Statistical Reanalysis Of Jewish Priests’ And Non-Priests’ Haplotypes Using Exact Methods, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky Jun 2011

Statistical Reanalysis Of Jewish Priests’ And Non-Priests’ Haplotypes Using Exact Methods, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

Researchers in an article appearing in Nature used asymptotic (i.e., large sample) chi-square tests in analyzing haplotypes of Y chromosomes using the polymerase chain reaction applied to genomic DNA from male Israeli, North American, and British Jews. The use of classical methods for analyzing extremely sparse contingency tables is frequently done, but with the advent of statistical software capable of conducting exact tests, researchers should certainly cease relying on outdated methods for small sample analyses. A reanalysis was conducted using modern statistical methods. Results and implications for using exact tests are discussed.

Constraint Qualifications And Optimality Conditions For Nonconvex Semi-Infinite And Infinite Programs, Boris S. Mordukhovich, T T. A. Nghia Jun 2011

Constraint Qualifications And Optimality Conditions For Nonconvex Semi-Infinite And Infinite Programs, Boris S. Mordukhovich, T T. A. Nghia

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns the study of new classes of nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problems of the so-called infinite programming that are generally defined on infinite-dimensional spaces of decision variables and contain infinitely many of equality and inequality constraints with arbitrary (may not be compact) index sets. These problems reduce to semi-infinite programs in the case of finite-dimensional spaces of decision variables. We extend the classical Mangasarian-Fromovitz and Farkas-Minkowski constraint qualifications to such infinite and semi-infinite programs. The new qualification conditions are used for efficient computing the appropriate normal cones to sets of feasible solutions for these programs by employing advanced …

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Developing effective management strategies is essential to conservation biology. Population models and sensitivity analyses on model parameters have provided a means to quantitatively compare different management strategies, allowing managers to objectively assess the resulting impacts. Inference from traditional sensitivity analyses (i.e., eigenvalue sensitivity methods) is only valid for a population at its stable age distribution, while more recent methods have relaxed this assumption and instead focused on transient population dynamics. However, very few case studies, especially in long-lived vertebrates where transient dynamics are potentially most relevant, have applied these transient sensitivity methods and compared them to eigenvalue sensitivity methods. We …

Stability And Change In Self-Reported Sexual Orientation Identity In Young People: Application Of Mobility Metrics, Miles Q. Ott, Heather L. Corliss, David Wypij, Margaret Rosario, S. Bryn Austin

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

This study investigated stability and change in self-reported sexual orientation identity over time in youth. We describe gender- and age-related changes in sexual orientation identity from early adolescence through emerging adulthood in 13,840 youth ages 12–25 employing mobility measure M, a measure we modified from its original application for econometrics. Using prospective data from a large, ongoing cohort of U.S. adolescents, we examined mobility in sexual orientation identity in youth with up to four waves of data. Ten percent of males and 20% of females at some point described themselves as a sexual minority, while 2% of both males and …

Shooting Neural Networks Algorithm For Solving Boundary Value Problems In Odes, Kais I. Ibraheem, Bashir M. Khalaf

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The objective of this paper is to use Neural Networks for solving boundary value problems (BVPs) in Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). The Neural networks use the principle of Back propagation. Five examples are considered to show effectiveness of using the shooting techniques and neural network for solving the BVPs in ODEs. The convergence properties of the technique, which depend on the convergence of the integration technique and accuracy of the interpolation technique are considered.

Exact Travelling Wave Solutions Of The Coupled Klein-Gordon Equation By The Infinite Series Method, Nasir Taghizadeh, Mohammad Mirzazadeh, Foroozan Farahrooz

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we employ the infinite series method for travelling wave solutions of the coupled Klein-Gordon equations. Based on the idea of the infinite series method, a simple and efficient method is proposed for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. The solutions obtained include solitons and periodic solutions.

Symmetric Factorization Of The Conformation Tensor In Viscoelastic Fluid Models, Nusret Balci, Becca Thomases, Michael Renardy, Charles R. Doering Jun 2011

Symmetric Factorization Of The Conformation Tensor In Viscoelastic Fluid Models, Nusret Balci, Becca Thomases, Michael Renardy, Charles R. Doering

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

The positive-definite symmetric polymer conformation tensor possesses a unique symmetric square root that satisfies a closed evolution equation in the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P models of viscoelastic fluid flow. When expressed in terms of the velocity field and the symmetric square root of the conformation tensor, these models' equations of motion formally constitute an evolution in a Hilbert space with a total energy functional that defines a norm. Moreover, this formulation is easily implemented in direct numerical simulations resulting in significant practical advantages in terms of both accuracy and stability.

