Research And Application On The Coupled Method Of Remote-Sensing And Ground-Monitoring Of Reservoir Storage Capacity, He Zhu, Hongli Zhao, Yunzhong Jiang, Li Wang
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Reservoir storage capacity monitoring is the basis of reservoir operation. The relationship curves of reservoir water level-area and water level-capacity are the significant parameters of storage capacity calculation. With the long-term operation, both on the bottom and bank of the reservoir have erosion and deposition, causing the relationship of water level-area and level-storage changes, which leads to inaccuracy of reservoir storage capacity calculation with the original curves. It is costly to revise the curves of reservoir water level-area and water level-capacity by ground measurement termly. A coupled Method of Remote-sensing and Ground-monitoring of Reservoir Storage Capacity is proposed in this …

Development And Testing Of Data Driven Nowcasting Models Of Beach Water Quality, Jainy Mavani, Lianghao Chen, Darko Joksimovic, Songnian Li
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Beach water issues are gaining worldwide attention due to their impact on health and other environmental problems. The Ontario beaches require beach managers to issue swimming advisories when water quality standards are exceeded since users of recreational waters may be exposed to elevated pathogen levels through various point and non-point sources. Typical daily notifications rely on microbial analysis of indicator organisms (e.g. Escherichia coli), which require 18-24 hours to provide an adequate response. This research evaluated the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR) for real time prediction of E.coli in the beach waters of Toronto …

Optimal Tank Design And Operation Strategy To Enhance Water Quality In Distribution Systems, Alemtsehay G. Seyoum, Tiku T. Tanyimboh, Calvin Siew
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Water storage tanks are key components of water distribution networks (WDNs) and are primarily designed and operated to meet demand variations and pressure needs. However, the common practice in the design of WDNs is to incorporate large storage tanks that may possibly create long residence time. Long residence time is a major contributing factor for loss of disinfectant, increased formation of disinfection by products and microbial regrowth. Also, poor choice in tank geometry, location and operation can play a role in deterioration of water quality. Most of the previous approaches on optimisation of WDNs design and operation do not take …

Optimization Of Groundwater Remediation With New Efficient Parallel Algorithm For Global Optimization, Min Pang, Christine A. Shoemaker
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Application of optimization algorithm to PDE modeling groundwater remediation can greatly reduce remediation cost. However, groundwater remediation analysis requires a computational expensive simulation, therefore, effective parallel optimization could potentially greatly reduce computational expense. The optimization algorithm used in this research is Parallel Stochastic radial basis function. This is designed for global optimization of computationally expensive functions with multiple local optima and it does not require derivatives. In each iteration of the algorithm, an RBF is updated based on all the evaluated points in order to approximate expensive function. Then the new RBF surface is used to generate the next set …

The Iowa Flood Information System (IFIS) is a web-based platform developed by the Iowa Flood Center (IFC) to provide access to flood inundation maps, real-time flood conditions, flood warnings and forecasts, flood-related data, information and interactive visualizations for communities in Iowa. The key elements of the IFIS are: (1) flood inundation maps, (2) autonomous “bridge sensors” that monitor water level in streams and rivers in real time, and (3) real-time flood forecasting models capable of providing flood warning to over 1000 communities in Iowa. The IFIS represents a hybrid of file and compute servers, including a High Performance Computing cluster, …
Short-Term Hydropower Optimization Using A Time-Decomposition Algorithm, Jonathan R. Lamontagne, Jery Russell Stedinger
Short-Term Hydropower Optimization Using A Time-Decomposition Algorithm, Jonathan R. Lamontagne, Jery Russell Stedinger
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Hydropower operations optimization models select a sequence of releases from one or more reservoirs that maximizes the expected benefit while honoring many social and environmental constraints. A 3-tiered time-decomposition algorithm is adopted to compute optimal sub-daily releases for the Harris Station reservoir in Maine, USA. This involves solving nested optimization models, each with a different planning horizon and time-step, where the longer-term planning models inform the shorter-term models. This allows for rapid optimization of short-term operations, while efficiently considering seasonal objectives and constraints. In the case study presented, 6-hr release decisions in a weekly model are made by iteratively solving …

No-point (diffuse) pollution is a key environmental pressure effecting water quality and ecology in lakes and rivers. Many governmental and NGO bodies are working to tacking the problem but their efforts are constrained by the complexities of the problem. To enable the spatial targeting of the mitigation measures at the landscape scale, the SCIMAP risk mapping approach was developed by Durham and Lancaster Universities in the UK. The approach was well received but the desktop implementation created problems for users. NGO users generally did not have the required datasets or GIS skills. Governmental users within a corporate managed IT environment …

