International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Mediterranean catchments usually exhibit strong gradients of both weather variables at different time scales and soil uses, which add complexity to their hydrological modelling, especially in mountainous areas. WiMMed (Water integrated Management model for Mediterranean regions) model was designed to include such variability of scales in an operational suite capable of connecting GIS-based representations of the catchment (soil characteristics and uses, vegetation cover and snow dynamics) with advanced algorithms for simulating the energy and water balance on a physical basis. Widely used throughout the South of Spain, WiMMed efficiently represents the spatial patterns of precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and evapotranspiration …

Rediscovering Manning’S Equation Using Genetic Programming, Carlos F. Gaitan
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Open-channel hydraulics’ (OCH) research traditionally links empirical formulas to observational data. One of the most common equations in OCH is Manning’s formula for open channel flow (Q) driven by gravity (also known as the Gauckler-Manning-Strickler formula). The formula relates the cross-sectional average velocity (V=Q/A), the hydraulic radius (R), and the slope of the water surface (S) with a friction coefficient n, characteristic of the channel’s surface. Here we show a practical example where Genetic Programming (GP), a technique derived from Bioinformatics, can be used to derive an empirical relationship based on different synthetic datasets of the aforementioned parameters. Specifically, we …

An Artificial Neural Network-Based Rainfall Runoff Model For Improved Drainage Network Modelling, David Walker, Edward C. Keedwell, Dragan A. Savić, Richard Kellagher
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Modelling rainfall-runoff processes enables hydrologists to plan their response to flooding events. Urban drainage catchment modelling requires rainfall-runoff models as a prerequisite. In the UK, one of the main software tools used for drainage modelling is InfoWorks CS, based on relatively simple methods which are relatively robust in predicting runoff. This paper presents an alternative approach to modelling runoff that will allow for the complex inter-relation of runoff that occurs from impermeable areas, permeable areas, local surface storage and variation in rainfall induced infiltration. Apart from the uncertainties associated with the measurement of connected surfaces to the drainage system, the …

Warm water is an important factor in the water and energy nexus. The energy used to produce warm tap water is often 10 times higher than the operational energy to produce and distribute drinking water and to collect and treat wastewater together. Once used in a shower, bath or laundry machine, the hot water is disposed into the sewer system. For modern homes in The Netherlands this is 30-50 % of the total heat loss. Heat recovery from sewer systems may therefore be an interesting option to reduce water use related energy. In this study a model was developed to …

CO2 storage in geological formations is a promising technology under debate for reducing carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere. Numerical simulation can help assessing the feasibility of this technology if real geological systems can be analyzed numerically. To this purpose, extremely high computational power is necessary to approach reality. In this work, a parallel computing technique is presented for the numerical simulation of two-phase flow processes in porous media for large scale applications of CO2 storage. The Galerkin finite element method is used to solve the initial boundary value problem arising from the underlying mathematical model. The PETSc package is …

Advances in environmental monitoring systems from remote sensing to pervasive real and virtual sensor networks are enlarging the amount and types of data available at local and global scale at increasingly higher temporal and spatial resolution. However, accessing and integrating these data for modeling and operational purposes can be challenging and highly time consuming, particularly in complex physical and institutional contexts, where data are from different sources. This research focuses on the design of a web geo- service architecture, based on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), to enable collection and sharing of data coming from complex water resources domains …

Hydrometeorological data is exiguous in developing countries due to the exorbitant price of actual weather monitoring systems acquisition and communication infrastructure built mostly in developed countries. Another impediment to large scale data collection in developed countries is the lack or limited local resources to ensure the maintenance of stations equipments. However, recent advanced progresses made in information and communication technologies have paved the way to access to a large set of free software and low-cost and low-power hardware to sense and monitor the environment. Many researchers and practitioners have grasped the opportunities offered by those technological advances, but, have applied …

Development Of A Stormwater Low Impact Development Planning Tool For The Province Of Ontario, Canada, James Li, Zhi Zheng
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Stormwater low impact development practices (LID) are lot-level measures which reduce runoff from lots and roads. Although there are many LID planning tools available (ranging from watershed, city, and site levels), it is not easy to find one that is appropriate for development of a LID site plan in Ontario. In particular, the Province of Ontario’s LID performance requirements are based on long-term average annual runoff and pollutant loading reduction. After a review of 16 LID planning tools in North America, it was found that 70% of these tools are site or city level and outputs from these tools include …

The world is experiencing a countless number of impressive and devastating floods causing a range of health impacts and risks with hundreds of thousands of people losing their lives or becoming homeless in a matter of hours. EU Floods Directive requires the developing of flood hazard maps, which may include information on hydrological and hydrodynamics characteristics of vulnerable regions, i.e. inundated areas and river flow discharges. Prediction of flood events can accurately be achieved by applying mathematical modelling for describing rainfall-runoff phenomena as well as surface waters hydrodynamics. Moreover, reservoirs can be properly operated in order to minimize flood events …

Temporal and spatial variability of rainfalls have a significant impact on the operation of urban drainage systems. Stormwater retention reservoirs are particularly sensitive to these variations. This paper presents the results of research on the impact of the direction and speed of rainfall movement over an urban catchment (of total area 560ha) on required volume of the retention reservoir. Calibrated hydrodynamic model has been used to simulate rainstorms movement (software: SWMM5). The whole catchment was divided into sectors of 600´600m, which facilitated the calculation of time shift between sectors for assumed speeds of rainfall movement (vop= 2, 5 and 10 …

