Evolution Of Eigenvalues Of A Geometric Operator Under Ricci Flow On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken
Evolution Of Eigenvalues Of A Geometric Operator Under Ricci Flow On A Riemannian Manifold, Paul Bracken
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The behavior of the eigenvalues of a geometric operator closely related to the Laplacian under Ricci flow is investigated. These depend on a coupling parameter in the operator as well as an evolution parameter which gives a flow on a compact manifold of finite dimension. The main objective is to study the monotonicity properties of the eigenvalues.
Political Corruption And Corporate Risk-Taking, Hinh Khieu, Nam H. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan, Jon A. Fulkerson
Political Corruption And Corporate Risk-Taking, Hinh Khieu, Nam H. Nguyen, Hieu V. Phan, Jon A. Fulkerson
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We use variation in corruption convictions across judicial districts in the US to examine the relationship between political corruption and risk-taking of public firms. Firms headquartered in regions with high levels of political corruption have lower total risk and lower idiosyncratic risk on average. Further analysis shows that corruption tends to encourage firms to pursue risk-decreasing investments, lower the riskiness of their operations, and decrease asset liquidity. While managerial ownership is intended to align the interests of managers and shareholders, the presence of corruption appears to encourage undiversified managers to decrease risk-taking. Our evidence is consistent with agency theory and …
Modeling Functions Into An Angular Displacement Of An Elastic Pendulum, Brenda Lee Garcia
Modeling Functions Into An Angular Displacement Of An Elastic Pendulum, Brenda Lee Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis we study the relation between analytic signals and a variety of pendulum systems. The representation of a signal as a pair of time varying amplitude and phase has been well studied and often related to linear mass spring systems. The differential equations describing pendulum systems are nonlinear and we provide analytical and numerical results regarding interpretation about the amplitude and the phase of signals in different pendulum settings. We report an explicit solution of the Elastic Pendulum problem in the case of linear phase. We develop an experimental procedure to piece-wise approximate bounded functions on a partition …
A Decomposition Formula For The Multi-Soliton Solutions To The 'Good' Boussinesq Equation, Aldo Gonzalez
A Decomposition Formula For The Multi-Soliton Solutions To The 'Good' Boussinesq Equation, Aldo Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we relate multi-soliton waves generated by the 'good' Boussinesq equation to the distribution functions in the classical linear Schrödinger equation. The linear Schrödinger equation describes the distribution of a particle or particles in a particular environment. The Schrödinger equation is linear, the superposition principle of the solutions, especially the eigenfunctions is nonlinear and we will show that we may observe similar behavior in the solutions of the Boussinesq equations for soliton waves. The work extends the study of two-soliton solutions to the Boussinesq equation to the case of three-soliton solutions. …
Iterated Rascal Triangles, Jena M. Gregory
Iterated Rascal Triangles, Jena M. Gregory
Theses and Dissertations
We introduce a sequence of number triangles, {Ri} i=0 infty , such that the entries of each share a common generalized recurrence relation. R1 is the Rascal triangle and as i grows large, Ri becomes Pascal's triangle. For all i, we provide a combinatorial interpretation and find closed-term formulas for the entries of Ri . Our proofs rely on generating functions and other combinatorial arguments.
Pentagonal Tilings Of The Plane, Ariana T. Hinojosa
Pentagonal Tilings Of The Plane, Ariana T. Hinojosa
Theses and Dissertations
Tilings are mathematical objects that allow us to use geometry to visualize interaction between objects as well as to create artistic realization of mathematical objects in the plane and in the space.
We will focus on tilings of the plane that use only one type of convex pentagonal tile each, the pentagonal tilings. There are fifteen types of pentagonal tiles, with each containing their own set of restrictions. The main result of this thesis is an interactive realization of all fifteen types of pentagonal tiles using GeoGebra.
A Gpu Accelerated Genetic Algorithm For The Construction Of Hadamard Matrices, Raven I. Ruiz
A Gpu Accelerated Genetic Algorithm For The Construction Of Hadamard Matrices, Raven I. Ruiz
Theses and Dissertations
Hadamard matrices are square matrices with +1 and -1 entries and with columns that are mutually orthogonal. The applications include signal processing and quantum computing. There are several methods for constructing Hadamard matrices of order 2k for every positive integer k. The Hadamard conjecture proposes that there are also Hadamard matrices of order 4k for every positive integer k. We use a genetic algorithm to construct (search for) Hadamard Matrices. The initial population of random matrices is generated to have a balanced number of +1 and -1 entries in each column. Several fitness functions are implemented exploiting …
Boundary Feedback Control Of The 3d Navier-Stokes Equations, Camille Renee Vasquez
Boundary Feedback Control Of The 3d Navier-Stokes Equations, Camille Renee Vasquez
Theses and Dissertations
We present a boundary feedback stabilization of the parabolic steady state profile of the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations in a three-dimensional channel flow. The decentralized, static boundary feedback control laws are derived using Lyapunov technique. While the theoretical results are limited to stability enhancement for small Reynolds numbers, extensive numerical simulations and visualizations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed feedback law even in cases when the uncontrolled flow is turbulent.
On Approximating Solitary Wave Solutions For The Classical Euler Equations, Julio C. Paez
On Approximating Solitary Wave Solutions For The Classical Euler Equations, Julio C. Paez
Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, we use a method based on Hirota substitution or the Wronskian method to find approximate solitary wave solutions to the classical Euler equations. This method uses a small parameter lambda as the basis of approximation, a parameter derived from the form of prospective solutions we consider, rather than the standard small parameters alpha and beta. The L-infinity norm and asymptotic notation are used to measure the accuracy of the approximation rather than finding the error explicitly.
An Application Of Matrices To The Spread Of The Covid 19, Selena Suarez
An Application Of Matrices To The Spread Of The Covid 19, Selena Suarez
Theses and Dissertations
We represented a restaurant seating arrangement using matrices by using 0 entry for someone without covid and 1 entry for someone with covid. Using the matrices we found the best seating arrangements to lessen the spread of covid. We also investigated if there was a factor needed to create a formula that could calculate the matrix that shows who would be affected with covid with each seating arrangement. However, there did not seem to be a clear pattern within the factors. Aside from covid applications, we also investigated the symmetries in seating arrangements and the possible combinations with these arrangements …
Quantization For Infinite Affine Transformations, Dogan Comez, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
Quantization For Infinite Affine Transformations, Dogan Comez, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Quantization for a probability distribution refers to the idea of estimating a given probability by a discrete probability supported by a finite set. In this article, we consider a probability distribution generated by an infinite system of affine transformations {S-ij} on R-2 with associated probabilities {p(ij)} such that p(ij) > 0 for all i, j is an element of N and Sigma(infinity)(i,j=1) p(ij) = 1. For such a probability measure P, the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization error are calculated for every natural number n. It is shown that the distribution of such a probability measure is the …
An Integrable Semidiscretization Of The Modified Camassa-Holm Equation With Linear Dispersion Term, Han-Han Sheng, Guo-Fu Yu, Bao-Feng Feng
An Integrable Semidiscretization Of The Modified Camassa-Holm Equation With Linear Dispersion Term, Han-Han Sheng, Guo-Fu Yu, Bao-Feng Feng
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In the present paper, we are with integrable discretization of a modified Camassa-Holm (mCH) equation with linear dispersion term. The key of the construction is the semidiscrete analog for a set of bilinear equations of the mCH equation. First, we show that these bilinear equations and their determinant solutions either in Gram-type or Casorati-type can be reduced from the discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation through Miwa transformation. Then, by scrutinizing the reduction process, we obtain a set of semidiscrete bilinear equations and their general soliton solution in Gram-type or Casorati-type determinant form. Finally, by defining dependent variables and discrete hodograph transformations, …

