Commutators, Words, Conjugacy Classes And Character Methods, Aner Shalev Jan 2007

Commutators, Words, Conjugacy Classes And Character Methods, Aner Shalev

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this survey paper we show how character methods can be used to solve a wide range of seemingly unrelated problems. These include commutators, powers of conjugacy classes and related random walks, as well as word maps and Waring type problems. In particular we describe recent progress made on conjectures of Ore, of Thompson, and of Lulov and Pak. New open problems and conjectures are also stated.

Centralizers In Locally Finite Groups, Pavel Shumyatsky Jan 2007

Centralizers In Locally Finite Groups, Pavel Shumyatsky

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The topic of the present paper is the following question. Let G be a locally finite group admitting an automorphism \phi of finite order such that the centralizer C_G(\phi) satisfies certain finiteness conditions. What impact does this have on the structure of the group G? Equivalently, one can ask the same question when \phi is an element of G. Sometimes the impact is quite strong and the paper is a survey of results illustrating this phenomenon. In particular, we concentrate on results where G is shown to have a large nilpotent or soluble subgroup. Naturally, in each case the result …

Hartley´S Theorem On Representations Of The General Linear Groups And Classical Groups, A. E. Zalesski Jan 2007

Hartley´S Theorem On Representations Of The General Linear Groups And Classical Groups, A. E. Zalesski

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We suggest a new proof of Hartley's theorem on representations of the general linear groups GL_n(K) where K is a field. Let H be a subgroup of GL_n(K) and E the natural GL_n(K)-module. Suppose that the restriction E _H of E to H contains a regular KH-module. The theorem asserts that this is then true for an arbitrary GL_n(K)-module M provided dim M>1 and H is not of exponent 2. Our proof is based on the general facts of representation theory of algebraic groups. In addition, we provide partial generalizations of Hartley's theorem to other classical groups.

Black Box Groups, Şükrü Yalçinkaya Jan 2007

Black Box Groups, Şükrü Yalçinkaya

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We propose a uniform approach for recognizing all black box groups of Lie type which is based on the analysis of the structure of the centralizers of involutions. Our approach can be viewed as a computational version of the classification of the finite simple groups. We present an algorithm which constructs a long root SL_2(q)-subgroup in a finite simple group of Lie type of odd characteristic, then we use the Aschbacher's ``Classical Involution Theorem'' as a model in the recognition algorithm and we construct all root SL_2(q)-subgroups corresponding to the nodes in the extended Dynkin diagram, that is, we construct …

Population Modeling By Differential Equations, Hui Luo Jan 2007

Population Modeling By Differential Equations, Hui Luo

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A general model for the population of Tibetan antelope is constructed. The present model shows that the given data is reasonably logistic. From this model the extinction of antelopes in China is predicted if we don’t consider the effects of humans on the population. Moreover, this model shows that the population is limited. A projected limiting number is given by this model. Some typical mathematical models are introduced such as exponential model and logistic model. The solutions of those models are analyzed.

Complex Symmetric Operators And Applications Ii, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Mihai Putinar Jan 2007

Complex Symmetric Operators And Applications Ii, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Mihai Putinar

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

A bounded linear operator T on a complex Hilbert space H is called complex symmetric if T = CT*C, where C is a conjugation (an isometric, antilinear involution of H). We prove that T = CJ|T|, where J is an auxiliary conjugation commuting with |T| = √{T*T). We consider numerous examples, including the Poincaré-Neumann singular integral (bounded) operator and the Jordan model operator (compressed shift). The decomposition T = CJ|T| also extends to the class of unbounded C-self adjoint operators, originally introduced by Glazman. In this context, it provides a method for estimating the norms …

Wild Partitions And Number Theory, David P. Roberts Jan 2007

Wild Partitions And Number Theory, David P. Roberts

Mathematics Publications

We introduce the notion of wild partition to describe in combinatorial language an important situation in the theory of p-adic fields. For Q a power of p, we get a sequence of numbers λQ,n counting the number of certain wild partitions of n. We give an explicit formula for the corresponding generating function ΛQ(x) = ΣλQ,nxn and use it to show that λ1/n Q,n tends to Q1/(p-1). We apply this asymptotic result to support a finiteness conjecture about number fields. Our finiteness conjecture …

Lightlike Hypersurfaces Of Semi-Euclidean Spaces Satisfying Curvature Conditions Of Semisymmetry Type, Bayram Şahi̇n Jan 2007

