A Study Of The Interface Between A Turbulent Boundary Layer And The Irrotational Free Stream, Shih-Chao Lin

A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the events which occur at the interface between a turbulent boundary layer and the irrotational free stream. By assuming the streamwise velocity component of this interface to be constant and that the interface is uncontorted initially, the solution to the equations of motion is used to derive the position functions of a point element on the interface. This analysis is restricted to a fully developed incompressible turbulent boundary layer with zero pressure gradient. Vertical velocity disturbances which are periodic in the spanwise direction and restricted to small streamwise domains are assumed.

This study was initiated to investigate factors which contribute to environmental activism. Towards this end, three hypotheses were investigated. First, it was hypothesized that beach clean-up participants would harbor pro-environmental attitudes. Second, it was hypothesized that participants would be relatively young, politically liberal, well-educated, and wealthy. Finally, it was hypothesized that particular types of social structure would influence a person's decision to participate in a beach clean-up. Specifically, it was hypothesized that participants at each clean-up location would be clique members and/or would be structurally equivalent. In this paper we obtain a generalized Lamé-Clapeyron solution for a one-phase Stefan problem with a particular type of sources. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given in order to characterize the source term which provides a unique solution. Some estimates on the free boundary and the temperature are presented. In particular, asymptotic expansions are given for small Stefan number and source.

Fredman and Knuth have treated certain recurrences, such as $M(0) = 1$ and\[M(n + 1) = \mathop {\min }\limits_{0 \leqslant k \leqslant n} (\alpha M(k) + \beta M(n - k)),\] where $\min (\alpha ,\beta ) > 1$, by means of auxiliary recurrences such as \[h(x) = \left\{ {\begin{array}{*{20}c} {0\qquad {\text{if}}0 \leqslant x < 1,} \\ {1 + h({x / \alpha }) + h({x / \beta }){\text{ if}}1 \leq x < \infty .} \\ \end{array} } \right.\] The asymptotic behavior of $h(x)$ as $x \to \infty $ with $\alpha $ and $\beta $ fixed depends on whether ${{\log \alpha } / {\log \alpha }}$ is rational or irrational.

The solution of Fredman and Knuth used analytic methods in both cases, and used in particular the Wiener–Ikehara Tauberian theorem in the irrational case. This thesis examines the impacts of tourism on the residents of Block Island. More specifically the study seeks to identify the specific areas of concern, as perceived by the residents, in three major areas of impact: economic, social and environmental. It was hypothesized that the residents of Block Island, a mature tourist destination area, had formulated perceptions of the impacts of tourism and that these perceptions, if analyzed, would identify protection of the environment and threats to the Island's lifestyle as major concerns. Activator-Inhibitor Control Of Tissue Growth, John A. Adam

This note develops a simple model for the competition between activator and inhibitor control mechanisms in one-dimensional tissue growth. The pedagogic usefulness of such a model is that it is easily accessible to undergraduate applied mathematicians and is suggestive of behavior known to occur in more realistic biological systems (e.g., some types of cancer). The limitations of the model are obvious and can provide a basis for discussion of the applicability of complementary levels of description in mathematical modeling.

The impact of the Capital Construction Fund, a tax deferral program utilized for the construction of fishing vessels, is examined in the context of Rhode Island's fishing industry. It was believed that the Capital Construction Fund contributed to overcapitalization, was an incentive to purchase a vessel, and was mainly used by individuals targeting underutilized species. Indicators of capitalization such as number, size, and ages of vessels owned were gathered from the owners of vessels home-ported in Rhode Island during personal interviews. One such effort is the Boston Harbor "Sewer Tour" Program run by 'Save the Harbor/Save the Bay' in Boston, Massachusetts. The Sewer Tour Program addresses matters of water pollution control in the Metropolitan Boston area. Dredging management within the states of Rhode Island, Maine and Connecticut is examined through an analysis of the ports of Providence, Portland, and New Haven. These ports were selected from a field of 30 Atlantic Coast ports through a multivariate statistical analysis, based on similarities in size, function and geography. Each port's dredging history was compiled to illustrate the frequency and magnitude of dredging activity among the three states. Pertinent state laws, regulations and policies regarding dredging and dredged material disposal were reviewed in an attempt to identify similarities and differences. Single-mode projection filters for modal parameter identification for flexible structures are introduced. An effective two-dimensional global optimization method using interval analysis is combined with the projection filters to facilitate identification for modal frequency and damping. A numerical simulation of a ten-mode structure is presented to illustrate the feasibility of the new method. The projection filters are practical for parallel processing implementation.

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the limited entry alternative of fishery management by examining the history of a particular limited entry scheme: the Massachusetts inshore commercial lobster fishery license limitation law. A review was made of existing limited entry theory, followed by a description of limited entry programs extant in U.S. fisheries. The legislative and political histories of the Massachusetts lobster fishery limited entry program was then examined. On July 8, 1980, the Galveston district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) issued the permits required for the construction of an onshore deepwater port. The proposed port expansion project has been the subject of extensive controversy and litigation. The primary conflict has centered on the exclusion of a worst case oil spill analysis, as required by recent Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations. The purpose of this thesis is to study certain reproducing kernel Krein spaces of analytic functions, the relationships between these spaces and an inverse scattering problem associated with matrix valued functions of bounded type, and an operator model.

Roughly speaking, these results correspond to a generalization of earlier investigations on the applications of de Branges' theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions to the inverse scattering problem for a matrix valued function of the Schur class.

A multiobjective branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed for use in analysing multiobjective fixed-charge network-flow problems which are found commonly in water resources planning situations. Also proposed is a multiobjective imputed value analysis which makes use of the branch-and-bound tree structure and allows the comparison of the importance of facilities in the network as represented by individual arcs or sets of arcs.