Most rivers in Taiwan are suffered from serious sedimentation problems due to extreme weather in recent years. In order to decrease sediment trap in Shihmen Reservoir, the reservoir sediment was effluent into downstream river during flood period. The river sediment deposition and erosion would be thus more violent. The quasi-two dimensional model, NETSTARS, was applied to investigate hydraulic characteristics and corresponding river sedimentation behavior in Da-Han basin. The model was calibrated and verified with field survey data and then was utilized to predict the spatial and temporal variations of downstream suspended solid concentration. Through investigating the change of suspended solid …

An underwater gas pipeline is the portion of the pipeline that crosses a river beneath its bottom. Underwater gas pipelines are subject to increasing dangers as time goes by. An accident at an underwater gas pipeline can lead to technological and environmental disaster on the scale of an entire region. Therefore, timely troubleshooting of all underwater gas pipelines in order to prevent any potential accidents will remain a pressing task for the industry. The most important aspect of resolving this challenge is the quality of the automated system in question. Now the industry doesn't have any automated system that fully …

Monitoring Snow Cover Area In Semiarid Regions Using Terrestrial Photography, Rafael Pimentel, María José Pérez-Palazón, Javier Herrero, María José Polo
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The heterogeneous distribution of snow in mountain regions often constitutes a great problem for an adequate modeling of snow dynamics. Remote sensing is usually used for the detection of snow distribution, but the fixed spatiotemporal resolution of these sources greatly reduces their efficiency, especially when the significant scale of the process under study is smaller than the sensor resolution. This is the case of the snow in semiarid areas, where rapid snow melting on sunny and warm days may substantially change the snow cover within just a few days, or where small snow patches (O~1 m) usually persist during many …

Iran, has caused most of the water used and as much as possible to avoid losses. One of the important parameters in agriculture is water distribution uniformity coefficient (CU) in sprinkler irrigation. CU amount of water sprinkler operating depends on different pressure heads (P), riser height (RH), distance between sprinklers on lateral pipes (Sl) and the distance between lateral pipes (Sm). The best combination of the above parameters for maximum CU, is still unknown for applicators. In this research, CU quantities of zb model sprinkler (made in Iran) were measured at Hashemabad cotton research station of Gorgan under 3 different …

Drops are hydraulic structures that are commonly used in irrigation and waste water collection networks. A vertical drop balances the elevation difference between the channel slope and ground slope. Earlier investigations on this structure have mainly focused on experimental studies of the hydraulic characteristics. In this paper, the hydraulic characteristics of vertical drops with inverse apron have been studied numerically with used of Fluent software to solve the finite volume method. The volume of fluid (volume of fluid) was used for modeling the free surface. Flow characteristics such as downstream depth, pool depth and energy loss were calculated and compared …

Flooding in urban areas due to heavy rainfall coupled with high tides is a major concern affecting development of coastal cities all over the world. There is a spectrum of models such as 2D distributed flood models to simplified storage cell models using analytical expressions. All such models demand a high level of skill to handle geospatial data making it difficult for decision makers. Thus development of web GIS based hydrological application becomes essential. Traditionally, most web GIS based applications have used conceptual model because of low data requirements and parameter calibrations. In this paper web GIS based integrated flood …

The present paper presents a flood risk assessment approach for urban areas with mixed land-use including cultural sites. Destruction of heritage properties through disasters creates a serious loss for the national and local communities, not only because of the cultural importance of heritage assets but also for their socio-economic value. At the same time, studies have shown that protecting heritage promotes resilience since heritage contributes to social cohesion, sustainable development and psychological well-being (Jigyasu et. al [3]). Although disaster risk management activities have been developed intensively, a very few methodologies are developed specifically for preservation of heritage sites. Economic as …

Wrap Your Model!, Hauke Sonnenberg, Michael Rustler, Victor Philippon, Nicolas Caradot, Andreas Matzinger
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Introduction Environmental models are often provided in the form of software solutions, with different levels of complexity. The simplest form is an executable file reading the model setup and boundary conditions from input files, doing the calculations and generating output files with model results. Preparing input files and reading output files requires to know and respect model specifics such as file formats and calling conventions. This "user-unfriendliness" may discourage the usage of models in this simplest form. However, these models may offer great opportunities since they are often freely available and contain the pure model "core" being fast in execution. …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Recent advances in Cellular Automata (CA) represent a new, computationally efficient method of simulating flooding in urban areas. A number of recent publications in this field have shown that CAs can be much more computationally efficient than methods than using standard shallow water equations (Saint Venant/Navier-Stokes equations). CAs operate using local state-transition rules that determine the progression of the flow from one cell in the grid to another cell, in many publications the Manning’s Formula is used as a simplified local state transition rule. Through the distributed interactions of the CA, computationally simplified urban flooding can be processed, although these …

One of the main challenges in hydro-meteorological research (HMR) is predicting the impact of weather and climate changes on the environment, society and economy, including local severe hazards such as floods and landslides. At the heart of this challenge lies the ability to have easy access to hydro-meteorological data and models, and facilitate the collaboration across discipline boundaries. Within the DRIHM project (Distributed Research Infrastructure for Hydro-Meteorology, www.drihm.eu, EC funded FP7 project 2011-2015) we develop a prototype e-Science environment to facilitate this collaboration and provide end-to-end HMR services (models, datasets, and post-processing tools) at the European level, with the ability …

Predicted climatic, demographic and socio-economic developments cause major adaptions of urban water infrastructures. The central water supply and wastewater systems in Europe do not meet the increased requirements of resource efficiency and sustainability anymore. Especially in rural areas predicted demographic change and the particular differentiated settlement structure affect the functionality of present water infrastructures. These new challenges require extensive and flexible adaptions or even a long-term and dynamic system change of urban infrastructures. These long-term transformations of infrastructure systems require the design of innovative strategies. In the project presented, environmental engineers together with city planners, mathematicians and computer scientists develop …
