What Is The Uncertainty Of The Result Of Data Processing: Fuzzy Analogue Of The Central Limit Theorem, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is known that, due to the Central Limit Theorem, the probability distribution of the uncertainty of the result of data processing is, in general, close to Gaussian -- or to a distribution from a somewhat more general class known as infinitely divisible. We show that a similar result holds in the fuzzy case: namely, the membership function describing the uncertainty of the result of data processing is, in general, close to Gaussian -- or to a membership function from an explicitly described more general class.

So How To Make Group Decisions? Arrow's Impossibility Theorem 70 Years After, Hung T. Nguyen, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In 1951, Kenneth Arrow proved that it is not possible to have a group decision making procedure that satisfies reasonable requirements like fairness. From the theoretical viewpoint, this is a great result -- well-deserving the Nobel Prize that was awarded to Professor Arrow. However, from the practical viewpoint, the question remains -- so how should we make group decisions? A usual way to solve this problem is to provide some reasonable heuristic ideas, but the problem is that different seemingly reasonable idea often lead to different group decision -- this is known, e.g., for different voting schemes. In this paper, …

Knot Theory In Virtual Reality, Donald Lee Price Jul 2021

Knot Theory In Virtual Reality, Donald Lee Price

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Throughout the study of Knot Theory, there have been several programmatic solutions to common problems or questions. These solutions have included software to draw knots, software to identify knots, or online databases to look up pre-computed data about knots. We introduce a novel prototype of software used to study knots and links by using Virtual Reality. This software can allow researchers to draw links in 3D, run physics simulations on them, and identify them. This technique has not yet been rigorously explored and we believe it will be of great interest to Knot Theory researchers. The computer code is written …

What Fuzzy And Quantum Computing Can Learn From The Success Of Deep Learning, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2021

What Fuzzy And Quantum Computing Can Learn From The Success Of Deep Learning, Shahnaz Shahbazova, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

How can we apply the ideas that made deep neural networks successful to other aspects of computing? For this purpose, we reformulate these ideas in a more general form -- and we show that this generalization also covers fuzzy and quantum computing. This enables us to suggest that similar ideas can be helpful for fuzzy and quantum computing as well. In this suggestion, we are encouraged by the fact that as we show, to some extent, these ideas are already helpful.

Why Quantum Techniques Are A Good First Approximation To Economic Phenomena, And What Next, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Somewhat surprisingly, several formulas of quantum physics -- the physics of micro-world -- provide a good first approximation to many social phenomena, in particular, to many economic phenomena, phenomena which are very far from micro-physics. In this paper, we provide three possible explanations for this surprising fact. First, we show that several formulas from quantum physics actually provide a good first-approximation description for many phenomena in general, not only to the phenomena of micro-physics. Second, we show that some quantum formulas represent the fastest way to compute nonlinear dependencies and thus, naturally appear when we look for easily computable models; …

Awegnn: Auto-Parametrized Weighted Element-Specific Graph Neural Networks For Molecules., Timothy Szocinski, Duc Duy Nguyen, Guo-Wei Wei

Mathematics Faculty Publications

While automated feature extraction has had tremendous success in many deep learning algorithms for image analysis and natural language processing, it does not work well for data involving complex internal structures, such as molecules. Data representations via advanced mathematics, including algebraic topology, differential geometry, and graph theory, have demonstrated superiority in a variety of biomolecular applications, however, their performance is often dependent on manual parametrization. This work introduces the auto-parametrized weighted element-specific graph neural network, dubbed AweGNN, to overcome the obstacle of this tedious parametrization process while also being a suitable technique for automated feature extraction on these internally complex …

Ivy Plot: Enhancing A Dot Plot By Representing Observations As Leaflets, Tri Ha Minh Nguyen '23, Mamunur Rashid, Jyotirmoy Sarkar Jul 2021

Ivy Plot: Enhancing A Dot Plot By Representing Observations As Leaflets, Tri Ha Minh Nguyen '23, Mamunur Rashid, Jyotirmoy Sarkar

Student Research

For a large data set, a dot plot poses a challenge—albeit unintended—in counting the dots. To overcome this shortcoming Sarkar and Rashid (2021) proposed an IVY plot, which represents tied data in batches of five by depicting an IVY leaf with five leaflets. These leaves are bottom-justified and stacked vertically, with the topmost leaf possibly having fewer than five leaflets, until the number of leaflets equals the frequency at each value

Numerical Approaches Of Pricing European Options In The Cox-Ross-Rubenstein Models, Hai Phan, Seonguk Kim Phd Jul 2021

