A Deep Learning Approach To Uncertainty Quantification, Mst Afroja Akter
A Deep Learning Approach To Uncertainty Quantification, Mst Afroja Akter
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this thesis we consider ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with random parameters. We focus on Monte Carlo (MC) sampling for computing the statistics of some quantities of interest (QoIs) given by the solution of the ODE problems. We use the 4th order accurate Runge-Kutta (RK4) method as the deterministic ODE solver. We then develop a hybrid MC sampling method that combines RK4 with neural network models to efficiently compute the statistics of QoIs within a desired accuracy. We present several numerical examples to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed hybrid method compared to classical MC sampling. The hybrid …
L^{\Infty}-Estimates Of The Solution Of The Navier-Stokes Equations For Periodic Initial Data, Santosh Pathak
L^{\Infty}-Estimates Of The Solution Of The Navier-Stokes Equations For Periodic Initial Data, Santosh Pathak
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this doctoral dissertation, we consider the Cauchy problem for the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Here, we are interested in a smooth periodic solution of the problem which happens to be a special case of a paper by Otto Kreiss and Jens Lorenz. More precisely, we will look into a special case of their paper by two approaches. In the first approach, we will try to follow the similar techniques as in the original paper for smooth periodic solution. Because of the involvement of the Fourier expansion in the process, we encounter with some intriguing factors in the periodic case …
Control Theory: The Double Pendulum Inverted On A Cart, Ian J P Crowe-Wright
Control Theory: The Double Pendulum Inverted On A Cart, Ian J P Crowe-Wright
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this thesis the Double Pendulum Inverted on a Cart (DPIC) system is modeled using the Euler-Lagrange equation for the chosen Lagrangian, giving a second-order nonlinear system. This system can be approximated by a linear first-order system in which linear control theory can be used. The important definitions and theorems of linear control theory are stated and proved to allow them to be utilized on a linear version of the DPIC system. Controllability and eigenvalue placement for the linear system are shown using MATLAB. Linear Optimal control theory is likewise explained in this section and its uses are applied to …
The Compensation For Few Clusters In Clustered Randomized Trials With Binary Outcomes, Lily Stalter
The Compensation For Few Clusters In Clustered Randomized Trials With Binary Outcomes, Lily Stalter
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Cluster randomized trials are increasingly popular in epidemiological and medical research. When analyzing the data from such studies it is imperative that the hierarchical structure of the data be taken into account. Multilevel logistic regression is used to analyze clustered data with binary outcomes. Previous literature shows that a greater number of clusters is more important than a large number of subjects per cluster. This paper investigates if it is possible to compensate for the increased bias found for parameter estimates when the number of clusters is decreased. A simulation study was conducted where the absolute percent relative bias for …
Quantitative Validation Of Simulated Sea Ice Displacements, Bryan R. Mccormick
Quantitative Validation Of Simulated Sea Ice Displacements, Bryan R. Mccormick
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Accurate simulations of Arctic sea ice are important for forecasting as well as for understanding the global climate. However, quantitative measures for simulation displacements are underutilized. We present five such measures proposed as being useful in the validation of simulated sea ice displacements. Using drifting buoy and satellite measurements of sea ice motion as observation, we apply the metrics in a comparison of observed displacements and predicted displacements from the Arctic sea ice simulation MPM\_ice. We find the metric scores are useful for comparing simulations and observations. The metrics also brought to light problems in the simulation MPM_ice, demonstrating their …
Weighted Inequalities For Dyadic Operators Over Spaces Of Homogeneous Type, David Edward Weirich
Weighted Inequalities For Dyadic Operators Over Spaces Of Homogeneous Type, David Edward Weirich
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
A so-called space of homogeneous type is a set equipped with a quasi-metric and a doubling measure. We give a survey of results spanning the last few decades concerning the geometric properties of such spaces, culminating in the description of a system of dyadic cubes in this setting whose properties mirror the more familiar dyadic lattices in R^n . We then use these cubes to prove a result pertaining to weighted inequality theory over such spaces. We develop a general method for extending Bellman function type arguments from the real line to spaces of homogeneous type. Finally, we uses this …
