List-Distinguishing Cartesian Products Of Cliques, Michael Ferrara, Zoltan Füredi, Sogol Jahanbekam, Paul Wenger Jul 2017

List-Distinguishing Cartesian Products Of Cliques, Michael Ferrara, Zoltan Füredi, Sogol Jahanbekam, Paul Wenger

Faculty Publications

The distinguishing number of a graph G, denoted D(G), is the minimum number of colors needed to produce a coloring of the vertices of G so that every nontrivial isomorphism interchanges vertices of different colors. A list assignment L on a graph G is a function that assigns each vertex of G a set of colors. An L-coloring of G is a coloring in which each vertex is colored with a color from L(v). The list distinguishing number of G, denoted Dℓ(G) is the minimum k such that every list assignment L that assigns a list of size at least …

Conquering Worrisome Word Problems – Algebra Success, Vicki-Lynn Holmes, Karla Spence, Jane Finn, Shelia Mcgee Ingram, Libbey Horton

Faculty Publications

High school students can struggle with word problems in upper level math classes. Causes for this struggle could include lower reading comprehension, limited mathematic vocabulary, and difficulty changing words to algebraic expressions. This article proposes three techniques to help teachers instruct these struggling students that include (a) organization by difficulty of comprehension and computation (b) scaffolding and (c) utilizing the Explain, Practice and Assess (EPA) strategy.

Periodic Traveling Interfacial Hydroelastic Waves With Or Without Mass, Benjamin F. Akers, David M. Ambrose, David W. Sulon Apr 2017

Periodic Traveling Interfacial Hydroelastic Waves With Or Without Mass, Benjamin F. Akers, David M. Ambrose, David W. Sulon

Faculty Publications

We study the motion of an interface between two irrotational, incompressible fluids, with elastic bending forces present; this is the hydroelastic wave problem. We prove a global bifurcation theorem for the existence of families of spatially periodic traveling waves on infinite depth. Our traveling wave formulation uses a parameterized curve, in which the waves are able to have multi-valued height. This formulation and the presence of the elastic bending terms allows for the application of an abstract global bifurcation theorem of "identity plus compact" type. We furthermore perform numerical computations of these families of traveling waves, finding that, depending on …

Classification Of Rectifying Space-Like Submanifolds In Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces, Bang Yen Chan, Yun Myung Oh Mar 2017

Classification Of Rectifying Space-Like Submanifolds In Pseudo-Euclidean Spaces, Bang Yen Chan, Yun Myung Oh

Faculty Publications

The notions of rectifying subspaces and of rectifying submanifolds were introduced in [B.-Y. Chen, Int. Electron. J. Geom 9 (2016), no. 2, 1–8]. More precisely, a submanifold in a Euclidean m-space Em is called a rectifying submanifold if its position vector field always lies in its rectifying subspace. Several fundamental properties and classification of rectifying submanifolds in Euclidean space were obtained in [B.-Y. Chen, op. cit.]. In this present article, we extend the results in [B.-Y. Chen, op. cit.] to rectifying space- like submanifolds in a pseudo-Euclidean space with arbitrary codimension. In particular, we completely classify all rectifying space-like submanifolds …

Spectrally Similar Incommensurable 3-Manifolds, David Futer, Christian Millichap Jan 2017

Spectrally Similar Incommensurable 3-Manifolds, David Futer, Christian Millichap

Faculty Publications

Reid has asked whether hyperbolic manifolds with the same geodesic length spectrum must be commensurable. Building toward a negative answer to this question, we construct examples of hyperbolic 3–manifolds that share an arbitrarily large portion of the length spectrum but are not commensurable. More precisely, for every n ≫ 0, we construct a pair of incommensurable hyperbolic 3–manifolds Nn and Nµn whose volume is approximately n and whose length spectra agree up to length n.

Both Nn and Nµn are built by gluing two standard submanifolds along a complicated pseudo-Anosov map, ensuring that …

Mutations And Short Geodesics In Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Christian Millichap Jan 2017

Mutations And Short Geodesics In Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds, Christian Millichap

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we explicitly construct large classes of incommensurable hyperbolic knot complements with the same volume and the same initial (complex) length spectrum. Furthermore, we show that these knot complements are the only knot complements in their respective commensurability classes by analyzing their cusp shapes.

The knot complements in each class differ by a topological cut-and-paste operation known as mutation. Ruberman has shown that mutations of hyperelliptic surfaces inside hyperbolic 3-manifolds preserve volume. Here, we provide geometric and topological conditions under which such mutations also preserve the initial (complex) length spectrum. This work requires us to analyze when least …

Polynomial Particular Solutions For Solving Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, Thir R. Dangal, Ching-Shyang Chen, Ji Lin Jan 2017

Polynomial Particular Solutions For Solving Elliptic Partial Differential Equations, Thir R. Dangal, Ching-Shyang Chen, Ji Lin

Faculty Publications

In the past, polynomial particular solutions have been obtained for certain types of partial differential operators without convection terms. In this paper, a closed-form particular solution for more general partial differential operators with constant coefficients has been derived for polynomial basis functions. The newly derived particular solution is further coupled with the method of particular solutions (MPS) for numerically solving a large class of elliptic partial differential equations. In contrast to the use of Chebyshev polynomial basis functions, the proposed approach is more flexible in selecting the collocation points inside the domain. The polynomial basis functions are well-known for yielding …

