Decompositions Of Betti Diagrams, Courtney Gibbons
Decompositions Of Betti Diagrams, Courtney Gibbons
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this dissertation, we are concerned with decompositions of Betti diagrams over standard graded rings and the information about that ring and its modules that can be recovered from these decompositions. In Chapter 2, we study the structure of modules over short Gorenstein graded rings and determine a necessary condition for a matrix of nonnegative integers to be the Betti diagram of such a module. We also describe the cone of Betti diagrams over the ring k[x,y]/(x2,y2), and we provide an algorithm for decomposing Betti diagrams, even for modules of infinite projective dimension. Chapter 3 …
Development And Application Of Difference And Fractional Calculus On Discrete Time Scales, Tanner J. Auch
Development And Application Of Difference And Fractional Calculus On Discrete Time Scales, Tanner J. Auch
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this dissertation is to develop and apply results of both discrete calculus and discrete fractional calculus to further develop results on various discrete time scales. Two main goals of discrete and fractional discrete calculus are to extend results from traditional calculus and to unify results on the real line with those on a variety of subsets of the real line. Of particular interest is introducing and analyzing results related to a generalized fractional boundary value problem with Lidstone boundary conditions on a standard discrete domain N_a. We also introduce new results regarding exponential order for functions on …

Results On Containments And Resurgences, With A Focus On Ideals Of Points In The Plane, Annika Denkert
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Let K be an algebraically closed field and I ⊆ R=K[PN] a nontrivial homogeneous ideal. We can describe ordinary powers Ir and symbolic powers I(m) of I. One question that has been of interest over the past couple of years is that of when we have containment of I(m) in Ir. Bocci and Harbourne defined the resurgence of I as rho(I)=supm,r{m/r | I(m) is not contained in Ir}. Hence in particular I(m) ⊆ Ir whenever m/r is at least …
Geometric Study Of The Category Of Matrix Factorizations, Xuan Yu
Geometric Study Of The Category Of Matrix Factorizations, Xuan Yu
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We study the geometry of matrix factorizations in this dissertation.
It contains two parts. The first one is a Chern-Weil style
construction for the Chern character of matrix factorizations; this
allows us to reproduce the Chern character in an explicit,
understandable way. Some basic properties of the Chern character are
also proved (via this construction) such as functoriality and that
it determines a ring homomorphism from the Grothendieck group of
matrix factorizations to its Hochschild homology. The second part is
a reconstruction theorem of hypersurface singularities. This is
given by applying a slightly modified version of Balmer's tensor
triangular geometry …
Embedding And Nonembedding Results For R. Thompson's Group V And Related Groups, Nathan Corwin
Embedding And Nonembedding Results For R. Thompson's Group V And Related Groups, Nathan Corwin
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We study Richard Thompson's group V, and some generalizations of this group. V was one of the first two examples of a finitely presented, infinite, simple group. Since being discovered in 1965, V has appeared in a wide range of mathematical subjects. Despite many years of study, much of the structure of V remains unclear. Part of the difficulty is that the standard presentation for V is complicated, hence most algebraic techniques have yet to prove fruitful.
This thesis obtains some further understanding of the structure of V by showing the nonexistence of the wreath product Z wr Z^2 as …
Bimodules Over Cartan Masas In Von Neumann Algebras, Norming Algebras, And Mercer's Theorem, Jan Cameron, David R. Pitts, Vrej Zarikian
Bimodules Over Cartan Masas In Von Neumann Algebras, Norming Algebras, And Mercer's Theorem, Jan Cameron, David R. Pitts, Vrej Zarikian
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
In a 1991 paper, R. Mercer asserted that a Cartan bimod- ule isomorphism between Cartan bimodule algebras A1 and A2 extends uniquely to a normal -isomorphism of the von Neumann algebras gener- ated by A1 and A2 (Corollary 4.3 of Mercer, 1991). Mercer's argument relied upon the Spectral Theorem for Bimodules of Muhly, Saito and Solel, 1988 (Theorem 2.5, there). Unfortunately, the arguments in the literature supporting their Theorem 2.5 contain gaps, and hence Mercer's proof is incomplete.
In this paper, we use the outline in Pitts, 2008, Remark 2.17, to give a proof of Mercer's Theorem under the additional …
Boundary Value Problems For Discrete Fractional Equations, Pushp R. Awasthi
Boundary Value Problems For Discrete Fractional Equations, Pushp R. Awasthi
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this dissertation we develop certain aspects of the theory of discrete fractional calculus. The author begins with an introduction to the discrete delta calculus together with the fractional delta calculus which is used throughout this dissertation. The Cauchy function, the Green's function and some of their important properties for a fractional boundary value problem for are developed. This dissertation is comprised of four chapters. In the first chapter we introduce the delta fractional calculus. In the second chapter we give some preliminary definitions, properties and theorems for the fractional delta calculus and derive the appropriate Green's function and give …