Which Factors Influence Student Success In Intermediate Algebra, Math 101-102-103?, Linh T. Ward
Which Factors Influence Student Success In Intermediate Algebra, Math 101-102-103?, Linh T. Ward
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
At The University of New Mexico (UNM), Intermediate Algebra (MATH 120 and MATH 101-102-103) has historically been a so-called “killer course”, with very low pass rates: approximately 40% in Fall 2009 to Spring 2011 and about 50% from Fall 2011 to Spring 2013. Furthermore, many students failed the class multiple times. Since 2013, a computer system called ALEKS has been used to teach the course and, along with some additional interventions, on Albuquerque/Main campus success rates for MATH 101 have increased to roughly 80% and MATH 102 to about 70%. This thesis provides a strategy to identify those 20-30% as-risk …
Trace Formulas For Perturbations Of Operators With Hilbert-Schmidt Resolvents, Bishnu Prasad Sedai
Trace Formulas For Perturbations Of Operators With Hilbert-Schmidt Resolvents, Bishnu Prasad Sedai
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this dissertation, we study Taylor approximations of functions of operators with Hilbert-Schmidt resolvents. We obtain integral representations for traces of the respective Taylor remainders that are analogous to trace formulas obtained in the case of Schatten perturbations in [10, 11, 16].
High Order Hermite And Sobolev Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Adeline Kornelus
High Order Hermite And Sobolev Discontinuous Galerkin Methods For Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations, Adeline Kornelus
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Many real-world problems involving dynamics of solid or fluid bodies can be modeled by hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Up to this point, only solutions to selected PDEs are available. Many PDEs are physically or geometrically complex, resulting in difficulties computing the analytical solutions. In this thesis, we focus on numerical methods for approximating solutions to hyperbolic PDEs. Long-term simulation for the motion of the body described by the PDE requires a method that is not only robust and efficient, but also produces small error because the error will be propagated and accumulated over the course of the simulation. Therefore, …
Comparison Of Two Methods In Estimating Standard Error Of Simulated Moments Estimators For Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Danielle K. Duran
Comparison Of Two Methods In Estimating Standard Error Of Simulated Moments Estimators For Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Danielle K. Duran
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
We consider standard error of the method of simulated moment (MSM) estimator for generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). Parametric bootstrap (PB) has been used to estimate the covariance matrix, in which we use the estimates to generate the simulated moments. To avoid the bias introduced by estimating the parameters and to deal with the correlated observations, (Lu, 2012) proposed a multi-stage block nonparametric bootstrap to estimate the standard errors. In this research, we compare PB and nonparametric bootstrap methods (NPB) in estimating the standard errors of MSM estimators for GLMM. Simulation results show that when the group size is large, …
Optimal Experimental Design To Characterize A Wave Source Using Dosimeter Measurements, Renee L. Gooding
Optimal Experimental Design To Characterize A Wave Source Using Dosimeter Measurements, Renee L. Gooding
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
When modeling physical phenomena we want to solve the inverse problem by estimating the parameters that characterize the source model that we are interested in. In this thesis, we focus on the optimal placement of a finite number of individual sensors, called dosimeters, in two and three dimensions with a time dependent Gaussian wave source. Using a computational model along with experimental data, we design an iterative process to determine the optimal placement of an additional sensor such that the noise in the measurements has a minimal effect on the parameter estimation. First, we estimate the parameters that characterize the …
Deterministic And Probabilistic Methods For Seismic Source Inversion, Juan Pablo Madrigal Cianci
Deterministic And Probabilistic Methods For Seismic Source Inversion, Juan Pablo Madrigal Cianci
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The national Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) reports an occurrence of about 13,000 earthquakes every year, spanning different values on the Richter scale from very mild (2) to "giant earthquakes'' (8 and above). Being able to study these earthquakes provides useful information for a wide range of applications in geophysics. In the present work we study the characteristics of an earthquake by performing seismic source inversion; a mathematical problem that, given some recorded data, produces a set of parameters that when used as input in a mathematical model for the earthquake generates synthetic data that closely resembles the measured data. There …
