Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Motivated by the stochastic differential equation[see pdf for notation] in [see pdf for notation] we prove a measurable dependence on parameters theorem for ODEs in case f is only continuous in [see pdf for notation] is done by means of a known result about measurable selections of multivalued maps. Afterwards we discuss consequences for stochastic ODEs.
An Elementary Algebraic Method For Approximating Average Radii Of First And Secong Ring Electrons, Donald Greenspan
An Elementary Algebraic Method For Approximating Average Radii Of First And Secong Ring Electrons, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
In this paper, experimental ionization energies are used to determine algebraic equations whose solutions approximate relativistic quantum mechanical estimates of average atomic radii. These algebraic equations are nonlinear and are solved on a digital computer by Newton's method. Pairing is an essential element in the formulation.

We prove existence theorems for nonlinear stochastic Sturmiouville problems which improve results from [4]. In the simplest case this is done by means of a known result about measurable selections of multivalued maps and a new fixed point theorem for stochastic nonlinear operators which is more realistic than existing ones.
Existence And Regularity Theory For Isoperimetric Variational Problems On Orlicz-Sobolev Spaces: A Review, Pierre A. Vuillermot
Existence And Regularity Theory For Isoperimetric Variational Problems On Orlicz-Sobolev Spaces: A Review, Pierre A. Vuillermot
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
In this review article, we outline and discuss our most recent results regarding the existence and the regularity theory for a class of strongly nonlinear eigenvalue problems on Orlicz-Sobolev spaces, with a glance at other contemporary attempts to understand the structure of some strongly nonlinear variational boundary-value problems defined on certain nonreflexive Banach spaces. The class of eigenvalue problems recently investigated can best be defined as follows. With [see pdf for notation] be an open bounded domain with closure -6 and smooth [see pdf for notation] boundary asp; let [see pdf for notation] be a family of [see pdf for …

Interval Estimation Of The Noncentrality Parameter Of A Gamma Distribution, Chien-Pai Han, Paul Chiou
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Asymptotic confidence interval for the noncentrality parameter of a Gamma distribution (or Chi-squared distribution) is derived. An algorithm for computing the maximum likelihood estimator of the non-centrality parameter is developed. A formula for the asymptotic variance of the maximum likelihood estimator is given. From the properties of the maximum likelihood estimator an asymptotic confidence interval is obtained.

[See Pdf For Notation]-Reularity For The Solution Of Strongly Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems On Orlicz-Sobolev Spaces, Pierre A. Vuillermot

We present a new method to prove the [see pdf for notation]-regularity of the eigenfunctions for Dirichlet problems with strictly convex Young functionnonlinearities in their principal part. The basic idea is threefold: we first invoke the topological methods of [12] to infer the existence of a countable infinity of [see pdf for notation]-eigensolutions; we then use Schauder's inversion technique to associate with each one of these eigensolutions a unique [see pdf for notation]-solution of an auxiliary Dirichlet problem; we finally prove the [see pdf for notation]-regularity of the original elgensolutions from the [see pdf for notation]-regularity of the auxiliary solutions, …
Particle Simulation Of Compression Waves, Donald Greenspan
Particle Simulation Of Compression Waves, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Compression waves are studied using a quasi-molecular, particle approach. Explosive type disturbances are simulated to generate such waves, which propagate by the interaction of each particle with its immediate neighbors. Obstacles to wave motions are studied by the introduction of variable densities. Computer examples are described and discussed.
Bargaining Sets With Thresholds, Irinel C. Dragan
Bargaining Sets With Thresholds, Irinel C. Dragan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
A concept of bargaining set for cooperative n person games with side payments has been defined by assuming that a player could be attracted in a new coalition only if his supplementary gain exceeds a fixed threshold and could reject a new coalition only if his loss exceeds another fixed threshold. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the objections with thresholds and for the existence of the counter objections with thresholds associated to couples consisting of a group of players and a coalition structure subjected to some conditions have been proved. These results enabled us to state a …

Computer Studies In Particle Modeling Of Fluid Phenomena, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
A new, numerical approach is developed for modeling fluid phenomena. Unlike the continuum and statistical mechanics approaches, it uses relatively small sets of quasi-molecular particles which interact in accordance with classical, molecular-type formulas. Computer examples are described and discussed, as is the potential for modeling turbulent behavior.

