Addressing The Principles For School Mathematics: A Case Study Of Elementary Teachers Pedagogy And Practices In An Urban High-Poverty School, Robert Q. Berry, Linda Bol, Sueanne E. Mckinney
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
The extent to which four novice teachers assigned to an urban high-poverty school implemented the Principles of School Mathematics during their mathematics instruction program was investigated using a case study design. The research team conducted 36 unannounced observations of the participating teachers and utilized a developed assessment to guide their observations. Results indicated that only one teacher was judged proficient for all the principles. The remaining three teachers fell short in the implementation and direction of the principles. Detailed descriptions of the pedagogical practices of the teachers are provided.
Gas-Kinetic Schemes For Direct Numerical Simulations Of Compressible Homogeneous Turbulence, Wei Liao, Yan Peng, Li-Shi Luo
Gas-Kinetic Schemes For Direct Numerical Simulations Of Compressible Homogeneous Turbulence, Wei Liao, Yan Peng, Li-Shi Luo
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
We apply the gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) for the direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of compressible decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence (DHIT). We intend to study the accuracy, stability, and efficiency of the gas-kinetic scheme for DNS of compressible homogeneous turbulence depending on both flow conditions and numerics. In particular, we study the GKS with multidimensional, quasi-one-dimensional, dimensional-splitting, and smooth-flow approximations. We simulate the compressible DHIT with the Taylor microscale Reynolds number Reλ =72.0 and the turbulence Mach number Mat between 0.1 and 0.6. We compute the low-order statistical quantities including the total kinetic energy K (t), the dissipation rate ε (t), …

As air traffic is growing in leaps and bounds every day, flying safe has been a major concern in day to day life. Aviation safety is always dependent on the performance of the pilot and air traffic controllers. The very involvement of human discretion introduces judgment as a component of a safe takeoff and landing. A convenient and immediate alternative would be the use of technology to alleviate the problem. Several algorithms have been developed to solve this problem. However, most computer vision algorithms leave the task of interpreting the end data unaddressed. Juggling the myriad tasks during landing and …
Analysis And Application Of Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For Computational Aeroacoustics, Sarah Anne Parrish
Analysis And Application Of Perfectly Matched Layer Absorbing Boundary Conditions For Computational Aeroacoustics, Sarah Anne Parrish
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) was originally proposed by Berenger as an absorbing boundary condition for Maxwell's equations in 1994 and is still used extensively in the field of electromagnetics. The idea was extended to Computational Aeroacoustics in 1996, when Hu applied the method to Euler's equations. Since that time much of the work done on PML in the field of acoustics has been specific to the case where mean flow is perpendicular to a boundary, with an emphasis on Cartesian coordinates. The goal of this work is to further extend the PML methodology in a two-fold manner: First, to …
A Comparison Of Different Methods For Predicting Cancer Mortality Counts At The State Level, Corinne Wilson
A Comparison Of Different Methods For Predicting Cancer Mortality Counts At The State Level, Corinne Wilson
Virginia Journal of Science
Cancer is a major health issue in the United States. Reliable estimates of yearly cancer mortality counts are essential for resourcing and planning. The American Cancer Society has used several methods of forecasting to estimate the future cancer burden and researchers are continually working to develop new methods with improved performance. There have been studies comparing different models for predicting the US cancer mortality counts. This study explores and compares several different models for cancer mortality count predictions at the state level, principally for the state of Virginia. Results of the comparisons appear to show the final improved model to …
Lipschitz Continuity Of The Best Approximation Operator In Vector-Valued Chebyshev Approximation, Martin Bartelt, John Swetits
Lipschitz Continuity Of The Best Approximation Operator In Vector-Valued Chebyshev Approximation, Martin Bartelt, John Swetits
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
When G is a finite dimensional Haar subspace of C(X, Rk), the vector-valued continuous functions (including complex-valued functions when k is 2) from a finite set X to Euclidean k-dimensional space, it is well-known that at any function f in C(X, Rk) the best approximation operator satisfies the strong unicity condition of order 2 and a Lipschitz (H˝older) condition of order 1/2. This note shows that in fact the best approximation operator satisfies the usual Lipschitz condition of order 1.