Interactions And Focusing Of Nonlinear Water Waves, Harihar Khanal, S.C. Mancas, Shahrdad Sajjadi Jun 2011

Interactions And Focusing Of Nonlinear Water Waves, Harihar Khanal, S.C. Mancas, Shahrdad Sajjadi

Publications

A theoretical and computational study is undertaken for the modulational instabilities of a pair of nonlinearly interacting two-dimensional waves in deep water. It has been shown that the full dynamics of these interacting waves gives rise to localized large-amplitude wavepackets (wave focusing). The coupled cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations are used to derive a nonlinear dispersion equation which give rise to new class of modulational instabilities and demonstrates the dependence of obliqueness of the interacting waves. The computations, due to nonlinear wave-wave interactions, waves that are separately modulationally stable can give rise to the formation of large-amplitude coherent wave packets …

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache Jun 2011

A Group-Permutation Algorithm To Solve The Generalized Sudoku, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Sudoku can be generalized to squares whose dimensions are n^2 × n^2 , where n ≥ 2, using various symbols (numbers, letters, mathematical symbols, etc.), written just one time on each row and on each column; and the large square is divided into n 2 small squares with the side n × n and each will contain all n 2 symbols written only once. In this paper we present an elementary solution for the generalized sudoku based on a group-permutation algorithm.

Confidence Bands For Survival Functions Under Semiparametric Random Censorship Models, Peixin Zhang May 2011

Confidence Bands For Survival Functions Under Semiparametric Random Censorship Models, Peixin Zhang

Dissertations

In medical reports point estimates and pointwise confidence intervals of parameters are usually displayed. When the parameter is a survival function, however, the approach of joining the upper end points of individual interval estimates obtained at several points and likewise for the lower end points would not produce bands that include the entire survival curve with a given confidence. Simultaneous confidence bands, which allow confidence statements to be valid for the entire survival curve, would be more meaningful

This dissertation focuses on a novel method of developing one-sample confidence bands for survival functions from right censored data. The approach is model- …

High-Order Adaptive Methods For Computing Invariant Manifolds Of Maps, Jacek K. Wrobel May 2011

High-Order Adaptive Methods For Computing Invariant Manifolds Of Maps, Jacek K. Wrobel

Dissertations

The author presents efficient and accurate numerical methods for computing invariant manifolds of maps which arise in the study of dynamical systems. In order to decrease the number of points needed to compute a given curve/surface, he proposes using higher-order interpolation/approximation techniques from geometric modeling. He uses B´ezier curves/triangles, fundamental objects in curve/surface design, to create adaptive methods. The methods are based on tolerance conditions derived from properties of B´ezier curves/triangles. The author develops and tests the methods for an ordinary parametric curve; then he adapts these methods to invariant manifolds of planar maps. Next, he develops and tests the …

Markovian And Stochastic Differential Equation Based Approaches To Computer Virus Propagation Dynamics And Some Models For Survival Distributions, Lianzhe Xu May 2011

Markovian And Stochastic Differential Equation Based Approaches To Computer Virus Propagation Dynamics And Some Models For Survival Distributions, Lianzhe Xu

Dissertations

This dissertation is divided in two Parts. The first Part explores probabilistic modeling of propagation of computer 'malware' (generally referred to as 'virus') across a network of computers, and investigates modeling improvements achieved by introducing a random latency period during which an infected computer in the network is unable to infect others. In the second Part, two approaches for modeling life distributions in univariate and bivariate setups are developed.

