The minimum cardinality of a double dominating set of G is the double domination number. A set S of vertices in a graph G = (V, E) is a locating-dominating set if S is a dominating set of G, and every pair of distinct vertices {u, v} in V - S is located with respect to S, that is, if the set of neighbors of u that are in S is not equal to the set of neighbors of v that are in S. We give a construction of trees that have unique minimum locating-dominating sets.

We examine an early model for the interaction of HIV with CD4+ T cells in vivo and define possible parameters and effects of said parameters on the model. We then examine a newer, more simplified model for the interaction of HIV with CD4+ T cells that also considers four populations: uninfected T cells, latently infected T cells, actively infected T cells, and free virus. The stability of both the disease free steady state and the endemically infected steady state are examined utilizing standard methods and the Routh-Hurwitz criteria. We examine results concerning the generation of primes in certain types of integer sequences. The sequences discussed all have a connection in that each satisfies a recurrence relation. Mathematicians have speculated over many centuries that these sequences contain an infinite number of prime terms, however no proof has been given as such. We examine a less direct method of showing an infinitude of primes in each sequence by showing that the sequences contain an infinite number of terms with primitive divisors.

The performance of lasercom systems operating in the atmosphere is reduced by optical turbulence, which causes irradiance fluctuations in the received signal. The result is a randomly fading signal. Fade statistics for lasercom systems are determined from the probability density function (PDF) of the irradiance fluctuations. The expected number of fades per second and their mean fade time require the joint PDF of the fluctuating irradiance and its time derivative. Theoretical integral expressions, as well as closed form, analytical approximations, were developed for the joint PDF of a gamma-gamma distributed irradiance and its time derivative, and the corresponding expression for …

In this work, two differential equation models for smallpox are numerically solved to find the optimal intervention policy. In each model we look for the range of values of the parameters that give rise to the worst case scenarios. Since the scale of an epidemic is determined by the number of people infected, and eventually dead, as a result of infection, we attempt to quantify the scale of the epidemic and recommend the optimum intervention policy. The purpose of this paper is to examine the interactions between two plant species endemic to Florida and develop a model for the growth of one of the plant species. An equation for the growth of Hypericum cumulicola is developed through analyzing how the distance to and the height of the nearest Ceratiola ericoides (Florida rosemary) affects the growth of Hypericum cumulicola. The hypericums were separated into five separate regions according to the distance to the nearest rosemary plant. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) belongs to a class of biologically-motivated approaches to computing that includes such metaheuristics as artificial neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and artificial immune systems, among others. Emulating to varying degrees the particular biological phenomena from which their inspiration is drawn, these alternative computational systems have succeeded in finding solutions to complex problems that had heretofore eluded more traditional techniques. Often, the resulting algorithm bears little resemblance to its biological progenitor, evolving instead into a mathematical abstraction of a singularly useful quality of the phenomenon. In survival analysis, proportional hazards model is the most commonly used and the Cox model is the most popular. These models are developed to facilitate statistical analysis frequently encountered in medical research or reliability studies. In analyzing real data sets, checking the validity of the model assumptions is a key component. In an attempt to mitigate the effects of the atmosphere on the coherence of an optical (laser) beam, interest has recently been shown in changing the beam shape to determine if a different power distribution at the transmitter will reduce the effects of the random fluctuations in the refractive index. Malaria is a vector borne disease that has been plaguing mankind since before recorded history. The disease is carried by three subspecies of mosquitoes Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestu. These mosquitoes carry one of four type of Plasmodium specifically: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae or P. ovale. For adaptive optic systems, the use of aperture filter functions calculated using various Zernike modes can be useful in removing lower-order aberrations caused by atmospheric turbulence. Traditionally, these filter functions are calculated using the step function depicting a hard aperture that introduces integrals that are sometimes difficult to integrate and must be done numerically. The Gaussian method can be used in place of the conventional method for calculating the aperture filter functions. Scintillation is one of the most common statistics in the literature of mathematical modeling of laser propagation through random media. One approach to estimating scintillation is through the Rytov approximation, which is limited to weak atmospheric turbulence. Voice authentication is an alternative security application to the other biometric security measures such as the use of fingerprints or iris scans. A study on phase synchronization in large populations of nonlinear dynamical systems is presented in this thesis. Using the well-known Rossler system as a prototypical model, phase synchronization in one oscillator with periodic external forcing and in two-coupled nonidentical oscillators was explored at first. The study was further extended to consider three-dimensional lattices and globally coupled populations of nonidentical oscillators, in which the mathematical formulation that represents phase synchronization in the generalized N-coupled Rossler system was derived and several computer programs that perform numerical simulations were developed. We allow for the introduction or removal of material in a gaseous state at the ends of the tube. The material diffuses throughout the tube with or without reaction with other materials. In this paper, we review existing classification techniques and suggest an entirely new procedure for the classification of high-dimensional vectors on the basis of a few training samples. The proposed method is based on the Bayesian paradigm and provides posterior probabilities that a new vector belongs to each of the classes, therefore it adapts naturally to any number of classes. Our classification technique is based on a small vector which is related to the projection of the observation onto the space spanned by the training samples. The dissertation considers construction of confidence intervals for a cumulative distribution function F(z) and its inverse at some fixed points z and u on the basis of an i.i.d. sample where the sample size is relatively small. The sample is modeled as having the flexible Generalized Gamma distribution with all three parameters being unknown. This approach can be viewed as an alternative to nonparametric techniques which do not specify distribution of X and lead to less efficient procedures. The Hellmann-Feynman theorem is presented together with certain allied theorems. The origin of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem in quantum physical chemistry is described. The theorem is stated with proof and with discussion of applicability and reliability. Some adaptations of the theorem to the study of the variation of zeros of special functions and orthogonal polynomials are surveyed. Possible extensions are discussed.

Sequences are sufficient to describe topological properties in metric spaces or, more generally, topological spaces having a countable base for the topology. However, filters or nets are needed in more abstract spaces. Nets are more natural extension of sequences but are generally less friendly to work with since quite often two nets have distinct directed sets for domains. Operations involving filters are set theoretic and generally certain to filters on the same set. The concept of a filter was introduced by H. Cartan in 1937 and an excellent treatment of the subject can be found in N. Bourbaki (1940).

MacMahon's Master Theorem is an important result in the theory of algebraic combinatorics. It gives a precise connection between coefficients of certain power series defined by linear relations. This paper presents analytic expressions for the wave structure function, frequency spread of the temporal frequency spectrum, and the temporal frequency spectrum of optical signals propagating through a random medium, specifically the Earth’s atmosphere. The results are believed to be valid for all optical turbulence conditions. These expressions are developed using the Rytov approximation method. Generally, the validity of statistical quantities obtained via this method is restricted to conditions of weak optical turbulence. A measure of concordance, $\kappa$, is of polynomial type if and only if $\kappa (tA+(1-t)B)$ is a polynomial in $t$ where $A$ and $B$ are 2-copulas. The degree of such a type of measure of concordance is simply the highest degree of the polynomial associated with $\kappa$. In previous work [2], [3], properties of measures of concordance preserving convex sums (equivalently measures of concordance of polynomial type degree one) were established; however, a characterization was not made. Hypergeometric type functions have a long list of applications in the field of sciences. A brief history is given of Hypergeometric functions including some of their applications. A development of a new method for finding asymptotic formulas for large arguments is given. This new method is applied to Bessel functions. Results are compared with previously known methods.
