards Selecting The Best Abstraction For A Patrolling Game, Anjon Basak, Chris Kiekintveld, Vladik Kreinovich

When the number of possible strategies is large, it is not computationally feasible to compute the optimal strategy for the original game. Instead, we select our strategy based on an approximate approximate description of the original game. The quality of the resulting strategy depends on which approximation we select. In this paper, on an example of a simple game, we show how to find the optimal approximation, the approximation whose use results in the best strategy.

We give a lower bound for the Waring rank and cactus rank of forms that are invariant under an action of a connected algebraic group. We use this to improve the Ranestad-Schreyer-Shafiei lower bounds for the Waring ranks and cactus ranks of determinants of generic matrices, Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, and determinants of generic symmetric matrices.

Usually, all we know is the past nesting sites, and the fact that the birds select a site which is optimal for them (in some reasonable sense), but we do not know the exact objective function describing this optimality. One way to make group decisions is to select the best decision maker(s) in the group as the authority, and to follow his or her decisions. At first glance, it seems that if the selected authority is indeed the best decision maker, it is beneficial for everyone to obey his or her authority. However, history shows that in many cases, challenges to the authority (even to the authority of the best decision maker) were beneficial to the group. How to estimate parameters from observations subject to errors and uncertainty? Very often, the measurement errors are random quantities that can be adequately described by the probability theory. When we know that the measurement errors are normally distributed with zero mean, then the (asymptotically optimal) Maximum Likelihood Method leads to the popular least squares estimates. In many situations, however, we do not know the shape of the error distribution, we only know that the measurement errors are located on a certain interval. Numerous diseases can occur when swimming or fishing in contaminated water. It is important that the quality of water is being monitored prior to recreational activities. To model the quality of the water at any given time with available predictors, data from bodies of water across New Jersey from 1999 to 2013 was collected from the database STORET. The water quality parameters studied were Escherichia coli (E. coli) and enterococcus with the predictors as Dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, Salinity, Temperature, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS). I investigate the divisibility properties of generalized Catalan numbers by ex-

tending known results for ordinary Catalan numbers to their general case. First, I define the general Catalan numbers and provide a new derivation of a known formula. Second, I show several combinatorial representations of generalized Catalan numbers and survey bijections across these representation. Third, I extend several divisibility results proved by Koshy. Finally, I prove conditions under which sufficiently large primes form blocks of divisibility and indivisibility of the generalized Catalan numbers, extending a known result by Alter and Kubota.

This dissertation develops a minimum description length (MDL) multiple changepoint detection procedure that allows for prior distributions. MDL methods, which are penalized likelihood techniques with penalties based on data description-length information principles, have been successfully applied to many recent multiple changepoint problems. This work shows ow to modify the MDL penalty to account for various prior knowledge. Our motivation lies in climatology. Here, a metadata record, which is a file listing times when a recording station physically moved, instrumentation was changed, etc., sometimes exists. In this paper, we propose a generalization of classical coKähler geometry from the point of view of generalized contact metric geometry. This allows us to generalize a theorem of Capursi (1984), Goldberg (1968) and show that the product M1×M2M1×M2 of generalized contact metric manifolds (Mi,Φi,E±,i,Gi)(Mi,Φi,E±,i,Gi), i=1,2i=1,2, where M1×M2M1×M2 is endowed with the product (twisted) generalized complex structure induced from Φ1Φ1 and Φ2Φ2, is (twisted) generalized Kähler if and only if View the MathML source(Mi,Φi,E±,i,Gi),i=1,2 are (twisted) generalized coKähler structures. Small-world networks occur naturally throughout biological, technological, and social systems. With their prevalence, it is particularly important to prudently identify small-world networks and further characterize their unique connection structure with respect to network function. In this work we develop a formalism for classifying networks and identifying small-world structure using a decomposition of network connectivity matrices into low-rank and sparse components, corresponding to connections within clusters of highly connected nodes and sparse interconnections between clusters, respectively. Motivated by recent work in the mathematics and engineering literature, we study integrability and non-tangential regularity on the two-torus for rational functions that are holomorphic on the bidisk. One way to study such rational functions is to fix the denominator and look at the ideal of polynomials in the numerator such that the rational function is square integrable. A concrete list of generators is given for this ideal as well as a precise count of the dimension of the subspace of numerators with a specified bound on bidegree. We give necessary and sufficient conditions to solve an interpolation problem for free holomorphic functions bounded in norm on a free polynomial polyhedron. As an application, we prove that every bounded holomorphic function on a polynomial polyhedron extends to a bounded free function.

In this article we consider a non-standard finite difference method for numerical solution of linear Fredholm integro-differential equations. The non-standard finite difference method and the repeated / composite trapezoidal quadrature method are used to transform the Fredholm integro-differential equation into a system of non-linear algebraic equations. The numerical experiments on some linear model problems show the simplicity and efficiency of the proposed method. It is observed from the numerical experiments that our method is convergent and second order accurate.

We introduce a method for aggregation of experts’ opinions given in the form of comparative linguistic expression. An algorithmic form of technique for order preference is proposed for group decision making. A simple example is given by using this method for the selection of the best alternative as well as ranking the alternatives from the best to the worst.
