Normalized Solutions For Sobolev Critical Schrödinger-Bopp-Podolsky Systems, Yuxin Li, Xiaojun Chang, Zhaosheng Feng Sep 2023

Normalized Solutions For Sobolev Critical Schrödinger-Bopp-Podolsky Systems, Yuxin Li, Xiaojun Chang, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We study the Sobolev critical Schr¨odinger-Bopp-Podolsky system −∆u + φu = λu + µ|u|p−2u + |u|4u in R3, −∆φ + ∆2φ = 4πu2 in R3, under the mass constraint u2 dx = c R3 for some prescribed c > 0, where 2 < p < 8/3, µ > 0 is a parameter, and λ ∈ R is a Lagrange multiplier. By developing a constraint minimizing approach, we show that the above system admits a local minimizer. Furthermore, we establish the existence of normalized ground state solutions.

Constrained Quantization For A Uniform Distribution With Respect To A Family Of Constraints, Megha Pandey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Sep 2023

Constrained Quantization For A Uniform Distribution With Respect To A Family Of Constraints, Megha Pandey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, with respect to a family of constraints for a uniform probability distribution we determine the optimal sets of n-points and the nth constrained quantization errors for all positive integers n. We also calculate the constrained quantization dimension and the constrained quantization coefficient. The work in this paper shows that the constrained quantization dimension of an absolutely continuous probability measure depends on the family of constraints and is not always equal to the Euclidean dimension of the underlying space where the support of the probability measure is defined.

Stability Analyses On The Effect Of Vaccination And Contact Tracing In Monkeypox Virus Transmission, Solomon Eshun, Richmond Essieku, James Ladzekpo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Monkeypox is a significant health concern due to its potential for morbidity and occasional mortality. Vaccination and effective contact tracing play pivotal roles in controlling infectious diseases, including monkeypox. This study aims to contribute to our understanding of monkeypox dynamics by developing a comprehensive mathematical model that incorporates key factors such as vaccination, quarantining, and contact tracing. Through rigorous sensitivity analysis, we explore the impact of varying vaccination coverage and contact tracing on the disease’s dynamics. In particular, we investigate the dynamics of the disease in relation to variable vaccination coverage and contact tracing. Our findings highlight the critical role …

Empowering 5g Mmwave: Leveraging Kml Placemarks For Enhanced Rf Design And Deployment Efficiency, Gustavo A. Fernandez

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This publication explores the significance of Keyhole Markup Language (KML) in telecommunications, particularly in the context of 5G mmWave RF design and planning. With the advent of 5G mmWave technology, the demand for seamless and efficient network deployments has never been greater. The deployment of small cells and repeaters for 5G mmWave necessitates utmost precision in location accuracy and rapid information exchange during site surveys and evaluations. The challenges of mmWave frequencies, including their limited range and susceptibility to attenuation, intensify the complexity and criticality of this process. Network operators must ensure that the chosen location is devoid of obstacles …

The Rayleigh–Bénard Problem For Water With Maximum Density Effects, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, Dambaru Bhatta Jul 2023

The Rayleigh–Bénard Problem For Water With Maximum Density Effects, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, Dambaru Bhatta

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Linear stability and weakly nonlinear stability analyses are developed for Rayleigh–Bénard convection in water near 3.98 °C subject to isothermal boundary conditions. The density–temperature relationship (equation of state) is approximated by a cubic polynomial, including linear, quadratic, and cubic terms. The continuity equation, the Navier–Stokes momentum equation, the equation of state, and the energy equation constitute the governing system. Linear stability analysis is used to investigate how the maximum density property of water affects the onset of convective instability and the choice of unstable wave number for four different types of boundary conditions. Then, a weakly nonlinear stability study is …

Asymptotics And Sign Patterns For Coefficients In Expansions Of Habiro Elements, Ankush Goswami, Abhash Kumar Jha, Byungchan Kim, Robert Osburn Jul 2023

Asymptotics And Sign Patterns For Coefficients In Expansions Of Habiro Elements, Ankush Goswami, Abhash Kumar Jha, Byungchan Kim, Robert Osburn

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We prove asymptotics and study sign patterns for coefficients in expansions of elements in the Habiro ring which satisfy a strange identity. As an application, we prove asymptotics and discuss positivity for the generalized Fishburn numbers which arise from the Kontsevich–Zagier series associated to the colored Jones polynomial for a family of torus knots. This extends Zagier’s result on asymptotics for the Fishburn numbers.

