Continuous Maximal Regularity And Analytic Semigroups, Jeremy Lecrone, Gieri Simonett Sep 2011

Continuous Maximal Regularity And Analytic Semigroups, Jeremy Lecrone, Gieri Simonett

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we establish a result regarding the connection between continuous maximal regularity and generation of analytic semigroups on a pair of densely embedded Banach spaces. More precisely, we show that continuous maximal regularity for a closed operator A : E1 → E0 implies that A generates a strongly continuous analytic semigroup on E0 with domain equal E1.

The Effects Of 24 Weeks Of Resistance Training With Simultaneous Elastic And Free Weight Loading On Muscular Performance Of Novice Lifters, Robert Rovetti Sep 2011

The Effects Of 24 Weeks Of Resistance Training With Simultaneous Elastic And Free Weight Loading On Muscular Performance Of Novice Lifters, Robert Rovetti

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effectiveness of variable resistance as provided through elastic plus free weight techniques in college aged males and females. Twenty novice lifters were randomly assigned to a traditional free weight only (6 males and 5 females) or elastic band plus free weight group (5 males and 5 females) and 9 more normally active controls (5 males and 4 females), were recruited to maintain normal activity for the duration of the study. No differences existed between control, free weight and elastic band at baseline for age, body height, body mass, body mass index, …

The Eigenvalues Of A Tridiagonal Matrix In Biogeography, Boris Igelnik, Daniel J. Simon Sep 2011

The Eigenvalues Of A Tridiagonal Matrix In Biogeography, Boris Igelnik, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We derive the eigenvalues of a tridiagonal matrix with a special structure. A conjecture about the eigenvalues was presented in a previous paper, and here we prove the conjecture. The matrix structure that we consider has applications in biogeography theory.

Multiplicative Noise For Masking Numerical Microdata Data With Constraints, Anna Oganian Sep 2011

Multiplicative Noise For Masking Numerical Microdata Data With Constraints, Anna Oganian

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Before releasing databases which contain sensitive information about individuals, statistical agencies have to apply Statistical Disclosure Limitation (SDL) methods to such data. The goal of these methods is to minimize the risk of disclosure of the confidential information and at the same time provide legitimate data users with accurate information about the population of interest. SDL methods applicable to the microdata (i. e. collection of individual records) are often called masking methods. In this paper, several multiplicative noise masking schemes are presented. These schemes are designed to preserve positivity and inequality constraints in the data together with the vector of …

Pólya’S Theorem With Zeros, Mari Castle, Victoria Powers, Bruce Reznick Sep 2011

Pólya’S Theorem With Zeros, Mari Castle, Victoria Powers, Bruce Reznick

Faculty Articles

Let be the real polynomial ring in variables. Pólya’s Theorem says that if a homogeneous polynomial is positive on the standard -simplex , then for sufficiently large all the coefficients of are positive. We give a complete characterization of forms, possibly with zeros on , for which there exists so that all coefficients of have only nonnegative coefficients, along with a bound on the needed.

The Effects Of Periodic And Non-Periodic Inputs On The Dynamics Of A Medial Entorhinal Cortex Layer Ii Stellate Cell Model, Dongwook Kim Aug 2011

The Effects Of Periodic And Non-Periodic Inputs On The Dynamics Of A Medial Entorhinal Cortex Layer Ii Stellate Cell Model, Dongwook Kim

Dissertations

Various neuron types exhibit sub-threshold and firing frequency resonance in which the sub-threshold membrane potential or firing frequency responses to periodic inputs peak at a preferred frequency (or frequencies). Previous experimental work has shown that medial entorhinal cortex layer II stellate cells (SCs) exhibit sub-threshold and firing frequency resonance in the theta frequency band (4 - 10 Hz). In this thesis we seek to understand the biophysical and dynamic mechanism underlying these phenomena and how they are related. We studied the effects of sinusoidal current and synaptic conductance inputs at various frequencies, with and without noise, on the supra-threshold dynamics …

Energy Propagation In Jammed Granular Matter, Xiaoni Fang Aug 2011

Energy Propagation In Jammed Granular Matter, Xiaoni Fang

Dissertations

The systems built from dense granular materials are very important due to their relevance to a number of technological and other fields. However, they are difficult to study in particular due to a lack of accurate continuum description. In this work, studies on these systems are presented using discrete element simulations that model the granular particles as soft, elastic, and frictional disks which interact when in contact. These simulations are used for the purpose of analyzing a few granular systems with the main emphasis on understanding phenomena of energy and force propagation.

Analysis of energy propagation in a two-dimensional disordered …

Equidistribution Results For Singular Metrics On Line Bundles, Dan Coman, George Marinescu Aug 2011

Equidistribution Results For Singular Metrics On Line Bundles, Dan Coman, George Marinescu

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Let L be a holomorphic line bundle with a positively curved singular Hermitian metric over a complex manifold X. One can define naturally the sequence of Fubini-Study currents associated to the space of square integrable holomorphic sections of the p-th tensor powers of L. Assuming that the singular set of the metric is contained in a compact analytic subset of X and that the logarithm of the Bergman kernel function associated to the p-th tensor power of L (defined outside the singular set) grows like o(p) as p tends to infinity, we prove the following:
1) the k-th power of …

Non-Commutative Crepant Resolutions: Scenes From Categorical Geometry, Graham J. Leuschke Aug 2011

Non-Commutative Crepant Resolutions: Scenes From Categorical Geometry, Graham J. Leuschke

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Non-commutative crepant resolutions are algebraic objects defined by Van den Bergh to realize an equivalence of derived categories in birational geometry. They are motivated by tilting theory, the McKay correspondence, and the minimal model program, and have applications to string theory and representation theory. In this expository article I situate Van den Bergh's definition within these contexts and describe some of the current research in the area.

Isomorph-Free Generation Of 2-Connected Graphs With Applications, Derrick Stolee Aug 2011

Isomorph-Free Generation Of 2-Connected Graphs With Applications, Derrick Stolee

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Many interesting graph families contain only 2-connected graphs, which have ear decompositions. We develop a technique to generate families of unlabeled 2-connected graphs using ear augmentations and apply this technique to two problems. In the first application, we search for uniquely Kr-saturated graphs and find the list of uniquely K4-saturated graphs on at most 12 vertices, supporting current conjectures for this problem. In the second application, we verify the Edge Reconstruction Conjecture for all 2-connected graphs on at most 12 vertices. This technique can be easily extended to more problems concerning 2-connected graphs.
