Terminal Summation: Extending The Concept Of Convergence, Max Tran, Ayalur Krishnan Jan 2014

Terminal Summation: Extending The Concept Of Convergence, Max Tran, Ayalur Krishnan

Publications and Research

This paper presents an atypical method for summing divergent series, and provides a sum for the divergent series log(n). We use an idea of T.E. Phipps, called Terminal Summation, which uses asymptotic analysis to assign a value to divergent series. The method associates a series to an appropriate difference equations having boundary conditions at infinity, and solves the difference equations which then provide a value for the original series. We point out connections between Phipps' method, the Euler-MacLaurin sum formula, the Ramanujan sum and other traditional methods for summing divergent series.

A Primer For Mathematical Modeling, Marla A. Sole Oct 2013

A Primer For Mathematical Modeling, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

With the implementation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommendations and the adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, modeling has moved to the forefront of K-12 education. Modeling activities not only reinforce purposeful problem-solving skills, they also connect the mathematics students learn in school with the mathematics they will use outside of school. Instructors have found mathematical modeling difficult to teach. To successfully incorporate modeling activities I believe that curricular changes should be accompanied by professional development for curriculum developers, classroom teachers, and higher education professionals. This article serves as an introduction to modeling by …

The Use Of Statistics In Experimental Physics, Thomas J. Pfaff, Maksim Sipos, M. C. Sullivan, B. G. Thompson, Max Tran

Publications and Research

Most mathematicians are aware of the importance of statistics in biological sciences, business, and economics, but are less aware that statistics is used every day in experimental physics. This paper gives three interesting examples of how statistics plays a vital role in physics. These examples use the basic statistical tools of residuals analysis and goodness of fit.

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Ii: Theory And Classification, Nataniel Greene Jan 2013

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Ii: Theory And Classification, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

In the first paper of this series, a variety of known and new symmetric and weighted least-squares regression methods were presented with efficient derivations. This paper continues and generalizes the previous work with a theory for deriving, analyzing, and classifying all symmetric and weighted least-squares regression methods.

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions I: Efficient Derivations, Nataniel Greene Jan 2013

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions I: Efficient Derivations, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

Ordinary least-squares regression suffers from a fundamental lack of symmetry: the regression line of y given x and the regression line of x given y are not inverses of each other. Alternative symmetric regression methods have been developed to address this concern, notably: orthogonal regression and geometric mean regression. This paper presents in detail a variety of least squares regression methods which may not have been known or fully explicated. The derivation of each method is made efficient through the use of Ehrenberg's formula for the ordinary least-squares error and through the extraction of a weight function g(b) which characterizes …

Elementary College Geometry, Henry Africk Jan 2013

Elementary College Geometry, Henry Africk

Open Educational Resources

This text is intended for a brief introductory course in plane geometry. It covers the topics from elementary geometry that are most likely to be required for more advanced mathematics courses. The only prerequisite is a semester of algebra.

The emphasis is on applying basic geometric principles to the numerical solution of problems. For this purpose the number of theorems and definitions is kept small. Proofs are short and intuitive, mostly in the style of those found in a typical trigonometry or precalculus text. There is little attempt to teach theorem-proving or formal methods of reasoning. However the topics are …

Pricing Options On Foreign Currency With A Preset Exchange Rate, Avner Wolf, Christopher Heseel Aug 2012

Pricing Options On Foreign Currency With A Preset Exchange Rate, Avner Wolf, Christopher Heseel

Publications and Research

This paper presents a new option that can be used by agents for managing foreign exchange risk. Unlike the Garman Kolhagen model [1], (GK), this paper presents a new model with a preset exchange rate (PE), that allows the agent to take advantage of the his/her view on both the direction and magnitude of rate movement and as such provides this agent with more choices. The model has a provision for an automatic exchange of the payoff at a preset exchange rate, and upon expiration gives the agent the choice of keeping the payoff in the foreign currency or exchanging …

The Mathematics Portfolio: An Alternative Tool To Evaluate Students’ Progress, Marla A. Sole Apr 2012

The Mathematics Portfolio: An Alternative Tool To Evaluate Students’ Progress, Marla A. Sole

Publications and Research

This article describes the need for more thorough and varied forms of assessment to evaluate students’ level of understanding in mathematics. Portfolios are one type of assessment tool that, when added to a teacher’s repertoire can improve students’ comprehension and retention and enable students to monitor their own progress and to take more responsibility for their own learning. Portfolio assignments can also help students and teachers to detect and remedy weaknesses and misunderstandings and can increase students’ self-confidence in mathematics. This article discusses what a portfolio is, gives an example of a unit portfolio used in an undergraduate Finite Mathematics …

The Minimum Of The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Numbers Of Small Cubic Graphs, Matthew Alpert, Jens-P. Bode, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth

Publications and Research

Here we consider the minimum of the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers for all d-regular graphs of order n. The case of connected graphs only is investigated also. For d = 3 exact values are determined for n are less than or equal to 12 and some estimations are given in general.

