Jesus, Plato, Math And Theology: What Is Truth?, Paul Moffett
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2005
Mathematical ontology is relevant to Christians because so much of Christian theology has been historically shaped by Platonic mathematics and the ontology that goes with it. The various contributors to Mathematics in a Postmodern Age, edited by Howell and Bradley, seem to assume that Christians are necessarily realists in ontology, and they are not alone. But what is the cause of this Christian connection with mathematical realism in ontology? How much has our idea of God been shaped by Plato and his mathematics?
Blaise Pascal - Mathematician, Mystic, Disciple, Tim Rogalsky
Blaise Pascal - Mathematician, Mystic, Disciple, Tim Rogalsky
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2005
This is the story of a multi-faceted Christian mathematician. Instrumental in the development of calculus, probability theory, and computing machines, Pascal (1623-1662) was a man equally enamoured with mind and spirit. His conversion experience was marked by both rational decision and mystical vision. He is perhaps best known for "Pascal's wager," which simplistic "fire insurance" version of Christianity, demanding little from the convert. However, a more careful reading of his work and his life reveals that Pascal knew much about discipleship and its cost.
Call For A Non-Euclidean, Post-Cantorian Theology, Saburo Matsumoto
Call For A Non-Euclidean, Post-Cantorian Theology, Saburo Matsumoto
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2005
In this paper I propose a new approach to theology, which I refer to as a "non-Euclidean, post-Cantorian" theology. I first review three accomplishments in modern mathematics with lasting philosophical implications: non-Euclidean geometry, set theory, and the Incompleteness Theorems of Gödel. Since all of these are ideas that came after much of traditional theology had already been formed, I challenge that theology be revisited in light of what we can learn from the mathematical struggles that produced these amazing and counter-intuitive truths. I give some concrete examples and propose that such an effort can make non-trivial contribution in theology and …

Monomial Nonnegativity And The Bruhat Order, Brian Drake, Sean Gerrish, Mark Skandera
Dartmouth Scholarship
We show that five nonnegativity properties of polynomials coincide when restricted to polynomials of the form x1, pi(1) ... xn,pi(n) - x1, sigma(1) ... xn, sigma(n), where $\pi and sigma are permutations in Sn. In particular, we show that each of these properties may be used to characterize the Bruhat order on Sn.
Explicit Computations Supporting A Generalization Of Serre's Conjecture, Brian Francis Hansen
Explicit Computations Supporting A Generalization Of Serre's Conjecture, Brian Francis Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Serre's conjecture on the modularity of Galois representations makes a connection between two-dimensional Galois representations and modular forms. A conjecture by Ash, Doud, and Pollack generalizes Serre's to higher-dimensional Galois representations. In this paper we discuss an explicit computational example supporting the generalized claim. An ambiguity in a calculation within the example is resolved using a method of complex approximation.

Filtering The Bible And Filtering Spam, Gene B. Chase
Filtering The Bible And Filtering Spam, Gene B. Chase
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2005
I argue that John Craig (1996?–1731) is the first to do Bayesian statistics. Filtering email spam today using Bayes's analysis of 1763 is a new application of an old theorem. Craig 67 years before Bayes's theorem used subjective probabilities reasoning to argue that Jesus would return in the year 3150, because the Bible would eventually come into disrepute (become spam?) then.
Asserting Cs != Can't Spcialize, Building Community In A Computer Science Program, Kim Kihlstrom
Asserting Cs != Can't Spcialize, Building Community In A Computer Science Program, Kim Kihlstrom
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2005
As humans, we are designed to live in community. "Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others" (Romans 12:4-5). We believe it is of critical importance to build community within a computer science program, first of all because it is part of God's calling for us. In addition, building communit allows us to equip students with the interpersonal skills that they need for a productive career, and to attract …

I think I became a mathematician because I loved to play games as a child. I learned about probability and expectation by playing games like backgammon, bridge, and Risk. But I experienced the greater thrill of careful deductive reasoning through games like Mastermind and chess. In fact, for many years I took the game of chess quite seriously and played in many tournaments. But I gave up the game when I started college and turned my attention to more serious pursuits, like learning real mathematics.

Factoring Higher-Dimensional Shifts Of Finite Type Onto The Full Shift, Aimee S.A. Johnson, K. Madden
Factoring Higher-Dimensional Shifts Of Finite Type Onto The Full Shift, Aimee S.A. Johnson, K. Madden
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
A one-dimensional shift of finite type with entropy at least log factors onto the full -shift. The factor map is constructed by exploiting the fact that , or a subshift of , is conjugate to a shift of finite type in which every symbol can be followed by at least symbols. We will investigate analogous statements for higher-dimensional shifts of finite type. We will also show that for a certain class of mixing higher-dimensional shifts of finite type, sufficient entropy implies that is finitely equivalent to a shift of finite type that maps onto the full -shift.
Self And On-Selfadjoint Sturm-Liouville Operators With Exponentially Decaying Potentials, Alain Kerouanton
Self And On-Selfadjoint Sturm-Liouville Operators With Exponentially Decaying Potentials, Alain Kerouanton
Doctoral
In this thesis we investigate the properties of a class of linear differential operators known as Sturm-Liouville operators. Sturm-Liouville operators arise from differential equations of the form - y”+q(x)y = λy, where q is known as the potential and λ is a spectral parameter. This differential equation has been of great importance in mathematics and physics alike. We allow the potential to be real or complex valued and assume that q satisfies |q(x)|≤ce-ax, x≥0, where a >0 and c > 0. We first give a brief account of the mathematical background we will be using and then proceed to give a …

Self-Similar Measures Associated To {Ifs} With Non-Uniform Contraction Ratios, Sze-Man Ngai, Yang Wang
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this paper we study the absolute continuity of self-similar measures defined by iterated function systems (IFS) whose contraction ratios are not uniform. We introduce a transversality condition for a multi-parameter family of IFS and study the absolute continuity of the corresponding self-similar measures. Our study is a natural extension of the study of Bernoulli convolutions by Solomyak, Peres, et al.
Influences Of Surfactant On The Breakup Of A Fluid Jet In Viscous Surrounding, Muhammad Irfan Hameed
Influences Of Surfactant On The Breakup Of A Fluid Jet In Viscous Surrounding, Muhammad Irfan Hameed
Dissertations
The effect of insoluble surfactant on the breakup of a fluid jet surrounded by another viscous fluid at low Reynolds number is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Equations governing the evolution of the interface and surfactant concentration are derived using a long wavelength approximation for the case of an inviscid jet and a slightly viscous jet surrounded by a more viscous fluid. These one dimensional partial differential equations governing the evolution of the slender jet are solved numerically for given initial interfacial perturbations and surfactant concentration. It is found that the presence of insoluble surfactant at the interface retards the …