The Neural Ring: An Algebraic Tool For Analyzing The Intrinsic Structure Of Neural Codes, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov, Alan Veliz-Cuba, Nora Youngs
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Neurons in the brain represent external stimuli via neural codes. These codes often arise from stereotyped stimulus-response maps, associating to each neuron a convex receptive field. An important problem confronted by the brain is to infer properties of a represented stimulus space without knowledge of the receptive fields, using only the intrinsic structure of the neural code. How does the brain do this? To address this question, it is important to determine what stimulus space features can - in principle - be extracted from neural codes. This motivates us to define the neural ring and a related neural ideal, …
Symbolic Powers Of Ideals In K[PN], Michael Janssen
Symbolic Powers Of Ideals In K[PN], Michael Janssen
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Let I ⊆ k[PN] be a homogeneous ideal and k an algebraically closed field. Of particular interest over the last several years are ideal containments of symbolic powers of I in ordinary powers of I of the form I(m) ⊆ Ir, and which ratios m/r guarantee such containment. A result of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Smith and Hochster-Huneke states that, if I ⊆ k[PN], where k is an algebraically closed field, then the symbolic power I(Ne) is contained in the ordinary power Ie, and thus, whenever …
Periodic Modules Over Gorenstein Local Rings, Amanda Croll
Periodic Modules Over Gorenstein Local Rings, Amanda Croll
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
It is proved that the minimal free resolution of a module M over a Gorenstein local ring R is eventually periodic if, and only if, the class of M is torsion in a certain Z[t,t^{-1}] associated to R. This module, denoted (R), is the free Z[t,t^{-1}]-module on the isomorphism classes of finitely generated R-modules modulo relations reminiscent of those defining the Grothendieck group of R. The main result is a structure theorem for J(R) when R is a complete Gorenstein local ring; the link between periodicity and torsion stated above is a corollary.

Regularity For Solutions To Parabolic Systems And Nonlocal Minimization Problems, Joe Geisbauer
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The goal of this dissertation is to contribute to both the nonlocal and local settings of regularity within the calculus of variations. We provide analogues of higher differentiability results in the context of Besov spaces for minimizers of nonlocal functionals. We also establish the Holder continuity of solutions to a system of parabolic partial differential equations.

For i = 1; 2, let (Mi;Di) be pairs consisting of a Cartan MASA Di in a von Neumann algebra Mi, let atom(Di) be the set of atoms of Di, and let Si be the lattice of Bures-closed Di bimodules in Mi. School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
An integrated interdisciplinary research course in biology and mathematics is useful for recruiting students to interdisciplinary research careers, but there are difficulties involved in creating and implementing it. We describe the genesis, objectives, design policies, and structure of the Research Skills in Theoretical Ecology course at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and discuss the difficulties that can arise in designing and implementing interdisciplinary courses.

An Interdisciplinary Research Course In Theoretical Ecology For Young Undergraduates, Glenn Ledder, Brigitte Tenhumberg, G. Travis Adams
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
As part of an interdepartmental effort to attract promising young students to research at the interface between mathematics and biology, we created a course in which groups of recent high school graduates and first-year college students conducted a research project in insect population dynamics. The students set up experiments, collected data, used the data to develop mathematical models, tested their models against further experiments, and prepared their results for dissemination. The course was self-contained in that the lecture portion developed the mathematical, statistical, and biological background needed for the research. A special writing component helped students learn the principles of …