Homogeneous Besov Spaces On Stratified Lie Groups And Their Wavelet Characterization, Hartmut Fuhr, Azita Mayeli Jan 2012

Homogeneous Besov Spaces On Stratified Lie Groups And Their Wavelet Characterization, Hartmut Fuhr, Azita Mayeli

Publications and Research

We establish wavelet characterizations of homogeneous Besov spaces on stratified Lie groups, bothin terms of continuous and discrete wavelet systems. We first introduce a notion of homogeneous Besov space ̇Bsp,qin terms of a Littlewood-Paley-type decomposition, in analogy to the well-known characterization of the Euclidean case. Such decompositions can be defined via the spectral measure of a suitably chosen sub-Laplacian. We prove that the scale of Besov spaces is independent of the precise choice of Littlewood-Paley decomposition. In particular, different sub-Laplacians yield the same Besov spaces. We then turn to wavelet characterizations, first via continuous wavelet transforms which can be viewed …

Equivariant Degenerations Of Spherical Modules For Groups Of Type A, Stavros Argyrios Papadakis, Bart Van Steirteghem

Publications and Research

Let G be a complex reductive algebraic group. Fix a Borel subgroup B of G and a maximal torus T in B. Call the monoid of dominant weights L+ and let S be a finitely generated submonoid of L+. V. Alexeev and M. Brion introduced a moduli scheme MS which classifies affine G-varieties X equipped with a T-equivariant isomorphism SpecC[X]U → SpecC[S], where U is the unipotent radical of B. Examples of MS have been obtained by S. Jansou, P. Bravi and S. Cupit-Foutou. In this paper, we prove that MS is isomorphic to an affine space when S is …

Reducibility, Degree Spectra, And Lowness In Algebraic Structures, Rebecca M. Steiner Jan 2012

Reducibility, Degree Spectra, And Lowness In Algebraic Structures, Rebecca M. Steiner

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation addresses questions in computable structure theory, which is a branch of mathematical logic hybridizing computability theory and the study of familiar mathematical structures. We focus on algebraic structures, which are standard topics of discussion among model theorists. The structures examined here are fields, graphs, trees under a predecessor function, and Boolean algebras.

For a computable field F, the splitting set SF of F is the set of polynomials in F[X] which factor over F, and the root set RF of F is the set of polynomials in F[X] which have a root in F …

Noncomputable Functions In The Blub-Shub-Smale Model, Wesley Calvert, Ken Kramer, Russell Miller May 2011

Noncomputable Functions In The Blub-Shub-Smale Model, Wesley Calvert, Ken Kramer, Russell Miller

Publications and Research

Working in the Blum-Shub-Smale model of computation on the real numbers, we answer several questions of Meer and Ziegler. First, we show that, for each natural number d, an oracle for the set of algebraic real numbers of degree at most d is insufficient to allow an oracle BSS-machine to decide membership in the set of algebraic numbers of degree d + 1. We add a number of further results on relative computability of these sets and their unions. Then we show that the halting problem for BSS-computation is not decidable below any countable oracle set, and give a more …

The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number Of The Wheel Graph, Elie Feder Jan 2011

The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number Of The Wheel Graph, Elie Feder

Publications and Research

We find and prove the maximum rectilinear crossing number of the wheel graph. First, we illustrate a picture of the wheel graph with many crossings to prove a lower bound. We then prove that this bound is sharp. The treatment is divided into two cases for n even and n odd.

Holomorphic Motions And Extremal Annuli, Zhe Wang Jan 2011

Holomorphic Motions And Extremal Annuli, Zhe Wang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Holomorphic motions, soon after they were introduced, became an important subject in complex analysis. It is now an important tool in the study of complex dynamical systems and in the study of Teichmuller theory. This thesis serves on two purposes: an expository of the past developments and a discovery of new theories.

First, I give an expository account of Slodkowski's theorem based on the proof given by Chirka. Then I present a result about infinitesimal holomorphic motions. I prove the |ε log ε| modulus of continuity for any infinitesimal holomorphic motion. This proof is a very well application of Schwarz's …

Graphs Of Bounded Degree And The P-Harmonic Boundary, Michael J. Puls Dec 2010

Graphs Of Bounded Degree And The P-Harmonic Boundary, Michael J. Puls

Publications and Research

Let p be a real number greater than one and let G be a connected graph of bounded degree. We introduce the p-harmonic boundary of G and use it to characterize the graphs G for which the constant functions are the only p-harmonic functions on G. We show that any continuous function on the p-harmonic boundary of G can be extended to a function that is p-harmonic on G. We also give some properties of this boundary that are preserved under rough-isometries. Now let Gamma be a finitely generated group. As an application of our results, we characterize the vanishing …

Multiresolution Inverse Wavelet Reconstruction From A Fourier Partial Sum, Nataniel Greene Jan 2010

Multiresolution Inverse Wavelet Reconstruction From A Fourier Partial Sum, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