Cancer Modeling: From Optimal Cell Renewal To Immunotherapy, Cesar L. Alvarado
Cancer Modeling: From Optimal Cell Renewal To Immunotherapy, Cesar L. Alvarado
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Cancer is a disease caused by mutations in normal cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2016, an estimated 1.6 million people were diagnosed and approximately 0.5 million people died from the disease in the United States. There are many factors that shape cancer at the cellular and organismal level, including genetic, immunological, and environmental components. In this thesis, we show how mathematical modeling can be used to provide insight into some of the key mechanisms underlying cancer dynamics. First, we use mathematical modeling to investigate optimal homeostatic cell renewal in tissues such as the small intestine with an …
Modeling Trait Evolutionary Processes With More Than One Gene, Huan Jiang
Modeling Trait Evolutionary Processes With More Than One Gene, Huan Jiang
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Phylogenetic comparative methods have been used to test evolutionary signals through trait evolutionary processes. Traditionally, biologists use one phylogenetic tree as a tool to handle dependent data for the traits of interest and hence utilize one gene only. However, it is more informative if the evolutionary processes of a trait are presented by phylogenetic trees reconstructed by the DNA alignments from more than one gene. In this work, we explain and develop two methods involving modeling the trait evolutionary processes: (a) two gene trees via the Brownian motion (BM) model; and (b) two gene trees via the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) model. …
The Effects Of Different Teaching Methods On Student Attitude And Achievement In Calculus Recitations, Jocelyn Noelle Rios
The Effects Of Different Teaching Methods On Student Attitude And Achievement In Calculus Recitations, Jocelyn Noelle Rios
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Many universities offer recitation sections in their calculus sequences; however, little research has been conducted on TA best practices in the recitations. This study first aimed to observe the different teaching methods that TAs employed in their recitations and then measure their efficacy in improving student course attitudes and achievement, focusing on student-centered and concept-based instruction. In addition, this study aimed to assess the quality of professional development offered to recitation leaders. Using a quantitative-dominant mixed methods design, 12 TAs were observed throughout the semester and TAs and calculus students were surveyed. This study found that student-centered instruction was positively correlated …
Mechanistic Plug-And-Play Models For Understanding The Impact Of Control And Climate On Seasonal Dengue Dynamics In Iquitos, Peru, Nathan Levick
Mechanistic Plug-And-Play Models For Understanding The Impact Of Control And Climate On Seasonal Dengue Dynamics In Iquitos, Peru, Nathan Levick
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne multi-serotype disease whose dynamics are not precisely understood despite half of the world’s human population being at risk of infection. A recent dataset of dengue case reports from an isolated Amazonian city— Iquitos, Peru—provides a unique opportunity to assess dengue dynamics in a simpli- fied setting. Ten years of clinical surveillance data reveal a specific pattern: two novel serotypes, in turn, invaded and exclusively dominated incidence over several seasonal cycles, despite limited intra-annual variation in climate conditions. Together with mechanistic mathematical models, these data can provide an improved understand- ing of the nonlinear interactions between …
Data Driven Sample Generator Model With Application To Classification, Alvaro Emilio Ulloa Cerna
Data Driven Sample Generator Model With Application To Classification, Alvaro Emilio Ulloa Cerna
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Despite the rapidly growing interest, progress in the study of relations between physiological abnormalities and mental disorders is hampered by complexity of the human brain and high costs of data collection. The complexity can be captured by machine learning approaches, but they still may require significant amounts of data. In this thesis, we seek to mitigate the latter challenge by developing a data driven sample generator model for the generation of synthetic realistic training data. Our method greatly improves generalization in classification of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls from their structural magnetic resonance images. A feed forward neural network trained …
Per-Contact Infectivity Of Hcv Associated With Injection Exposures In A Prospective Cohort Of Young Injection Drug Users In San Francisco, Ca (Ufo Study), Yuridia Leyva