Let [see pdf for notation] be an open bounded domain with closure [see pdf for notation] and smooth boundary [see pdf for notation]. Consider the class of nonlinear boundary-value problems defined by [see pdf for notation] with [see pdf for notation] regular enough,[see pdf for notation] and where [see pdf for notation] denotes Laplacian. If n = 2, it is known that the boundary-value problem (1.1) possesses nontrivial, classical eigensolutions (with appropriate eigenvalues ^) even if ø grows exponentially fasts if n ≥ 3, it is also known that problem (1.1) has, with ^ starshaped, no nontrivial, classical solutions as …
A Discrete Model For The Recovery Of Oil From A Reservoir, Cristobal Vargas-Jarillo
A Discrete Model For The Recovery Of Oil From A Reservoir, Cristobal Vargas-Jarillo
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
In this work we simulate oil recovery by means of a molecular type approach. This means that we consider the solid and liquid materials to be composed of a finite number of particles, which are approximants for molecules. Porous flow is studied qualitatively under the assumption that particles of rock, oil and the flooding flow interact with each other locally by means of a compensating LennardJones type potential and are also under the influence of gravity. Extensive computations are described and discussed in which initial data and parameters are varied. A comparison is made with actual physical experiments.

This is the second of a series of papers devoted to systems of ordinary and partial differential equations with exponential nonlinearities [20], in which we prove the existence of at least a countable infinity of one- parameter families of nontrivial, Hölder continuous solutions for a class of second-order, strongly nonlinear Dirichlet boundary-value problems in two and more dimensions. Let Y be a C(2)-Young function, namely a twice continuously differentiable, even convex lR—valued function on IR such that[see pdf for notation] and[see pdf for notation]. By C(2)-function, we shall mean a function which is twice continuously differentiable everywhere except possibly at …

A new particle-type of modeling is developed for the simulation of phenomena related to the bending of elastic shells. Application is made to the determination of unstable equilibrium modes and to the simulation of snap-through inversion. Computer examples are described and discussed.
A Mathematical Curiosity In Estimating The Radius Of The First Ring Electrons Of An Arbitary Atom, Donald Greenspan
A Mathematical Curiosity In Estimating The Radius Of The First Ring Electrons Of An Arbitary Atom, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
In this note, we explore an elementary method for approximating the radii and speeds of first ring electrons in atoms. The approach uses only a single algebraic equation with parameters. Any particular atom under study defines all the parameters. A simple hand calculator technique always applies for solving any resulting equation. Results are given through calcium and, to three decimal places, are shown, unexpectedly, to be essentially identical to available quantum mechanics calculations.
Neural Population Modeling And Psychology: A Review, Daniel S. Levine
Neural Population Modeling And Psychology: A Review, Daniel S. Levine
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The development of neural population modeling as it relates to psychology is traced from the early 1940s to the present. The evolution of the field has been from descriptions of randomly connected neurons transmitting all-or-none signals to analyses of structured multi-level net-works whose dynamics involve several different spatial and temporal scales. The cybernetic revolution of the 1940s led to the incorporation into digital neural models of such concepts as linear threshold logic, redundant computation. and information. Each of these concepts has more recently been synthesized with learning to generate a set of adaptive neural models. Concurrently, a variety of data …

The Role Of Nonreal Eigenvalues In The Identification Of Cycles In A Compartmental System, Jerome Eisenfeld, S. M. Grundy, W. F. Beltz
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The paper concerns the relationship between the cycles in the graph of a compartmental system and the modes of the impulse response function associated with an input-output experiment. Suppose that there is at least one oscillatory mode, [see pdf for notation]. Let [see pdf for notation] be the slowest mode. The main result is that the system contains a cycle of length three or longer and that the length of the longest cycle is at least [see pdf for notation]. The paper also deals with the problem of estimating cycle length from discrete data.
Existence Of Coupled Quasi-Solutions Of Systems Of Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Equations, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde
Existence Of Coupled Quasi-Solutions Of Systems Of Nonlinear Reaction-Diffusion Equations, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Systems of nonlinear parabolic initial boundary value problems arise in many applications such as epidemies, ecology, biochemistry, biology, chemical and nuclear engineering. Constructive methods of proving existence results for such problems, which can also provide numerical procedures for the computation of solutions, are of greater value than theoretical existence results. The method of upper and lower solutions coupled with monotone iterative technique has been employed successfully to prove existence of multiple solutions of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, in special case, by various authors [3,4,5,10,11,15 181. Recently, in [6,17] weakly coupled systems of reaction diffusion equations, when the nonlinear terms are independent …
Pressure Method For The Numerical Solution Of Transient, Compressible Fluid Flown, Donald Greenspan, Vincenzo Casulli
Pressure Method For The Numerical Solution Of Transient, Compressible Fluid Flown, Donald Greenspan, Vincenzo Casulli
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
In this paper the pressure method for incompressible fluid flow simulation is extended and applied to the numerical simulation of compressible fluid flow. The governing equations, obtained from the physical principles of conservation of momentum, mass and energy, are first studied from a characteristic point of view. Then they are discretized with a semi-implicit finite difference technique in such a fashion that the Courant stability condition on the time step is not required. The resulting algorithm is fast, accurate and applies to problems with arbitrarily large speed of sound. As an example, the computer simulation of the von Kármán vortex …