The Gibbs phenomenon refers to the lack of uniform convergence which occurs in many orthogonal basis approximations to piecewise smooth functions. This lack of uniform convergence manifests itself in spurious oscillations near the points of discontinuity and a low order of convergence away from the discontinuities. In previous work [11,12] we described a numerical procedure for overcoming the Gibbs phenomenon called the Inverse Wavelet Reconstruction method (IWR). The method takes the Fourier coefficients of an oscillatory partial sum and uses them to construct the wavelet coefficients of a non-oscillatory wavelet series. However, we only described the method standard wavelet series and …

The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number Of The Petersen Graph, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth, Steven Herzberg, Sheldon Klein Jan 2010

The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number Of The Petersen Graph, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth, Steven Herzberg, Sheldon Klein

Publications and Research

We prove that the maximum rectilinear crossing number of the Petersen graph is 49. First, we illustrate a picture of the Petersen graph with 49 crossings to prove the lower bound. We then prove that this bound is sharp by carefully analyzing the ten Cs's which occur in the Petersen graph and their properties.

The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number Of The N Dimensional Cube Graph, Matthew Alpert, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth, Sheldon Klein Mar 2009

The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Number Of The N Dimensional Cube Graph, Matthew Alpert, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth, Sheldon Klein

Publications and Research

We find a.nd prove the maximum rectilinear crossing n1.1mber of the three-dimensional cube graph (Q3). We demonstrate a method of drawing then-cube graph, Qn., with many crossings, and thus find a lower bound for the maximum rectilinear crossing number of Qn. We conjecture that this bound is sharp. We also prove an upper bound for the maximum rectilinear crossing number of Qn.

The Maximum Of The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Numbers Of D-Regular Graphs Of Order N, Matthew Alpert, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth Jan 2009

The Maximum Of The Maximum Rectilinear Crossing Numbers Of D-Regular Graphs Of Order N, Matthew Alpert, Elie Feder, Heiko Harborth

Publications and Research

We extend known results regarding the maximum rectilinear crossing number of the cycle graph (Cn) and the complete graph (Kn ) to the class of general d-regular graphs Rn,d. We present the generalized star drawings of the d-regular graphs Sn,d of order n where n + d ≡ 1 (mod 2) and prove that they maximize the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers. A star-like drawing of Sn,d for n ≡ d ≡ 0 (mod 2) is introduced and we conjecture that this drawing maximizes the maximum rectilinear crossing numbers, too. We offer a simpler proof of two results initially proved by …

The Orchard Crossing Number Of An Abstract Graph, Elie Feder, David Garber Jan 2009

The Orchard Crossing Number Of An Abstract Graph, Elie Feder, David Garber

Publications and Research

.We introduce the Orchard crossing number, which is defined in a similar way to the well-known rectilinear crossing number. We compute the Orchard crossing number for some simple families of graphs. We also prove some properties of this crossing number.

Moreover, we define a variant of this crossing number which is tightly connected to the rectilinear crossing number, and compute it for some simple families of graphs.

On The Dynamics Of Quasi-Self-Matings Of Generalized Starlike Complex Quadratics And The Structure Of The Mated Julia Sets, Ross Flek Jan 2009

On The Dynamics Of Quasi-Self-Matings Of Generalized Starlike Complex Quadratics And The Structure Of The Mated Julia Sets, Ross Flek

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

It has been shown that, in many cases, Julia sets of complex polynomials can be "glued" together to obtain a new Julia set homeomorphic to a Julia set of a rational map; the dynamics of the two polynomials are reflected in the dynamics of the mated rational map. Here, I investigate the Julia sets of self-matings of generalized starlike quadratic polynomials, which enjoy relatively simple combinatorics. The points in the Julia sets of the mated rational maps are completely classified according to their topology. The presence and location of buried points in these Julia sets are addressed. The interconnections between …

Methods Of Assessing And Ranking Probable Sources Of Error, Nataniel Greene May 2008

Methods Of Assessing And Ranking Probable Sources Of Error, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

A classical method for ranking n potential events as sources of error is Bayes' theorem. However, a ranking based on Bayes' theorem lacks a fundamental symmetry: the ranking in terms of blame for error will not be the reverse of the ranking in terms of credit for lack of error. While this is not a flaw in Bayes' theorem, it does lead one to inquire whether there are related methods which have such symmetry. Related methods explored here include the logical version of Bayes' theorem based on probabilities of conditionals, probabilities of biconditionals, and ratios or differences of credit to …

An Overview Of Conditionals And Biconditionals In Probability, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

Conditional and biconditional statements are a standard part of symbolic logic but they have only recently begun to be explored in probability for applications in artificial intelligence. Here we give a brief overview of the major theorems involved and illustrate them using two standard model problems from conditional probability.

Fourier Series Of Orthogonal Polynomials, Nataniel Greene Feb 2008

Fourier Series Of Orthogonal Polynomials, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

Explicit formulas for the Fourier coefficients of the Legendre polynomials can be found in the Bateman Manuscript Project. However, similar formulas for more general classes of orthogonal polynomials do not appear to have been worked out. Here we derive explicit formulas for the Fourier series of Gegenbauer, Jacobi, Laguerre and Hermite polynomials.

The methods described here apply in principle to a class of polynomials, including non-orthogonal polynomials.
