Krein Reproducing Kernel Modules In Clifford Analysis, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kähler
Krein Reproducing Kernel Modules In Clifford Analysis, Daniel Alpay, Paula Cerejeiras, Uwe Kähler
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Classic hypercomplex analysis is intimately linked with elliptic operators, such as the Laplacian or the Dirac operator, and positive quadratic forms. But there are many applications like the crystallographic X-ray transform or the ultrahyperbolic Dirac operator which are closely connected with indefinite quadratic forms. Although appearing in many papers in such cases Hilbert modules are not the right choice as function spaces since they do not reflect the induced geometry. In this paper we are going to show that Clifford-Krein modules are naturally appearing in this context. Even taking into account the difficulties, e.g., the existence of different inner products …
New Characterizations Of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces And Applications To Metric Geometry, Daniel Alpay, Palle E. T. Jorgensen
New Characterizations Of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces And Applications To Metric Geometry, Daniel Alpay, Palle E. T. Jorgensen
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We give two new global and algorithmic constructions of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated to a positive definite kernel. We further present a general positive definite kernel setting using bilinear forms, and we provide new examples. Our results cover the case of measurable positive definite kernels, and we give applications to both stochastic analysis and metric geometry and provide a number of examples.

The Agnostic Structure Of Data Science Methods, Domenico Napoletani, Marco Panza, Daniele Struppa

In this paper we argue that data science is a coherent and novel approach to empirical problems that, in its most general form, does not build understanding about phenomena. Within the new type of mathematization at work in data science, mathematical methods are not selected because of any relevance for a problem at hand; mathematical methods are applied to a specific problem only by `forcing’, i.e. on the basis of their ability to reorganize the data for further analysis and the intrinsic richness of their mathematical structure. In particular, we argue that deep learning neural networks are best understood within …
On The Menger And Almost Menger Properties In Locales, Tilahun Bayih, Themba Dube, Oghenetega Ighedo
On The Menger And Almost Menger Properties In Locales, Tilahun Bayih, Themba Dube, Oghenetega Ighedo
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
The Menger and the almost Menger properties are extended to locales. Regarding the former, the extension is conservative (meaning that a space is Menger if and only if it is Menger as a locale), and the latter is conservative for sober TD-spaces. Non-spatial Menger (and hence almost Menger) locales do exist, so that the extensions genuinely transcend the topological notions. We also consider projectively Menger locales, and show that, as in spaces, a locale is Menger precisely when it is Lindelöf and projectively Menger. Transference of these properties along localic maps (via direct image or pullback) is considered.

Superoscillations And Analytic Extension In Schur Analysis, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We give applications of the theory of superoscillations to various questions, namely extension of positive definite functions, interpolation of polynomials and also of Rfunctions; we also discuss possible applications to signal theory and prediction theory of stationary stochastic processes. In all cases, we give a constructive procedure, by way of a limiting process, to get the required results.

Infinite-Order Differential Operators Acting On Entire Hyperholomorphic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Stefano Pinton, Irene Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Infinite-order differential operators appear in different fields of mathematics and physics and in the past decade they turned out to be of fundamental importance in the study of the evolution of superoscillations as initial datum for Schrödinger equation. Inspired by the operators arising in quantum mechanics, in this paper, we investigate the continuity of a class of infinite-order differential operators acting on spaces of entire hyperholomorphic functions. We will consider two classes of hyperholomorphic functions, both being natural extensions of holomorphic functions of one complex variable. We show that, even though these two notions of hyperholomorphic functions are quite different …
Frege’S Theory Of Real Numbers: A Consistent Rendering, Francesca Boccuni, Marco Panza
Frege’S Theory Of Real Numbers: A Consistent Rendering, Francesca Boccuni, Marco Panza
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Frege’s definition of the real numbers, as envisaged in the second volume of Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, is fatally flawed by the inconsistency of Frege’s ill-fated Basic Law V. We restate Frege’s definition in a consistent logical framework and investigate whether it can provide a logical foundation of real analysis. Our conclusion will deem it doubtful that such a foundation along the lines of Frege’s own indications is possible at all.

