The Role Of Concavity In Applications Of Avery Type Fixed Point Theorems To Higher Order Differential Equations, Abdulmalik A. Altwaty, Paul W. Eloe

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article we apply an extension of an Avery type fixed point theorem to a family of boundary value problems for higher order ordinary differential equations. The theorem employs concave and convex functionals defined on a cone in a Banach space. We begin by extending a known application to a right focal boundary value problem for a second order problem to a conjugate boundary value problem for a second order problem. We then extend inductively to a two point boundary value problem for a higher order equation. Concavity of differentiable functions plays a key role in the application to …

A Connection Between The Stochastic Heat Equation And Fractional Brownian Motion, And A Simple Proof Of A Result Of Talagrand, Zhixin Wu, Carl Mueller Jan 2012

A Connection Between The Stochastic Heat Equation And Fractional Brownian Motion, And A Simple Proof Of A Result Of Talagrand, Zhixin Wu, Carl Mueller

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We give a new representation of fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H<=1/2 using stochastic partial differential equations. This representation allows us to use the Markov property and time reversal, tools which are not usually available for fractional Brownian motion. We then give simple proofs that fractional Brownian motion does not hit points in the critical dimension, and that it does not have double points in the critical dimension. These facts were already known, but our proofs are quite simple and use some ideas of Levy.

Mathematical Competitions In Hungary: Promoting A Tradition Of Excellence & Creativity, Julianna Connelly Stockton Jan 2012

Mathematical Competitions In Hungary: Promoting A Tradition Of Excellence & Creativity, Julianna Connelly Stockton

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Hungary has long been known for its outstanding production of mathematical talent. Extracurricular programs such as camps and competitions form a strong foundation within the Hungarian tradition. New types of competitions in recent years include team competitions, multiple choice competitions, and some exclusively for students who are not in a special mathematics class. This study explores some of the recent developments in Hungarian mathematics competitions and the potential implications these changes have for the very competition-driven system that currently exists. The founding of so many new competitions reflects a possible shift in the focus and purpose of competitions away from …

Abelian Groups With Partial Decomposition Bases In LΔ∞Ω, Part Ii, Carol Jacoby, Peter Loth Jan 2012

Abelian Groups With Partial Decomposition Bases In LΔ∞Ω, Part Ii, Carol Jacoby, Peter Loth

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider abelian groups with partial decomposition bases in Lδ∞ω for ordinals δ. Jacoby, Leistner, Loth and Str¨ungmann developed a numerical invariant deduced from the classical global Warfield invariant and proved that if two groups have identical modified Warfield invariants and Ulm-Kaplansky invariants up to ωδ for some ordinal δ, then they are equivalent in Lδ∞ω. Here we prove that the modified Warfield invariant is expressible in Lδ∞ω and hence the converse is true for appropriate δ.

Finite Factors Of Bernoulli Schemes And Distinguishing Labelings Of Directed Graphs, Andrew Lazowski, Stephen M. Shea Jan 2012

Finite Factors Of Bernoulli Schemes And Distinguishing Labelings Of Directed Graphs, Andrew Lazowski, Stephen M. Shea

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A labeling of a graph is a function from the vertices of the graph to some finite set. In 1996, Albertson and Collins defined distinguishing labelings of undirected graphs. Their definition easily extends to directed graphs. Let G be a directed graph associated to the k -block presentation of a Bernoulli scheme X . We determine the automorphism group of G , and thus the distinguishing labelings of G . A labeling of G defines a finite factor of X . We define demarcating labelings and prove that demarcating labelings define finitarily Markovian finite factors of X . We use …

Composition Operators On A Class Of Analytic Function Spaces Related To Brennan's Conjecture, Valentin Matache, Wayne Smith Jan 2012

Composition Operators On A Class Of Analytic Function Spaces Related To Brennan's Conjecture, Valentin Matache, Wayne Smith

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Brennan’s conjecture in univalent function theory states that if τ is any analytic univalent transform of the open unit disk D onto a simply connected domain G and −1/3 < p < 1, then 1/(τ′) p belongs to the Hilbert Bergman space of all analytic square integrable functions with respect to the area measure. We introduce a class of analytic function spaces L2a(μp) on G and prove that Brennan’s conjecture is equivalent to the existence of compact composition operators on these spaces for every simply connected domain G and all p∈(−1/3,1) . Motivated by this result, we study the boundedness and compactness of composition operators in this setting.