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Sharing needles and ancillary injection drug equipment places injection drug users (IDU) at risk for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), a highly infectious blood-borne virus. A limited number of studies have analyzed the per-contact infectivity of HCV associated with the use of previously-used needles, but per-contact infectivity of ancillary injecting equipment has not been previously investigated. Our goal is to estimate the per-contact infectivity of HCV associated with (1) injecting with another person's previously-used needle, classified as receptive needle sharing (RNS), and (2) using another person's previously-used ancillary injecting equipment, such as cookers to melt drugs and cottons to strain impurities …
Development Of Scoring Rubrics And Pre-Service Teachers Ability To Validate Mathematical Proofs, Timothy J. Middleton
Development Of Scoring Rubrics And Pre-Service Teachers Ability To Validate Mathematical Proofs, Timothy J. Middleton
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The basic aim of this exploratory research study was to determine if a specific instructional strategy, that of developing scoring rubrics within a collaborative classroom setting, could be used to improve pre-service teachers facility with proofs. During the study, which occurred in a course for secondary mathematics teachers, the primary focus was on creating and implementing a scoring rubric, rather than on direct instruction about proofs. In general, the study had very mixed results. Statistically, the quantitative data indicated no significant improvement occurred in participants' ability to validate proofs. However, the qualitative results and the considerable improvement by some participants …
Transmission Dynamics Of Avian Influenza Among Poultry With And Without Vaccination, Qiao Liang
Transmission Dynamics Of Avian Influenza Among Poultry With And Without Vaccination, Qiao Liang
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The continuing avian influenza (AI) out break that began in late 2003 and early 2004 has been disastrous for the poultry industry worldwide. It has resulted in severe socio-economic damage, and it has raised serious concerns for general public health. In this research, we use mathematics to analyze transmission dynamics of AI among poultry. We use a status-based approach to construct systems of differential equations to describe virus transmission dynamics. We develop theoretical means to eradicate the spread of the disease, and we calculate the size of healthy and infected populations during an AI outbreak, and the final population size …
Numerical Solution Of A Quadratic Matrix Equation, George J. Davis
Numerical Solution Of A Quadratic Matrix Equation, George J. Davis
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This paper is concerned with the efficient numerical solution of the matrix equation AX2 + BX + C =0, where A,B,C and X are all square matrices. Such a matrix X is called a solvent. This matrix equation is very closely related to the problem of finding scalars lambda and nonzero vectors x such that (lambda2A + lambdaB + C)x=0. The latter equation represents a quadratic eigenvalue problem with each lambda and x called an eigenvalue and eigenvector, respectively. Such equations have many important physical applications which we survey.
By presenting an algorithm to calculate solvents, we show how the …
Double Stochastic Integrals, Tsung-Dow Huang
Double Stochastic Integrals, Tsung-Dow Huang
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this paper we study the double stochastic integral or stochastic quadratic form
Q =integreal(integral(phi(x,y)Z(dx)Z(dy) ))
with respect to a Gaussian random spectral measure Z. Letting F be the corresponding spectral distribution function, the kernel function is required to satisfy a) the function phi(x,x) is integrable respect to F and b) phi(x,y) is square integrable with respect to FxF. A definition of Q is given in terms of a carefully constructed sequence of step functions converging to phi. Iterated integral formulae, a discussion of the stochastic contribution to Q due to the diagonal values of phi, and an improvement of …
Stochastic Approximation Procedures For Mixing Stochastic Processes, Katherine Campbell
Stochastic Approximation Procedures For Mixing Stochastic Processes, Katherine Campbell
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Stochastic approximation methods for estimating the parameters of a stationary autoregressive process of finite order are investigated. The emphasis is on robust methods, and the non-linear scoring functions associated with such methods require the development of new techniques for establishing convergence. A mixing condition falling between the traditional strong and uniform mixing conditions is investigated in detail, and used to establish almost sure and mean square convergence of the proposed algorithms when the underlying process satisfies this condition. A short Monte Carlo study verifies the desirable properties of the robust algorithm in the presence of heavy-tailed innovations.

