Assessing The Impact Of A Computer-Based College Algebra Course, Ningjun Ye

Dissertations

USM piloted the Math Zone in Spring 2007, a computer-based program in teaching MAT 101and MAT 099 in order to improve student performance. This research determined the effect of the re-design of MAT 101 on student achievements in comparison to a traditional approach to the same course. Meanwhile, the study investigated possible effects of the Math Zone program on students’ attitude toward studying mathematics.

This study shows that there was no statistically significant difference on MAT101 final exam scores between the Math Zone students and the Classroom students in Fall 2007, Spring 2008 and Fall 2008. At the same time, …

Perturbed Spherical Objects In Acoustic And Fluid Flow Fields, Manmeet Kaur Jan 2010

Perturbed Spherical Objects In Acoustic And Fluid Flow Fields, Manmeet Kaur

Dissertations

In this study, the time averaged acoustic radiation force and drag on a small, nearly spherical object suspended freely in a stationary sound wave field in a compressible, low viscosity fluid is to be calculated. This problem has been solved for a spherical object, and it has many important engineering applications related to segregation and separation processes for particles in fluids such as water. Small but significant errors have occurred in the predicted behavior of the particles using the existing approximate solutions based on perfect spheres. The classical approach has been extended in this research to objects that deviate slightly …

Modeling And Quasi-Monte Carlo Simulation Of Risk In Credit Portfolios, Bo Ren Jan 2010

Modeling And Quasi-Monte Carlo Simulation Of Risk In Credit Portfolios, Bo Ren

Dissertations

Credit risk is the risk of losing contractually obligated cash flows promised by a counterparty such as a corporation, financial institution, or government due to default on its debt obligations. The need for accurate pricing and hedging of complex credit derivatives and for active management of large credit portfolios calls for an accurate assessment of the risk inherent in the underlying credit portfolios. An important challenge for modeling a credit portfolio is to capture the correlations within the credit portfolio. For very large and homogeneous portfolios, analytic and semi-analytic approaches can be used to derive limiting distributions. However, for portfolios …

Nonlinear Evolution Of Annular Layers And Liquid Threads In Electric Fields, Qiming Wang Jan 2010

Nonlinear Evolution Of Annular Layers And Liquid Threads In Electric Fields, Qiming Wang

Dissertations

The nonlinear dynamics of viscous perfectly conducting liquid jets or threads under the action of a radial electric field are studied theoretically and numerically here. The field is generated by a potential difference between the jet surface and a concentrically placed electrode of given radius. A long-wave nonlinear model that is used to predict the dynamics of the system and in particular to address the effect of the radial electric field on jet breakup is developed, Two canonical regimes are identified that depend on the size of the gap between the outer electrode and the unperturbed jet surface. For relatively …

The Multilevel Structures Of Nurbs And Nurblets On Intervals, Weiwei Zhu Sep 2009

The Multilevel Structures Of Nurbs And Nurblets On Intervals, Weiwei Zhu

Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with the problem of constructing biorthogonal wavelets based on non-uniform rational cubic B-Splines on intervals. We call non-uniform rational B-Splines ``NURBs", and such biorthogonal wavelets ``NURBlets". Constructing NURBlets is useful in designing and representing an arbitrary shape of an object in the industry, especially when exactness of the shape is critical such as the shape of an aircraft. As we know presently most popular wavelet models in the industry are approximated at boundaries. In this dissertation a new model is presented that is well suited for generating arbitrary shapes in the industry with mathematical exactness throughout …

Reduced Order Models For Fluid-Structure Interaction Systems By Mixed Finite Element Formulation, Ye Yang Aug 2009

Reduced Order Models For Fluid-Structure Interaction Systems By Mixed Finite Element Formulation, Ye Yang

Dissertations

In this work, mixed finite element formulations are introduced for acoustoelastic fluid- structure interaction (FSI) systems. For acoustic fluid, in addition to displacement- pressure (u/p) mixed formulation, a three-field formulation, namely, displacement-pressure-vorticity moment formulation (u - p -Λ) is employed to eliminate some zero frequencies. This formulation is introduced in order to compute the coupled frequencies without the contamination of nonphysical spurious non-zero frequencies. Furthermore, gravitational forces are introduced to include the coupled sloshing mode. In addition, u/p mixed formulation is the first time employed in solid. The numerical examples will demonstrate that the mixed formulations are capable of predicted …