On A Pair Of Identities From Ramanujan's Lost Notebook, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills Jan 2012

On A Pair Of Identities From Ramanujan's Lost Notebook, James Mclaughlin, Andrew Sills

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Using a pair of two variable series-product identities recorded by Ramanujan in the lost notebook as inspiration, we find some new identities of similar type. Each identity immediately implies an infinite family of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, some of which are well-known identities from the literature. We also use these identities to derive some general identities for integer partitions.

A Reciprocity Relation For Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Peter Zimmer Jan 2012

A Reciprocity Relation For Wp-Bailey Pairs, James Mclaughlin, Peter Zimmer

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We derive a new general transformation for WP-Bailey pairs by considering the a certain limiting case of a WP-Bailey chain previously found by the authors, and examine several consequences of this new transformation. These consequences include new summation formulae involving WP-Bailey pairs. Other consequences include new proofs of some classical identities due to Jacobi, Ramanujan and others, and indeed extend these identities to identities involving particular specializations of arbitrary WP-Bailey pairs.

A Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher-Type Formula For (R,S)-Regular Partitions, James Mclaughlin, Scott Parsell

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Let pr,s(n) denote the number of partitions of a positive integer n into parts containing no multiples of r or s, where r > 1 and s > 1 are square-free, relatively prime integers. We use classical methods to derive a Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher-type infinite series for pr,s(n).

Numerical Ranges Of Composition Operators With Inner Symbols, Valentin Matache Jan 2012

Numerical Ranges Of Composition Operators With Inner Symbols, Valentin Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Operators on function paces acting by composition to the right with a fixed self-map φ of some set are called composition operators with the symbol φ. In this paper, composition operators on the Hilbert Hardy space over the unit disk are considered. The numerical ranges of composition operators with inner symbol of parabolic automorphic type of hyperbolic type are shown to be circular.

A Meshless Numerical Solution Of The Family Of Generalized Fifth-Order Korteweg-De Vries Equations, Syed Tauseef Mohyud-Din, Elham Negahdary, Muhammad Usman

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this paper we present a numerical solution of a family of generalized fifth-order Korteweg-de Vries equations using a meshless method of lines. This method uses radial basis functions for spatial derivatives and Runge-Kutta method as a time integrator. This method exhibits high accuracy as seen from the comparison with the exact solutions.

A Leggett-Williams Type Theorem Applied To A Fourth Order Problem, Richard Avery, Paul Eloe, Johnny Henderson Jan 2012

A Leggett-Williams Type Theorem Applied To A Fourth Order Problem, Richard Avery, Paul Eloe, Johnny Henderson

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We apply an extension of a Leggett-Williams type fixed point theorem to a two-point boundary value problem for a fourth order ordinary differential equation. The fixed point theorem employs concave and convex functionals defined on a cone in a Banach spstce. Inequalities that extend the notion of concavity to fourth order differential inequalities are derived and employed to provide the necessary estimates. Symmetry is employed in the construction of the appropriate Banach space.

Bounded Solutions Of Almost Linear Volterra Equations, Muhammad Islam, Youssef Raffoul Jan 2012

Bounded Solutions Of Almost Linear Volterra Equations, Muhammad Islam, Youssef Raffoul

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Fixed point theorem of Krasnosel’skii is used as the primary mathematical tool to study the boundedness of solutions of certain Volterra type equations. These equations are studied under a set of assumptions on the functions involved in the equations. The equations will be called almost linear when these assumptions hold.

Abelian Groups With Partial Decomposition Bases In LΔ∞Ω, Part I, Carol Jacoby, Katrin Leistner, Peter Loth, Lutz Strungmann Jan 2012

Abelian Groups With Partial Decomposition Bases In LΔ∞Ω, Part I, Carol Jacoby, Katrin Leistner, Peter Loth, Lutz Strungmann

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider the class of abelian groups possessing partial decomposition bases in Lδ∞ω for δ an ordinal. This class contains the class of Warfield groups which are direct summands of simply presented groups or, alternatively, are abelian groups possessing a nice decomposition basis with simply presented cokernel. We prove a classification theorem using numerical invariants that are deduced from the classical Ulm-Kaplansky and Warfield invariants. This extends earlier work by Barwise-Eklof, Göbel and the authors.

