Over the last decade, the Systems Lab at Marquette University has undertaken a grand challenge to positively impact learners and educators in the state of Wisconsin with computer science education innovation. We have moved through a progression in maturity around recognizing the need for and implementing a propagation plan to achieve this desired outcome. This work showcases several novel innovations with increasing overall effectiveness in creating a more diverse community of computer science educators and learners in the state. Considering morbidity, mortality, and annual treatment costs, the dramatic rise in the incidence of sepsis and septic shock among intensive care unit (ICU) admissions in US hospitals is an increasing concern. The recent excruciating statistics regarding sepsis mortality, the average length of hospital stay, and annual treatment costs made sepsis treatment and research a critical domain in medical informatics. The COSMIC: Change Opportunity - Start Masters in Computing graduate curriculum initiative strives to provide a rapid entry pathway to a professional Master of Science (MS) degree for individuals who do not have an undergraduate degree in computing, but who wish to cross over to a career in the computing field. We introduce a flexible lifetime distribution called Burr III-Inverse Weibull (BIII-IW). The new proposed distribution has well-known sub-models. The BIII-IW density function includes exponential, left-skewed, right-skewed and symmetrical shapes. The BIII-IW model’s failure rate can be monotone and non-monotone depending on the parameter values. To show the importance of the BIII-IW distribution, we establish various mathematical properties such as random number generator, ordinary moments, conditional moments, residual life functions, reliability measures and characterizations. With the advancement of high throughput technologies, many repositories of the genome, proteome, transcriptome, and epigenome datasets, called multiple “omes” or multi-omics, are now accessible to researchers worldwide. There are several omics layers, such as gene expression, mutation, copy number aberration, DNA methylation, microRNA (miRNA) expression, and transcription factor binding that are generated from large sets of biospecimens and describe different aspects of the underlying biology. In this dissertation, we develop nonparametric decomposition methods and the subsequent forecasting techniques for functional, time-dependent data known as functional time series (FTS). We use ideas from functional data analysis (FDA) and singular spectrum analysis (SSA) to introduce the nonparametric decomposition method known as functional SSA (FSSA) and its associated forecasting techniques. We also extend these developed methodologies into multivariate FSSA (MFSSA) over different dimensional domains and its subsequent forecasting routines so that we may perform nonparametric decomposition and prediction of multivariate FTS (MFTS). We propose a new four-parameter lifetime model with flexible hazard rate called the Burr XII Power Cauchy (BXII-PC) distribution. We derive the BXII-PC distribution via (i) the T-X family technique and (ii) nexus between the exponential and gamma variables. The new proposed distribution is flexible as it has famous sub-models such as Burr XII-half Cauchy, Lomax-power Cauchy, Lomax-half Cauchy, Log-logistic-power Cauchy, log-logistic-half Cauchy. In this study, a new flexible lifetime model called Burr XII moment exponential (BXII-ME) distribution is introduced. We derive some of its mathematical properties including the ordinary moments, conditional moments, reliability measures and characterizations. We employ different estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood, maximum product spacings, least squares, weighted least squares, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling methods for estimating the model parameters. We perform simulation studies on the basis of the graphical results to see the performance of the above estimators of the BXII-ME distribution. Certain characterizations of the discrete Lindley and discrete Poisson-Lindley distributions, originally introduced by Bakouch, Jazi and Nadarjah (2014) and Sankaran (1970), respectively, are presented. Al-Babtain, Gemeay and Afify (2020) revisited these distributions and provided estimation methods and actuarial measures as well as their applications in medicine. This short note is intended to complete, in some way, Al-Babtain, Gemeay and Afify (2020)’s work. It should be mentioned that the probability mass functions reported in the two papers mentioned above are not correct. In this note, it will be explained why they are not correct.

This exploratory study examined prospective elementary teachers’ (PSTs’) number and operation sense (NOS) in the context of solving problems with fractions. Drawing on the existing literature, we identified seven skills that characterize fraction-related NOS. We analyzed 230 responses to 23 tasks completed by 10 PSTs for evidence of PSTs’ use of different fraction-related NOS skills. The analysis revealed that PSTs did not use all seven fraction-related NOS skills to the same extent. PSTs’ responses documented their frequent reasoning about the meaning of symbols and formal mathematical language in the context of fractions. To a lesser extent, PSTs’ responses documented their …