Monotone Method For Boundary Value Problems Describing Periodic Transport Processes, G. R. Shendge
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
One of the powerful methods of proving the existence of extremal solutions of initial and boundary value problems is the monotone iterative technique [1-4,6,7]. This has recently been applied [5] to a rather special type of boundary value problem [see pdf for notation] because, particular cases of (*) represent equations arising in the transport process of different types of particles moving in opposite directions, which are subjected to certain fluxes [8]. However (*) does not include situations in which the initial and final fluxes in a certain direction coincide. To cover this situation one needs to study a typical periodic …
Conserving Numerical Methods For X = F(X), Donald Greenspan
Conserving Numerical Methods For X = F(X), Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Physics is characterized by conservation laws and by symmetry [1]. Unfortunately, the application of numerical methodology in approximating solutions of initial value problems usually does not preserve either of these invariants. In this sense, the use of a computer destroys the physics of a dynamical model. We will show here how to conserve total energy when solving the nonlinear initial value problem [see pdf for notation] on a computer. Moreover, the energy conserved will be exactly that of (1.1), not a new "energy" which is defined by the numerical method (see, e.g., Langdon [5]). Two distinctly different methods will be …

Existence Of Coupled Quasi-Solutions Of Systems Of Nonlinear Elliptic Boundart Value Problems, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde, A. S. Vatsala
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Systems of nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems arise in many applications such as multiple chemical reactions that take place in an isothermal or nonisothermal catalyst pellet and simple models of tubular chemical reactors [7,8,9]. Moreover, such problems also occur in a natural way as auxiliary problems in stability analysis of steady states of dynamic systems governed by reaction-diffusion systems. Constructive methods of proving existence results of such boundary value problems, which can also provide numerical procedures for the computation of solutions, are of greater value than theoretical existence results. The method of upper and lower solutions coupled with monotone iterative …
A Study Of Robustness Of Preliminary Tests In Conditionally Specified Regression Models, Chien-Pai Han
A Study Of Robustness Of Preliminary Tests In Conditionally Specified Regression Models, Chien-Pai Han
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The selection of variables in regression analysis is usually done by using preliminary tests. When it is doubtful whether the regression coefficients of a set of variables are equal to zero or not, one may use a significance test. When the test rejects the null hypothesis, the set of variables is retained in the model otherwise the set is deleted from the model. The preliminary test is usually an F test based on normal theory. This paper examines the robustness of the preliminary test in model selection by a Monte Carlo study.
An Information Theoretic Approach To Incorporating Prior Information In Binomial Sampling, Paul Chiou, Danny D. Dyer
An Information Theoretic Approach To Incorporating Prior Information In Binomial Sampling, Paul Chiou, Danny D. Dyer
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The incorporation of prior information about [see pdf for notation], where [see pdf for notation] is the success probability in a binomial sampling model, is an essential feature of Bayesian statistics. Methodology based on information theoretic concepts is introduced which (a) quantifies the amount of information provided by the sample data relative to that provided by the prior distribution and (b) allows for a ranking of prior distributions with respect to conservativeness, where conservatism refers to restraint of extraneous information about [see pdf for notation] which is embedded in any prior distribution. In effect,, the most conservative prior distribution from …
Greedy And Optimal Paths In A Weighted Graph Without Circuits And Applications To A Class Of Optimization Problems On Finite Posets, Irinel C. Dragan
Greedy And Optimal Paths In A Weighted Graph Without Circuits And Applications To A Class Of Optimization Problems On Finite Posets, Irinel C. Dragan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
In several recent papers B. Korte and L. Lovasz considered a mathematical structure called a simple language on which a greedy algorithm can operate (see [31,J41, OD. The concept of greedoid has been defined by relaxing an axiom and strengthening an other axiom from the definition of the matroid. Under some constraints imposed to the objective function of a combinatorial optimization problem on a greedoid, the greedy algorithm provides an efficient method for solving the problem. An algorithmic characterization of the greedoids, similar to that of the matroids, was further searched. The effort has been justified-by several examples of combinatorial …

Extension Of Compartmental Parameters To Blocks Of Compartments With Application To Lipoprotein Kinetics, S. M. Grundy, Jerome Eisenfeld
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Suppose that the compartments of a compartmental model are separated into blocks (sets of compartments). In general, the blocks can not be regarded as compartments but it may be possible to construct a "condensation model," the compartments of which correspond to the blocks, in such a fashion so as to retain certain salient properties of the blocks. Condensation is a way of formally summarizing a large model by presenting a smaller one in order to emphasize certain characteristics.of the larger model. Suppose that the parameters to be retained are the mean residence times through the blocks. The paper deals with …

Correct ground, ionization, and excited states for two-electron systems are deduced deterministically by a direct extension of Bohr's method for hydrogen. The theory incorporates a classical interpretation of electron pairing and requires computer methodology to solve the resulting mathematical equations.