Modeling And Mathematical Analysis Of Plant Models In Ecology, Eric A. Eager
Modeling And Mathematical Analysis Of Plant Models In Ecology, Eric A. Eager
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Population dynamics tries to explain in a simple mechanistic way the variations of the size and structure of biological populations. In this dissertation we use mathematical modeling and analysis to study the various aspects of the dynamics of plant populations and their seed banks.
In Chapter 2 we investigate the impact of structural model uncertainty by considering different nonlinear recruitment functions in an integral projection model for Cirsium canescens. We show that, while having identical equilibrium populations, these two models can elicit drastically different transient dynamics. We then derive a formula for the sensitivity of the equilibrium population to …
An Analysis Of Nonlocal Boundary Value Problems Of Fractional And Integer Order, Christopher Steven Goodrich
An Analysis Of Nonlocal Boundary Value Problems Of Fractional And Integer Order, Christopher Steven Goodrich
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this work we provide an analysis of both fractional- and integer-order boundary value problems, certain of which contain explicit nonlocal terms. In the discrete fractional case we consider several different types of boundary value problems including the well-known right-focal problem. Attendant to our analysis of discrete fractional boundary value problems, we also provide an analysis of the continuity properties of solutions to discrete fractional initial value problems. Finally, we conclude by providing new techniques for analyzing integer-order nonlocal boundary value problems.

Commutative Rings Graded By Abelian Groups, Brian P. Johnson
Commutative Rings Graded By Abelian Groups, Brian P. Johnson
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rings graded by Z and Zd play a central role in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, and the purpose of this thesis is to consider rings graded by any abelian group. A commutative ring is graded by an abelian group if the ring has a direct sum decomposition by additive subgroups of the ring indexed over the group, with the additional condition that multiplication in the ring is compatible with the group operation. In this thesis, we develop a theory of graded rings by defining analogues of familiar properties---such as chain conditions, dimension, and Cohen-Macaulayness. We then study the …
Prime Ideals In Two-Dimensional Noetherian Domains And Fiber Products And Connected Sums, Ela Celikbas
Prime Ideals In Two-Dimensional Noetherian Domains And Fiber Products And Connected Sums, Ela Celikbas
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis concerns three topics in commutative algebra:
1) The projective line over the integers (Chapter 2),
2) Prime ideals in two-dimensional quotients of mixed power series-polynomial rings (Chapter 3),
3) Fiber products and connected sums of local rings (Chapter 4),
In the first chapter we introduce basic terminology used in this thesis for all three topics.
In the second chapter we consider the partially ordered set (poset) of prime ideals of the projective line Proj(Z[h,k]) over the integers Z, and we interpret this poset as Spec(Z[x]) U Spec(Z[1/x]) with an appropriate identification. …
The Weak Discrepancy And Linear Extension Diameter Of Grids And Other Posets, Katherine Victoria Johnson
The Weak Discrepancy And Linear Extension Diameter Of Grids And Other Posets, Katherine Victoria Johnson
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A linear extension of a partially ordered set is simply a total ordering of the poset that is consistent with the original ordering. The linear extension diameter is a measure of how different two linear extensions could be, that is, the number of pairs of elements that are ordered differently by the two extensions. In this dissertation, we calculate the linear extension diameter of grids. This also gives us a nice characterization of the linear extensions that are the farthest from each other, and allows us to conclude that grids are diametrally reversing.
A linear extension of a poset might …

Structure For Regular Inclusions, David R. Pitts
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We study pairs (C,D) of unital C∗-algebras where D is an abelian C∗-subalgebra of C which is regular in C in the sense that the span of {v 2 C : vDv∗ [ v∗Dv D} is dense in C. When D is a MASA in C, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a completely positive unital map E of C into the injective envelope I(D) of D whose restriction to D is the identity on D. We show that the left kernel of E, L(C,D), is the unique closed two-sided ideal of C maximal with respect to having trivial …

Negative Curves On Algebraic Surfaces, Thomas Bauer, Brian Harbourne, Andreas Leopold Knutsen, Alex Kuronya, Stefan Muller-Stach, Xavier Roulleau, Tomasz Szemberg
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We study curves of negative self-intersection on algebraic surfaces. In contrast to what occurs in positive characteristics, it turns out that any smooth complex projective surface X with a surjective non-isomorphic endomorphism has bounded negativity (i.e., that C2 is bounded below for prime divisors C on X). We prove the same statement for Shimura curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. As a byproduct we obtain that there exist only finitely many smooth Shimura curves on a given Hilbert modular surface. We. also show that any set of curves of bounded genus on a smooth complex projective surface must have bounded negativity

Combinatorics Using Computational Methods, Derrick Stolee
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Computational combinatorics involves combining pure mathematics, algorithms, and computational resources to solve problems in pure combinatorics. This thesis provides a theoretical framework for combinatorial search, which is then applied to several problems in combinatorics. Some results in space-bounded computational complexity are also presented.