Numerical Approaches Of Pricing European Options In The Cox-Ross-Rubenstein Models, Hai Phan, Seonguk Kim Phd

Annual Student Research Poster Session

The Cox-Ross-Rubinstein (CRR) market mode is used to price European and American Options without complex elements, including dividends, stocks, and stock indexes paying a continuous dividend yield, futures, and currency options. The model is an elegant, simple, but strong model to explain the general economic intuition behind option pricing and its principal techniques. In the paper, the CRR model's numerical elements and equations are indicated, and a practical event is examined to demonstrate the application of the model in the financial market. To make it easier to understand, figures, including tables and graphs, are also included to visualize and simplify …

Effect Of Excess Tellurium And Lead On Defor-Mation - Characteristics Of Polycrystalline Pbte Films, Yu.Yu. Vaitkus, Otajonov Salimjon Jun 2021

Effect Of Excess Tellurium And Lead On Defor-Mation - Characteristics Of Polycrystalline Pbte Films, Yu.Yu. Vaitkus, Otajonov Salimjon

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

In this work, we studied the ef-fect of excess tellurium and lead on the defor-mation characteristics of polycrystalline PbTe films obtained on different substrates. It was found that the resistance of the films first increases and reach-es a maximum, and with a further increase in the level of deformation, it decreases and the sign of the tensile resistance begins to change, which are associated with the presence of internal stresses in the films. It was also shown that with an increase in the amount of lead in the composition of the PbTe film, the electrical conductivity increases in com-parison with …

Simulation Of Self-Heating Effect In Mosfet Based On 2d Mos2, Atabek E. Atamuratov, Xushnudbek Sh. Saparov, A Yusupov, Frank Schwierz

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

One of the main trends of today's electronics is the decreasing the sizes of MOSFET up to nanometer scale. In this connection there are two main views to the perspective of scaling. According to one of them limit of scaling is reached at sizes 10 nm order, however according to second view, still there are opportunity to decrease transistor to more lower sizes. In accordance with second approach it is suggested to continue the size scaling by modification the transistor structure or by using the new materials, particularly one or two dimensional materials. One of such suggestions is the designing …

Method Of Characteristics For Solving The Problem Of Gas Outflow From An Elementary Sec-Tion Of A Gas Pipeline, Madaminjon K. Mahkamov, S.S. Akhmadjonov, I.K. Khujaev

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

Numerous problems based on equations of hyperbolic type are solved by the method of characteristics when boundary conditions of the first, second and third kinds are set on the boundary. These include, in particular, the problems of pipeline transportation of various media. The quasi-one-dimensional equations of conservation of mass and momentum are linearized and separate equations are drawn up for a specific indicator (flow rate, gas pressure) of the process. This approach is associated with the tradition of forming boundary conditions and solving problems only with respect to a specific indicator, in particu-lar, with respect to pressure, velocity, and flow …

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

The results showed a slight increase in internal resistance under the influence of bending and confirmed that the equivalent circuit model of electrons did not change under bending conditions as indicated in graphically illustrated the results by cyclic voltamperometry (TsV) at a scanning speed of 10 mV / s under the above bending angles of the SK prepared on the basis of PG 10 GPE. From ex-periments we found that the shapes are almost rec-tangular, with no redox peaks observed. We can see that the area of the TsV curves changes slightly as the bending angle increases, but this does …

Influence Of A Strong Magnetic Field On Fermi Energy Oscillations In Two-Dimensional Semiconductor Materials, Gafur Gulyamov, Ulugbek Inayatillyevich Erkaboev, Rustam Gulomzhonovich Rakhimov, Nozimjon Sayidov Sayidov, Jasurbek Mirzaev

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

This article discusses the effect of a quantizing magnetic field and temperature on Fermi energy oscillations in nanoscale semiconductor materials. A generalized mathematical expression is obtained for calculating the dependence of the Fermi energy oscillations on the magnetic field, temperature, and thickness of the quantum well. It is shown that the Fermi energy in nanoscale semiconductor materials under a quantizing magnetic field is quantized. The proposed theory explains the experimental results in two-dimensional semiconductor structures with a parabolic dispersion law.