Total Differentiability And Monogenicity For Functions In Algebras Of Order 4, I. Sabadini, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we discuss some notions of analyticity in associative algebras with unit. We also recall some basic tool in algebraic analysis and we use them to study the properties of analytic functions in two algebras of dimension four that played a relevant role in some work of the Italian school, but that have never been fully investigated.

We prove that the lattice reduct of every lattice-ordered pregroup is semidistributive. This is a consequence of a certain weak form of the distributive law which holds in lattice-ordered pregroups.

Boxes, Extended Boxes And Sets Of Positive Upper Density In The Euclidean Space, Polona Durcik, Vjekoslav Kovač
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We prove that sets with positive upper Banach density in sufficiently large dimensions contain congruent copies of all sufficiently large dilates of three specific higher-dimensional patterns. These patterns are: 2n vertices of a fixed n-dimensional rectangular box, the same vertices extended with n points completing three-term arithmetic progressions, and the same vertices extended with n points completing three-point corners. Our results provide common generalizations of several Euclidean density theorems from the literature.

Green's Function For The Schrodinger Equation With A Generalized Point Interaction And Stability Of Superoscillations, Yakir Aharonov, Jussi Behrndt, Fabrizio Colombo, Peter Schlosser
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we study the time dependent Schrödinger equation with all possible self-adjoint singular interactions located at the origin, which include the δ and δ'-potentials as well as boundary conditions of Dirichlet, Neumann, and Robin type as particular cases. We derive an explicit representation of the time dependent Green's function and give a mathematical rigorous meaning to the corresponding integral for holomorphic initial conditions, using Fresnel integrals. Superoscillatory functions appear in the context of weak measurements in quantum mechanics and are naturally treated as holomorphic entire functions. As an application of the Green's function we study the stability …
Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa
Diagrams In Intra-Configurational Analysis, Marco Panza, Gianluca Longa
MPP Published Research
In this paper we would like to attempt to shed some light on the way in which diagrams enter into the practice of ancient Greek geometrical analysis. To this end, we will first distinguish two main forms of this practice, i.e., trans-configurational and intra-configurational. We will then argue that, while in the former diagrams enter in the proof essentially in the same way (mutatis mutandis) they enter in canonical synthetic demonstrations, in the latter, they take part in the analytic argument in a specific way, which has no correlation in other aspects of classical geometry. In intra-configurational analysis, diagrams represent …

Analysis, Constructions And Diagrams In Classical Geometry, Marco Panza

Greek ancient and early modern geometry necessarily uses diagrams. Among other things, these enter geometrical analysis. The paper distinguishes two sorts of geometrical analysis and shows that in one of them, dubbed “intra-confgurational” analysis, some diagrams necessarily enter as outcomes of a purely material gesture, namely not as result of a codifed constructive procedure, but as result of a free-hand drawing.
Quantitatively Hyper-Positive Real Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz
Quantitatively Hyper-Positive Real Functions, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Hyper-positive real, matrix-valued, rational functions are associated with absolute stability (the Lurie problem). Here, quantitative subsets of Hyper-positive functions, related through nested inclusions, are introduced. Structurally, this family of functions turns out to be matrix-convex and closed under inversion.
A state-space characterization of these functions through a corresponding Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma, is given. Technically, the classical Linear Matrix Inclusions, associated with passive systems, are here substituted by Quadratic Matrix Inclusions.

On The Global Operator And Fueter Mapping Theorem For Slice Polyanalytic Functions, Daniel Alpay, Kamal Diki, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper, we prove that slice polyanalytic functions on quaternions can be considered as solutions of a power of some special global operator with nonconstant coefficients as it happens in the case of slice hyperholomorphic functions. We investigate also an extension version of the Fueter mapping theorem in this polyanalytic setting. In particular, we show that under axially symmetric conditions it is always possible to construct Fueter regular and poly-Fueter regular functions through slice polyanalytic ones using what we call the poly-Fueter mappings. We study also some integral representations of these results on the quaternionic unit ball.