Dgm-Fd: A Finite Difference Scheme Based On The Discontinuous Galerkin Method, Anne Marguerite Fernando
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Accurate and efficient numerical wave propagation is important in many areas of study such as computational aero-acoustics (CAA). While dissipation and dispersion errors influence the accuracy of a method, efficiency can be assessed by convergence rates and effective adaptability to different mesh structures. Finite difference and finite element methods are commonly used numerical schemes in CAA. Finite difference methods have the advantages of ease of use as well as high order convergence, but often require a uniform grid, and stable boundary closure can be non-trivial. Finite element methods adapt well to different mesh structures but can become difficult to implement …
Improved Constrained Global Optimization For Estimating Molecular Structure From Atomic Distances, Terri Marie Grant
Improved Constrained Global Optimization For Estimating Molecular Structure From Atomic Distances, Terri Marie Grant
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Determination of molecular structure is commonly posed as a nonlinear optimization problem. The objective functions rely on a vast amount of structural data. As a result, the objective functions are most often nonconvex, nonsmooth, and possess many local minima. Furthermore, introduction of additional structural data into the objective function creates barriers in finding the global minimum, causes additional computational issues associated with evaluating the function, and makes physical constraint enforcement intractable. To combat the computational problems associated with standard nonlinear optimization formulations, Williams et al. (2001) proposed an atom-based optimization, referred to as GNOMAD, which complements a simple interatomic distance …
On The Use Of Quasi-Newton Methods For The Minimization Of Convex Quadratic Splines, William Howard Thomas Ii
On The Use Of Quasi-Newton Methods For The Minimization Of Convex Quadratic Splines, William Howard Thomas Ii
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
In reformulating a strictly convex quadratic program with simple bound constraints as the unconstrained minimization of a strictly convex quadratic spline, established algorithms can be implemented with relaxed differentiability conditions. In this work, the positive definite secant update method of Broyden, Fletcher, Goldfarb, and Shanno (BFGS) is investigated as a tool to solve the unconstrained minimization problem. It is shown that there is a linear convergence rate and, for nondegenerate problems, the process terminates in a finite number of iterations. Numerical examples are provided.
The Computation Of Exact Green's Functions In Acoustic Analogy By A Spectral Collocation Boundary Element Method, Andrea D. Jones
The Computation Of Exact Green's Functions In Acoustic Analogy By A Spectral Collocation Boundary Element Method, Andrea D. Jones
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Aircraft airframe noise pollution resulting from the take-off and landing of airplanes is a growing concern. Because of advances in numerical analysis and computer technology, most of the current noise prediction methods are computationally efficient. However, the ability to effectively apply an approach to complex airframe geometries continues to challenge researchers. The objective of this research is to develop and analyze a robust noise prediction method for dealing with geometrical modifications. This new approach for determining sound pressure involves computing exact, or tailored, Green's functions for use in acoustic analogy. The effects of sound propagation and scattering by solid surfaces …
A Technique For Solving The Singular Integral Equations Of Potential Theory, Brian George Burns
A Technique For Solving The Singular Integral Equations Of Potential Theory, Brian George Burns
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The singular integral equations of Potential Theory are investigated using ideas from both classical and contemporary mathematics. The goal of this semi-analytic approach is to produce numerical schemes that are both general and computationally simple. Previous works based on classical methods have yielded solutions only for very special cases while contemporary methods such as finite differences, finite elements and boundary element techniques are computationally extensive. Since the two-dimensional integral equations of interest exhibit structural invariance under a wide class of conformal mappings initial emphasis is placed on circular domains. By Fourier expansion with respect to the angular variable, such two-dimensional …
Clarifications Of Rule 2 In Teaching Geometric Dimensioning And Tolerancing, Cheng Lin, Alok Verma
Clarifications Of Rule 2 In Teaching Geometric Dimensioning And Tolerancing, Cheng Lin, Alok Verma