Water resources worldwide require management to meet industrial, agricultural, and urban consumption needs. Management actions change the natural flow regime, which impacts the river ecosystem. Water managers are tasked with meeting water needs while mitigating ecosystem im- pacts. We develop process-oriented advection-diffusion-reaction equations that couple hydraulic flow to population growth, and we analyze them to assess the effect of water flow on population persistence. We present a new mathematical framework, based on the net reproductive rate R0 for advection-diffusion-reaction equations and on related measures. We apply the measures to popula- tion persistence in rivers under various flow regimes. This …

Are Symbolic Powers Highly Evolved?, Brian Harbourne, Craig Hunkeke
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Searching for structural reasons behind old results and conjectures of Chudnovksy regarding the least degree of a nonzero form in an ideal of fat points in PN, we make conjectures which explain them, and we prove the conjectures in certain cases, including the case of general points in P2. Our conjectures were also partly motivated by the Eisenbud-Mazur Conjecture on evolutions, which concerns symbolic squares of prime ideals in local rings, but in contrast we consider higher symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings.
Isomorph-Free Generation Of 2-Connected Graphs With Applications, Derrick Stolee
Isomorph-Free Generation Of 2-Connected Graphs With Applications, Derrick Stolee
School of Computing: Technical Reports
Many interesting graph families contain only 2-connected graphs, which have ear decompositions. We develop a technique to generate families of unlabeled 2-connected graphs using ear augmentations and apply this technique to two problems. In the first application, we search for uniquely Kr-saturated graphs and find the list of uniquely K4-saturated graphs on at most 12 vertices, supporting current conjectures for this problem. In the second application, we verify the Edge Reconstruction Conjecture for all 2-connected graphs on at most 12 vertices. This technique can be easily extended to more problems concerning 2-connected graphs.
Covariant Representations Of C*-Dynamical Systems Involving Compact Groups, Firuz Kamalov
Covariant Representations Of C*-Dynamical Systems Involving Compact Groups, Firuz Kamalov
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Given a C*-dynamical system (A, G, σ) the crossed product C*-algebra A x σG encodes the action of G on A. By the universal property of A x σG there exists a one to one correspondence between the set all covariant representations of the system (A, G, σ) and the set of all *-representations of A x σG. Therefore, the study of representations of A x σG is equivalent to that of covariant representations of (A, G, σ).
We study induced covariant representations of systems involving compact groups. We prove that every irreducible (resp. factor) covariant …

Groups And Semigroups Generated By Automata, David Mccune
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this dissertation we classify the metabelian groups arising from a restricted class of invertible synchronous automata over a binary alphabet. We give faithful, self-similar actions of Heisenberg groups and upper triangular matrix groups. We introduce a new class of semigroups given by a restricted class of asynchronous automata. We call these semigroups ``expanding automaton semigroups''. We show that this class strictly contains the class of automaton semigroups, and we show that the class of asynchronous automaton semigroups strictly contains the class of expanding automaton semigroups. We demonstrate that undecidability arises in the actions of expanding automaton semigroups and semigroups …
Homology Of Artinian Modules Over Commutative Noetherian Rings, Micah J. Leamer
Homology Of Artinian Modules Over Commutative Noetherian Rings, Micah J. Leamer
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This work is primarily concerned with the study of artinian modules over commutative noetherian rings.
We start by showing that many of the properties of noetherian modules that make homological methods work seamlessly have analogous properties for artinian modules. We prove many of these properties using Matlis duality and a recent characterization of Matlis reflexive modules. Since Matlis reflexive modules are extensions of noetherian and artinian modules many of the properties that hold for artinian and noetherian modules naturally follow for Matlis reflexive modules and more generally for mini-max modules.
In the last chapter we prove that if the Betti …

Hilbert–Samuel And Hilbert–Kunz Functions Of Zero-Dimensional Ideals, Lori A. Mcdonnell
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Hilbert-Samuel function measures the length of powers of a zero-dimensional ideal in a local ring. Samuel showed that over a local ring these lengths agree with a polynomial, called the Hilbert-Samuel polynomial, for sufficiently large powers of the ideal. We examine the coefficients of this polynomial in the case the ideal is generated by a system of parameters, focusing much of our attention on the second Hilbert coefficient. We also consider the Hilbert-Kunz function, which measures the length of Frobenius powers of an ideal in a ring of positive characteristic. In particular, we examine a conjecture of Watanabe and …
