The Closed Topological Vertex Via The Cremona Transform, Jim Bryan, Dagan Karp

We compute the local Gromov-Witten invariants of the "closed vertex", that is, a configuration of three rational curves meeting in a single triple point in a Calabi-Yau threefold. The method is to express the local invariants of the vertex in terms of ordinary Gromov-Witten invariants of a certain blowup of CP^3 and then to compute those invariants via the geometry of the Cremona transformation.

In this paper we establish existence and multiplicity results for a class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations of k-Hessian type with exponential nonlinearity. In particular, we characterize the precise dependence of the multiplicity of solutions with respect to both the space dimension and the value of k. The choice of exponential nonlinearity is motivated by the classical Liouville-Gelfand problem from combustible gas dynamics and prescribed curvature problems.

In the last 10 years, laser-driven fusion experiments performed on atomic clusters of deuterium have shown a surprisingly high neutron yield per joule of input laser energy. Results indicate that the optimal cluster size for maximizing fusion events should be in the 0.01–μm diameter range, but an appropriate source of droplets of this size does not exist. In an attempt to meet this need, we use ultrasonic atomization to generate micron-scale droplet aerosols of high average density, and we have developed and refined a reliable droplet sizing technique based on Mie scattering. We determine several families of so-called Cayley 4-dimensional manifolds in the real Euclidean 8-space. Such manifolds are of interest because Cayley 4-manifolds are supersymmetric cycles that are candidates for representations of fundamental particles in String Theory. Moreover, some of the examples of Cayley manifolds discovered in this paper may be modified to construct explicit examples in our current search for new holomorphic invariants for Calabi-Yau 4-folds and for the further development of mirror symmetry.

Using a class sum and a collection of related Radon transforms, we present a proof G. James’s Kernel Intersection Theorem for the complex unipotent representations of the finite general linear groups. The approachis analogous to that used by F. Scarabotti for a proof of James’s Kernel Intersection Theorem for the symmetric group. In the process, we also show that a single class sum may be used to distinguish between distinct irreducible unipotent representations.

We study the dynamics of dissipation and blow-up in a critical-case unstable thin film equation. The governing equation is a nonlinear fourth-order degenerate parabolic PDE derived from a generalized model for lubrication flows of thin viscous fluid layers on solid surfaces. There is a critical mass for blow-up and a rich set of dynamics including families of similarity solutions for finite-time blow-up and infinite-time spreading. The structure and stability of the steady-states and the compactly-supported similarity solutions is studied.

Using the discrepancy metric, we analyze the rate of convergence of a random walk on the circle generated by d rotations, and establish sharp rates that show that badly approximable d-tuples in Rd give rise to walks with the fastest convergence.

Consensus-Halving Via Theorems Of Borsuk-Ulam And Tucker, Forrest W. Simmons, Francis E. Su

In this paper we show how theorems of Borsuk-Ulam and Tucker can be used to construct a consensus-halving: a division of an object into two portions so that each of n people believes the portions are equal. Moreover, the division takes at most n cuts, which is best possible. This extends prior work using methods from combinatorial topology to solve fair division problems. Several applications of consensus-halving are discussed.

In previous work by Castro, Cossio, and Neuberger [2], it was shown that a superlinear Dirichlet problem has at least three nontrivial solutions when the derivative of the nonlinearity at zero is less than the first eigenvalue of -Δ with zero Dirichlet boundry condition. One of these solutions changes sign exactly-once and the other two are of one sign. In this paper we show that when this derivative is between the k-th and k+1-st eigenvalues there still exists a solution which changes sign at most k times. Recent experimental studies by Diefenbach et al. [1] have brought to light new information about how the immune system of the mouse responds to the presence of a tumor. In the Diefenbach studies, tumor cells are modified to express higher levels of immune stimulating NKG2D ligands. Experimental results show that sufficiently high levels of ligand expression create a significant barrier to tumor establishment in the mouse. Additionally, ligand transduced tumor cells stimulate protective immunity to tumor rechallenge. Based on the results of the Diefenbach experiments, we have developed a mathematical model of tumor growth to address some of the questions …

Quasi P-spaces are defined to be those Tychonoff spaces X such that each prime z-ideal of C(X) is either minimal or maximal. This article is devoted to a systematic study of these spaces, which are an obvious generalization of P-spaces. The compact quasi P-spaces are characterized as the compact spaces which are scattered and of Cantor-Bendixson index no greater than 2. A thorough account of locally compact quasi P-spaces is given. We consider the Dirichlet problem Δu + λu + |u|2*−2u = 0 in Ω, u = 0 on ∂Ω where Ω is a bounded smooth domain in RN, N≥4, and 2* = 2N/(N−2) is the critical Sobolev exponent. We show that if Ω is invariant under an orthogonal involution then, for λ>0 sufficiently small, there is an effect of the equivariant topology of Ω on the number of solutions which change sign exactly once.

When studying convergence of measures, an important issue is the choice of probability metric. We provide a summary and some new results concerning bounds among some important probability metrics/distances that are used by statisticians and probabilists. Knowledge of other metrics can provide a means of deriving bounds for another one in an applied problem. Considering other metrics can also provide alternate insights. We also give examples that show that rates of convergence can strongly depend on the metric chosen. Careful consideration is necessary when choosing a metric.

Bidding For Envy-Freeness: A Procedural Approach To N-Player Fair-Division Problems, Claus-Jochen Haake, Matthias G. Raith, Francis E. Su

We develop a procedure for implementing an efficient and envy-free allocation of m objects among n individuals with the possibility of monetary side-payments, assuming that players have quasi–linear utility functions. The procedure eliminates envy by compensating envious players. It is fully descriptive and says explicitly which compensations should be made, and in what order. Moreover, it is simple enough to be carried out without computer support. We formally characterize the properties of the procedure, show how it establishes envy-freeness with minimal resources, and demonstrate its application to a wide class of fair-division problems.

In this article we provide sufficient conditions for a superlinear Dirichlet problem to have infinitely many nonradial solutions. Our hypotheses do not require the nonlinearity to be an odd function. For the sake of simplicity in the calculations we carry out details of proofs in a ball. However, the proofs go through for any annulus.