In Part I, homogeneous and non-homogeneous stochastic susceptible-exposed-infectious- recovered (SEIR) models are specifically explored for the propagation of computer virus over the Internet by borrowing ideas from mathematical epidemiology. Large computer …

Sequential Bayesian Filtering For Spatial Arrival Time Estimation, Rashi Jain May 2011

Sequential Bayesian Filtering For Spatial Arrival Time Estimation, Rashi Jain

Dissertations

Locating and tracking a source in an ocean environment as well as estimating environmental parameters of a sound propagation medium is of utmost importance in underwater acoustics. Matched field processing is often the method of choice for the estimation of such parameters. This approach, based on full field calculations, is computationally intensive and sensitive to assumptions on the structure of the environment. As an alternative, methods that use only select features of the acoustic field for source localization and environmental inversion have been proposed. The focus here is on inversion using arrival times of identified paths within recorded time-series. After …

Uniform Heating Of Thin Ceramic Slabs In A Multimode Microwave Cavity, Shuchi Agrawal May 2011

Uniform Heating Of Thin Ceramic Slabs In A Multimode Microwave Cavity, Shuchi Agrawal

Dissertations

Two-dimensional reaction diffusion equations, which contain a functional and an inhomogeneous source term, are good models for describing microwave heating of thin ceramic slabs and cylinders in a multi mode, highly resonant cavity. A thin ceramic slab situated in a TEN03 rectangular cavity modeled in the small Biot number limit and a thin silicon wafer situated in a TM101 cylindrical cavity modeled in the small fineness ratio limit are studied to gain insight into the dynamics of the heating process. The evolution of temperature is governed by a two-dimensional reaction diffusion equation and a spatially non-homogeneous reaction term. Numerical methods …

Asymptotic And Numerical Analysis Of Time-Dependent Wave Propagation In Dispersive Dielectric Media That Exhibit Fractional Relaxation, Matthew Frank Causley May 2011

Asymptotic And Numerical Analysis Of Time-Dependent Wave Propagation In Dispersive Dielectric Media That Exhibit Fractional Relaxation, Matthew Frank Causley

Dissertations

This dissertation addresses electromagnetic pulse propagation through anomalously dispersive dielectric media. The Havriliak-Negami (H-N) and Cole-Cole (C-C) models capture the non-exponential nature of such dielectric relaxation phenomena, which is manifest in a variety of dispersive dielectric media. In the C-C model, the dielectric polarization is coupled to the time-dependent Maxwell's equations by a fractional differential equation involving the electric field. In the H-N case, a more general pseudo-fractional differential operator describes the polarization.

The development and analysis of a robust method for implementing such models is presented, with an emphasis on algorithmic efficiency. Separate numerical schemes are presented for C-C …

Numerical And Asymptotic Modeling Of Evolving Nonlinear Ocean Surface Wave Fields, Matt Malej May 2011

Numerical And Asymptotic Modeling Of Evolving Nonlinear Ocean Surface Wave Fields, Matt Malej

Dissertations

The main focus of this dissertation is the asymptotic and numerical modeling of nonlinear ocean surface wave fields. In particular, a development of an accurate numerical model for the evolution of nonlinear ocean waves, including extreme waves known as Rogue/Freak waves. Due to their elusive and destructive nature, the media often portrays Rogue waves as unimaginatively huge and unpredictable monsters of the sea. To address these concerns, derivations of asymptotically reduced models, based on the small wave steepness assumption, are presented and their corresponding numerical simulations via a Fourier pseudo-spectral method are discussed. The simulations are initialized with a well-known …

The Weak Cayley Table And The Relative Weak Cayley Table, Melissa Anne Mitchell May 2011

The Weak Cayley Table And The Relative Weak Cayley Table, Melissa Anne Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

In 1896, Frobenius began the study of character theory while factoring the group determinant. Later in 1963, Brauer pointed out that the relationship between characters and their groups was still not fully understood. He published a series of questions that he felt would be important to resolve. In response to these questions, Johnson, Mattarei, and Sehgal developed the idea of a weak Cayley table map between groups. The set of all weak Cayley table maps from one group to itself also has a group structure, which we will call the weak Cayley table group. We will examine the weak Cayley …

Some Contributions To Modeling Usage Sensitive Warranty Servicing Strategies And Their Analyses, Rudrani Banerjee May 2011

Some Contributions To Modeling Usage Sensitive Warranty Servicing Strategies And Their Analyses, Rudrani Banerjee

