GCM outputs such as CMIP3 are available via network access to PCMDI web site. Meteorological researchers are familiar with the usage of the GCM data, but the most of researchers other than meteorology such as agriculture, civil engineering, etc., and general people are not familiar with the GCM. There are some difficulties to use GCM; 1) to download the enormous quantity of data, 2) to understand the GCM methodology, parameters and grids. In order to provide a quick access way to GCM, Climate Change Information Database has been developed. The purpose of the database is to bridge the users and …
Study On Optimization Of The Integrated Operation Of Dams Using Ensemble Prediction, Satoru Oishi, Hiroko Masuda
Study On Optimization Of The Integrated Operation Of Dams Using Ensemble Prediction, Satoru Oishi, Hiroko Masuda
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Flood control is one of the most important issues of reservoir operation. Rivers in island countries like Japan, Philippines and Indonesia that have smaller reservoirs than continental countries needs short term reservoir operation for flood control. In Japan, typhoons give dominant amount of water to reservoirs. Pre-release of water which makes effective use of the capacity of a reservoir requires the rainfall amount forecast (hyetograph). Therefore, weather forecast of typhoons is indispensable for flood control. Masuda and Oishi (2013) developed the reservoir control operation model using stochastic dynamic programming with one week ensemble weather forecast. One week ensemble forecast consists …

An Application Of Services Based Modelling Paradigm To The Hydrologic Domain Using Ewater Source, Matthew Paul Stenson, Dave Penton, Ben Leighton, Nicholas J. Car, Qifeng Bai, Ramneek Singh, Jean-Michel Perraud, Robert Bridgart
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The traditional paradigm for the deployment of hydrological models involves the capturing and testing of model concepts and numerical consistency for robustness and accuracy, which is then distributed as binary files with or without source code. The model software is then populated with data and parameters and run locally within the modeller’s organisation, often on their own desktop. This modelling workflow is used by many organisations; however, there are several limitations and potential issues. Once the software is outside the developer’s organisation they rely on the modeller to apply updates and bug fixes in a timely manner, and to correctly …
Comparison Of Various Phased Approaches For The Constrained Minimum-Cost Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Enrico Creaco, Marco Franchini, Tom Walski
Comparison Of Various Phased Approaches For The Constrained Minimum-Cost Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Enrico Creaco, Marco Franchini, Tom Walski
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This work is aimed at analyzing and comparing three different phased approaches for constrained minimum-cost design of water distribution networks: the single-step design with demand feedback, the multi-step design without demand feedback and the multi-step design with demand feedback. The difference between the single-step design and the multi-step design lies in the fact that whereas the former entails optimizing a single construction step at a time, i.e. the current construction phase, the latter is based on the phasing of construction and then is aimed at optimizing the current construction phase and all the subsequent phases, included inside a certain temporal …

An integrated hydrological ensemble prediction system (IHEPS) is providing a probabilistic assessment of future stream flow predicitons replacing the traditional forecasting method of a single deterministic flow forecast. The ensemble forecasting system includes multi model approaches where the hydrological forecasts model is driven by weather prediction model outputs to generate an ensemble stream flow forecast predictions. The performance of the IHEP systems intent to increase the credibility of the stream flow forecast predictions at the point of interest. However, quality of the stream flow forecast predictions are influenced by uncertainties originated from various sources in the forecasting chain. This paper …

Decision support for sewer rehabilitation programs is dependent on reliable information about the asset conditions. Inference about the condition development can be made by combining condition observations with deterioration forecasting models. GompitZ is a Non-Homogenous Markov Chain model, which enables waste water utilities to predict the sewer deterioration at a network segment level, based on closed-circuit TV (CCTV) inspection and normalized condition grading. The predictions can be used to assess investment needs for the sewer systems. Successful calibration and prediction is however dependent on the validity of the model assumptions, sufficient amounts of CCTV observations, and that the condition grading …
Flow Analysis And Leak Detection With The Cfpd Method In The Paris Drinking Water Distribution System, Peter Van Thienen, Frank Montiel
Flow Analysis And Leak Detection With The Cfpd Method In The Paris Drinking Water Distribution System, Peter Van Thienen, Frank Montiel
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
With significant drinking water loss rates >10% during distribution at many drinking water utilities worldwide, the detection of new leaks, especially small and slowly growing leaks, remains an important challenge for the water sector. Time series of flow rates into isolated or completely metered distribution areas (e.g. District Metered Areas) contain signals of all existing and new leaks in that area, and also of all other processes taking place, e.g. changes in demand, operations, etc. Therefore, in principle these data can provide valuable information about new leaks, unregistered changes in valve status, etc. However, distinguishing one from the others is …
Alternative Strategies For Optimal Water Quality Sensor Placement In Drinking Water Distribution Networks, Peter Van Thienen
Alternative Strategies For Optimal Water Quality Sensor Placement In Drinking Water Distribution Networks, Peter Van Thienen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The most commonly applied strategies for optimal water quality sensor placement in drinking water distribution systems are aimed at contamination early warning systems. These strategies aim to minimize the number of people affected in case of a deliberate contamination of drinking water in the distribution system, and provide a valuable tool. A number of factors which are usually not taken into account, including the response strategy to the identification of a contamination event, the fallibility of sensors and changes in network configuration (valve manipulation) and operation, may affect the results of these strategies. Since the quickness and effectiveness of a …