Effect Of Total Population, Population Density And Weighted Population Density On The Spread Of Covid-19 In Malaysia, Hui Shan Wong, Md Zobaer Hasan, Omar Sharif, Azizur Rahman

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Since November 2019, most countries across the globe have suffered from the disastrous consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic which redefined every aspect of human life. Given the inevitable spread and transmission of the virus, it is critical to acknowledge the factors that catalyse transmission of the disease. This research investigates the relation of the external demographic parameters such as total population, population density and weighted population density on the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression were utilized to identify the relation between the population-related variables and the spread of Covid-19 in Malaysia using data from …

Catalan Numbers As Discrepancies For A Family Of Substitutions On Infinite Alphabets, Dirk Frettlöh, Alexey Garber, Neil Mañibo Jul 2023

Catalan Numbers As Discrepancies For A Family Of Substitutions On Infinite Alphabets, Dirk Frettlöh, Alexey Garber, Neil Mañibo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this work, we consider a class of substitutions on infinite alphabets and show that they exhibit a growth behaviour which is impossible for substitutions on finite alphabets. While for both settings the leading term of the tile counting function is exponential (and guided by the inflation factor), the behaviour of the second-order term is strikingly different. For the finite setting, it is known that the second term is also exponential or exponential times a polynomial. We exhibit a large family of examples where the second term is at least exponential in n divided by half-integer powers of n, where …

Contractive Symmetric Matrix Completion Problems Related To Graphs, Sangmin Chun, In Hyoun Kim, Jaewoong Kim, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider the contractive real symmetric matrix completion problems motivated in part by studies on sparse (or dense) matrices for weighted sparse recovery problems and rating matrices with rating density in recommender systems. We completely characterize symmetric patterns P with the property (C) that every partially contractive real symmetric matrix with pattern P has a contractive real symmetric completion using graphs.

Integrable Discretizations For A Generalized Sine-Gordon Equation And The Reductions To The Sine-Gordon Equation And The Short Pulse Equation, Han-Han Sheng, Bao-Feng Feng, Guo-Fu Yu Jul 2023

Integrable Discretizations For A Generalized Sine-Gordon Equation And The Reductions To The Sine-Gordon Equation And The Short Pulse Equation, Han-Han Sheng, Bao-Feng Feng, Guo-Fu Yu

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose fully discrete analogues of a generalized sine-Gordon (gsG) equation utx=(1+ν∂2x)sinu. The bilinear equations of the discrete KP hierarchy and the proper definition of discrete hodograph transformations are the keys to the construction. Then we derive semi-discrete analogues of the gsG equation from the fully discrete gsG equation by taking the temporal parameter b→0. Especially, one full-discrete gsG equation is reduced to a semi-discrete gsG equation in the case of ν=−1 (Feng {\it et al. Numer. Algorithms} 2023). Furthermore, N-soliton solutions to the semi- and fully discrete analogues of the gsG equation in the determinant form …

Covering By Planks And Avoiding Zeros Of Polynomials, Alexey Glazyrin, Roman Karasev, Alexandr Polyanskii Jul 2023

Covering By Planks And Avoiding Zeros Of Polynomials, Alexey Glazyrin, Roman Karasev, Alexandr Polyanskii

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We note that the recent polynomial proofs of the spherical and complex plank covering problems by Zhao and Ortega-Moreno give some general information on zeros of real and complex polynomials restricted to the unit sphere. As a corollary of these results, we establish several generalizations of the celebrated Bang plank covering theorem. We prove a tight polynomial analog of the Bang theorem for the Euclidean ball and an even stronger polynomial version for the complex projective space. Specifically, for the ball, we show that for every real nonzero d-variate polynomial P of degree n, there exists a point in the …

