Comparison Of Non-Prosthetic And Prosthetic Strides In A Pendulum-Based Model, Catherine T. Cronister
Comparison Of Non-Prosthetic And Prosthetic Strides In A Pendulum-Based Model, Catherine T. Cronister
Student Scholarship
In this paper, we explore the differences in a non-prosthetic and prosthetic single stride. We accomplish this by developing a model based on a forced, triple pendulum. We use this model to describe a single stride and alter where the internal force comes from to simulate a prosthetic and non-prosthetic stride. We numerically solve our model with Matlab. We find that our model qualitatively represents the energy gap between a prosthetic and non-prosthetic stride. Our model also agreed qualitatively with alterations of the prosthetic designed to decrease the energy gap between the two strides.

The Thayer method of instruction is a little-known active learning technique that dates back to 1817 at the U.S. Military Academy. This study describes the implementation and statistical evaluation of an adaptation of the Thayer method in a variety of college science and math courses. All courses had five characteristics in common: (i) students were given a daily reading schedule and instructed to prepare before class, (ii) each class started with a question and answer session, (iii) class time minimized the use of lecture, (iv) class time maximized the use of active learning, and (v) students were frequently quizzed. In this study, we developed a novel produce-specific mechanistic model to predict free chlorine (FC) dynamics during washing of disk-cut carrots, cut cabbage, and cut iceberg lettuce, in 3 L and 50–100 L tanks, and of shredded iceberg lettuce in 3200 L pilot-plant trials. Ranges for two key parameters: β (L mg−1 min−1) the apparent reaction rate constant of FC with produce constituents, and γ, the fraction of the increase of chemical oxygen demand (COD) contributing to the reaction, were determined at the 3 L scale. For disk carrots β∈[0.05,0.09] and γ∈[0.054,0.078], for cut cabbage β∈[0.05,0.10] and γ∈[0.09,0.12], and for …

The rapid introduction of fresh-cut produce into a produce wash system can dramatically decrease the free chlorine (FC) concentration level in the wash water, resulting in potential widespread cross-contamination throughout the entire wash system. To minimize such contamination, a sufficient level of FC must be maintained in the wash water. This paper presents a state estimation-based robust adaptive sliding mode (RASM) control strategy for the wash system to stabilize the FC concentration level during fresh-cut iceberg lettuce washing. This feedback control law for FC dosing is suggested to provide a sufficient FC injection rate (FCIR) to the wash system in …
Support For The Habitat Amount Hypothesis From A Global Synthesis Of Species Density Studies, James I. Watling, Rebecca Fang
Support For The Habitat Amount Hypothesis From A Global Synthesis Of Species Density Studies, James I. Watling, Rebecca Fang
2020 Faculty Bibliography
Decades of research suggest that species richness depends on spatial characteristics of habitat patches, especially their size and isolation. In contrast, the habitat amount hypothesis predicts that (1) species richness in plots of fixed size (species density) is more strongly and positively related to the amount of habitat around the plot than to patch size or isolation; (2) habitat amount better predicts species density than patch size and isolation combined, (3) there is no effect of habitat fragmentation per se on species density and (4) patch size and isolation effects do not become stronger with declining habitat amount. Data on …

Use Of Kalman Filtering In State And Parameter Estimation Of Diabetes Models, Cassidy Le
HMC Senior Theses
Diabetes continues to affect many lives every year, putting those affected by it at higher risk of serious health issues. Despite many efforts, there currently is no cure for diabetes. Nevertheless, researchers continue to study diabetes in hopes of understanding the disease and how it affects people, creating mathematical models to simulate the onset and progression of diabetes. Recent research by David J. Albers, Matthew E. Levine, Andrew Stuart, Lena Mamykina, Bruce Gluckman, and George Hripcsak1 has suggested that these models can be furthered through the use of Data Assimilation, a regression method that synchronizes a model with a …

American Society for Microbiology. Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EcO157) infections have been recurrently associated with produce. The physiological state of EcO157 cells surviving the many stresses encountered on plants is poorly understood. EcO157 populations on plants in the field generally follow a biphasic decay in which small subpopulations survive over longer periods of time. We hypothesized that these subpopulations include persister cells, known as cells in a transient dormant state that arise through phenotypic variation in a clonal population. Using three experimental regimes (with growing, stationary at carrying capacity, and decaying populations), we measured the persister cell fractions in culturable EcO157 …

Seeds from four citrus rootstocks including sour orange, Bitters-C22 citrandarin, Sarawak pummelo 3 Rio Red grapefruit, and Sarawak pummelo 3Bower mandarin were exposed to high inoculum levels of Phytophthora nicotianae to screen for tolerance. Inoculation of pregerminated seeds (PGIS) and non-PGIS was carried out. The average P. nicotianae propagule counts from the soil samples where these seedlings were raised ranged from 424 to 1361 colony forming units/cm3. The proportion of live to dead plants was recorded at 11months postinoculation, which showed that Sarawak3Bower performed significantly better than other rootstocks. Evaluation of the rootstocks 18 months postinoculation resulted in only one …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
In this paper, we describe our process for developing applied problems from biology and chemistry for use in a differential calculus course. We describe our conversations and curricular analyses that led us to change from our initial focus on college algebra to calculus. We provide results that allowed us to see the overlaps between biology and mathematics and chemistry and mathematics and led to a specific focus on problems related to rates of change. Finally, we investigate the problems that were developed by the partner disciplines for use on recitation activities in calculus and how those problems were modified by …
Numerical Modeling Of Submicron Particles For Acoustic Concentration In Gaseous Flow, Jizhou Liu, Xiaodong Li, Fang Q. Hu
Numerical Modeling Of Submicron Particles For Acoustic Concentration In Gaseous Flow, Jizhou Liu, Xiaodong Li, Fang Q. Hu
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
This paper intends to explore the rationality and feasibility of modeling dispersed submicron particles in air by a kinetic-based method called the unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS) and apply it to the simulation of particle concentration under a transverse standing wave. A gas-particle coupling scheme is proposed where the gas phase is modeled by the two-dimensional linearized Euler equations (LEE) and, through the analogous behavior between the rarefied gas molecules and the air-suspended particles, a modified UGKS is adopted to estimate the particle dynamics. The Stokes' drag force and the acoustic radiation force applied on particles are accounted for by introducing …

