Impartial Avoidance And Achievement Games For Generating Symmetric And Alternating Groups, Bret J. Benesh, Dana C. Ernst, Nándor Sieben
Impartial Avoidance And Achievement Games For Generating Symmetric And Alternating Groups, Bret J. Benesh, Dana C. Ernst, Nándor Sieben
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Anderson and Harary introduced two impartial games on finite groups. Both games are played by two players who alternately select previously unselected elements of a finite group. The first player who builds a generating set from the jointly-selected elements wins the first game. The first player who cannot select an element without building a generating set loses the second game. We determine the nim-numbers, and therefore the outcomes, of these games for symmetric and alternating groups.
Upper And Lower Solution Method For Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Samerah Al Mosa, Paul W. Eloe
Upper And Lower Solution Method For Boundary Value Problems At Resonance, Samerah Al Mosa, Paul W. Eloe
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We consider two simple boundary value problems at resonance for an ordinary differential equation. Employing a shift argument, a regular fixed point operator is constructed. We employ the monotone method coupled with a method of upper and lower solutions and obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions of boundary value problems at resonance for nonlinear boundary value problems. Three applications are presented in which explicit upper solutions and lower solutions are exhibited for the first boundary value problem. Two applications are presented for the second boundary value problem. Of interest, the upper and lower solutions are easily and explicitly …

On The Dimension Of Algebraic-Geometric Trace Codes, Phong Le, Sunil Chetty
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study trace codes induced from codes defined by an algebraic curve X. We determine conditions on X which admit a formula for the dimension of such a trace code. Central to our work are several dimension reducing methods for the underlying functions spaces associated to X.
Uniform Stability In Nonlinear Infinite Delay Volterra Integro-Differential Equations Using Lyapunov Functionals, Youssef Raffoul, Habib Rai
Uniform Stability In Nonlinear Infinite Delay Volterra Integro-Differential Equations Using Lyapunov Functionals, Youssef Raffoul, Habib Rai
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In [10] the first author used Lyapunov functionals and studied the exponential stability of the zero solution of nite delay Volterra Integro-dierential equation. In this paper, we use modified version of the Lyapunov functional that were used in [10] to obtain criterion for the stability of the zero solution of the infinite delay nonlinear Volterra integro-dierential equation
x′(t) = Px(t) + t∫ −∞ C(t, s)g(x(s))ds.

General Multi-Sum Transformations And Some Implications, James Mclaughlin
General Multi-Sum Transformations And Some Implications, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We give two general transformations that allows certain quite general basic hypergeometric multi-sums of arbitrary depth (sums that involve an arbitrary sequence {g(k)}), to be reduced to an infinite q-product times a single basic hypergeometric sum. Various applications are given, including summation formulae for some q orthogonal polynomials, and various multisums that are expressible as infinite products.

Coding Strategies, The Choquet Game And Domain Representability, Lynne Yengulalp
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We prove that if the NONEMPTY player has a winning strategy in the strong Choquet game on a regular space X then NONEMPTY has a winning coding strategy in that game (a strategy that only depends on the previous 2 moves). We also prove that any regular domain representable space is generalized subcompact.

Asymptotically Periodic Solutions Of Volterra Integral Equations, Muhammad Islam
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study the existence of asymptotically periodic solutions of a nonlinear Volterra integral equation. In the process, we obtain the existence of periodic solutions of an associated nonlinear integral equation with infinite delay. Schauder's fixed point theorem is used in the analysis.

Systems Perturbation Analysis Of A Large-Scale Signal Transduction Model Reveals Potentially Influential Candidates For Cancer Therapeutics, Bhanwar L. Puniya, Laura Allen, Colleen Hochfelder, Mahbubul Majumder, Tomáš Helikar
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Dysregulation in signal transduction pathways can lead to a variety of complex disorders, including cancer. Computational approaches such as network analysis are important tools to understand system dynamics as well as to identify critical components that could be further explored as therapeutic targets. Here, we performed perturbation analysis of a large-scale signal transduction model in extracellular environments that stimulate cell death, growth, motility, and quiescence. Each of the model’s components was perturbed under both loss-of-function and gain-of-function mutations. Using 1,300 simulations under both types of perturbations across various extracellular conditions, we identified the most and least influential components based on …
A Note On The Γ-Coefficients Of The Tree Eulerian Polynomial, Rafael S. González D'León
A Note On The Γ-Coefficients Of The Tree Eulerian Polynomial, Rafael S. González D'León
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We consider the generating polynomial of the number of rooted trees on the set {1,2,...,n} counted by the number of descending edges (a parent with a greater label than a child). This polynomial is an extension of the descent generating polynomial of the set of permutations of a totally ordered n-set, known as the Eulerian polynomial. We show how this extension shares some of the properties of the classical one. A classical product formula shows that this polynomial factors completely over the integers. From this product formula it can be concluded that this polynomial has positive coefficients …
Impartial Avoidance Games For Generating Finite Groups, Bret J. Benesh, Dana C. Ernst, Nándor Sieben
Impartial Avoidance Games For Generating Finite Groups, Bret J. Benesh, Dana C. Ernst, Nándor Sieben
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study an impartial avoidance game introduced by Anderson and Harary. The game is played by two players who alternately select previously unselected elements of a finite group. The first player who cannot select an element without making the set of jointly-selected elements into a generating set for the group loses the game. We develop criteria on the maximal subgroups that determine the nim-numbers of these games and use our criteria to study our game for several families of groups, including nilpotent, sporadic, and symmetric groups.