Dissertations

Providing a warranty as a part of a product's sale is a common practice in industry. Parameters of such warranties (e.g., its duration limits, intensity of use) must be carefully specified to ensure their financial viability. A great deal of effort has been accordingly devoted in attempts to reduce the costs of warranties via appropriately designed strategies to service them. many such strategies, that aim to reduce the total expected costs of the warrantor or / and are appealing in other ways such as being more pragmatic to implement - have been suggested in the literature. Design, analysis and optimization …

Using Feed-Forward Networks To Infer The Activity Of Feedback Neuronal Networks, Xinxian Huang May 2011

Using Feed-Forward Networks To Infer The Activity Of Feedback Neuronal Networks, Xinxian Huang

Dissertations

The nervous system is one of the most important organ systems in a multicellular body. Animals, including human beings perceive, learn, think and deliver motion instructions through their nervous system. The basic structural units of the nervous system are individual neurons which constitute different neuronal networks with distinct functions. In each network, constituent neurons are coupled with different connection patterns, for example, some neurons send feed-forward information to the coupling neurons while others are mutually coupled. Because it is often difficult to analyze large interconnected feedback neuronal networks, it is important to derive techniques to reduce the complexity of the …

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: The true causes of the obesity epidemic are not well understood and there are few longitudinal population-based data published examining this issue. The objective of this analysis was to examine trends in occupational physical activity during the past 5 decades and explore how these trends relate to concurrent changes in body weight in the U.S.

Methodology/Principal Findings: Analysis of energy expenditure for occupations in U.S. private industry since 1960 using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mean body weight was derived from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). In the early 1960's almost half …

Boundary Quasi-Orthogonality And Sharp Inclusion Bounds For Large Dirichlet Eigenvalues, A. H. Barnett, A. Hassell May 2011

Boundary Quasi-Orthogonality And Sharp Inclusion Bounds For Large Dirichlet Eigenvalues, A. H. Barnett, A. Hassell

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study eigenfunctions $\phi_j$ and eigenvalues $E_j$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with piecewise smooth boundary. We bound the distance between an arbitrary parameter $E>0$ and the spectrum $\{E_j\}$ in terms of the boundary $L^2$-norm of a normalized trial solution u of the Helmholtz equation $(\Delta+E)u=0$. We also bound the $L^2$-norm of the error of this trial solution from an eigenfunction. Both of these results are sharp up to constants, hold for all E greater than a small constant, and improve upon the best-known bounds of Moler–Payne by a factor of the wavenumber $\sqrt{E}$. One …

Noncomputable Functions In The Blub-Shub-Smale Model, Wesley Calvert, Ken Kramer, Russell Miller May 2011

Noncomputable Functions In The Blub-Shub-Smale Model, Wesley Calvert, Ken Kramer, Russell Miller

Publications and Research

Working in the Blum-Shub-Smale model of computation on the real numbers, we answer several questions of Meer and Ziegler. First, we show that, for each natural number d, an oracle for the set of algebraic real numbers of degree at most d is insufficient to allow an oracle BSS-machine to decide membership in the set of algebraic numbers of degree d + 1. We add a number of further results on relative computability of these sets and their unions. Then we show that the halting problem for BSS-computation is not decidable below any countable oracle set, and give a more …

Geometric Invariants For A Class Of Semi-Fredholm Hilbert Modules., Shibananda Biswas Dr. May 2011

Geometric Invariants For A Class Of Semi-Fredholm Hilbert Modules., Shibananda Biswas Dr.

Doctoral Theses

One of the basic problem in the study of a Hilbert module H over the ring of polynomials C[z] := C[z1, . . . , zm] is to find unitary invariants (cf. [15,7]) for H. It is not always possible to find invariants that are complete and yet easy to compute. There are very few instances where a set of complete invariants have been identified. Examples are Hilbert modules over continuous functions (spectral theory of normal operator), contractive modules over the disc algebra (model theory for contractive operator) and Hilbert modules in the class Bn for a bounded domain C …

Linear Algebra, Lawrence Stout May 2011

Linear Algebra, Lawrence Stout

Scholarship

This book is designed to deal with all of the concepts of linear algebra first in R2, a simple context where algorithmic concerns are minimized and geometric intuition can be brought to bear. Then those same concepts are dealt with in full generality. I find that this conceptual front loading helps in the understanding of the rest of the material. Students can see easily what aspects of the plane are focused on when we think of it as a vector space; linear transformations can be understood as deformations of the plane of a very special type. Nothing more complicated than …