Evaluation Of Decision Making Methods For Integrated Water Resource Management Under Uncertainty, Thomas Peter Roach, Zoran Kapelan, Michelle Ledbetter, Ben Gouldby, Steven Wade, Ralph Ledbetter
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Water companies and utilities in the UK are required to produce Water Resource Management Plans (WRMPs) every five years that outline their future strategies for maintaining a secure water supply to meet anticipated demand levels. Regulatory frameworks differ around the world but in most countries similar plans are developed under the auspices of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) programmes. The plans justify new demand management and water supply infrastructure needed and validate management decisions. One of the greatest problems now facing decision makers in the water industry are the increasing uncertainties in the variables used in estimating the supply and …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Smart water metering technologies for residential buildings offer, in principle, great opportunities for sustainable urban water management. However, much of this potential is as yet unrealized. Despite that several ICT solutions have already been deployed aiming at optimum operations on the water utilities side (e.g. real time control for water networks, dynamic pump scheduling etc.), little work has been done to date on the consumer side. This paper presents a web-based platform targeting primarily the household end user. The platform enables consumers to monitor, on a real-time basis, the water demand of their household, providing feedback not only on the …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Sustainable water supply for an urban water system (UWS) is a challenge especially when the system is subject to both climate change and increasing water demand. This paper presents a simulation-optimization approach for determining an optimal strategy for long term operation of UWSs. The simulation module is the conceptual WaterMet2 model which can quantify and evaluate the values of some pre-defined performance indicators through simulating the UWS operation. The optimization module is the genetic algorithm (GA) minimizing water abstraction from groundwater wells and total costs while maximizing the system reliability. The decision variables are the amounts of water allocated to …

Effective Data Management Enables Intelligent Utility Management, Gary L.S. Wong
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Instrumentation and automation plays a vital role to managing the water industry. These systems generate vast amounts of data that must be effectively managed in order to enable intelligent decision making. Time series data management software, commonly known as data historians are used for collecting and managing real-time (time series) information. More advanced software solutions provide a data infrastructure or utility wide Operations Data Management System (ODMS) that stores, manages, calculates, displays, shares, and integrates data from multiple disparate automation and business systems that are used daily in water utilities. These ODMS solutions are proven and have the ability to …

Induction Of Governing Differential Equations From Hydrologic Time Series Data Using Genetic Programming, Jayashree Chadalawada, Vladan Babovic
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Induction of Governing Differential Equations from Hydrologic Time Series Data using Genetic Programming Jayashree Chadalawada and Vladan Babovic This contribution describes an evolutionary method for identifying causal model from the observed time-series data. In the present case, we use a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) as the causal model. Usefulness of the approach is demonstrated on real-world time series of hydrologic processes and the unknown function of governing factors are determined. To explore the evolutionary search space more effectively, the right hand sides of ODEs are inferred by genetic programming (GP). The importance of different fitness criteria, as well …
Decision-Making Frameworks For Using Sensor Data And Evolutionary Algorithms To Flush A Contaminated Water Distribution System, M. Ehsan Shafiee, Emily Zechman Berglund
Decision-Making Frameworks For Using Sensor Data And Evolutionary Algorithms To Flush A Contaminated Water Distribution System, M. Ehsan Shafiee, Emily Zechman Berglund
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In the event that a contaminant enters a water distribution system, opening hydrants to flush contaminated water can protect consumers from becoming exposed. Strategies for operating hydrants can be developed to specify the selection of hydrants and the timing of operations to maximize the amount of contaminant that is removed from the system. As an event unfolds, however, sensor data may be the only information that is available to indicate the location and timing of the contaminant source, and ultimately, hydrant strategies must be selected in a highly uncertain environment. The decision-making framework for making real-time decisions to select hydrant …
Numerical Simulation Of 3d Flow In Right-Angled Confluences With Bed Elevation Discordance In The Main River, Dejana Đorđević
Numerical Simulation Of 3d Flow In Right-Angled Confluences With Bed Elevation Discordance In The Main River, Dejana Đorđević
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Two major morphological phenomena in alluvial river confluences are the development of an avalanche face or faces at the entrance of one or both converging channels to the confluence, due to deposition of coarser sediments, and deepening of the scour hole in the post-confluence channel. The development of an avalanche face creates the difference in bed elevations between incoming and outgoing channels. Laboratory experiments in movable bed models of confluences showed, and bathimetric surveys in field confluences confirmed, that avalanche faces develop in both converging channels only in alluvial river confluences with large junction angles (α ≥ 45o). The effect …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Forest fires, soil erosion, and land use changes in Lake Mead watershed nearby Las Vegas wash are considered as sources of water quality impairment in the Lake Mead. These conditions result in higher concentration of Total Organic Carbon (TOC). TOC in contact with Chlorine which is often used for disinfection purposes of drinking water supply causes the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs). THM is one of the toxic carcinogens controlled by EPA’s Disinfection By-Product Rule. As a result of threat posed to drinking water of 25 million people downstream, recreation area, and wildlife habitat of Lake Mead, it is necessary to …