Heat And Mass Transfer Of A Molten Polymer Conveying Nanoparticles In A Wire Coating Process With Temperature-Dependent Fluid Properties: Optimization Using Response Surface Method, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, Dambaru Bhatta
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Heat and mass transfer rates play a significant role in achieving a high-efficiency, low-cost wire coating process. Therefore, the flow analysis of molten polymer (polyvinyl chloride) carrying nanoparticles inside a pressure-type die is presented. The third-grade liquid model is used for the constitutive equation of the polyvinyl chloride (PVC), while the non-homogeneous biphasic model is used for nanoparticles. The properties of PVC are temperature-dependent. The melt flow is governed by the modified Navier-Stokes equation for the third-grade fluid, energy conservation, and nanoparticles' continuity equation. The finite difference method-based routine is applied to solve the nonlinear differential equations that include …
Multiple Periodic Vibrations Of Auxetic Honeycomb Sandwich Plate With 1:2 Internal Resonance, Shaotao Zhu, Jing Li, Zhijun Qiao, Ji Zhou
Multiple Periodic Vibrations Of Auxetic Honeycomb Sandwich Plate With 1:2 Internal Resonance, Shaotao Zhu, Jing Li, Zhijun Qiao, Ji Zhou
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we focus on the multiple periodic vibration behaviors of an auxetic honeycomb sandwich plate subjected to in-plane and transverse excitations. Nonlinear equation of motion for the plate is derived based on the third-order shear deformation theory and von Kármán type nonlinear geometric assumptions. The Melnikov method is extended to detect the bifurcation and multiple periodic vibrations of the plate under 1:2 internal resonance. The effects of transverse excitation on nonlinear vibration behaviors are discussed in detail. Evolution laws and waveforms of multiple periodic vibrations are obtained to analyze the energy transfer process between the first two order …