A Generalized Two-Component Camassa-Holm System With Complex Nonlinear Terms And Waltzing Peakons, Xiaolin Pan, Shouming Zhou, Zhijun Qiao Jun 2023

A Generalized Two-Component Camassa-Holm System With Complex Nonlinear Terms And Waltzing Peakons, Xiaolin Pan, Shouming Zhou, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we deal with the Cauchy problem for a generalized two-component Camassa-Holm system with waltzing peakons and complex higher-order nonlinear terms. By the classical Friedrichs regularization method and the transport equation theory, the local well-posedness of solutions for the generalized coupled Camassa-Holm system in nonhomogeneous Besov spaces and the critical Besov space B5/22,1×B5/22,1 was obtained. Besides the propagation behaviors of compactly supported solutions, the global existence and precise blow-up mechanism for the strong solutions of this system are determined. In addition to wave breaking, the another one of the most essential property of this equation is the existence …

Hierarchical Wilson–Cowan Models And Connection Matrices, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo, Brian A. Zambrano-Luna Jun 2023

Hierarchical Wilson–Cowan Models And Connection Matrices, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo, Brian A. Zambrano-Luna

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This work aims to study the interplay between the Wilson–Cowan model and connection matrices. These matrices describe cortical neural wiring, while Wilson–Cowan equations provide a dynamical description of neural interaction. We formulate Wilson–Cowan equations on locally compact Abelian groups. We show that the Cauchy problem is well posed. We then select a type of group that allows us to incorporate the experimental information provided by the connection matrices. We argue that the classical Wilson–Cowan model is incompatible with the small-world property. A necessary condition to have this property is that the Wilson–Cowan equations be formulated on a compact group. We …

Math Attitudes And Identity Of High Schoolers Impacted Through Participating In Informal, Near-Peer Mentoring, Aaron T. Wilson, Xiaohui Wang, Mayra Ortiz Galarza, John Knight, Eliazar Patiño

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Research in mentoring has shown that students may at times be more willing and able to absorb information that is delivered to them by their near-peers, rather than by traditional figures of authority, like teachers and professors. In this study, underrepresented minority high school students participated in an informal learning experience that was led by college students who were "near-peers" to the high schoolers. Students were engaged by participating in interactive MathShows, following a Math Social Media Campaign, and attending a summer Math Internship. Participants in the quantitative component of the study included N = 559 U.S. high schoolers who …

Contextualizing The Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching Framework For Teachers Of Emergent Bilinguals, Luis M. Fernandez, Mayra Ortiz Galarza Jun 2023

Contextualizing The Mathematical Knowledge For Teaching Framework For Teachers Of Emergent Bilinguals, Luis M. Fernandez, Mayra Ortiz Galarza

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We are amid a rapid demographic shift, with Emergent Bilinguals (EBs) being the fastest growing K-12 student population. This has created an ambitious goal for teacher education programs as they must prepare mathematics pre-service teachers (PSTs) to assess the needs of EBs. As a response, this study conducted a qualitative analysis of 16 PSTs to propose a contextualized version of the Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (MKT) framework as an emerging knowledge base of teaching that can be used to further guide the planning and enactment of teacher education programs in the mathematics education of EBs, specifically.

The Coupled Modified Yajima–Oikawa System: Model Derivation And Soliton Solutions, Junchao Chen, Bao-Feng Feng, Ken-Ichi Maruno Jun 2023

The Coupled Modified Yajima–Oikawa System: Model Derivation And Soliton Solutions, Junchao Chen, Bao-Feng Feng, Ken-Ichi Maruno

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider a coupled modified Yajima–Oikawa (YO) system which describes the nonlinear resonant interaction between one long wave (LW) and two short waves (SWs). It is shown that this coupled system can be derived from a three-component modified nonlinear Schrödinger equations through asymptotic reductions. Furthermore, the bright, dark multi-soliton and multi-breather solutions in terms of determinants are obtained respectively by virtue of the bilinear Kadomtsev–Petviashvili-hierarchy reduction technique. The detailed analysis of dynamical properties for one- and two-solitons and breathers is performed, which show the interesting collision properties for the bright and dark solitons. Particularly, differing from …