Development Of An Information Mapping Framework To Couple Surface Flow And Subsurface Hydraulic Models, Kashif Shaad, Paolo Burlando
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Here we present the outline of an information mapping framework that allows coupling of existing surface and subsurface hydraulic modelling domains and can provide an alternate to specialized fully integrated coupled modelling codes. The flexibility of the framework intends to allow selecting solvers with assumptions and representations in-line with the requirements of the area being modelled as well as reusing the expertise that has gone into building the decoupled models as part of the respective surface flow or groundwater study. We focus on 2d representation of surface hydraulics and 3d representation of subsurface flow to form the basis of the …

In arid regions, groundwater is the most reliable source for freshwater. Thus, ensuring an aquifer’s long-term stability is one of the fundamental tasks for nowadays groundwater management. Especially in agriculturally used coastal regions, where water consumption exceeds annual recharge, water table drawdown and subsequent saline intrusion are problems that need to be addressed. Wihin the context of the government-funded research project „International Water ResearchAlliance Saxony“, groundwater quality for near-coastal, agriculturally used areas was investigated under the influence of marine saltwater intrusion. In the study region’s near-coastal areas, agricultural development increased tremendously during recent decades, while a steady lowering of the …
On The Influence Of Error Model In The Good Performance Of The Hydrological Model For The Right Reasons., Félix Francés, Mario R. Hernández
On The Influence Of Error Model In The Good Performance Of The Hydrological Model For The Right Reasons., Félix Francés, Mario R. Hernández
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Hydrological models provide extrapolations or predictions, which are not lacking of uncertainty, which reduces the confidence in their results. One phase of the hydrological implementation process, which significantly contributes to that uncertainty, is the calibration phase in which values of the unknown model parameters are tuned by optimizing an objective function. Traditionally, the most commonly used fitting criterion, has been the simple least squares (SLS), regardless of the SLS criterion involves assumptions about the probability distribution of the errors. Failure of these assumptions introduces noise into the estimation of the parameters, which leads to the phenomenon called model divergence, where the …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) are critical infrastructures that are exposed to deliberate or accidental chemical, biological or radioactive contamination which need to be detected in due time. However, until now, no monitoring system is capable of protecting a WDN in real time. Powerful online sensor systems are currently developed and the prototypes are able to detect a small change in water quality. In the immediate future, water service utilities will install their networks with water quantity and water quality sensors. For taking appropriate decisions and countermeasures, WDN operators will need to dispose of: 1) a fast and reliable detection of …

A Wireless Mesh Sensor Network Framework For River Flood Detection And Emergency Communications In Case Of Disaster, Mynor Vinicio Anthone Andrade, Satoru Oishi
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This study proposes an alternative network relatively simple and inexpensive that can be used for maintaining communications capabilities during major natural disasters and other emergency situations by introducing a system that utilizes Short Message Service(SMS) over Wireless Mesh Sensor Networks(WMSNs). To create this WMSN we propose a system using the water level sensors widely used in rivers throughout the world. Nowadays, most of the communication systems and their applications require a network infrastructure like cellular network or the Internet for communications between users. This communication links can become unavailable during a major disaster due to damaged infrastructure and power outages. …
Portable Gpu-Based Artificial Neural Networks For Data-Driven Modeling, Zheng Yi Wu
Portable Gpu-Based Artificial Neural Networks For Data-Driven Modeling, Zheng Yi Wu
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Artificial neural network (ANN) is widely applied as data-driven modeling tool in hydroinformatics due to its broad applicability of handing implicit and nonlinear relationships between the input and output data. To obtain a reliable ANN model, training ANN using the data is essential, but the training is usually taking many hours for large data set and/or for large systems with many variants. This may not be a concern when ANN is trained for offline applications, but it is of great importance when ANN is trained or retrained for real-time and near real-time applications, which are becoming an increasingly interested research …

