In his 1999 paper D. W. Masser talks about effective search bounds for polynomial equations over integers and rationals. This discussion can also be extended over number fields. Unfortunately, as illustrated by Matiasevich's negative answer to Hilbert's 10-th problem, search bounds in general probably do not exist. Some special cases are understood, but in general very little is known. I will talk about effective search bounds for solutions of polynomial equations over Q-bar with some additional arithmetic conditions. This discussion also naturaly ties into the realm of "absolute" diophantine results, like Siegel's lemma of Roy and Thunder. I will try …

In this paper we present a convergence theorem for continued fractions of the form K∞n=1an/1. By deriving conditions on the an which ensure that the odd and even parts of K∞n=1an/1 converge, these same conditions also ensure that they converge to the same limit. Examples will be given.

Let K/F be an extension of finite fields of characteristic two. We consider quadratic forms written as the trace of xR(x), where R(x) is a linearized polynomial. We show all quadratic forms can be so written, in an essentially unique way. We classify those R, with coefficients 0 or 1, where the form has a codimension 2 radical. This is applied to maximal Artin-Schreier curves and factorizations of linearized polynomials.

In this paper we show how to apply various techniques and theorems (including Pincherle’s theorem, an extension of Euler’s formula equating infinite series and continued fractions, an extension of the corresponding transformation that equates infinite products and continued fractions, extensions and contractions of continued fractions and the Bauer-Muir transformation) to derive infinite families of in-equivalent polynomial continued fractions in which each continued fraction has the same limit. This allows us, for example, to construct infinite families of polynomial continued fractions for famous constants like π and e, ζ(k) (for each positive integer k ≥ 2), various special functions evaluated at …

In this article we obtain a general polynomial identity in k variables, where k ≥ 2 is an arbitrary positive integer. We use this identity to give a closed-form expression for the entries of the powers of a k × k matrix. Finally, we use these results to derive various combinatorial identities.

Fuzzy theory is one of the best tools to analyze data, when the data under study is an unsupervised one, involving uncertainty coupled with imprecision. However, fuzzy theory cannot cater to analyzing the data involved with indeterminacy. The only tool that can involve itself with indeterminacy is the neutrosophic model. We compute all nonic extensions of Q3 and find that there are 795 of them up to isomorphism. We describe how to compute the associated Galois group of such a field, and also the slopes measuring wild ramification. We present summarizing tables and a sample application to number fields.

We describe a general three step method for constructing number fields with Lie-type Galois groups and discriminants factoring into powers of specified primes. The first step involves extremal solutions of the matrix equation ABC = I. The second step involves extremal polynomial solutions of the equation A(x) + B(x) + C(x) = 0. The third step involves integer solutions of the generalized Fermat equation axp + byq + czr = 0. We concentrate here on details associated to the third step and give examples where the field discriminants have the form ±2a3b .

Using the discrepancy metric, we analyze the rate of convergence of a random walk on the circle generated by d rotations, and establish sharp rates that show that badly approximable d-tuples in Rd give rise to walks with the fastest convergence.

A formula for the number of common zeros of a non-degenerate pencil of quadratic forms is given. This is applied to pencils which count binary strings with an even number of 1's prescribed distances apart.

In 1888, James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) published a series of papers that he hoped would pave the way for a general proof of the nonexistence of an odd perfect number (OPN). Seemingly unaware that more than fifty years earlier Benjamin Peirce had proved that an odd perfect number must have at least four distinct prime divisors, Sylvester began his fundamental assault on the problem by establishing the same result. Later that same year, he strengthened his conclusion to five. These findings would help to mark the beginning of the modern era of research on odd perfect numbers. Sylvester's bound stood …

For an odd positive integer n, we determine formulas for the number of irreducible polynomials of degree n over GF(2) in which the coefficients of xn-1, xn-2 and xn-3 are specified in advance. Formulas for the number of elements in GF(2n) with the first three traces specified are also given.

A simple tiling on a sphere can be used to construct a tiling on a d-fold branched cover of the sphere. By lifting a so-called equatorial tiling on the sphere, the lifted tiling is locally kaleidoscopic, yielding an attractive tiling on the surface. This construction is via a correspondence between loops around vertices on the sphere and paths across tiles on the cover. The branched cover and lifted tiling give rise to an associated monodromy group in the symmetric group on d symbols. We explore some questions related to one of Brizolis: does every prime p have a pair (g, h) such that h is a fixed point for the discrete logarithm with base g? We extend this question to ask about not only fixed points but also two-cycles. Campbell and Pomerance have not only answered the fixed point question for sufficiently large p but have also rigorously estimated the number of such pairs given certain conditions on g and h. Continued fractions whose elements are polynomial sequences have been carefully studied mostly in the cases where the degree of the numerator polynomial is less than or equal to two and the degree of the denominator polynomial is less than or equal to one. Here we study cases of higher degree for both numerator and denominator polynomials, with particular attention given to cases in which the degrees are equal. We extend work of Ramanujan on continued fractions with rational limits and also consider cases where the limits are irrational.

We consider reduced Witt rings of finite chain length. We show there is a bound, in terms of the chain length and maximal signature, on the dimension of anisotropic, totally indefinite forms. From this we get the ascending chain condition on principal ideals and hence factorization of forms into products of irreducible forms.

In his work with the partition function, Ramanujan observed several congruences of the form p(An + B) = 0 (mod m). We adapt this form to several congruences of the distinct partition function, p2(n). We show that one can determine all ordered pairs of integers (A;B) for which p2(An + B)=0 (mod 2) and show families of congruences modulo 4. Finally, we offer a proof of a congruence modulo 5 satisfied by the distinct partition function.
