The Maximum Of The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Numbers Of D-Regular Graphs Of Order N, Matthew Alpert, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth
The Maximum Of The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Numbers Of D-Regular Graphs Of Order N, Matthew Alpert, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth
Publications and Research
We extend known results regarding the maximum rectilinear crossing number of the cycle graph (Cn) and the complete graph (Kn ) to the class of general d-regular graphs Rn,d. We present the generalized star drawings of the d-regular graphs Sn,d of order n where n + d ≡ 1 (mod 2) and prove that they maximize the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers. A star-like drawing of Sn,d for n ≡ d ≡ 0 (mod 2) is introduced and we conjecture that this drawing maximizes the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers, too. We offer a simpler proof of two results initially proved by …
Examples Of Hyperbolic Knots With Distance 3 Toroidal Surgeries In The 3-Sphere, Cesar Garza
Examples Of Hyperbolic Knots With Distance 3 Toroidal Surgeries In The 3-Sphere, Cesar Garza
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
By the work of Thurston, any surgery on a hyperbolic knot in the 3-sphere produces a hyperbolic 3-manifold except in at most finitely many cases. So far, the figure-8 knot seems to be the best candidate for a hyperbolic knot with the most (8) non-trivial exceptional surgeries. In recent years, much progress has been made in the classification of hyperbolic knots admitting more than one exceptional toroidal surgery. In fact, such classification is known for toroidal surgeries with distance at least 4.
We give a classification of hyperbolic knots in $S^3$ admitting two toroidal surgeries at distance 3, whose slopes …
Generalized First-Order Nonlinear Evolution Equations And Generalized Yosida Approximations Based On H-Maximal Monotonicity Frameworks, Ram U. Verma
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
First a general framework for the Yosida approximation is introduced based on the relative H-maximal monotonicity model, and then it is applied to the solvability of a general class of first-order nonlinear evolution equations. The obtained results generalize and unify a wide range of results to the context of the solvability of first-order nonlinear evolution equations in several settings.© 2009 Texas State University-San Marcos.

Maintenance In Single-Server Queues: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Najeeb Al-Matar, Jewgeni H. Dshalalow
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
We use antagonistic stochastic games and fluctuation analysis to examine a single-server queue with bulk input and secondary work during server's multiple vacations. When the buffer contents become exhausted the server leaves the system to perform some diagnostic service of a minimum of jobs clustered in packets of random sizes (event A). The server is not supposed to stay longer than units of time (event B). The server returns to the system when A or B occurs, whichever comes first. On the other hand, he may not break service of a packet in a middle even if A or B …