Determination Of The Specific Thermo Emf Of Granulated Silicon Doped With Alkaline Metals., B.M. Abdurakhmanov, Zarnigor Sohibova, M.M. Adilov

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

The value of the specific thermo EMF is one of the most important thermoelectric parameters of a material and in practice is estimat-ed mainly by two well-known methods - integral and differential. To measure the thermo EMF of granular silicon, we used a differential method. In this work, the thermoelectric properties of granular silicon containing alkali metal atoms have been studied, the presence of which, for example, in single-crystal structures makes it possible to improve the characteristics of a number of devices, and in polycrystalline ones, the effect of grain boundaries on the electrical properties, in particular, to reduce the …

The State Of Solar Energy In Uzbekistan In The Framework Of The Devel-Opment Of Renewable Energy Sources, E.Z. Imamov, Ramizulla Abdullaevich Muminov, Temur Asfandiyarovich Djalalov, I.Sh. Abdullaeva

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

The paper analyzes the possibilities of renewable energy sources to become the main sources of ener-gy that can in the future replace traditional technologies for the production of thermal and electrical energy based on the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

Technological approaches are considered that make it possible to significantly increase the efficiency of solar energy, and it is also shown that such a possibility can be realized by using weakly crystalline and cheap modifications of silicon, which have previously passed the corresponding nanotechnological effect.

Properties And Applications Of Metal-Oxide Thin Films In Converters Of En-Ergy (Review), Shakhriyor Kh. Yulchiev, Akramjon Boboev, Xushruybek Mahmudov

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

Metal-oxide semiconductors (SnO2, ZnO, TiO2, etc.) have a wide band gap (~3 eV) and are trans-parent in the visible range of the optical spectrum. Therefore, transparent semiconductor devices (diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, etc.) can be made based on them. There are two peaks in the emission spectrum of the LED. One of the peaks (3.3 eV), apparently, is as-sociated with exciton recombination, and the other peak is associated with recombination through a deep impuri-ty level. The emission spectrum of the LED was ob-served at a direct current of 40 mA. The electrolumines-cence spectrum obtained on the heterostructure at room temperature …

A Cauchy-Goursat Problem For A Second Kind Degenerated Equation Of Hyperbolic Type, Doniyor Usmonov

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

In the work a Cauchy-Goursta problem has been formulated and investigated for a second kind degenerated equation of hyperbolic type. During the investigation, it was used properties of Gauss’s hyper geometric function and symbol of Pochhammer, the considered problem equivalently reduced to an integral equation with respect to trace of unknown function. Properties of Riemann-Liuvill integral-differential and generalized integral-differential operators have found solution of the taken integral equation. To find solution of the problem it was used general solution of the equation. A class of generalized solutions was introduced for the correctness of the problem. It was found necessary conditions …

Evolution Of Quantum Systems Consisting Of Mul-Tiple Various Particles Interacting With General-Ized Yukasha Potential, N.N. Bogolyubov, Rasulova Mukhayo, U.O. Avazov

Scientific Bulletin. Physical and Mathematical Research

In this paper, multi-variety densely packed par-ticle dynamic systems with the ability to interact with the shielded Yukawa potential were studied. Also, in order to study more widely the dynamics of systems containing particles interacting via shielded potential, the theoretical foundations of the dynam-ics of systems consisting of an arbitrary number of bounded - sorted multi-particles are analyzed. The dynamics of an arbitrary number of interacting par-ticle systems on a screening potential was studied using the Bogolyubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) chain of quantum kinetic equations. The BBGKY chain of quantum kinetic equations has solutions for the case that characterizes the evo-lution of …

Functional Role Of The N-Terminal Domain In Connexin 46/50 By In Silico Mutagenesis And Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Umair Khan Jun 2021

Functional Role Of The N-Terminal Domain In Connexin 46/50 By In Silico Mutagenesis And Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Umair Khan

University Honors Theses

Connexins form intercellular channels known as gap junctions that facilitate diverse physiological roles, from long-range electrical and chemical coupling to nutrient exchange. Recent structural studies on Cx46 and Cx50 have defined a novel and stable open state and implicated the amino-terminal (NT) domain as a major contributor to functional differences between connexin isoforms. This thesis presents two studies which use molecular dynamics simulations with these new structures to provide mechanistic insight into the function and behavior of the NTH in Cx46 and Cx50. In the first, residues in the NTH that differ between Cx46 and Cx50 are swapped between the …

Algebraic Graph-Assisted Bidirectional Transformers For Molecular Property Prediction, Dong Chen, Kaifu Gao, Duc Duy Nguyen, Xin Chen, Yi Jiang, Guo-Wei Wei, Feng Pan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The ability of molecular property prediction is of great significance to drug discovery, human health, and environmental protection. Despite considerable efforts, quantitative prediction of various molecular properties remains a challenge. Although some machine learning models, such as bidirectional encoder from transformer, can incorporate massive unlabeled molecular data into molecular representations via a self-supervised learning strategy, it neglects three-dimensional (3D) stereochemical information. Algebraic graph, specifically, element-specific multiscale weighted colored algebraic graph, embeds complementary 3D molecular information into graph invariants. We propose an algebraic graph-assisted bidirectional transformer (AGBT) framework by fusing representations generated by algebraic graph and bidirectional transformer, as well as …

