The Signed-Graphic Representations Of Wheels And Whirls, Dan Slilaty, Hongxun Qin
The Signed-Graphic Representations Of Wheels And Whirls, Dan Slilaty, Hongxun Qin
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We characterize all of the ways to represent the wheel matroids and whirl matroids using frame matroids of signed graphs. The characterization of wheels is in terms of topological duality in the projective plane and the characterization of whirls is in terms of topological duality in the annulus.

The Propagation Of Non-Lefschetz Type, The Gottlieb Group And Related Questions, John Oprea
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
This is a brief note which indicates how the property of being non-Lefschetz may be propagated by equivariant symplectic maps. We also discuss some questions related to the Gottlieb group and nilpotency of symplectic manifolds.
Two Classes Of Time-Inhomogeneous Markov Chains: Analysis Of The Periodic Case, Attahiru Sule Alfa, Barbara Haas Margolius
Two Classes Of Time-Inhomogeneous Markov Chains: Analysis Of The Periodic Case, Attahiru Sule Alfa, Barbara Haas Margolius
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We consider the M/G/1 and GI/M/1 types of Markov chains for which their one step transitions depend on the times of the transitions. These types of Markov chains are encountered in several stochastic models, including queueing systems, dams, inventory systems, insurance risk models, etc. We show that for the cases when the time parameters are periodic the systems can be analyzed using some extensions of known results in the matrix-analytic methods literature. We have limited our examples to those relating to queueing systems to allow us a focus. An example application of the model to a real life problem is …
A Probabilistic Analysis Of The Trading The Line Strategy, V. Abramov, M. K. Khan, Rasul A. Khan
A Probabilistic Analysis Of The Trading The Line Strategy, V. Abramov, M. K. Khan, Rasul A. Khan
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We provide analytic models for which the appropriate statistics of the trading the line strategy, N h , can be derived in closed form. In particular, we provide closed-form expressions concerning the average duration of the open position, E(N h ), the variance of the open duration, Var(N h ), the average of the stopped log price, E(S N h ), the variance of the stopped log price, Var(S N h ), the correlation, Corr(N h , S N h ), and the Laplace transform, E(e−s N h ). These results are obtained, in discrete time settings, for binomial and …
Origin Of Conductive Surface Layer In Annealed Zno, David C. Look, B. Claflin, Helen Smith
Origin Of Conductive Surface Layer In Annealed Zno, David C. Look, B. Claflin, Helen Smith
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
The highly conductive surface layers found in nearly all as-grown or annealed bulk ZnO wafers are studied by temperature-dependent Hall-effect and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements. In this work, we have used annealing in N2 at 900 degrees C, and forming gas (5% H2 in N2) at 600 degrees C, to cause a large enough surface conduction that SIMS measurements can be reliably employed. The increased near-surface donor density, as determined from two-layer Hall-effect modeling, is consistent with an increased near-surface concentration of Al, Ga, and In atoms, resulting from diffusion. There is no evidence for …

Statistical Issues In The Normalization Of Multi-Species Microarray Data, John R. Stevens, Balasubramanian Ganesan, Prerak Desai, Sweta Rajan, Bart C. Weimer

Several species of bacteria are involved in the production of cheese, including Lactobacillus brevis and Lactococcus lactis. A custom-designed Affymetrix microarray was recently developed to study gene expression in three organisms on a single chip. This array contains only perfect match features for the coding and non-coding regions in the genomes of all three sequences. The multi-species nature of this array version raises interesting questions regarding the preprocessing or normalization strategies for the analysis of gene expression data. We present and evaluate several possible strategies using both cDNA dilution data and experimental expression data from a repeated measures design. …
Household Food Insecurity Is Inversely Associated With Social Capital And Health In Females From Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children Households In Appalachian Ohio, Jennifer L. Walker, David H. Holben, Mary L. Kropf, John P. Holcomb Jr., Heidi Anderson
Household Food Insecurity Is Inversely Associated With Social Capital And Health In Females From Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children Households In Appalachian Ohio, Jennifer L. Walker, David H. Holben, Mary L. Kropf, John P. Holcomb Jr., Heidi Anderson
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Food insecurity has been negatively associated with social capital (a measure of perceived social trust and community reciprocity) and health status. Yet, these factors have not been studied extensively among women from households participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) or the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. A cross-sectional, self-administered, mailed survey was conducted in Athens County, Ohio, to examine the household food security status, social capital, and self-rated health status of women from households receiving WIC benefits alone (n=170) and those from households receiving both WIC and Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program benefits (n=65), …
Evaluation Maps In Rational Homotopy, Yves Felix, Gregory Lupton
Evaluation Maps In Rational Homotopy, Yves Felix, Gregory Lupton
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In the rational category of nilpotent complexes, let E be an H-space acting on a space X. With mild hypotheses we show that the action on the base point w: E→X factors through a map ΓE:SE→X, where S E is a finite product of odd-dimensional spheres and Γ E is a homotopy monomorphism. Among others, the following consequences are obtained:π∗(w)6=0 if and only if w is essential and H∗(w)6=0 if and only if X satisfies a strong splitting condition.