Advanced Discrete Halanay-Type Inequalities: Stability Of Difference Equations, Ravi P. Agarwal, Youngho Kim, Syamal K. Sen
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
We derive new nonlinear discrete analogue of the continuous Halanay-type inequality. These inequalities can be used as basic tools in the study of the global asymptotic stability of the equilibrium of certain generalized difference equations.
Equational Coalgebraic Logic, Alexander Kurz, Raul Leal
Equational Coalgebraic Logic, Alexander Kurz, Raul Leal
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Coalgebra develops a general theory of transition systems, parametric in a functor T; the functor T specifies the possible one-step behaviours of the system. A fundamental question in this area is how to obtain, for an arbitrary functor T, a logic for T-coalgebras. We compare two existing proposals, Moss’s coalgebraic logic and the logic of all predicate liftings, by providing one-step translations between them, extending the results in [21] by making systematic use of Stone duality. Our main contribution then is a novel coalgebraic logic, which can be seen as an equational axiomatization of Moss’s logic. The three logics are …
Hopf Quivers And Nichols Algebras In Positive Characteristic, Claude Cibils, Aaron Lauve, Sarah Witherspoon
Hopf Quivers And Nichols Algebras In Positive Characteristic, Claude Cibils, Aaron Lauve, Sarah Witherspoon
Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We apply a combinatorial formula of the first author and Rosso, for products in Hopf quiver algebras, to determine the structure of Nichols algebras. We illustrate this technique by explicitly constructing new examples of Nichols algebras in positive characteristic. We further describe the corresponding Radford biproducts and some liftings of these biproducts, which are new finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras.
Convergence And The Lebesgue Integral, Ryan Vail Thomas
Convergence And The Lebesgue Integral, Ryan Vail Thomas
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In this paper, we examine the theory of integration of functions of real variables. Background information in measure theory and convergence is provided and several examples are considered. We compare Riemann and Lebesgue integration and develop several important theorems. In particular, the Monotone Convergence Theorem and Dominated Convergence Theorem are considered under both pointwise convergence and convergence in measure.
The Kalman Filter On Time Scales, Nicholas J. Wintz
The Kalman Filter On Time Scales, Nicholas J. Wintz
Doctoral Dissertations
"In this work, we study concepts in optimal control for dynamic equations on time scales, which unfies the discrete and continuous cases. After a brief introduction of dynamic equations on time scales, we will examine controllability and observability for linear systems. Then we construct and solve the linear quadratic regulator for arbitrary time scales. Here, we seek to find an optimal control that minimizes a given cost function associated with a linear system. We will find such an input under two different settings; when the final state is fixed and when it is free. Later, we extend these results to …
The Effects Of Block Scheduling On Ap Calculus Ab Student Achievement, Larry A. Lightner
The Effects Of Block Scheduling On Ap Calculus Ab Student Achievement, Larry A. Lightner
Mathematics Graduate Theses
Student achievement on the AP Calculus AB Exam is always a concern for teachers and school districts that offer the exam. A factor of concern that also arises is a school’s schedule. A school’s schedule may have an affect on achievement. This study examines the comparison in achievement of students who take the AP Calculus AB Exam under a block schedule and a traditional schedule system. Block Scheduling is defined as a class period of 80-90 minutes with 4 periods each day, allowing a full year’s curriculum to be offered in one semester. Traditional scheduling is defined as a class …
Cooperative Learning In The Mathematics Classroom, Janine Regnier
Cooperative Learning In The Mathematics Classroom, Janine Regnier
Mathematics Graduate Theses
Student interactions are important which provokes the idea that cooperative learning should be incorporated into classrooms. Research states many benefits for incorporating cooperative learning and are included in the literature review. Cooperative groups were introduced and studied by the author, who ultimately concluded that cooperative learning does have a place in Mathematics classrooms and should be used when the lesson lends itself to a cooperative environment. The study results can be found in this paper following the literature review.
To What Degree Will Differentiated Instruction Impact Student Grades In A Middle School Classroom?, Maureen K. Wilke
To What Degree Will Differentiated Instruction Impact Student Grades In A Middle School Classroom?, Maureen K. Wilke
Mathematics Graduate Theses
The middle school student population encompasses one of the widest ranges of diversity in the educational system. Besides cultural, religious, educational, economical diversity, the middle school student copes with physical and psychological changes as well. It is important to understand that reaching students successfully is not teaching one way, but providing a learning experience based on students’ needs. The five key differentiated strategies in the classroom are: knowing the student, the environment, meaningful lessons, tiered assignments, and assessment. Gather as much information on the students, such as data from past standardize tests, conversation with students, student journals about success and …
Testing The Fixed Effects Restrictions? A Monte Carlo Study Of Chamberlain's Minimum Chi-Squared Test, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte
Testing The Fixed Effects Restrictions? A Monte Carlo Study Of Chamberlain's Minimum Chi-Squared Test, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte
Center for Policy Research
Chamberlain (1982) showed that the fixed effects (FE) specification imposes testable restrictions on the coefficients from regressions of all leads and lags of dependent variables on all leads and lags of independent variables. Angrist and Newey (1991) suggested computing this test statistic as the degrees of freedom times the R2 from a regression of within residuals on all leads and lags of the exogenous variables. Despite the simplicity of these tests, they are not commonly used in practice. Instead, a Hausman (1978) test is used based on a contrast of the fixed and random effects specifications. We advocate the use …
Existence Of Infinitely Many Distinct Solutions To The Quasi-Relativistic Hartree-Fock Equations, Mattias Enstedt, Michael Melgaard
Existence Of Infinitely Many Distinct Solutions To The Quasi-Relativistic Hartree-Fock Equations, Mattias Enstedt, Michael Melgaard
Articles
We establish existence of infinitely many distinct solutions to the semilinear elliptic Hartree-Fock equations for N-electron Coulomb systems with quasirelativistic kinetic energy −α−2Δxn α−4 − α−2 for the nth electron. Moreover, we prove existence of a ground state. The results are valid under the hypotheses that the total charge Ztot of K nuclei is greater than N − 1 and that Ztot is smaller than a critical charge Zc. The proofs are based on a new application of the Fang-Ghoussoub critical point approach to multiple solutions on a noncompact Riemannian manifold, in combination with density operator techniques.