Flow Patterns For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Fluids In A Cylindrical Pipe, Erick Sanchez, Dambaru Bhatta Jun 2023

Flow Patterns For Newtonian And Non-Newtonian Fluids In A Cylindrical Pipe, Erick Sanchez, Dambaru Bhatta

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

A fully developed laminar steady flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid in a horizontal cylindrical pipe is considered here. Flow patterns for an incompressible, viscous fluid for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids such as shear-thinning, shear-thickening and Bingham plastic fluids are analyzed in this study. Assuming that the flow is only due to the wall shear stress and the pressure drop, the velocity component in the axial direction for these cases is derived. Computational results of the velocity profiles for various cases are obtained using MATLAB and presented in graphical forms. It is observed that the velocity profile is parabolic …

P-Adic Statistical Field Theory And Convolutional Deep Boltzmann Machines, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo, Cuiyu He, B. A. Zambrano-Luna May 2023

P-Adic Statistical Field Theory And Convolutional Deep Boltzmann Machines, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo, Cuiyu He, B. A. Zambrano-Luna

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding how deep learning architectures work is a central scientific problem. Recently, a correspondence between neural networks (NNs) and Euclidean quantum field theories has been proposed. This work investigates this correspondence in the framework of p-adic statistical field theories (SFTs) and neural networks. In this case, the fields are real-valued functions defined on an infinite regular rooted tree with valence p, a fixed prime number. This infinite tree provides the topology for a continuous deep Boltzmann machine (DBM), which is identified with a statistical field theory on this infinite tree. In the p-adic framework, there is a …

The Development Of Sociomathematical Norms In The Transition To Tertiary Exam-Oriented Individualistic Mathematics Education In An East Asian Context, Woong Lim, Hyunkyoung Yoon, Younggon Bae, Oh Nam Kwon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This study investigates social, mathematical, and sociomathematical norms perceived by college students in an engineering mathematics course and examines the students’ sense of mathematics as signals of individual merit. Data sources include a survey and one-on-one interviews with 38 students. The findings help illustrate student perceptions of academic social norms in a large-lecture course represented by the acquisition model of learning in college, detached from communal and collaborative disciplinary practices. Findings provide insights into the local educational context of an East Asian country as a case study when exam-oriented mathematics is institutionalized as normalcy.

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Apr 2023

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The basic goal of quantization for probability distribution is to reduce the number of values, which is typically uncountable, describing a probability distribution to some finite set and thus to make an approximation of a continuous probability distribution by a discrete distribution. It has broad application in signal processing and data compression. In this paper, first we define the uniform distributions on different curves such as a line segment, a circle, and the boundary of an equilateral triangle. Then, we give the exact formulas to determine the optimal sets of n -means and the n th quantization errors for different …

Multiple Solutions Of P-Fractional Schrödinger-Choquard-Kirchhoff Equations With Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev Critical Exponents, Xiaolu Lin, Shenzhou Zheng, Zhaosheng Feng Apr 2023

Multiple Solutions Of P-Fractional Schrödinger-Choquard-Kirchhoff Equations With Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev Critical Exponents, Xiaolu Lin, Shenzhou Zheng, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article, we are concerned with multiple solutions of Schrödinger-Choquard-Kirchhoff equations involving the fractional p -Laplacian and Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical exponents in R N . We classify the multiplicity of the solutions in accordance with the Kirchhoff term M ( ⋅ ) and different ranges of q shown in the nonlinearity f ( x , ⋅ ) by means of the variational methods and Krasnoselskii’s genus theory. As an immediate consequence, some recent related results have been improved and extended.