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is a symbolic language used on engineering drawings and computer generated three-dimensional solid models for explicitly describing nominal geometry and its allowable variation. Application cases using the concept of Rule 2 in the Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) are presented. The rule affects all fourteen geometric characteristics. Depending on the nature and location where each feature control frame is specified, interpretation on the applicability of Rule 2 is quite inconsistent. This paper focuses on identifying the characteristics of a feature control frame to remove this inconsistency. A table is created to clarify the confusions for students …

Microscopic-Macroscopic Simulations Of Rigid-Rod Polymer Hydrodynamics: Heterogeneity And Rheochaos, M. Gregory Forest, Ruhai Zhou, Qi Wang
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Rheochaos is a remarkable phenomenon of nematic (rigid-rod) polymers in steady shear, with sustained chaotic fluctuations of the orientational distribution of the rod ensemble. For monodomain dynamics, imposing spatial homogeneity and linear shear, rheochaos is a hallmark prediction of the Doi-Hess theory [M. Doi, J. Polym. Sci. Polym. Phys. Ed., 19 (1981), pp. 229-243; M. Doi and S. F. Edwards, The Theory of Polymer Dynamics, Oxford University Press, London, New York, 1986; S. Hess, Z. Naturforsch., 31 (1976), pp. 1034-1037. iSTART (interactive strategy training for active reading and thinking) is a Web-based reading strategy trainer that develops students' ability to self-explain difficult text as a means to improving reading comprehension. Its curriculum consists of modules presented interactively by pedagogical agents: an introduction to the basics of using reading strategies in the context of self-explanation, a demonstration of self-explanation, and a practice module in which the trainee generates self-explanations with feedback on the quality of reading strategies contained in the self-explanations. We discuss the objectives that guided the development of the second version of iSTART toward the goals of increased efficiency …
An Implicit Level Set Model For Firespread, Pallop Huabsomboon
An Implicit Level Set Model For Firespread, Pallop Huabsomboon
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The level set method is a mathematical and computational, technique for tracking a moving interface over time. It can naturally handle topological changes such as merging or breaking interfaces. Intrinsic geometric properties of the interface, such as curvature and normal direction, are easily determined from the level set function &phis;. There are many applications of the level set method, including kinetic crystal growth, epitaxial growth of thin films, image restoration, vortex dominated flows, and so forth. Most applications described in the growing literature on the applications of level sets advance the level set equation with explicit time integration. Hence, small …
Hessian Matrix-Free Lagrange-Newton-Krylov-Schur-Schwarz Methods For Elliptic Inverse Problems, Widodo Samyono
Hessian Matrix-Free Lagrange-Newton-Krylov-Schur-Schwarz Methods For Elliptic Inverse Problems, Widodo Samyono
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
This study focuses on the solution of inverse problems for elliptic systems. The inverse problem is constructed as a PDE-constrained optimization, where the cost function is the L2 norm of the difference between the measured data and the predicted state variable, and the constraint is an elliptic PDE. Particular examples of the system considered in this stud, are groundwater flow and radiation transport. The inverse problems are typically ill-posed due to error in measurements of the data. Regularization methods are employed to partially alleviate this problem. The PDE-constrained optimization is formulated as the minimization of a Lagrangian functional, formed …

Monodomain Dynamics For Rigid Rod And Platelet Suspensions In Strongly Coupled Coplanar Linear Flow And Magnetic Fields. Ii. Kinetic Theory, M. Gregory Forest, Sarthok Sircar, Qi Wang, Ruhai Zhou
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
We establish reciprocity relations of the Doi-Hess kinetic theory for rigid rod macromolecular suspensions governed by the strong coupling among an excluded volume potential, linear flow, and a magnetic field. The relation provides a reduction of the flow and field driven Smoluchowski equation: from five parameters for coplanar linear flows and magnetic field, to two field parameters. The reduced model distinguishes flows with a rotational component, which map to simple shear (with rate parameter) subject to a transverse magnetic field (with strength parameter), and irrotational flows, for which the reduced model consists of a triaxial extensional flow (with two extensional …