Integrals Of Frullani Type And The Method Of Brackets, Sergio Bravo, Ivan Gonzalez, Karen T. Kohl, Victor H. Moll Jan 2017

Integrals Of Frullani Type And The Method Of Brackets, Sergio Bravo, Ivan Gonzalez, Karen T. Kohl, Victor H. Moll

Faculty Publications

The method of brackets is a collection of heuristic rules, some of which have being made rigorous, that provide a flexible, direct method for the evaluation of definite integrals. The present work uses this method to establish classical formulas due to Frullani which provide values of a specific family of integrals. Some generalizations are established.

Characterization Of Rectifying And Sphere Curves In R^3, Yun Myung Oh, Julie Logan Jan 2017

Characterization Of Rectifying And Sphere Curves In R^3, Yun Myung Oh, Julie Logan

Faculty Publications

Studies of curves in 3D-space have been developed by many geometers and it is known that any regular curve in 3D space is completely determined by its curvature and torsion, up to position. Many results have been found to characterize various types of space curves in terms of conditions on the ratio of torsion to curvature. Under an extracondition on the constant curvature, Y.L. Seo and Y. M. Oh found the series solution when the ratio of torsion to curvature is a linear function. Furthermore, this solution is known to be a rectifying curve by B. Y. Chen’s work. This …

A Continuous Time Model Of Centrally Controlled Motion With Random Switching Terms, J. C. Dallon, L C. Despain, E J. Evans, C P. Grant, Willaim V. Smith

Faculty Publications

This paper considers differential problems with random switching, with specific applications to the motion of cells and centrally coordinated motion. Starting with a differential-equation model of cell motion that was proposed previously, we set the relaxation time to zero and consider the simpler model that results. We prove that this model is well-posed, in the sense that it corresponds to a pure jump-type continuous time Markov process (without explosion). We then describe the model's long-time behavior, first by specifying an attracting steady-state distribution for a projection of the model, then by examining the expected location of the cell center when …

Error Analysis Of An Hdg Method For A Distributed Optimal, Huiqing Zhu, Fatih Celiker Dec 2016

Error Analysis Of An Hdg Method For A Distributed Optimal, Huiqing Zhu, Fatih Celiker

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a priori error analysis of a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for a distributed optimal control problem governed by diffusion equations. The error estimates are established based on the projection-based approach recently used to analyze these methods for the diffusion equation. We proved that for approximations of degree k on conforming meshes, the orders of convergence of the approximation to fluxes and scalar variables are k+1 when the local stabilization parameter is suitably chosen.

A General Elliptic Nonlinear System Of Multiple Functions With Application, Timothy Robertson, Joon Hyuk Kang Nov 2016

A General Elliptic Nonlinear System Of Multiple Functions With Application, Timothy Robertson, Joon Hyuk Kang

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to give a sufficient condition for the existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of positive solutions to a rather general type of elliptic system of the Dirichlet problem on a bounded domain Ω in Rn . We also investigate the effects of perturbation on the positive solutions to the system. The techniques used in this paper are upper-lower solutions, eigenvalues of operators, the maximum principles and spectrum estimates. The arguments also rely on some detailed properties for the solution of logistic equations. This result yields an algebraically computable criterion for the positive coexistence of competing species …

"

Despite high tuberculosis (TB) treatment success rate, treatment adherence is one of the major obstacles to tuberculosis control in Kenya. Our objective was to identify patient-related factors that were associated with time to TB treatment interruption and the geographic distribution of the risk of treatment interruption by county. Data of new and retreatment patients registered in TIBU, a Kenyan national case-based electronic data recording system, between 2013 and 2014 was obtained. Kaplan-Meier curves and log rank tests were used to assess the adherence patterns. Mixed-effects Cox proportional hazards modeling was used for multivariate analysis. Records from 90,170 patients were …

Solving Fredholm Integral Equations Via A Piecewise Linear Maximum Entropy Method, Congming Jin, Jiu Ding Oct 2016

Solving Fredholm Integral Equations Via A Piecewise Linear Maximum Entropy Method, Congming Jin, Jiu Ding

Faculty Publications

We propose a piecewise linear approximation method, based on the maximum entropy principle, to approximate a nonnegative solution of a Fredholm integral equation numerically. The theoretical analysis and numerical examples show that our method has a convergence rate of order 2, and it can get more accurate approximations with more moments used without ill-condition of the classic maximum entropy approach. The method can also be applied to solve Fredholm integral equations with singular kernels.