Self Similar Flows In Finite Or Infinite Two Dimensional Geometries, Leonardo Xavier Espin Estevez May 2009

Self Similar Flows In Finite Or Infinite Two Dimensional Geometries, Leonardo Xavier Espin Estevez

Dissertations

This study is concerned with several problems related to self-similar flows in pulsating channels. Exact or similarity solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are of practical and theoretical importance in fluid mechanics. The assumption of self-similarity of the solutions is a very attractive one from both a theoretical and a practical point of view. It allows us to greatly simplify the Navier-Stokes equations into a single nonlinear one-dimensional partial differential equation (or ordinary differential equation in the case of steady flow) whose solutions are also exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the sense that no approximations are required in order …

Discreet Dynamical Population Models : Higher Dimensional Pioneer-Climax Models, Yogesh Joshi May 2009

Discreet Dynamical Population Models : Higher Dimensional Pioneer-Climax Models, Yogesh Joshi

Dissertations

There are many population models in the literature for both continuous and discrete systems. This investigation begins with a general discrete model that subsumes almost all of the discrete population models currently in use. Some results related to the existence of fixed points are proved. Before launching into a mathematical analysis of the primary discrete dynamical model investigated in this dissertation, the basic elements of the model - pioneer and climax species - are described and discussed from an ecological as well as a dynamical systems perspective. An attempt is made to explain why the chosen hierarchical form of the …

Numerical Detection Of Complex Singularities In Two And Three Dimensions, Kamyar Malakuti May 2009

Numerical Detection Of Complex Singularities In Two And Three Dimensions, Kamyar Malakuti

Dissertations

Singularities often occur in solutions to partial differential equations; important examples include the formation of shock fronts in hyperbolic equations and self-focusing type blow up in nonlinear parabolic equations. Information about formation and structure of singularities can have significant role in interfacial fluid dynamics such as Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and Hele-Shaw flow. In this thesis, we present a new method for the numerical analysis of complex singularities in solutions to partial differential equations. In the method, we analyze the decay of Fourier coefficients using a numerical form fit to ascertain the nature of singularities in two and three-dimensional functions. …

Loss Of Synchrony In An Inhibitory Network Of Type-I Oscillators, Myongkeun Oh Jan 2009

Loss Of Synchrony In An Inhibitory Network Of Type-I Oscillators, Myongkeun Oh

Dissertations

Synchronization of excitable cells coupled by reciprocal inhibition is a topic of significant interest due to the important role that inhibitory synaptic interaction plays in the generation and regulation of coherent rhythmic activity in a variety of neural systems. While recent work revealed the synchronizing influence of inhibitory coupling on the dynamics of many networks, it is known that strong coupling can destabilize phase-locked firing. Here we examine the loss of synchrony caused by an increase in inhibitory coupling in networks of type-I Morris-Lecar model oscillators, which is characterized by a period-doubling cascade and leads to mode-locked states with alternation …

Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product And Its Impact On Mastery Of Geometry Concepts, Donaldson Williams Jan 2009

Empirical Development Of An Instructional Product And Its Impact On Mastery Of Geometry Concepts, Donaldson Williams

Dissertations

Problem

Relatively poor levels of mathematical thinking among American school children have been identified as a major issue over the past half century. Many efforts have been made to increase the mathematics performance of children in schools. Additionally, out-of-school-time programs have attempted to address this issue as well. Holistic development is one of the distinguishing features of Seventh-day Adventist instructional programs. Yet, as of 2007, the Pathfinder program, an informal educational program operated by the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist church, had no instructional product designed to foster participants’ cognitive development in mathematics. This study focused on the empirical development of an …

High School Mathematics Teachers' Evolving Understanding Of Comparing Distributions, Sandra R. Madden Dec 2008

High School Mathematics Teachers' Evolving Understanding Of Comparing Distributions, Sandra R. Madden

Dissertations

Statistics has achieved a position of status in the secondary curriculum (College Board, 2006b; Franklin et al., 2007; NCTM, 2000) and understanding of statistics is essential for high school mathematics teachers if they are to engage students in thoughtful pursuit of statistical ideas. High school teachers typically are ill-prepared in the area of statistics (Ben-Zvi & Garfield, 2004a; CBMS, 2001; Shaughnessy, 1992, 2007). Using methods of design research, this study investigated 56 high school mathematics teachers' understanding of the statistical concept ofcomparing distributions and demonstrated that a modest four-day, statistics-oriented, technology-rich, professional development program may significantly improve teachers' understanding. …