Identifying An M-Ary Partition Identity Through An M-Ary Tree, Timothy B. Flower, Shannon R. Lockard
Identifying An M-Ary Partition Identity Through An M-Ary Tree, Timothy B. Flower, Shannon R. Lockard
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The Calkin-Wilf tree is well-known as one way to enumerate the rationals, but also may be used to count hyperbinary partitions of an integer, h2(n). We present an m-ary tree which is a generalization of the Calkin-Wilf tree and show how it may be used to count the hyper m-ary partitions of an integer, hm(n). We then use properties of the m-ary tree to prove an identity relating values of h2 to values of hm, showing that one sequence is a subsequence of the other. Finally, …
Arithmetic Local Constants For Abelian Varieties With Extra Endomorphisms, Sunil Chetty
Arithmetic Local Constants For Abelian Varieties With Extra Endomorphisms, Sunil Chetty
Mathematics Faculty Publications
This work generalizes the theory of arithmetic local constants, introduced by Mazur and Rubin, to better address abelian varieties with a larger endomorphism ring than ℤ. We then study the growth of the p∞- Selmer rank of our abelian variety, and we address the problem of extending the results of Mazur and Rubin to dihedral towers k ⊂ K ⊂ F in which [F : K] is not a p-power extension.
Sphere Representations, Stacked Polytopes, And The Colin De Verdière Number Of A Graph, Lon Mitchell, Lynne Yengulalp
Sphere Representations, Stacked Polytopes, And The Colin De Verdière Number Of A Graph, Lon Mitchell, Lynne Yengulalp
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We prove that a k-tree can be viewed as a subgraph of a special type of (k + 1)- tree that corresponds to a stacked polytope and that these “stacked” (k + 1)-trees admit representations by orthogonal spheres in R k+1. As a result, we derive lower bounds for Colin de Verdi`ere’s µ of complements of partial k-trees and prove that µ(G) + µ(G) > |G| − 2 for all chordal G.

Analysis Of Optimal Error Estimates And Superconvergence Of The Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Convection-Diffusion Problems In One Space Dimension, Mahboub Baccouch, Helmi Temimi
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we study the convergence and superconvergence properties of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for a linear convection-diffusion problem in one-dimensional setting. We prove that the DG solution and its derivative exhibit optimal O(hp+1) and O(hp) convergence rates in the L 2 -norm, respectively, when p-degree piecewise polynomials with p ≥ 1 are used. We further prove that the p-degree DG solution and its derivative are O(h2p) superconvergent at the downwind and upwind points, respectively. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the theoretical rates are optimal and that the DG …
Characterization Of Completely K-Magic Regular Graphs, Arnold A. Eniego, Ian June L. Garces
Characterization Of Completely K-Magic Regular Graphs, Arnold A. Eniego, Ian June L. Garces
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Let k ∈ N and c ∈ Zk. A graph G is said to be c-sum k-magic if there is a labeling ` : E(G) → Zk \ {0} such that P u∈N(v) `(uv) ≡ c (mod k) for every vertex v of G, where N(v) is the neighborhood of v in G. We say that G is completely k-magic whenever it is c-sum k-magic for every c ∈ Zk. In this paper, we characterize all completely k-magic regular graphs.