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Let x1, x2,…, xm be a random sample of m failure times under normal conditions with the underlying distribution function F(x) and Y1, Y2,…, Yn be a random sample on n failure times under accelerated conditions with the underlying distribution function G(x):
G(x)=f(F(x))
Where f(x) is the acceleration function.
In this dissertation we propose several estimators for the acceleration function f(x) and investigate their properties.

Conditions on the environmental process (Yn} are given for which transience or recurrence of the random walk (Zn} can be detennined. The probability of n absorption and mean time problems are solved when (Yn} is a finite Markov chain and (Zn} is a classical random walk on …
Nonlinear Resonance In Celestial Mechanics With Applications To The Rotation Of Mercury, Timothy John Burns
Nonlinear Resonance In Celestial Mechanics With Applications To The Rotation Of Mercury, Timothy John Burns
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Two planar, fixed-orbit models of the rotation of the planet Mercury are studied using the method of averaging. The first model includes only the solar torques on the planet's permanent asymmetry and on its solar tidal bulge. For this model, it is shown that the zero of the averaged tidal torque corresponds to an asymptotically stable periodic solution of the second kind which, for two tidal torque representations, is close to the asymptotically stable equilibrium point corresponding to an exact 3:2 spin-orbit resonance. This periodic solution restricts the possible initial rotation states of Mercury, and it may account for the …
Numerical Methods For Multipoint Boundary Value Problems, Mahoud Abdul-Ghani Sarhan
Numerical Methods For Multipoint Boundary Value Problems, Mahoud Abdul-Ghani Sarhan
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Existence and uniqueness theory for ordinary differential systems subject to linear constraints is presented in some detail. Finite difference schemes, shooting methods, orthonormalization procedures and projection methods are studied. Orthonormalization procedures are shown to be ineffective for the general linear problem. Projection methods for linear differential systems with fairly general multipoint boundary conditions are thoroughly developed. Two particular examples of such methods are given: Galerkin and collocation. The various numerical methods considered are evaluated and compared. Several examples are discussed and numerical results are displayed .
A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson
A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
Numerous routines are available to find the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix. Since it is known to converge in exact arithmetic, the tridiagonal QL algorithm with origin shift is widely used. Here we analyze the algorithm in floating-point arithmetic. This analysis suggests two modifications to the EISPACK implementation TQLl that enable one to prove correctness and hence convergence of the routine.
Also, it is known that the implicit and explicit versions of the QL algorithm produce the same results in exact arithmetic. A counter-example to the floating-point analog of this theorem is presented.
The Use Of Prior Observations In Constructing Prediction Intervals For The Normal Distribution, Charles B. Davis
The Use Of Prior Observations In Constructing Prediction Intervals For The Normal Distribution, Charles B. Davis
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
A prediction interval procedure uses information contained in a sample together with other relevant information to produce an interval which will contain the next observation to be taken from the population with confidence no less than a pre-determined /J. One prediction interval procedure renders another "inadmissible" at the fJ level if (1) both procedures maintain the B confidence level and (2) the former produces intervals which are at least as "short" as, and sometimes "shorter" than, those produced by the latter; "short" is defined in a natural fashion in terms of expected length or expected upper (lower) limit. as is …
An Abstract Matrix Model: The Column Model, Tomas Eufracio Salazar
An Abstract Matrix Model: The Column Model, Tomas Eufracio Salazar
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this dissertation we introduce an abstract model for matrix theory, The Column Model. We investigate some properties of the special class of partially ordered linear algebras that satisfy the conditions of the Model. We use the order structure of the Model to obtain some results on: idempotents in the Model, nonnegative elements of the Model having nonnegative generalized inverses, factor theorems in the Model and concepts in the Model that are related to the usual notion of eigenvalues of an m-by-m matrix. Since the set of m-by-m matrices belongs to the special class of partially ordered linear algebras satisfying …