Melting And Solidification Study Of As-Deposited And Recrystallized Bi Thin Films, M. K. Zayed, H. E. Elsayed-Ali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Melting and solidification of as-deposited and recrystallized Bi crystallites, deposited on highly oriented 002-graphite at 423 K, were studied using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). Films with mean thickness between 1.5 and 33 ML (monolayers) were studied. Ex situ atomic force microscopy was used to study the morphology and the size distribution of the formed nanocrystals. The as-deposited films grew in the form of three-dimensional crystallites with different shapes and sizes, while those recrystallized from the melt were formed in nearly similar shapes but different sizes. The change in the RHEED pattern with temperature was used to probe the melting …
The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray
The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The formal Laplace-Borel transform of an analytic integral operator, known as a Fliess operator, is defined and developed. Then, in conjunction with the composition product over formal power series, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is shown to provide an isomorphism between the semigroup of all Fliess operators under operator composition and the semigroup of all locally convergent formal power series under the composition product. Finally, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is applied in a systems theory setting to explicitly derive the relationship between the formal Laplace transform of the input and output functions of a Fliess operator. This gives a compact interpretation …
Principal Component Regression For Construction Of Wing Weight Estimation Models, Humberto Rocha
Principal Component Regression For Construction Of Wing Weight Estimation Models, Humberto Rocha
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
The multivariate data fitting problem occurs frequently in many branches of science and engineering. It is very easy to fit a data set exactly by a mathematical model no matter how the data points are distributed. But building a response by using a limited number of poorly distributed data points is very unreliable, yet necessary in conceptual design process. This thesis documents the lessons learned from fitting the wing weight data of 41 subsonic transports by three types of interpolation methods---least polynomial interpolation, radial basis function interpolation, and Kriging interpolation. The objective of this thesis is to develop an automatic …
Statistical Analysis Of Longitudinal And Multivariate Discrete Data, Deepak Mav
Statistical Analysis Of Longitudinal And Multivariate Discrete Data, Deepak Mav
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Correlated multivariate Poisson and binary variables occur naturally in medical, biological and epidemiological longitudinal studies. Modeling and simulating such variables is difficult because the correlations are restricted by the marginal means via Fréchet bounds in a complicated way. In this dissertation we will first discuss partially specified models and methods for estimating the regression and correlation parameters. We derive the asymptotic distributions of these parameter estimates. Using simulations based on extensions of the algorithm due to Sim (1993, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 47, pp. 1–10), we study the performance of these estimates using infeasibility, coverage probabilities of the …
The Straggling Green's Function Method For Ion Transport, Steven Andrew Walker
The Straggling Green's Function Method For Ion Transport, Steven Andrew Walker
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
For many years work has been conducted on developing a concise theory and method for HZE ion transport capable of being validated in the laboratory. Previous attempts have ignored dispersion and energy downshift associated with nuclear fragmentation and energy and range straggling. Here we present a Green's function approach to ion transport that incorporates these missing elements. This work forms the basis for a new version of GRNTRN, a Green's function transport code. Comparisons of GRNTRN predictions and laboratory results for an 56Fe ion beam with average energy at the target of one GeV/amu or more are presented for …

Kinetic Structure Simulations Of Nematic Polymers In Plane Couette Cells. Ii: In-Plane Structure Transitions, M. Gregory Forest, Ruhai Zhou, Qi Wang
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Nematic, or liquid crystalline, polymer (LCP) composites are composed of large aspect ratio rod-like or platelet macromolecules. This class of nanocomposites exhibits tremendous potential for high performance material applications, ranging across mechanical, electrical, piezoelectric, thermal, and barrier properties. Fibers made from nematic polymers have set synthetic materials performance standards for decades. The current target is to engineer multifunctional films and molded parts, for which processing flows are shear-dominated. Nematic polymer films inherit anisotropy from collective orientational distributions of the molecular constituents and develop heterogeneity on length scales that are, as yet, not well understood and thereby uncontrollable. Rigid LCPs in …