On The Rolling Motion Of Viscous Fluid On A Rigid Surface, Xinli Wang Aug 2008

On The Rolling Motion Of Viscous Fluid On A Rigid Surface, Xinli Wang

Dissertations

This thesis considers two closely related problems. First, the influence of insoluble surfactant at a moving contact line is considered. This work is mostly motivated by the air entrainment during the coating process where there is a three-phase contact point (e.g., air, liquid and solid). For moving contact line problems, when the fluid is assumed to be an incompressible Newtonian fluid and a no-slip boundary condition is enforced at the solid boundary, the non-integrable stress singularity arises at the contact line, which is physically unrealistic. The contact angle of 180° is considered as a special case in which the singularity …

A Mathematical And Computational Exploration Of The Effect Of The A-Current In Determining The Activity Phase Of Follower Neurons, Yu Zhang Aug 2008

A Mathematical And Computational Exploration Of The Effect Of The A-Current In Determining The Activity Phase Of Follower Neurons, Yu Zhang

Dissertations

Bursting oscillations are prevalent in neurons of central pattern generators (CPGs) that produce rhythmic motor activity, and the activity phase plays an important role in determining the normal or dysfunctional network output. The activity phase is the delay time-with respect to some reference time in each cycle and normalized by the oscillation cycle period-of the onset of action potentials by a neuron. This dissertation investigates how the A-current, in conjunction with other intrinsic properties, sets the activity phase of a neuron driven by inhibition.

This dissertation is divided into two major components. In the first component, methods of dynamical systems …

Understanding Similarity: Bridging Geometric And Numeric Contexts For Proportional Reasoning, Dana Christine Cox Aug 2008

Understanding Similarity: Bridging Geometric And Numeric Contexts For Proportional Reasoning, Dana Christine Cox

Dissertations

The concept of similarity is uniquely situated at the crossroads of geometric and numerical proportional reasoning. Although studies have documented the existence and nature of student difficulties with this topic, there exists a gap between documented visual insights of younger children and the quantitative inadequacies of older ones. Using a revised version of the Similarity Perception Test followed by 21 clinical interviews, this study investigated the visual and analytical strategies that are used by middle-school students to differentiate and construct similar figures.

New strategies for construction and differentiation were identified, and three overarching conclusions were drawn from the work. First, …

The Role Of Short Term Synamptic Plasticity In Temporal Coding Of Neuronal Networks, Lakshmi Chandrasekaran May 2008

The Role Of Short Term Synamptic Plasticity In Temporal Coding Of Neuronal Networks, Lakshmi Chandrasekaran

Dissertations

Short term synaptic plasticity is a phenomenon which is commonly found in the central nervous system. It could contribute to functions of signal processing namely, temporal integration and coincidence detection by modulating the input synaptic strength. This dissertation has two parts. First we study the effects of short term synaptic plasticity in enhancing coincidence detecting ability of neurons in the avian auditory brainstem. Coincidence detection means a target neuron has a higher firing rate when it receives simultaneous inputs from different neurons as opposed to inputs with large phase delays. This property is used by birds in sound localization. When …

Roles Of Gap Junctions In Neuronal Networks, Joon Ha May 2008

Roles Of Gap Junctions In Neuronal Networks, Joon Ha

Dissertations

This dissertation studies the roles of gap junctions in the dynamics of neuronal networks in three distinct problems. First, we study the circumstances under which a network of excitable cells coupled by gap junctions exhibits sustained activity. We investigate how network connectivity and refractory length affect the sustainment of activity in an abstract network. Second, we build a mathematical model for gap junctionally coupled cables to understand the voltage response along the cables as a function of cable diameter. For the coupled cables, as cable diameter increases, the electrotonic distance decreases, which cause the voltage to attenuate less, but the …