Betti Numbers And Degree Bounds For Some Linked Zero-Schemes, Leah Gold, Hal Schenck, Hema Srinivasan
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In [J. Herzog, H. Srinivasan, Bounds for multiplicities, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 350 (1998) 2879–2902], Herzog and Srinivasan study the relationship between the graded Betti numbers of a homogeneous ideal II in a polynomial ring RR and the degree of II. For certain classes of ideals, they prove a bound on the degree in terms of the largest and smallest Betti numbers, generalizing results of Huneke and Miller in [C. Huneke, M. Miller, A note on the multiplicity of Cohen–Macaulay algebras with pure resolutions, Canad. J. Math. 37 (1985) 1149–1162]. The bound is conjectured to hold in general; we study …

Transient And Periodic Solution To The Time-Inhomogeneous Quasi-Birth Death Process, Barbara Haas Margolius
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We derive the transient distribution and periodic family of asymptotic distributions and the transient and periodic moments for the quasi-birth-and-death processes with time-varying periodic rates. The distributions and moments are given in terms of integral equations involving the related random-walk process. The method is a straight-forward application of generating functions.

Rationalized Evaluation Subgroups Of A Map Ii: Quillen Models And Adjoint Maps, Gregory Lupton, Samuel Bruce Smith
Rationalized Evaluation Subgroups Of A Map Ii: Quillen Models And Adjoint Maps, Gregory Lupton, Samuel Bruce Smith
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We identify the long exact sequence induced on rational homotopy groups by the evaluation map ω: map(X, Y ; f)→Y and in particular the rationalization of the evaluation subgroups off, in terms of derivations of Quillen models and adjoint maps. We consider a generalization of a question of Gottlieb within the context of rational homotopytheory. We also study the rationalization of the G-sequence of a map. In a separate result of independent interest, we give an explicit Quillen minimal model of a product A×X, in the case in which A is a rational co-H-space.
The Evaluation Subgroup Of A Fibre Inclusion, Gregory Lupton, Samuel Bruce Smith
The Evaluation Subgroup Of A Fibre Inclusion, Gregory Lupton, Samuel Bruce Smith
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Let ξ: X j−→Ep−→B be a fibration of simply connected CW complexes of finite type with classifying map h: B→Baut1(X).We study the evaluation subgroup G n (E, X; j)of the fibre inclusion as an invariant of the fibre- homotopy type of ξ. For spherical fibrations, we show the evaluation subgroup may be expressed as an extension of the Gottlieb group of the fibre sphere provided the classifying map h induces the trivial map on homotopy groups. We extend this result after rationalization: We show that the decomposition G∗(E, X ; j)⊗Q=(G∗(X)⊗Q)⊕(π∗(B)⊗Q)is equivalent to the condition(h)Q=0.
Separated Lie Models And The Homotopy Lie Algebra, Peter G. Bubenik
Separated Lie Models And The Homotopy Lie Algebra, Peter G. Bubenik
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Abstract. A simply connected topological space X has homotopy Lie algebra π∗(ΩX) ⊗ Q. Following Quillen, there is a connected differential graded free Lie algebra (dgL) called a Lie model, which determines the rational homotopy type of X, and whose homology is isomorphic to the homotopy Lie algebra. We show that such a Lie model can be replaced with one that has a special property we call separated. The homology of a separated dgL has a particular form which lends itself to calculations. 1.
Step-Up Simultaneous Tests For Identifying Active Effects In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Samuel S. Wu, Weizhen Wang
Step-Up Simultaneous Tests For Identifying Active Effects In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Samuel S. Wu, Weizhen Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
A sequence of null hypotheses regarding the number of negligible effects (zero effects) in orthogonal saturated designs is formulated. Two step-up simultaneous testing procedures are proposed to identify active effects (nonzero effects) under the commonly used assumption of effect sparsity. It is shown that each procedure controls the experimentwise error rate at a given alpha level in the strong sense.

A Comparison Of Graphical Methods For Assessing The Proportional Hazards Assumptions In The Cox Model, Inger Persson, Harry J. Khamis
A Comparison Of Graphical Methods For Assessing The Proportional Hazards Assumptions In The Cox Model, Inger Persson, Harry J. Khamis
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Six graphical procedures to check the assumption of proportional hazards for the Cox model are described and compared. A new way of comparing the graphical procedures using a Kolmogorov-Smirnov like maximum deviation criterion for rejection is derived for each procedure. The procedures are evaluated in a simulation study under proportional hazards and five different forms of nonproportional hazards: (1) increasing hazards, (2) decreasing hazards, (3) crossing hazards, (4) diverging hazards, and (5) nonmonotonic hazards. The procedures are compared in the two-sample case corresponding to two groups with different hazard functions. None of the procedures under consideration require partitioning of the …

Generic Subideals Of Graph Ideals And Free Resolutions, Leah Gold
Generic Subideals Of Graph Ideals And Free Resolutions, Leah Gold
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
For a graph of an n-cycle Δ with Alexander dual Δ∗, we study the free resolution of a subideal G (n) of the Stanley-Reisner ideal IΔ∗. We prove that if G(n) is generated by 3 generic elements of IΔ∗, then the second syzygy module of G(n) is isomorphic to the second syzygy module of (x1,x2,... ,x n). A result of Bruns shows that there is always a 3-generated ideal with this property. We show that it can be chosen to have a particularly nice form.