Number Of Bounded Distance Equivalence Classes In Hulls Of Repetitive Delone Sets, Dirk Frettlöh, Alexey Garber, Lorenzo Sadun
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Two Delone sets are bounded distance equivalent to each other if there is a bijection between them such that the distance of corresponding points is uniformly bounded. Bounded distance equivalence is an equivalence relation. We show that the hull of a repetitive Delone set with finite local complexity has either one equivalence class or uncountably many.

Integrable Semi-Discretization Of A Modified Short Wave Equation, Yujuan Zhang, Ruyun Ma, Na Xiong, Bao-Feng Feng
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we are concerned with one of the integrable equations proposed by Hone et al. (2018). We firstly show that it can be derived from the Tzitzeica equation through hodograph or reciprocal transformations and it is linked to the short wave limits of the DP and Novikov equations, respectively, through Miura transformations. Based on the semi-discrete analogue of CKP-Toda hierarchy, we construct the integrable semi-discretization of what we call the modified short wave equation and provide its multi-soliton solution.

In this paper, for mixed distributions generated by two uniform distributions we investigate the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization errors for all positive integers n. Some conjectures and open problems are also given.
Multi-Breather Solutions To The Sasa-Satsuma Equation, Chengfa Wu, Bo Wei, Changyan Shi, Bao-Feng Feng
Multi-Breather Solutions To The Sasa-Satsuma Equation, Chengfa Wu, Bo Wei, Changyan Shi, Bao-Feng Feng
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
General breather solution to the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) equation is systematically investigated in this paper. We firstly transform the SS equation into a set of three Hirota bilinear equations under proper plane wave background. Starting from a specially arranged tau-function of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy and a set of eleven bilinear equations satisfied, we implement a series steps of reduction procedure, i.e., C-type reduction, dimension reduction and complex conjugate reduction, and reduce these eleven equations to three bilinear equations for the SS equation. Meanwhile, general breather solution to the SS equation is found in determinant of even order. The one- and two-breather …

Inverse Scattering Transform For The Complex Coupled Short-Pulse Equation, Aikaterini Gkogkou, Bao-Feng Feng, A. David Trubatch
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we develop the Riemann–Hilbert approach to the inverse scattering transform (IST) for the complex coupled short-pulse equation on the line with zero boundary conditions at space infinity, which is a generalization of recent work on the scalar real short-pulse equation (SPE) and complex short-pulse equation (cSPE). As a byproduct of the IST, soliton solutions are also obtained. As is often the case, the zoology of soliton solutions for the coupled system is richer than in the scalar case, and it includes both fundamental solitons (the natural, vector generalization of the scalar case), and fundamental breathers (a superposition …

We study in a rigorous mathematical way p-adic quantum field theories whose N-point amplitudes are the expectation of products of vertex operators. We show that this type of amplitudes admit a series expansion where each term is an Igusa's local zeta function. The lowest term in this series is a regularized version of the p-adic open Koba-Nielsen string amplitude.