We introduce a new distribution, so called A new generalized modified Weibull (NGMW) distribution. Various structural properties of the distribution are obtained in terms of Meijer’s G–function, such as moments, moment generating function, conditional moments, mean deviations, order statistics and maximum likelihood estimators. The distribution exhibits a wide range of shapes with varying skewness and assumes all possible forms of hazard rate function. Heavy tailed distributions are useful for modeling actuarial and financial risk management problems. Actuaries often search for finding distributions that provide the best fit to heavy tailed data sets. In the present work, we introduce a new class of heavy tailed distributions of a special sub-model of the proposed family, called a new extended alpha power transformed Weibull distribution, useful for modeling heavy tailed data sets. In this paper a new method of introducing an additional parameter to a continuous distribution is proposed, which leads to a new class of distributions, called the weighted exponentiated family. A special sub-model is discussed. General expressions for some of the mathematical properties of this class such as the moments, quantile function, generating function and order statistics are derived; and certain characterizations are also discussed. Consequently, the choice of the most suitable statistical distribution for modeling given data is very important. In modern data, when predictors are matrix/array‐valued, building a reasonable model is much more difficult due to the complicate structure. However, dimension folding that reduces the predictor dimensions while keeps its structure is critical in helping to build a useful model. In this paper, we develop a new sufficient dimension folding method using distance covariance for regression in such a case. The method works efficiently without strict assumptions on the predictors. It is model‐free and nonparametric, but neither smoothing techniques nor selection of tuning parameters is needed. Moreover, it works for both univariate and multivariate response cases. We propose a lifetime distribution with flexible hazard rate called cubic rank transmuted modified Burr III (CRTMBIII) distribution. We develop the proposed distribution on the basis of the cubic ranking transmutation map. The density function of CRTMBIII is symmetrical, right-skewed, left-skewed, exponential, arc, J and bimodal shaped. We study a new family of distributions defined by the minimum of the Poisson random number of independent identically distributed random variables having a Topp Leone-G distribution (see Rezaei et al., (2016)). Some mathematical properties of the new family including ordinary and incomplete moments, quantile and generating functions, mean deviations, order statistics, reliability and entropies are derived. Maximum likelihood estimation of the model parameters is investigated. Some special models of the new family are discussed. An application is carried out on real data set applications sets to show the potentiality of the proposed family.

Although research and policy documents provide recommendations to inform secondary mathematics teacher preparation, no single study has addressed the “big ideas” of courses in multiple programs and how those big ideas may be interpreted through the lens of recent research and policy documents. Although several studies provide diverse insights into teaching and learning mathematical modeling, research has yet to be conducted on the mathematical modeling learning opportunities available to secondary mathematics preservice teachers (PTs) in mathematics and education courses in teacher education programs. The design and performance of the active complex electrode (ACE1) electrical impedance tomography system for single-ended phasic voltage measurements are presented. The design of the hardware and calibration procedures allows for reconstruction of conductivity and permittivity images. Phase measurement is achieved with the ACE1 active electrode circuit which measures the amplitude and phase of the voltage and the applied current at the location at which current is injected into the body. A new family of distributions called the Topp-Leone generalized odd log-logistic-G family is introduced and studied. We provide some mathematical properties of the new family including ordinary and incomplete moments, generating function and order statistics. We assess the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators in terms of biases and mean squared errors by means of two simulation studies. Finally, the usefulness of the family is il lustrated by means of two real data sets. The new model provides consistently better fits than other competitive models for these data sets.

We study some mathematical properties of a new generator of continuous distributions called the Odd Nadarajah-Haghighi (ONH) family. In particular, three special models in this family are investigated, namely the ONH gamma, beta and Weibull distributions. The family density function is given as a linear combination of exponentiated densities. Further, we propose a bivariate extension and various characterization results of the new family. We determine the maximum likelihood estimates of ONH parameters for complete and censored data. We provide a simulation study to verify the precision of these estimates. Any space homeomorphic to one of the standard subcontinua of the Stone-Čech remainder of the real half-line is called an ultra-arc. Alternatively, an ultra-arc may be viewed as an ultracopower of the real unit interval via a free ultrafilter on a countable set. It is known that any continuum of weight is a continuous image of any ultra-arc; in this paper we address the problem of which continua are continuous images under special maps. Here are some of the results we present.

In this paper, a new five-parameter extended Burr XII model called new modified Singh-Maddala (NMSM) is developed from cumulative hazard function of the modified log extended integrated beta hazard (MLEIBH) model. The NMSM density function is left-skewed, right-skewed and symmetrical. The Lambert W function is used to study descriptive measures based on quantile, moments, and moments of order statistics, incomplete moments, inequality measures and residual life function. Different reliability and uncertainty measures are also theoretically established. Standard analyses applied to genome-wide association data are well designed to detect additive effects of moderate strength. However, the power for standard genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses to identify effects from recessive diplotypes is not typically high. We proposed and conducted a gene-based compound heterozygosity test to reveal additional genes underlying complex diseases. With this approach applied to iron overload, a strong association signal was identified between the fibroblast growth factor–encoding gene, FGF6, and hemochromatosis in the central Wisconsin population. Functional validation showed that fibroblast growth factor 6 protein (FGF-6) regulates iron homeostasis and induces transcriptional regulation of hepcidin. …

In this paper, we introduce a new three-parameter generalized version of the Gompertz model called the odd log-logistic Gompertz (OLLGo) distribution. It includes some well-known lifetime distributions such as Gompertz (Go) and odd log-logistic exponential (OLLE) as special sub-models. This new distribution is quite flexible and can be used effectively in modeling survival data and reliability problems. It can have a decreasing, increasing and bathtub-shaped failure rate function depending on its parameters. In this paper, a flexible lifetime distribution called Cubic rank transmuted modified Burr III-Pareto (CRTMBIII-P) is developed on the basis of the cubic ranking transmutation map. The density function of CRTMBIII-P is arc, exponential, left-skewed, right-skewed and symmetrical shaped. Descriptive measures such as moments, incomplete moments, inequality measures, residual life function and reliability measures are theoretically established. The CRTMBIII-P distribution is characterized via ratio of truncated moments. Parameters of the CRTMBIII-P distribution are estimated using maximum likelihood method. The simulation study for the performance of the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the parameters of the CRTMBIII-P distribution is carried out. …