Instabilities Of Volatile Films And Drops, Nebojsa Murisic May 2008

Instabilities Of Volatile Films And Drops, Nebojsa Murisic

Dissertations

We report on instabilities during spreading of volatile liquids, with emphasis on the novel instability observed when isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is deposited on a monocrystalline silicon (Si) wafer. This instability is characterized by emission of drops ahead of the expanding front, with each drop followed by smaller, satellite droplets, forming the structures which we nickname “octopi” due to their appearance. A less volatile liquid, or a substrate of larger heat conductivity, suppress this instability. In addition, we examine the spreading of drops of water (DJW)-JPA mixtures on both Si wafers and plain glass slides, and describe the variety of contact …

Signal Transmission In Epithelial Layers, Filippo Posta May 2008

Signal Transmission In Epithelial Layers, Filippo Posta

Dissertations

Cell signaling is at the basis of many biological processes such as development, tissue repair, and homeostasis. It can be carried out by different mechanisms. Here we are focusing on ligand mediated cell-to-cell signaling in which a molecule (ligand) is free to move into the extra-cellular medium. On the cell layer surface, it can bind to its molecule-specific receptors located on the cell plasma membrane. This mechanism is the subject of many experimental and theoretical studies on many model biological systems, such as the follicular epithelium of the Drosophila egg, which motivates this work.

Here, we present a general mathematical …

The Role Of Prediction In The Teaching And Learning Of Algebra, Lisa Kasmer Apr 2008

The Role Of Prediction In The Teaching And Learning Of Algebra, Lisa Kasmer

Dissertations

Research has shown that including prediction questions within reading and science instruction has been advantageous for students, yet minimal research existed regarding the use of such questions within mathematics instruction. In order to extend and build on our knowledge about the effects of prediction in mathematics instruction, this study explored the impact of this paradigm in the teaching and learning of algebra. Specifically, this study probed whether utilizing prediction questions provided students opportunities for engaging in mathematical thinking, retrieving prior knowledge, and discussing related mathematical ideas, could increase such students' conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning in the content area of …

What Allows Teachers To Extend Student Thinking During Whole-Group Discussions, Nesrin Cengiz Dec 2007

What Allows Teachers To Extend Student Thinking During Whole-Group Discussions, Nesrin Cengiz

Dissertations

Research indicates that extending students' mathematical thinking during whole-group discussions is challenging, even for the most experienced teachers. That is, it is challenging for teachers to help students move beyond their initial mathematical observations and solutions during whole-group discussions. To better understand this phenomena, the teaching of six experienced elementary school teachers, who had been teaching aStandards-based curriculum for several years and had participated in a multi-year professional development project focused on that curriculum, is explored in this study. In particular, two issues are addressed: what it looks like to extend student thinking during whole-group discussions and how …

Measures Of Travers Ability In Graphs, Futaba Okamoto Jun 2007

Measures Of Travers Ability In Graphs, Futaba Okamoto

Dissertations

For a connected graph G of order n ≥ 3 and a cyclic ordering sc : v 1, v2,..., vn, v n+1 = v1 of vertices of G, the number d(sc) is defined by d(sc) = i=1n d(vi, vi +1), where d(vi, vi +1) is the distance between vi and vi+1 in G for 1 ≤ i ≤ n. The Hamiltonian number h(G) and upper Hamiltonian number h +(G) of G are defined as h(G) = min{d(sc)} and h+(G) = max{d(sc)}, respectively, where the minimum and maximum are taken over all cyclic orderings s c of vertices of G. For …

The Fock Space And Related Bergman Type Integral Operators, Ovidiu Furdui Jun 2007

The Fock Space And Related Bergman Type Integral Operators, Ovidiu Furdui

Dissertations

In this thesis we study the boundedness of a general class of integral operators induced by the kernel functions of Fock spaces. More precisely, for a, b, and c real parameters we study the action of [Special characters omitted.] and [Special characters omitted.] on Lp ([Special characters omitted.] ,dvs ), where dvs ( z ) = [Special characters omitted.] is the Gaussian probability measure on [Special characters omitted.] . We prove that, when p > 1, respectively p = 1, these operators are bounded if and only if p satisfies a quadratic, respectively a linear, inequality. The …

Problems Related To Efficacy Measurement And Analyses, Sibabrata Banerjee May 2007

Problems Related To Efficacy Measurement And Analyses, Sibabrata Banerjee

Dissertations

In clinical research it is very common to compare two treatments on the basis of an efficacy variable. More specifically, if X and Y denote the responses of patients on the two treatments A and B, respectively, the quantity P(Y>X) (which can be called the probabilistic index for the Effect Size), is of interest in clinical statistics. The objective of this study is to derive an efficacy measure that would compare two treatments more informatively and objectively compared to the earlier approaches. Kernel density estimation is a useful non-parametric method that has not been well utilized as an applied …