A Note On Acoustic Propagation In Power-Law Fluids: Compact Kinks, Mild Discontinuities, And A Connection To Finite-Scale Theory, Dongming Wei Jan 2012

A Note On Acoustic Propagation In Power-Law Fluids: Compact Kinks, Mild Discontinuities, And A Connection To Finite-Scale Theory, Dongming Wei

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Acoustic traveling waves in a class of viscous, power-lawfluids are investigated. Both bi-directional and unidirectional versions of the one-dimensional (1D), weakly-nonlinear equation of motion are derived; traveling wave solutions (TWS)s, special cases of which take the form of compact and algebraic kinks, are determined; and the impact of the bulk viscosity on the structure/nature of the kinks is examined. Most significantly, we point out a connection that exists between the power-law model considered here and the recently introduced theory of finite-scale equations.

Infinitary Equivalence Of Zp- Modules With Nice Decomposition Bases, Rüdiger Göbel, Katrin Leistner, Peter Loth, Lutz Strüngmann Oct 2011

Infinitary Equivalence Of Zp- Modules With Nice Decomposition Bases, Rüdiger Göbel, Katrin Leistner, Peter Loth, Lutz Strüngmann

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Warfield modules are direct summands of simply presented Zp - modules, or, alternatively, are Zp - modules possessing a nice decomposition basis with simply presented cokernel. They have been classified up to isomorphism by theor Ilm-Kaplansky and Warfield invariants. Taking a model theoretic point of view and using infinitary languages we give here a complete theoretic characterization of a large class of Zp - modules having a nice decomposition basis. As a corollary, we obtain the classical classification of countable Warfield modules. This generalizes results by Barwise and Eklof.

This talk gives a background on the Operation Comics series, which integrates mathematics into a comic book storyline, as an example of how creativity is not exclusive to the traditional arts, like music and dance, but is a vital part of math, science, and engineering.

A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh Sep 2011

A New Undergraduate Curriculum On Mathematical Biology At University Of Dayton, Muhammad Usman, Amit Singh

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The beginning of modern science is marked by efforts of pioneers to understand the natural world using a quantitative approach. As Galileo wrote, "the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics". The traditional undergraduate course curriculum is heavily focused on individual disciplines like biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics rather than interdisciplinary courses. This fragmented teaching of sciences in majority of universities leave biology outside the quantitative and mathematical approaches. The landscape of biomedical science has transformed dramatically with advances in high throughput experimental approaches, which led to the huge amount of data. The best possible approach to generate …

The Graph Distance Game, Wayne Goddard, Anne Sinko, Peter J. Slater, Honghai Xu Jun 2011

The Graph Distance Game, Wayne Goddard, Anne Sinko, Peter J. Slater, Honghai Xu

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In the graph distance game, two players alternate in constructing a maximal path. The objective function is the distance between the two endpoints of the path, which one player tries to maximize and the other tries to minimize. In this note, we examine the distance game for various graphs, and provide general bounds, exact results for special graphs, and an algorithm for trees. Computer calculations suggest interesting conjectures for grids.

“Drawing” Upon Your Students’ Creativity: Teaching (Your Subject Here) With Comic Books, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

During Spring 2009, Dr. Kessler created and published a comic book series that embedded math content into the story for 4th-6th grade students. The comics were well received in the classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary. Dr. Kessler contends that this approach to teaching and learning can be used in any content area, and is useful for engaging students who might not be as interested otherwise. This session will explore ways of utilizing the skills of your students to construct learning comics in your classes, regardless of the funds, technology, and artistic experience at your disposal. The session will include a …

Wavelet-Based Analysis Of Neutron-Induced Photon Spectral Data, Bruce Kessler, Alexander Barzilov, Phillip Womble Apr 2011

Wavelet-Based Analysis Of Neutron-Induced Photon Spectral Data, Bruce Kessler, Alexander Barzilov, Phillip Womble

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Neutron-based methods of non-destructive inter- rogation of objects for the purpose of their characterization are well-established techniques, employed in the field of bulk material analysis, contraband detection, unexploded ordnance, etc. The characteristic gamma rays produced in nuclear reactions initiated by neutrons in the volume of the irradiated object (inelastic neutron scattering, thermal neutron capture, and activation) are used for the elemental identification. In many real-world applications, an automated spectral analysis is needed, and many algorithms are used for that purpose. The Applied Physics Institute at Western Kentucky University has recently started to employ a mathematical spectrum analysis technique based on …

A Primer On Chaos And Fractals, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This is a prelude to a performance of the play "Arcadia" exclusively for the science and math majors of Lipscomb University. One of the main characters of the story is a mathematical genius, and has realized the power and limitations of iterations in generating mathematical models and structures, although she is living in the early 1800's. This talk gives an introduction to the ideas of chaos theory, fractals, and randomness.