Lightlike Hypersurfaces Of Semi-Euclidean Spaces Satisfying Curvature Conditions Of Semisymmetry Type, Bayram Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we investigate lightlike hypersurfaces which are semi-symmetric, Ricci semi-symmetric, parallel or semi-parallel in a semi-Euclidean space. We obtain that every screen conformal lightlike hypersurface of the Minkowski spacetime is semi-symmetric. For higher dimensions, we show that the semi-symmetry condition of a screen conformal lightlike hypersurface reduces to the semi-symmetry condition of a leaf of its screen distribution. We also obtain that semi-symmetric and Ricci semi-symmetric lightlike hypersurfaces are totally geodesic under certain conditions. Moreover, we show that there exist no non-totally geodesic parallel hypersurfaces in a Lorentzian space.

Rayleigh Number In A Stability Problem For A Micropolar Fluid, Ioana Florica Dragomirescu Jan 2007

Rayleigh Number In A Stability Problem For A Micropolar Fluid, Ioana Florica Dragomirescu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Approximate numerical evaluations of the Rayleigh number are obtained for a stability problem of thermal convection in a heat-conducting micropolar fluid layer between two rigid boundaries [7]. The influences of all the physical parameters on the values of the Rayleigh number are studied. Also, approximate neutral curves and neutral surfaces are represented in various parameters spaces.

Extreme Points Of Certain Subsets Of Hermitian Elements In Banach Algebras, Gerd Herzog, Christoph Schmoeger Jan 2007

Extreme Points Of Certain Subsets Of Hermitian Elements In Banach Algebras, Gerd Herzog, Christoph Schmoeger

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider the real Banach spaces H(A) of all hermitian elements of a complex Banach algebra A. We prove that if an even power of a \in N(A) is hermitian, then a is an extreme point of the unit ball of H(A) if and only if a^2 = 1. Moreover, if an odd power of a \in H(A) is hermitian and a is an extreme point of the unit ball of H(A), then a^3 = a.

Higher Order Generalization Of Positive Linear Operators Defined By A Class Of Borel Measures, Oktay Duman Jan 2007

Higher Order Generalization Of Positive Linear Operators Defined By A Class Of Borel Measures, Oktay Duman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present paper, we introduce a sequence of linear operators, which is a higher order generalization of positive linear operators defined by a class of Borel measures studied in [2]. Then, using the concept of A-statistical convergence we obtain some approximation results which are stronger than the aspects of the classical approximation theory.

Closure Of Minimal Extensions, M. El Hajoui, A. Miri Jan 2007

Closure Of Minimal Extensions, M. El Hajoui, A. Miri

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a commutative ring with a unit and M an R-module. In this paper we give a comparison between the F-closure in M of an R-submodule having a minimal extension and the closure of this minimal extension for the same Gabriel topology defined on the ring R. If J(R) \in F we prove that both closures are the same. Moreover, if R is Artinian or semi-simple then the converse also holds.

Finitary Actions And Invariant Ideals, D. S. Passman Jan 2007

Finitary Actions And Invariant Ideals, D. S. Passman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let K be a field and let G be a group. If G acts on an abelian group V, then it acts naturally on any group algebra K[V], and we are concerned with classifying the G-stable ideals of K[V]. In this paper, we consider a rather concrete situation. We take G to be an infinite locally finite simple group acting in a finitary manner on V. When G is a finitary version of a classical linear group, then we show that the augmentation ideal \omega K[G] is the unique proper G-stable ideal of K[V]. On the other hand, if G …

Mars: An Education-Oriented Mips Assembly Language Simulator, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

We describe the implementation of “MARS,” a GUI, Java-based simulator for the MIPS assembly language. MIPS, the computer architecture underlying the simulated assembly language, is widely used in industry and is the basis of the popular textbook Computer Organization and Design [6], used at over 400 universities. The MARS simulator has been implemented with characteristics that are especially useful to undergraduate computer science students and their instructors.

Programming With Perltex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough Jan 2007

Programming With Perltex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

PerlTEX couples two well-known worlds—the Perl programming language and the LATEX typesetting system. The resulting system provides users with a way to augment LATEX macros with Perl code, thereby adding programming capabilities to LATEX that would otherwise be difficult to express. In this paper, we illus- trate the use of PerlTEX with a variety of examples and explain the associated Perl code. Although Perl may perhaps be best known for its string manipula- tion capabilities, we demonstrate how PerlTEX indirectly provides support for “programming” graphics through the use of additional packages such as TikZ.