On Modules Which Are Self-Slender, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith, O. Kolman
On Modules Which Are Self-Slender, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith, O. Kolman
Articles
This paper is an examination of the dual of the fundamental isomorphism relating homomorphism groups involving direct sums and direct products over arbitrary index sets. Recall that a module G is said to be self-slender if every homomorphism from a countable product of copies of G into G, vanishes on all but finitely many of the components of the product. Modules of this type are investigated. The simplest version of the results obtained is that under weak cardinality restrictions, there exist non-slender but self-slender Abelian groups.
Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves: The Constant Vorticity Case, Rossen Ivanov
Two Component Integrable Systems Modelling Shallow Water Waves: The Constant Vorticity Case, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
In this contribution we describe the role of several two-component integrable systems in the classical problem of shallow water waves. The starting point in our derivation is the Euler equation for an incompressible fluid, the equation of mass conservation, the simplest bottom and surface conditions and the constant vorticity condition. The approximate model equations are generated by introduction of suitable scalings and by truncating asymptotic expansions of the quantities to appropriate order. The so obtained equations can be related to three different integrable systems: a two component generalization of the Camassa-Holm equation, the Zakharov-Ito system and the Kaup-Boussinesq system. The …
1-D Schrödinger Operators With Local Point Interactions On A Discrete Set, Aleksey Kostenko, Mark M. Malamud
1-D Schrödinger Operators With Local Point Interactions On A Discrete Set, Aleksey Kostenko, Mark M. Malamud
Articles
Spectral properties of 1-D Schrödinger operators HX,α := − d2 dx2 + xn∈X αnδ(x − xn) with local point interactions on a discrete set X = {xn}∞ n=1 are well studied when d∗ := infn,k∈N |xn − xk| > 0. Our paper is devoted to the case d∗ = 0. We consider HX,α in the framework of extension theory of symmetric operators by applying the technique of boundary triplets and the corresponding Weyl functions.
A Compartmentalized Approach To The Assembly Of Physical Maps, Serdar Bozdag, Timothy J. Close, Stefano Lonardi
A Compartmentalized Approach To The Assembly Of Physical Maps, Serdar Bozdag, Timothy J. Close, Stefano Lonardi
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Background: Physical maps have been historically one of the cornerstones of genome sequencing and map-based cloning strategies. They also support marker assisted breeding and EST mapping. The problem of building a high quality physical map is computationally challenging due to unavoidable noise in the input fingerprint data. Results: We propose a novel compartmentalized method for the assembly of high quality physical maps from fingerprinted clones. The knowledge of genetic markers enables us to group clones into clusters so that clones in the same cluster are more likely to overlap. For each cluster of clones, a local physical map is first …

Skittles Chocolate Mix Color Distribution: A Chi-Square Experience, David R. Duncan, Bonnie H. Litwiller
Skittles Chocolate Mix Color Distribution: A Chi-Square Experience, David R. Duncan, Bonnie H. Litwiller
Faculty Work
In teaching statistical processes, it is important that there be application to realworld settings and activities. When this is done, students are more likely to see the meaning of the steps being developed.
One such activity involves using the Chi-Square statistical test and its applications to counting Skittles Chocolate Mix candies. Many students are aware that these candies come in five different flavors: Brownie Batter (BB), Vanilla (V), Chocolate Caramel (CC), S’mores (S), and Chocolate Pudding (CP).

Lebesgue-Stieltjes Measure On Time Scales, Asli Deni̇z, Ünal Ufuktepe
Lebesgue-Stieltjes Measure On Time Scales, Asli Deni̇z, Ünal Ufuktepe
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The theory of time scales was introduced by Stefan Hilger in his Ph. D. thesis in 1988, supervised by Bernd Auldbach, in order to unify continuous and discrete analysis [5]. Measure theory on time scales was first constructed by Guseinov [4], then further studies were made by Guseinov-Bohner [1], Cabada-Vivero [2] and Rzezuchowski [6]. In this article, we adapt the concept of Lebesgue-Stieltjes measure to time scales. We define Lebesgue-Stieltjes \Delta and \nabla-measures and by using these measures, we define an integral adapted to time scales, specifically Lebesgue-Stieltjes \Delta-integral. We also establish the relation between Lebesgue-Stieltjes measure and Lebesgue-Stieltjes \Delta-measure, …
Korovkin Type Error Estimates For Positive Linear Operators Involving Some Special Functions, Ogün Doğru, Esra Erkuş-Duman
Korovkin Type Error Estimates For Positive Linear Operators Involving Some Special Functions, Ogün Doğru, Esra Erkuş-Duman
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In the present paper, we introduce a new sequence of linear positive operators with the help of generating functions. We obtain some Korovkin type approximation properties for these operators and compute rates of convergence by means of the first and second order modulus of continuities and Peetre´s K-functional. In order to obtain explicit expressions for the first and second moment of our operators, we obtain a functional differential equation including our operators. Furthermore, we deal with a modification of our operators converging to integral of function f on the interval (0,1).

Multiple Positive Solutions For Nonlinear Third-Order Boundary Value Problems In Banach Spaces, Feng Wang, Hai-Hua Lu, Fang Zhang
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper deals with the positive solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems in Banach spaces. By using fixed point index theory, some sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one or two positive solutions to boundary value problems in Banach spaces are obtained. An example illustrating the main results is given.

Strong Convergence Theorems By An Extragradient Method For Solving Variational Inequalities And Equilibrium Problems In A Hilbert Space, Poom Kumam
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we introduce an iterative process for finding the common element of the set of fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping, the set of solutions of an equilibrium problem and the set of solutions of the variational inequality for monotone, Lipschitz-continuous mappings. The iterative process is based on the so-called extragradient method. We show that the sequence converges strongly to a common element of the above three sets under some parametric controlling conditions. This main theorem extends a recent result of Yao, Liou and Yao [Y. Yao, Y. C. Liou and J.-C. Yao, ''An Extragradient Method for Fixed …