We derive the periodic family of asymptotic distributions and the periodic moments for number in the queue for the multi-server queue with Poisson arrivals and exponential service for time-varying periodic arrival and departure rates, and time-varying periodic number of servers. The method is a straight-forward application of generating functions.
Allometric Extension For Multivariate Regression Models, Thaddeus Tarpey, Christopher T. Ivey
Allometric Extension For Multivariate Regression Models, Thaddeus Tarpey, Christopher T. Ivey
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In multivariate regression, interest lies on how the response vector depends on a set of covariates. A multivariate regression model is proposed where the covariates explain variation in the response only in the direction of the first principal component axis. This model is not only parsimonious, but it provides an easy interpretation in allometric growth studies where the first principal component of the log-transformed data corresponds to constants of allometric growth. The proposed model naturally generalizes the two–group allometric extension model to the situation where groups differ according to a set of covariates. A bootstrap test for the model is …
Global Residues For Sparse Polynomial Systems, Ivan Soprunov
Global Residues For Sparse Polynomial Systems, Ivan Soprunov
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We consider families of sparse Laurent polynomials f1, . . . , fn with a finite set of common zeros Z f in the torus Tn = (C − {0})n. The global residue assigns to every Laurent polynomial g the sum of its Grothendieck residues over Z f . We present a new symbolic algorithm for computing the global residue as a rational function of the coefficients of the fi when the Newton polytopes of the fi are full-dimensional. Our results have consequences in sparse polynomial interpolation and lattice point enumeration in Minkowski sums of polytopes.

Forecasting Police Calls During Peak Times For The City Of Cleveland, John P. Holcomb, Norean Radke Sharpe
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
For a period of time, professors from the Cleveland State University worked closely with the City of Cleveland Police Department. This partnership resulted in access to police records cataloging all emergency 911 calls for the city since 1995. Here, we describe forecasting approaches that can be used by the Police Department based on hourly 911 calls in the years 2001 to 2003 throughout the city during peak call time: the third shift during summer months. This case study is appropriate for class discussions in advanced courses in statistics to explore the application of time series analysis techniques.

A C-Symplectic Free S1-Manifold With Contractible Orbits And Cat = 1/2 Dim, Christopher Allday, John Oprea
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
An interesting question in symplectic geometry concerns whether or not a closed symplectic manifold can have a free symplectic circle action with orbits contractible in the manifold. Here we present a c-symplectic example, thus showing that the problem is truly geometric as opposed to topological. Furthermore, we see that our example is the only known example of a c-symplectic manifold having non-trivial fundamental group and Lusternik-Schnirelmann category precisely half its dimension.

Temperature dependent Hall effect (TDH), low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), optical admittance spectroscopy (OAS), and thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements have been made on 6H-SiC grown by the physical vapor transport technique without intentional doping. n- and p-type as well semi-insulating samples were studied to explore the compensation mechanism in semi-insulating high purity SiC. Nitrogen and boron were found from TDH and SIMS measurements to be the dominant impurities that must be compensated to produce semi-insulating properties. The electrical activation energy of the semi-insulating sample determined from the dependence of the resistivity …

Algebraic Characterizations Of Graph Imbeddability In Surfaces And Pseudosurfaces, Lowell Abrams, Dan Slilaty
Algebraic Characterizations Of Graph Imbeddability In Surfaces And Pseudosurfaces, Lowell Abrams, Dan Slilaty
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Given a finite connected graph G and specifications for a closed, connected pseudosurface, we characterize when G can be imbedded in a closed, connected pseudosurface with the given specifications. The specifications for the pseudosurface are: the number of face-connected components, the number of pinches, the number of crosscaps and handles, and the dimension of the first Z2-homology group. The characterizations are formulated in terms of the existence of a dual graph G ∗ on the same set of edges as G which satisfies algebraic conditions inspired by homology groups and their intersection products.
On Adaptive Testing In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Daniel T. Voss, Weizhen Wang
On Adaptive Testing In Orthogonal Saturated Designs, Daniel T. Voss, Weizhen Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Adaptive, size-a step-down tests are provided for the analysis of orthogonal saturated designs. The tests work effectively under effect sparsity, and include as special cases the individual nonadaptive tests of Berk and Picard (1991) and the simultaneous nonadaptive tests of Voss (1988). The approach is similar to that used by Wang and Voss (2003) to construct adaptive confidence intervals, but testing is simpler because one can use the same denominator for all statistics. Step-down tests also have a clear power advantage over simultaneous confidence intervals and analogous single-step tests, as is demonstrated theoretically and assessed via simulation.