The de Rham cohomology of a manifold is a homotopy invariant that expresses basic topological information about smooth manifolds. The q-th de Rham cohomology of the n-dimensional Euclidean space is the vector space defined by the closed q-forms over the exact q-forms. Furthermore, the support of a continuous function f on a topological space X is the closure of the set on which f is nonzero. The result of restricting the definition of the de Rham cohomology to functions with compact support is called the de Rham cohomology with compact support, or the compact cohomology. The concept of cohomology can …

The Poincaré Duality Theorem And Its Applications, Natanael Alpay, Melissa Sugimoto, Mihaela Vajiac
SURF Posters and Papers
In this talk I will explain the duality between the deRham cohomology of a manifold M and the compactly supported cohomology on the same space. This phenomenon is entitled “Poincaré duality” and it describes a general occurrence in differential topology, a duality between spaces of closed, exact differentiable forms on a manifold and their compactly supported counterparts. In order to define and prove this duality I will start with the simple definition of the dual space of a vector space, with the definition of a positive definite inner product on a vector space, then define the concept of a manifold. …

Using the notion of commutative operator vessels, this work investigates de Branges-Rovnyak spaces whose elements are sections of a line bundle of multiplicative half-order differentials on a compact real Riemann surface. As a special case, we obtain a Beurling-Lax type theorem in the setting of the corresponding Hardy space on a finite bordered Riemann surface.
Exact And Strongly Exact Filters, M. A. Moshier, A. Pultr, A. L. Suarez
Exact And Strongly Exact Filters, M. A. Moshier, A. Pultr, A. L. Suarez
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
A meet in a frame is exact if it join-distributes with every element, it is strongly exact if it is preserved by every frame homomorphism. Hence, finite meets are (strongly) exact which leads to the concept of an exact resp. strongly exact filter, a filter closed under exact resp. strongly exact meets. It is known that the exact filters constitute a frame FiltE(L) somewhat surprisingly isomorphic to the frame of joins of closed sublocales. In this paper we present a characteristic of the coframe of meets of open sublocales as the dual to the frame of strongly exact filters FiltsE(L).

On Pseudo-Spectral Factorization Over The Complex Numbers And Quaternions, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Izchak Lewkowicz, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
This paper is a continuation of the research of our previous work[5] and considers quaternionic generalized Carathéodory functions and the related family of generalized positive functions. It is addressed to a wide audience which includes researchers in complex and hypercomplex analysis, in the theory of linear systems, but also electric engineers. For this reason it includes some results on generalized Carathéodory functions and their factorization in the classic complex case which might be of independent interest. An important new result is a pseudo-spectral factorization and we also discuss some interpolation problems in the class of quaternionic generalized positive functions.

We consider the evolution, for a time-dependent Schrödinger equation, of the so-called Dirac comb. We show how this evolution allows us to recover explicitly (indeed optically) the values of the quadratic generalized Gauss sums. Moreover we use the phenomenon of superoscillatory sequences to prove that such Gauss sums can be asymptotically recovered from the values of the spectrum of any sufficiently regular function compactly supported on R. The fundamental tool we use is the so called Galilean transform that was introduced and studied in the context on non-linear time dependent Schrödinger equations. Furthermore, we utilize this tool to understand in …

On The Extension Of Positive Definite Kernels To Topological Algebras, Daniel Alpay, Ismael L. Paiva
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We define an extension of operator-valued positive definite functions from the real or complex setting to topological algebras and describe their associated reproducing kernel spaces. The case of entire functions is of special interest, and we give a precise meaning to some power series expansions of analytic functions that appears in many algebras.

The Structure Of Generalized Bi-Algebras And Weakening Relation Algebras, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Generalized bunched implication algebras (GBI-algebras) are defined as residuated lattices with a Heyting implication, and are positioned between Boolean algebras with operators and lattices with operators. We characterize congruences on GBI-algebras by filters that are closed under Gumm–Ursini terms, and for involutive GBI-algebras these terms simplify to a dual version of the congruence term for relation algebras together with two more terms. We prove that representable weakening relation algebras form a variety of cyclic involutive GBI-algebras, denoted by RWkRA, containing the variety of representable relation algebras. We describe a double-division conucleus construction on residuated lattices and on (cyclic involutive) GBI-algebras …