One quarter of veterans returning from the 1990–1991 Persian Gulf War have developed Gulf War Illness (GWI) with chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Exertion leads to characteristic, delayed onset exacerbations that are not relieved by sleep. We have modeled exertional exhaustion by comparing magnetic resonance images from before and after submaximal exercise. One third of the 27 GWI participants had brain stem atrophy and developed postural tachycardia after exercise (START: Stress Test Activated Reversible Tachycardia). The remainder activated basal ganglia and anterior insulae during a cognitive task (STOPP: Stress Test Originated Phantom Perception). Here, the role of attention …

Modelling And Analysis Of A Holling Type Ii Stage Structured Predator-Prey System In The Presence Of Harvesting, Jacob Lyimo, Nyimvua Shaban, Eunice Mureithi, Thadei Sagamiko
Tanzania Journal of Science
The effect of harvesting and predation on a Holling type II stage-structured predator-prey system with assumption that harvesting and predation happen only to mature preys was investigated. Stability of interior point was analysed using Routh Hurwith Criterion. Numerical simulations were carried out. The results show that harvesting and predation have strong negative impacts on population dynamics of stage structured predator-prey system.
Individual Based Model To Simulate The Evolution Of Insecticide Resistance, William B. Jamieson
Individual Based Model To Simulate The Evolution Of Insecticide Resistance, William B. Jamieson
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Insecticides play a critical role in agricultural productivity. However, insecticides impose selective pressures on insect populations, so the Darwinian principles of natural selection predict that resistance to the insecticide is likely to form in the insect populations. Insecticide resistance, in turn, severely reduces the utility of the insecticides being used. Thus there is a strong economic incentive to reduce the rate of resistance evolution. Moreover, resistance evolution represents an example of evolution under novel selective pressures, so its study contributes to the fundamental understanding of evolutionary theory.
Insecticide resistance often represents a complex interplay of multiple fitness trade-offs for individual …

On The Weighted Pseudo Almost Periodic Solutions Of Nicholson’S Blowflies Equation, Ramazan Yazgan, Cemil Tunç
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This study is concerned with the existence, uniqueness and global exponential stability of weighted pseudo almost periodic solutions of a generalized Nicholson’s blowflies equation with mixed delays. Using some differential inequalities and a fixed point theorem, sufficient conditions were obtained for the existence, uniqueness of at the least a weighted pseudo almost periodic solutions and global exponential stability of this solution. The results of this study are new and complementary to the previous ones can be found in the literature. At the end of the study an example is given to show the accuracy of our results.

Controlling the free chlorine (FC) availability in wash water during sanitization of fresh produce enhances our ability to reduce microbial levels and prevent cross-contamination. However, maintaining an ideal concentration of FC that could prevent the risk of contamination within the wash system is still a technical challenge in the industry, indicating the need to better understand wash water chemistry dynamics. Using bench-scale experiments and modeling approaches, we developed a comprehensive mathematical model to predict the FC concentration during fresh-cut produce wash processes for different lettuce types (romaine, iceberg, green leaf, and red leaf), carrots, and green cabbage as well as …

Tick Control Methods For Amblyomma Americanum In Virginia: Applications And Modeling, Alexis Lynn White
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Tick-borne diseases continue to increase in the United States, and yet no comprehensive method of tick control currently exists. The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is an aggressive human-biting tick and vector of several pathogens which effect both humans and other animals. Standard control methods do not work as well for A. americanum as they do for the more commonly studied blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. TickBot, a tick-killing robot, is a potential method to control A. americanum that lures ticks to its path with carbon dioxide and the ticks die from contact with a permethrin-treated cloth that is …

The Trojan Y Chromosome Strategy (TYC) is a promising eradication method for biological control of non-native species. The strategy works by manipulating the sex ratio of a population through the introduction of supermales that guarantee male offspring. In the current manuscript, we compare the TYC method with a pure harvesting strategy. We also analyze a hybrid harvesting model that mirrors the TYC strategy. The dynamic analysis leads to results on stability of solutions and bifurcations of the model. Several conclusions about the different strategies are established via optimal control methods. In particular, the results affirm that either a pure harvesting …

Effective Statistical Energy Function Based Protein Un/Structure Prediction, Avdesh Mishra
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are an important component of living organisms, composed of one or more polypeptide chains, each containing hundreds or even thousands of amino acids of 20 standard types. The structure of a protein from the sequence determines crucial functions of proteins such as initiating metabolic reactions, DNA replication, cell signaling, and transporting molecules. In the past, proteins were considered to always have a well-defined stable shape (structured proteins), however, it has recently been shown that there exist intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), which lack a fixed or ordered 3D structure, have dynamic characteristics and therefore, exist in multiple states. Based on …