Why Cauchy Membership Functions: Efficiency, Javier Viana, Stephan Ralescu, Kelly Cohen, Anca Ralescu, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy techniques depend heavily on eliciting meaningful membership functions for the fuzzy sets used. Often such functions are obtained from data. Just as often they are obtained from experts knowledgable of the domain and the problem being addressed. However, there are cases when neither is possible, for example because of insufficient data, or unavailable experts. What functions should one choose and what should guide such choice? This paper argues in favor of using Cauchy membership functions, thus named because their expression is similar to that of the Cauchy distributions. The paper provides a theoretical explanation for this choice.

Many Known Quantum Algorithms Are Optimal: Symmetry-Based Proofs, Vladik Kreinovich, Oscar Galindo, Olga Kosheleva Jun 2021

Many Known Quantum Algorithms Are Optimal: Symmetry-Based Proofs, Vladik Kreinovich, Oscar Galindo, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many quantum algorithms have been proposed which are drastically more efficient that the best of the non-quantum algorithms for solving the same problems. A natural question is: are these quantum algorithms already optimal -- in some reasonable sense -- or they can be further improved? In this paper, we review recent results showing that many known quantum algorithms are actually optimal. Several of these results are based on appropriate invariances (symmetries).

Why Rectified Linear Neurons: Two Convexity-Related Explanations, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

At present, the most efficient machine learning technique is deep learning, in which non-linearity is attained by using rectified linear functions s(x)=max(0,x). Empirically, these functions work better than any other nonlinear functions that have been tried. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this empirical fact. This explanation is based on the fact that one of the main applications of neural networks is decision making, when we want to find an optimal solution. We show that the need to adequately deal with situations when the corresponding optimization problem is feasible -- i.e., for which the objective function …

Why Dilated Convolutional Neural Networks: A Proof Of Their Optimality, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2021

Why Dilated Convolutional Neural Networks: A Proof Of Their Optimality, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most effective image processing techniques is the use of convolutional neural networks that use convolutional layers. In each such layer, the value of the output at each point is a combination of input data corresponding to several neighboring points. To improve the accuracy, researchers have developed a version of this technique, in which only data from some of the neighboring points is processed. It turns out that the most efficient case -- called dilated convolution -- is when we select the neighboring points whose differences in both coordinates are divisible by some constant l. In this paper, …

How General Is Fuzzy Decision Making?, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, users describe their preferences in imprecise (fuzzy) terms. In such situations, fuzzy techniques are a natural way to describe these preferences in precise terms.

Of course, this description is only an approximation to the ideal decision making that a person would perform if we took time to elicit his/her exact preferences. How accurate is this approximation? When can fuzzy decision making -- potentially -- describe the exact decision making, and when there is a limit to the accuracy of fuzzy approximations?

In this paper, we show that decision making can be precisely described in fuzzy terms …

Green Computing: Three Examples Of How Non-Trivial Mathematical Analysis Can Help, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2021

Green Computing: Three Examples Of How Non-Trivial Mathematical Analysis Can Help, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Environment-related problems are extremely important for mankind, the fate of humanity itself depends on our ability to solve these problems. These problems are complex, we cannot solve them without using powerful computers. Thus, in the environmental research, environment-related computing is one of the main computing-related research directions. Another direction is related to the fact that computing itself can be (and currently is) harmful for the environment. How to make computing more environment-friendly, how to move towards green computing -- this is the second important direction. A third direction is motivated by the very complexity of environmental systems: it is difficult …

Is It Fair That Advanced Workers Get Paid Disproportionally More: Economic Analysis, Olga Kosheleva, Sean R. Aguilar Jun 2021

Is It Fair That Advanced Workers Get Paid Disproportionally More: Economic Analysis, Olga Kosheleva, Sean R. Aguilar

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

On the one hand, everyone agrees that economics should be fair, that workers should get equal pay for equal work. Any instance of unfairness causes a strong disagreement. On the other hand, in many companies, advanced workers -- who produce more than others -- get paid dispropotionally more for their work, and this does not seem to cause any negative feelings. In this paper, we analyze this situation from the economic viewpoint. We show that from this viewpoint, additional payments for advanced workers indeed make economic sense, benefit everyone, and thus -- in contrast to the naive literal interpretation of …