Cranks For Partitions With Bounded Largest Part, Dennis Eichhorn, Brandt Kronholm, Acadia Larsen Apr 2023

Cranks For Partitions With Bounded Largest Part, Dennis Eichhorn, Brandt Kronholm, Acadia Larsen

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

For 80 years, Dyson’s rank has been known as the partition statistic that witnesses the first two of Ramanujan’s celebrated congruences for the ordinary partition function. In this paper, we show that Dyson’s rank actually witnesses families of partition congruences modulo every prime . This comes from an in-depth study of when a “multiplicity-based statistic” is a crank witnessing congruences for the function p ` n, m˘ , which enumerates partitions of n with parts of size at most m. We also show that as the modulus increases, there is an ever-growing collection of distinct multiplicity-based cranks witnessing these same …

Generalized Spherical Aluthge Transforms And Binormality For Commuting Pairs Of Operators, Slaviša Djordjević, Jaewoong Kim, Jasang Yoon Apr 2023

Generalized Spherical Aluthge Transforms And Binormality For Commuting Pairs Of Operators, Slaviša Djordjević, Jaewoong Kim, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized spherical Aluthge transforms for commuting pairs of operators and study nontrivial joint invariant (resp. hyperinvariant) subspaces between the generalized spherical Aluthge transform and the original commuting pair. Next, we study the norm continuity through generalized Aluthge transform maps. We also study how the Taylor spectra and the Fredrolm index of commuting pairs of operators behave under the spherical Duggal transform. Finally, we introduce the notion of Campbell binormality for commuting pairs of operators and investigate some of its basic properties under spherical Aluthge and Duggal transforms. Moreover, we obtain new set …

P-Adic Cellular Neural Networks: Applications To Image Processing, B. A. Zambrano-Luna, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo Apr 2023

P-Adic Cellular Neural Networks: Applications To Image Processing, B. A. Zambrano-Luna, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The p-adic cellular neural networks (CNNs) are mathematical generalizations of the neural networks introduced by Chua and Yang in the 80s. In this work we present two new types of -adic CNNs that can perform computations with real data, and whose dynamics can be understood almost completely. The first type of networks are edge detectors for grayscale images. The stationary states of these networks are organized hierarchically in a lattice structure. The dynamics of any of these networks consists of transitions toward some minimal state in the lattice. The second type is a new class of reaction–diffusion networks. We investigate …

Nonnegative matrix factorization can be used to automatically detect topics within a corpus in an unsupervised fashion. The technique amounts to an approximation of a nonnegative matrix as the product of two nonnegative matrices of lower rank. In certain applications it is desirable to extract topics and use them to predict quantitative outcomes. In this paper, we show Nonnegative Matrix Factorization can be combined with regression on a continuous response variable by minimizing a penalty function that adds a weighted regression error to a matrix factorization error. We show theoretically that as the weighting increases, the regression error in training …

For |q|<1 >, define fi=∏∞n=1(1−qin) , and let (A(q),B(q)) be any of the pairs (f41,f81f22), (f41,f101f23), (f61,f42f21), (f61,f141f42), (f101,f62f21), (f141,f53f1),(f141,f82f21). For any such pair (A(q),B(q)) , define the sequences {a(n)} and {b(n)} to be the coefficients of qn of A(q) and B(q) , respectively. Then for each pair it is shown that a(n) vanishes if and only if b(n) vanishes. In each case, a criterion is given which states precisely when a(n)=b(n)=0 . Moreover, for the pairs (f261,f93f1) , (f261,f162f61) it is shown that a(n)=b(n)=0 if 12n+13 satisfies a criteria of Serre for a(n)=0 .

We propose a multi-scale hybridized topic modeling method to find hidden topics from transcribed interviews more accurately and more efficiently than traditional topic modeling methods. Our multiscale hybridized topic modeling method (MSHTM) approaches data at different scales and performs topic modeling in a hierarchical way utilizing first a classical method, Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, and then a transformer-based method, BERTopic. It harnesses the strengths of both NMF and BERTopic. Our method can help researchers and the public better extract and interpret the interview information. Additionally, it provides insights for new indexing systems based on the topic level. We then deploy our …