Recurrence Relations For Orthogonal Polynomials For Pdes In Polar And Cylindrical Geometrics, Megan Richardson, James V. Lambers Sep 2016

Recurrence Relations For Orthogonal Polynomials For Pdes In Polar And Cylindrical Geometrics, Megan Richardson, James V. Lambers

Faculty Publications

This paper introduces two families of orthogonal polynomials on the interval (−1,1), with weight function w(x)=1. The first family satisfies the boundary condition p(1)=0, and the second one satisfies the boundary conditions p(-1)=p(1)=0. These boundary conditions arise naturally from PDEs defined on a disk with Dirichlet boundary conditions and the requirement of regularity in Cartesian coordinates. The families of orthogonal polynomials are obtained by orthogonalizing short linear combinations of Legendre polynomials that satisfy the same boundary conditions. Then, the three-term recurrence relations are derived. Finally, it is shown that from these recurrence relations, one can …

Hydrodynamic Theories For Flows Of Active Liquid Crystals And The Generalized Onsager Principle, Xiaogang Yang, Jun Li, M. Gregory Forest, Qi Wang May 2016

Hydrodynamic Theories For Flows Of Active Liquid Crystals And The Generalized Onsager Principle, Xiaogang Yang, Jun Li, M. Gregory Forest, Qi Wang

Faculty Publications

We articulate and apply the generalized Onsager principle to derive transport equations for active liquid crystals in a fixed domain as well as in a free surface domain adjacent to a passive fluid matrix. The Onsager principle ensures fundamental variational structure of the models as well as dissipative properties of the passive component in the models, irrespective of the choice of scale (kinetic to continuum) and of the physical potentials. Many popular models for passive and active liquid crystals in a fixed domain subject to consistent boundary conditions at solid walls, as well as active liquid crystals in a free …

Hidden Symmetries And Commensurability Of 2-Bridge Link Complements, Christian Millichap, William Worden Jan 2016

Hidden Symmetries And Commensurability Of 2-Bridge Link Complements, Christian Millichap, William Worden

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we show that any nonarithmetic hyperbolic 2-bridge link complement admits no hidden symmetries. As a corollary, we conclude that a hyperbolic 2-bridge link complement cannot irregularly cover a hyperbolic 3-manifold. By combining this corollary with the work of Boileau and Weidmann, we obtain a characterization of 3-manifolds with nontrivial JSJ-decomposition and rank-two fundamental groups. We also show that the only commensurable hyperbolic 2-bridge link complements are the figure-eight knot complement and the 622 link complement. Our work requires a careful analysis of the tilings of R2 that come from lifting the canonical triangulations of …

A Cacciopoli-Type Inequality To Prove Coercivity Of A Bilinear Form Associated With Spatial Hysteresis Internal Damping For An Euler-Bernoulli Beam, Bernd S.W. SchrÖder, Jonathan B. Walters, Katie A. Evans Jan 2016

Evans

Faculty Publications

We prove an inequality that resembles Cacciopoli inequalities in that it bounds the norm of the derivative of a function by using the norm of the function. Unlike in Cacciopoli inequalities, there is no restriction on the function, a fact made up for by adding an extra term to the norm of the function. The inequality arose in the proof that a bilinear form associated with spatial hysteresis internal damping for an Euler-Bernoulli beam is coercive.

The Prominence Of Affect In Creativity: Expanding The Conception Of Creativity In Mathematical Problem Solving, Eric L. Mann, Scott A. Chamberlin, Amy K. Graefe

Faculty Publications

Constructs such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration have been accepted as integral components of creativity. In this chapter, the authors discuss affect (Leder GC, Pehkonen E, Törner G (eds), Beliefs: a hidden variable in mathematics education? Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, 2002; McLeod DB, J Res Math Educ 25:637–647, 1994; McLeod DB, Adams VM, Affect and mathematical problem solving: a new perspective. Springer, New York, 1989) as it relates to the production of creative outcomes in mathematical problem solving episodes. The saliency of affect in creativity cannot be underestimated, as problem solvers require an appropriate state of mind in order …

Biological Control Via "Ecological" Damping: An Approach That Attenuates Non-Target Effects, Rana D. Parshad, Kelly Black, Emmanuel Quansah, Matthew Beauregard

Faculty Publications

In this work we develop and analyze a mathematical model of biological control to prevent or attenuate the explosive increase of an invasive species population in a three-species food chain. We allow for finite time blowup in the model as a mathematical construct to mimic the explosive increase in population, enabling the species to reach “disastrous” levels, in a finite time. We next propose various controls to drive down the invasive population growth and, in certain cases, eliminate blow-up. The controls avoid chemical treatments and/or natural enemy introduction, thus eliminating various non-target effects associated with such classical methods. We refer …

The Relaxed Edge-Coloring Game And K-Degenerate Graphs, Charles Dunn, David Morawski, Jennifer Firkins Nordstrom Jan 2015

The Relaxed Edge-Coloring Game And K-Degenerate Graphs, Charles Dunn, David Morawski, Jennifer Firkins Nordstrom

Faculty Publications

The (r, d)-relaxed edge-coloring game is a two-player game using r colors played on the edge set of a graph G. We consider this game on forests and more generally, on k-degenerate graphs. If F is a forest with ∆(F) = ∆, then the first player, Alice, has a winning strategy for this game with r = ∆ − j and d ≥ 2j + 2 for 0 ≤ j ≤ ∆ − 1. This both improves and generalizes the result for trees in [10]. More broadly, we generalize the main result in [10] …