Realizations Of Holomorphic And Slice Hyperholomorphic Functions: The Krein Space Case, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we treat realization results for operator-valued functions which are analytic in the complex sense or slice hyperholomorphic over the quaternions. In the complex setting, we prove a realization theorem for an operator-valued function analytic in a neighborhood of the origin with a coisometric state space operator thus generalizing an analogous result in the unitary case. A main difference with previous works is the use of reproducing kernel Krein spaces. We then prove the counterpart of this result in the quaternionic setting. The present work is the first paper which presents a realization theorem with a state space …

Acoustic Versus Electromagnetic Field Theory: Scalar, Vector, Spinor Representations And The Emergence Of Acoustic Spin, Lucas Burns, Konstantin Y. Bliokh, Franco Nori, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We construct a novel Lagrangian representation of acoustic field theory that describes the local vector properties of longitudinal (curl-free) acoustic fields. In particular, this approach accounts for the recently-discovered nonzero spin angular momentum density in inhomogeneous sound fields in fluids or gases. The traditional acoustic Lagrangian representation with a scalar potential is unable to describe such vector properties of acoustic fields adequately, which are however observable via local radiation forces and torques on small probe particles. By introducing a displacement vector potential analogous to the electromagnetic vector potential, we derive the appropriate canonical momentum and spin densities as conserved Noether …

Structure Theorems For Idempotent Residuated Lattices, José Gil-Férez, Peter Jipsen, George Metcalfe
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we study structural properties of residuated lattices that are idempotent as monoids. We provide descriptions of the totally ordered members of this class and obtain counting theorems for the number of finite algebras in various subclasses. We also establish the finite embeddability property for certain varieties generated by classes of residuated lattices that are conservative in the sense that monoid multiplication always yields one of its arguments. We then make use of a more symmetric version of Raftery’s characterization theorem for totally ordered commutative idempotent residuated lattices to prove that the variety generated by this class has …

On Quantum Effects Of Vector Potentials And Generalizations Of Functional Analysis, Ismael L. Paiva
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This is a dissertation in two parts. In the first one, the Aharonov-Bohm effect is investigated. It is shown that solenoids (or flux lines) can be seen as barriers for quantum charges. In particular, a charge can be trapped in a sector of a long cavity by two flux lines. Also, grids of flux lines can approximate the force associated with continuous two-dimensional distributions of magnetic fields. More, if it is assumed that the lines can be as close to each other as desirable, it is explained how the classical magnetic force can emerge from the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Continuing, the …

Stochastic Wiener Filter In The White Noise Space, Daniel Alpay, Ariel Pinhas
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper we introduce a new approach to the study of filtering theory by allowing the system's parameters to have a random character. We use Hida's white noise space theory to give an alternative characterization and a proper generalization to the Wiener filter over a suitable space of stochastic distributions introduced by Kondratiev. The main idea throughout this paper is to use the nuclearity of this space in order to view the random variables as bounded multiplication operators (with respect to the Wick product) between Hilbert spaces of stochastic distributions. This allows us to use operator theory tools and …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
FL2-algebras are lattice-ordered algebras with two sets of residuated operators. The classes RA of relation algebras and GBI of generalized bunched implication algebras are subvarieties of FL2-algebras. We prove that the congruences of FL2-algebras are determined by the congruence class of the respective identity elements, and we characterize the subsets that correspond to this congruence class. For involutive GBI-algebras the characterization simplifies to a form similar to relation algebras.

A commutative doubly-idempotent semiring (cdi-semiring) (S,V,·,0,1) is a semilattice (S,V,0) with x V 0 = x and a semilattices (S,·,1) with identity 1 such that x0 = 0, and x(y V z) = xy V xz holds for all x, y, z ϵ S. Bounded distributive lattices are cdi-semirings that satisfy xy = x ^ y, and the variety of cdi-semirings covers the variety of bounded distributive lattices. Chajda and Länger showed in 2017 that the variety of all cdi-semirings is generated by a 3-element cdi-semiring. We show that there are seven cdi-semirings with a V-semilattice of height …