A Model For Spheroid Versus Monolayer Response Of Sk-N-Sh Neuroblastoma Cells To Treatment With 15-Deoxy-Pgj2, Dorothy I. Wallace, Ann Dunham, Paula X. Chen, Michelle Chen, Milan Huynh, Evan Rheingold, Olivia F. Prosper
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Researchers have observed that response of tumor cells to treatment varies depending on whether the cells are grown in monolayer, as in vitro spheroids or in vivo. This study uses data from the literature on monolayer treatment of SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells with 15-deoxy-PGJ2 and couples it with data on growth rates for untreated SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cells grown as multicellular spheroids. A linear model is constructed for untreated and treated monolayer data sets, which is tuned to growth, death, and cell cycle data for the monolayer case for both control and treatment with 15-deoxy-PGJ2. The monolayer …
Analysis Of A Posteriori Error Estimates Of The Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations, Mahboub Baccouch
Analysis Of A Posteriori Error Estimates Of The Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations, Mahboub Baccouch
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We develop and analyze a new residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The a posteriori DG error estimator under investigation is computationally simple, efficient, and asymptotically exact. It is obtained by solving a local residual problem with no boundary condition on each element. We first prove that the DG solution exhibits an optimal O(hp+1) convergence rate in the L2-norm when p-degree piece-wise polynomials with p ≥1 are used. We further prove that the DG solution is O(h2p+1) superconvergent at the downwind points. We …
The Spruce Budworm And Forest: A Qualitative Comparison Of Ode And Boolean Models, Raina Robeva, David Murrugarra
The Spruce Budworm And Forest: A Qualitative Comparison Of Ode And Boolean Models, Raina Robeva, David Murrugarra
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Boolean and polynomial models of biological systems have emerged recently as viable companions to differential equations models. It is not immediately clear however whether such models are capable of capturing the multi-stable behaviour of certain biological systems: this behaviour is often sensitive to changes in the values of the model parameters, while Boolean and polynomial models are qualitative in nature. In the past few years, Boolean models of gene regulatory systems have been shown to capture multi-stability at the molecular level, confirming that such models can be used to obtain information about the system’s qualitative dynamics when precise information regarding …
The Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method For Ordinary Differential Equations, Mahboub Baccouch
The Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method For Ordinary Differential Equations, Mahboub Baccouch
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We present an analysis of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We prove that the DG solution is $(p + 1) $th order convergent in the $L^2$-norm, when the space of piecewise polynomials of degree $p$ is used. A $ (2p+1) $th order superconvergence rate of the DG approximation at the downwind point of each element is obtained under quasi-uniform meshes. Moreover, we prove that the DG solution is superconvergent with order $p+2$ to a particular projection of the exact solution. The superconvergence results are used to show that the leading term of …
Refinements Of Some Partition Inequalities, James Mclaughlin
Refinements Of Some Partition Inequalities, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In the present paper we initiate the study of a certain kind of partition inequality, by showing, for example, that if M ≥ 5 is an integer and the integers a and b are relatively prime to M and satisfy 1 ≤ a < b < M/2, and the c(m, n) are defined by 1 (sqa, sqM−a; qM)∞ − 1 (sqb , sqM−b ; qM)∞ := X m,n≥0 c(m, n)s mq n , then c(m, Mn) ≥ 0 for all integers m ≥ 0, n ≥ 0. A similar result is proved for the integers d(m, n) defined by (−sqa , −sqM−a ; q M)∞ − (−sqb , −sqM−b ; q M)∞ := X m,n≥0 d(m, n)s mq n . In each case there are obvious interpretations in terms of integer partitions. For example, if p1,5(m, n) (respectively p2,5(m, n)) denotes the number of partitions of n into exactly m parts ≡ ±1( mod 5) (respectively ≡ ±2( mod 5)), then for each integer n ≥ 1, p1,5(m, 5n) ≥ p2,5(m, 5n), 1 ≤ m ≤ 5n.

Operators on function spaces of form... is a fixed map are called composition operators with symbol φ. We study such operators acting on the Hilbert Hardy space over the right half-plane and characterize the situations when they are invertible, Fredholm, unitary, and Hermitian. We determine the normal composition operators with inner, respectively with Möbius symbol. In select cases, we calculate their spectra, essential spectra, and numerical ranges.

Existence Of Periodic Solutions For A Quantum Volterra Equation, Muhammad Islam, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer
Existence Of Periodic Solutions For A Quantum Volterra Equation, Muhammad Islam, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The objective of this paper is to study the periodicity properties of functions that arise in quantum calculus, which has been emerging as an important branch of mathematics due to its various applications in physics and other related fields. The paper has two components. First, a relation between two existing periodicity notions is established. Second, the existence of periodic solutions of a q-Volterra integral equation, which is a general integral form of a first order q-difference equation, is obtained. At the end, some examples are provided. These examples show the effectiveness of the relation between the two periodicity notions that …

Positive Solutions For A Singular Fourth Order Nonlocal Boundary Value Problem, John M. Davis, Paul W. Eloe, John R. Graef, Johnny Henderson
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Positive solutions are obtained for the fourth order nonlocal boundary value problem, u(4)=f(x,u), 0 < x < 1, u(0) = u''(0) = u'(1) = u''(1) - u''(2/3)=0, where f(x,u) is singular at x = 0, x=1, y=0, and may be singular at y=∞. The solutions are shown to exist at fixed points for an operator that is decreasing with respect to a cone.

Almost Automorphic Solutions Of Delayed Neutral Dynamic Systems On Hybrid Domains, Murat Adıvar, Halis Can Koyuncuoğlu, Youssef Raffoul
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study the existence of almost automorphic solutions of the delayed neutral dynamic system on hybrid domains that are additively periodic. We use exponential dichotomy and prove uniqueness of projector of exponential dichotomy to obtain some limit results leading to sufficient conditions for existence of almost automorphic solutions to neutral system. Unlike the existing literature we prove our existence results without assuming boundedness of the coefficient matrices in the system. Hence, we significantly improve the results in the existing literature. Finally, we also provide an existence result for an almost periodic solutions of the system.