The Reduced Order Method For Solving The Linear Complementarity Problem With An M-Matrix, Xi-Ming Fang, Heng-Jun Zhao, Zhijun Qiao
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, by seeking the zero and the positive entry positions of the solution, we provide a direct method, called the reduced order method, for solving the linear complementarity problem with an M-matrix. By this method, the linear complementarity problem is transformed into a low order linear complementarity problem with some low order linear equations and the solution is constructed by the solution of the low order linear complementarity problem and the solutions of these low order linear equations in the transformations. In order to show the accuracy and the effectiveness of the method, the corresponding numerical experiments …

Affect (e.g., beliefs, attitudes, emotions) plays a crucial role in mathematics learning, but reliance on verbal and written responses (from surveys, interviews, etc.) limits students’ expression of their affective states. As a complement to existing methods that rely on verbal reports, we explore how graphing can be used to study affect during mathematical experiences. We analyze three studies that used graphing to represent, stimulate recall, and reflect on affect. In each, students were asked to draw their perception of an affective construct, such as confidence or intensity of emotion, against time. The studies differed in participant populations, target affect, timescales …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We study a log-gas on a network (a finite, simple graph) confined in a bounded subset of a local field (i.e., R, C, and Qp being the field of p-adic numbers). In this gas, a log-Coulomb interaction between two charged particles occurs only when the sites of the particles are connected by an edge of the network. The partition functions of such gases turn out to be a particular class of multivariate local zeta functions attached to the network and a positive test function, which is determined by the confining potential. The methods and results of the theory of local …

Background
Kuwait had its first COVID-19 in late February, and until October 6, 2020 it recorded 108,268 cases and 632 deaths. Despite implementing one of the strictest control measures-including a three-week complete lockdown, there was no sign of a declining epidemic curve. The objective of the current analyses is to determine, hypothetically, the optimal timing and duration of a full lockdown in Kuwait that would result in controlling new infections and lead to a substantial reduction in case hospitalizations.
Methods
The analysis was conducted using a stochastic Continuous-Time Markov Chain (CTMC), eight state model that depicts the disease transmission and …

We provide new answers about the distribution of mass on spheres so as to minimize energies of pairwise interactions. We find optimal measures for the pp-frame energies, i.e., energies with the kernel given by the absolute value of the inner product raised to a positive power pp. Application of linear programming methods in the setting of projective spaces allows for describing the minimizing measures in full in several cases: we show optimality of tight designs and of the 600-cell for several ranges of pp in different dimensions. Our methods apply to a much broader class of potential functions, namely, those …

On Rotationally Driven Nonlinear Inclined Polymeric Jet With Gravity Effect, Daniel N. Riahi, Saulo Orizaga
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We consider rotationally driven nonlinear polymeric fiber jet, whose centerline is in an inclined plane, in the presence of gravity force. An empirical viscosity model is used for the polymeric fluid flow to investigate properties of the rotating inclined polymeric fiber jet. The aim of the study is to understand properties of such inclined fiber jet shape, which can be due to orientation change of an orifice in a rotating spinneret that generates such jet. Perturbation, asymptotic, scaling and numerical techniques are used to determine the nonlinear steady solutions for the jet quantities for different values of the parameters due …

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper the semilinear equation of the spin-12 fields in the de Sitter space is investigated. We prove the existence of the global in time small data solution in the expanding de Sitter universe. Then, under the Lochak–Majorana condition, we prove the existence of the global in time solution with large data. The sufficient conditions for the solutions to blow up in finite time are given for large data in the expanding and contracting de Sitter spacetimes. The influence of the Hubble constant on the lifespan is estimated.

We generalize the notion of online list coloring to signed graphs. We define the online list chromatic number of a signed graph, and prove a generalization of Brooks’ Theorem. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a signed graph to be degree paintable, or degree choosable. Finally, we classify the 2-list-colorable and 2-list-paintable signed graphs.