The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin contains approximately twenty percent of the world’s surface freshwater. The five Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) provide drinking water for 24 million people and support industry, agriculture, and a world-class fishery and ecosystem. The region includes parts of two nations, eight U.S. States and two Canadian Provinces, many Tribes and First Nations, thousands of municipalities and local governments, and a range of stakeholders. These various governments and partners work across borders to manage and protect the region’s water resources and share data and information through a legal and political framework that …
Predicting The Impact Of Climate Change On Pipe Failure In Drinking Water Distribution Systems., Bas Wols, Peter Van Thienen
Predicting The Impact Of Climate Change On Pipe Failure In Drinking Water Distribution Systems., Bas Wols, Peter Van Thienen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Underground water infrastructure is designed to withstand a variability of forces during its lifetime before failure occurs. As a result of variations in loads on and deterioration of the pipe, early failures may occur. Climate change may accelerate or decelerate these processes. A statistical analysis is therefore performed to study correlations between weather parameters and pipe failure rates in the drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) of the Netherlands. The strongest correlations were found between pipe failure rates and temperature. Failure rates in asbestos cement (AC) and small diameter steel pipes increase during warm periods, which often also show higher water …

A New Methodology For The Design Of Residential Water Distribution Networks And Its Population Range Of Application., Daniel Vallejo, Juan Guillermo Saldarriaga, Diego Alejandro Páez, Santiago Serrano
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
For the design of a Water Distribution Systems (WDS) or for Residential Water Networks (RWN) different assumptions have to be made. This implies that the design methodologies for each of the two kinds of networks differ between them and so it is important to define a population value that limits the applicability of each method. This paper will present a new methodology for the RWN’s design process as well as the calculation the population limit. For designing the RWN demands’ predictions have to be made. The new methodology uses the concept of Poisson Rectangular Pulses (PRP) for modeling the water …

2-D And 3-D Numerical Modeling Of Dam Break Waves Over Moveable Beds, Kamal El Kadi Abderrezzak, Riadh Ata, Pablo Tassi, Dongchen Wang, Jean-Michel Hervouet, Andres Die Moran
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Dam-break waves over movable beds are multi-physical processes that involve rapidly varying flows, intense sediment transport and significant alteration in bed morphology. In turn, this change in morphology may strongly affect the maximum water levels and arrival time of the wave front, which are the main characteristics to consider for use in risk assessment. In this paper, we report numerical simulations of dam-break waves induced sediment transport using the open source Telemac-Mascaret modeling system (www.opentelemac.org). The 3D hydrodynamic model, TELEMAC-3D, and the 2D depth-averaged hydrodynamic model, TELEMAC-2D, are used. Both models are internally coupled with the sediment transport module SISYPHE. …

Model Predictive Control Combined With Genetic Algorithms For A River System, Po-Kuan Chiang, Patrick Willems
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Flood is one of the natural disasters. It frequently causes costly economic losses and numbers of lives come to harm. Due to these severe injuries, how to perform an effective flood control is always a huge challenge for governments and water authorities. In order to establish successful flood control strategies to prevent or alleviate flood damages, besides implementing operating rules (regulations) established by water authorities for the hydraulic structures, applying real time optimization-based control strategies is a supplementary tool for water managers to make decisions. It is expected that the importance of such real time control strategies will become more …

Untreated tannery discharges to rivers are still a common practice in developing countries causing severe pollution. In this paper the development and application of a dynamic water quality model to simulate the impact caused by tannery effluents with high contents of sulphides, chlorides and chromium is presented. The proposed model subroutines, designed and implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK in this work, were coupled to an existing efficient aggregated dynamic river transport and water quality model of conventional determinands. A Chromium (Cr) transport and fate modeling subroutine was implemented to determine the speciation of Cr3 and Cr6 and the dissolved and particulate fractions …

Modeling The Effects Sea Level Rise On Flooding In The Lower Niger River, Zahrah Naankwat Musa, Ioana Popescu, Arthur E. Mynett
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The Niger River bifurcates into the Nun and Forcados rivers as it flows through the Niger delta, with the Forcados River taking 46% of the discharge and the Nun River taking 54%. Within the last fifteen years the Niger delta coastal zone has experienced peak floods between September and October due to intense rains from upstream. Many studies including the United Nations Framework on Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) indicate that the Niger delta region could be inundated with water due to the effects of climate change. According to local experts, the Niger delta is subsiding at over 25mm/annum; a …

Prediction Of Scour Depth Around Bridge Piers Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (Anfis), Manousos Valyrakis, Hanqing Zhang
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Earth's surface is continuously shaped due to the action of geophysical flows. Erosion due to the flow of water in river systems has been identified as a key problem in preserving ecological health but also a threat to our built environment and critical infrastructure, worldwide. As an example, it has been estimated that a major reason for bridge failure is due to scour. Even though the flow past bridge piers has been investigated both experimentally and numerically, and the mechanisms of scouring are relatively understood, there still lacks a tool that can offer fast and reliable predictions. Most of the …
