Effects In The Anomalistic Period Of Celestial Bodies Due To A Logarithmic Correction To The Newtonian Gravitational Potential, Omiros Ragos, Ioannis Haranas, Ioannis Gkigkitzis

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We study the motion of a secondary celestial body under the influence of the logarithmic corrected gravitational force of a primary one. This kind of correction was introduced by Fabris et al. (2009). We derive two equations to compute the rate of change of the periastron w.r.t. the eccentric anomaly and its total variation over one revolution, In a kinematical sense, this influence produces an apsidal motion. We perform numerical estimations for Mercury and for the companion star of the pulsar PSR 1913+16. We also consider the case of the artificial Earth satellite GRACE-A, but the results present a low …

Minimizing Travel Time Through Multiple Media With Various Borders, Tonja Miick May 2013

Minimizing Travel Time Through Multiple Media With Various Borders, Tonja Miick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis consists of two main chapters along with an introduction and
conclusion. In the introduction, we address the inspiration for the thesis, which
originates in a common calculus problem wherein travel time is minimized across two media separated by a single, straight boundary line. We then discuss the correlation of this problem with physics via Snells Law. The first core chapter takes this idea and develops it to include the concept of two media with a circular border. To make the problem easier to discuss, we talk about it in terms of running and swimming speeds. We first address …

Particle Dynamics And Resistivity Characteristics In Bifurcated Current Sheets, Tushar Andriyas May 2013

Particle Dynamics And Resistivity Characteristics In Bifurcated Current Sheets, Tushar Andriyas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Charged particle chaos and its collective effects in different magnetic geometries are investigated in a sequence of various numerical experiments. The fields generated by the particles as a result of interaction with the background electric and magnetic fields is not accounted for in the simulation. An X-line is first used to describe the geometry of the magnetotail prior to magnetic reconnection and a study of the behavior of charged particles is done from a microscopic viewpoint. Another important geometry in the magnetotail prior to substorm onset is Bifurcated Current Sheet. The same analysis is done for this configuration. The existence …

Towards A Better Understanding Of Space-Time Causality: Kolmogorov Complexity And Causality As A Matter Of Degree, Vladik Kreinovich, Andres Ortiz Apr 2013

Towards A Better Understanding Of Space-Time Causality: Kolmogorov Complexity And Causality As A Matter Of Degree, Vladik Kreinovich, Andres Ortiz

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Space-time causality is one of the fundamental notions of modern physics; however, it is difficult to define in observational physical terms. Intuitively, the fact that a space-time event e=(t,x) can causally influence an event e'=(t',x') means that what we do in the vicinity of e changes what we observe at e'. If we had two copies of the Universe, we could perform some action at e in one copy but not in another copy; if we then observe the difference at e', this would be an indication of causality. However, we only observe one Universe, in which we either perform …

The Use Of Statistics In Experimental Physics, Thomas J. Pfaff, Maksim Sipos, M. C. Sullivan, B. G. Thompson, Max Tran

Publications and Research

Most mathematicians are aware of the importance of statistics in biological sciences, business, and economics, but are less aware that statistics is used every day in experimental physics. This paper gives three interesting examples of how statistics plays a vital role in physics. These examples use the basic statistical tools of residuals analysis and goodness of fit.

Information-Based Physics: An Intelligent Embedded Agent's Guide To The Universe, Kevin H. Knuth Mar 2013

Information-Based Physics: An Intelligent Embedded Agent's Guide To The Universe, Kevin H. Knuth

Physics Faculty Scholarship

In this talk, I propose an approach to understanding the foundations of physics by considering the optimal inferences an intelligent agent can make about the universe in which he or she is embedded. Information acts to constrain an agent’s beliefs. However, at a fundamental level, any information is obtained from interactions where something influences something else. Given this, the laws of physics must be constrained by both the nature of such influences and the rules by which we can make inferences based on information about these influences. I will review the recent progress we have made in this direction. This …

Variation Of Instructor-Student Interactions In An Introductory Interactive Physics Course, Emily West, Cassandra Paul, David Webb, Wendell Potter Mar 2013

Variation Of Instructor-Student Interactions In An Introductory Interactive Physics Course, Emily West, Cassandra Paul, David Webb, Wendell Potter

Faculty Publications

The physics instruction at UC Davis for life science majors takes place in a long-standing reformed large-enrollment physics course in which the discussion or laboratory instructors (primarily graduate student teaching assistants) implement the interactive-engagement (IE) elements of the course. Because so many different instructors participate in disseminating the IE course elements, we find it essential to the instructors’ professional development to observe and document the student-instructor interactions within the classroom. Out of this effort, we have developed a computerized real-time instructor observation tool (RIOT) to take data of student-instructor interactions. We use the RIOT to observe 29 different instructors for …

From Solute Transport To Chemical Weathering, Allen Hunt, Thomas E. Skinner Jan 2013

From Solute Transport To Chemical Weathering, Allen Hunt, Thomas E. Skinner

Physics Seminars

A theory for conservative solute transport, based on concepts from percolation theory, is applied directly to reactive solute transport. Chemical reactions are assumed to have reached equilibrium at the scale of an individual pore, but at larger length scales, equilibration is limited by solute transport velocities, which are not the same as fluid velocities! The results of this theory already predicted observed dispersivity values for conservative solute transport over ten orders of magnitude of length scale as well as the variation of solute arrival time distributions with medium saturation. We now show that the solute velocity predicts the time-dependence of …