Prediction Of Mrna Polyadenylation Sites In The Human Genome And Mathematical Modeling Of Alternative Polyadenylation, Yiming Cheng May 2007

Prediction Of Mrna Polyadenylation Sites In The Human Genome And Mathematical Modeling Of Alternative Polyadenylation, Yiming Cheng

Dissertations

Messenger RNA (mRNA) polyadenylation plays many important roles in the cell, such as transcription termination, mRNA stability and transportation, and mRNA translation in eukaryotic cells. A large number of human and mouse genes have multiple polyadenylation sites (referred to as poly(A) sites) that lead to variable transcripts, some of which are translated into various protein products with different functions. However, the details about when and where the polyadenylation occurs, and how pre-mRNA switches from one poly(A) site to another are still unknown. This kind of 3 '-end processing can be regulated by the cell environment, cell cycle stage, and tissue …

Modeling Projection Neuron And Neuromodulatory Effects On A Rhythmic Neuronal Network, Nicholas Kintos Jan 2007

Modeling Projection Neuron And Neuromodulatory Effects On A Rhythmic Neuronal Network, Nicholas Kintos

Dissertations

Projection neurons shape the activity of many neural networks. In particular, neuromodulatory substances, which are often released by projection neurons, alter the cellular and/or synaptic properties within a target network. However, neural networks in turn influence projection neuron input via synaptic feedback. This dissertation uses mathematical and biophysically-realistic modeling to investigate these issues in the gastric mill (chewing) motor network of the crab, Cancer borealis. The projection neuron MCN1 elicits a gastric mill rhythm in which the LG neuron and INTl burst in anti-phase due to their reciprocal inhibition. However, bath application of the neuromodulator PK elicits a similar gastric …

Selected Problems Of Inference On Branching Processes And Poisson Shock Model, Satrajit Roychoudhury Aug 2006

Selected Problems Of Inference On Branching Processes And Poisson Shock Model, Satrajit Roychoudhury

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the development of statistical methodology for some problems of branching processes and poisson shock model.

Branching process methods have become extremely popular in recent days. This dissertation mainly explores two fundamental inference problems of Galton-Watson processes. The first problem is concerned with statistical inference regarding the nature of the process. Two methodologies have been developed to develop a statistical test for the null hypothesis that the process is supercritical versus an alternative hypothesis that the process is non-supercritical. Another problem we investigate involves the estimation of the 'age' of a Galton-Watson Process. Three different methods are discussed …

The Effect Of Using A Video-Case Curriculum To Promote Preservice Teachers’ Development Of A Reflective Stance Towards Mathematics Teaching, Shari L. Stockero Aug 2006

The Effect Of Using A Video-Case Curriculum To Promote Preservice Teachers’ Development Of A Reflective Stance Towards Mathematics Teaching, Shari L. Stockero

Dissertations

This study investigates the effects of using a coherent video-case curriculum in a university methods course. In particular, three issues are addressed: (1) howthe use of a video-case curriculum affects the reflective stance of preservice teachers; (2) the extent to which a reflective stance developed while reflecting on other teachers' practice transfers to reflecting on one's own practice; and (3) how preservice teachers' reflective stance that is developed via sustained and focused reflection using a video-case curriculum compares to the reflective stance of peers who engaged in less sustained and focused reflection. Althoughvideo cases are increasingly being used in teacher …

Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods For Regression Splines With A Penalized Acceptance Ratio, David Keith Stamps Jul 2006

Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods For Regression Splines With A Penalized Acceptance Ratio, David Keith Stamps

Dissertations

An increasingly popular method for fitting complex models, particularly with a hierchical structure involvese the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation. Within a Bayesian framework, two major strategies are Gibbs sampling and Metropolis-Hastings methods. Recent research in the area of MCMC methods has witnessed the emergence of modeling efforts which permit the movement of the chain across models of varying dimensions. When properly constructed, such Markov chains converge to the joint posterior distribution of the parameters to be estimated, making Bayesian averaging an attractive option after convergence has occurred. With this transdimensional methodology, the Bayesian averaging process takes place …