(First paragraph) Growing up as a child in southern England, my early memories of snow include trudging home from school with my father, gazing at the seemingly enormous snowdrifts that smoothed the hedgerows, fields and bushes, while listening to the soft “scrunch” of the snow under my Wellington boots. In the country, snow stretching as far as I could see was not a particularly uncommon sight. The quietness of the land under a foot of snow seemed eerie. I cannot remember the first time I looked at snowflakes per se; my interests as a small child were primarily in their …
A Template Functional-Gage Design Using Parameter-File Table In Autodesk Inventor, Cheng Lin, Moustafa Moustafa
A Template Functional-Gage Design Using Parameter-File Table In Autodesk Inventor, Cheng Lin, Moustafa Moustafa
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
A systematic approach using Autodesk Inventor to design the functional gages of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) is presented. The gages can be used to check straightness, angularity, perpendicularity, parallelism, and position tolerances of a part when geometric tolerances are specified with Maximum Material Condition (MMC). Four steps are proposed to accomplish the task: (1) creation of two-dimensional (2-D) initial template files, (2) generation of hierarchical folders for the template files, (3) creation a 3-D gage model from a specific template file, and (4) dimensioning and generation of the gage drawing. Results show that, by following this approach, students can …
Cultural Topology: An Introduction To Postmodern Mathematics, Brent M. Blackwell
Cultural Topology: An Introduction To Postmodern Mathematics, Brent M. Blackwell
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[Editors' Introduction]
This essay develops a new way of thinking about the cultural relationships among and within the sciences and the arts through a new understanding of the term postmodernism that at once derives from literary theory and the mathematical discipline of topology. While topology forms the main vertebra of this connective approach in its capacity as the mathematics of connectivity, quantum mechanics and non-Euclidean geometry -- the atlas and axis of this spinal column -- form the context through which this “postmodern” approach will develop. However, in order to position topology as a “postmodern” branch of mathematics, some brief …
Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke
Of Parts And Wholes: Self-Similarity And Synecdoche In Science, Culture And Literature, Dirk Vanderbeke
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[Editors' Introduction]
The discussion here centers on how self-similarity, or parts resembling a whole, has been a recurring aspect in the most diverse fields of human thinking from antiquity to the present. Primary examples are drawn from physics, biology, cybernetics, alchemy, philosophy, myth and, of course, language and literature. The author argues that self-similar patterns are one of the persistent ways in which the human mind structures its experience and knowledge of the world, and then examines some of the questions that arise when an almost ubiquitous concept, structure or linguistic and literary phenomenon resurfaces in a new guise in …
Vector Operations In Superscalar Architectures, Nathan Daniel Flinn
Vector Operations In Superscalar Architectures, Nathan Daniel Flinn
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Vector calculations are very prevalent today. Though the vector-processing computer is quite an old concept, superscalar processors lack hardware support for vector operations. This thesis investigates whether an ordinary superscalar computer architecture can be designed to include hardware support for improved vector operations without drastically changing the existing superscalar design and behavior. A computer architecture design was created and implemented that included the vector multiply (dot product) operation. The design includes a Vector Operations Unit that captures incoming vector operations and generates the necessary set of machine instructions to complete the vector operation internally. It then delivers these instructions to …
Brownian Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Ion Throughput During Cellular Electroporation, Juan A. Gonzalez-Cuevas
Brownian Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Ion Throughput During Cellular Electroporation, Juan A. Gonzalez-Cuevas
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the present research work is to analyze the flow of ions through pores formed in the plasma membrane of biological cells during electroporation. In this regard, simulations have been conducted to track the movement of ions in 3-D space based on a Brownian dynamics model, which is mostly deterministic but has some stochastic properties to account for ionic scattering. From the Brownian dynamics simulations, it has been possible to estimate the pore's conductance as well as transport parameters such as the diffusion coefficient and mobility within the pore region, of which there is no experimental data currently …