In the UK, urban river basins are particularly vulnerable to flash floods due to short and intense rainfall. This paper presents potential flood resilience approaches for the highly urbanised Wortley Beck river basin, south west of the Leeds city centre. The reach of Wortley Beck is approximately 6km long with contributing catchment area of 30km2 that drain into the River Aire. Lower Wortley has experienced regular flooding over the last few years from a range of sources, including Wortley Beck and surface and ground water, that affects properties both upstream and downstream of Farnley Lake as well as Wortley Ring …

High Performance Gpu Speed-Up Strategies For The Computation Of 2d Inundation Models, Asier Lacasta, Mario Morales-Hernández, Javier Murillo, Pilar García-Navarro, Reinaldo Garcia
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Two-dimensional (2D) models are increasingly used for inundation assesements in situations involving large domains of millions of computational elements and long-time scales of several months. Practical applications often involve a compromise between spatial accuracy and computational efficiency and to achieve the necessary spatial resolution, rather fine meshes become necessary requiring more data storage and very long computer times comparable to the real simulated process (e.g. 1 month of real-time simulation may require 1 month of computations approximately). Obviously, using conventional 2D non-parallelized models (CPU based) make simulations impractical in real project applications, but improving the performance of such complex models …

Dynamic Condition Approach To Study The Self-Purification Capacity Of Colombian Water Bodies Case: Cauca River And Salvajina Dam, Alberto Galvis, Isabel Cristina Hurtado, Carlos Martínez-Cano, Juan Gabriel Urrego
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The impact on water resources caused by municipal wastewater discharge has become a critical and ever-growing environmental and public health problem. In order to be able to efficiently address this problem, it is important to adopt an integrated approach that includes a decrease in and control of contamination at its source. These principles have been successfully applied in the industrial sector and now these concepts are also being applied to integrated water resources management. In this context the conceptual model of the Three Steps Strategic Approach (3-SSA) was developed, consisting of: 1) minimization and prevention, 2) treatment for reuse and …

Small and medium-sized companies and other enterprises (SMEs) around the world are exposed to flood risk and many of the 4.5 million in the UK are at risk. As SMEs represent almost half of total business turnover in the UK, their protection is a vital part of the drive for greater climate change resilience. However, few have measures in place to ensure the continuity of their activities during a flood and its aftermath. The SESAME project aims to develop tools that encourage businesses to discover ways of becoming more resilient to floods and to appreciate how much better off they …

Life and property losses because of disasters such as flood and landslide are getting dramatic increases for past years. Frequent extreme weather events have even worsened the damages globally. Given sufficient information in advance, disaster preparedness and management can be well-settled. The damages and losses can be mitigated and even prevented. An early disaster warning system with enough leadtimes is essential for decision-makers to take prevented measures and execute cautions. This study proposed a prototype of an early disaster warning system which issues warnings for rainfall related disasters such as flood and landslide. Using ensemble quantitative precipitation forecasts, the system …

According to the World Risk Report released by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security, the Philippines is ranked third globally in terms of disaster risk. One of those disaster risks is flooding which poses a serious challenge to development and the lives of the people. Public health risks and social vulnerability were usually overlooked, undermined and only very little attention is given. Thus, this study focuses on these aspects. This study was an exploratory step towards assessing vulnerability particularly to fluvial flooding, it was a rapid assessment of the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) of the …

Inherent uncertainties are the primary constraints and concerns for any robust urban flood management programme. Selection of better retrofitting options to tackle uncertainties involves the process of evaluating the technical and financial feasibility of a wide range of options. In this paper, we present a case study of a catchment in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where we apply evolutionary methods to search for optimal retrofitting opportunities to cope with uncertainties. Flexible options such as detention storage at nodes and provision of sustainable drainage systems have been identified. The optimal storage volumes for detention storage at the nodes and optimal …
Temperature Dynamics Investigation At Small And Shallow Lakes Using Hydrodynamic Model, Ali Abbasi, Nick Van De Giesen
Temperature Dynamics Investigation At Small And Shallow Lakes Using Hydrodynamic Model, Ali Abbasi, Nick Van De Giesen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A three-dimensional time-dependent hydrodynamic and heat transport model of Lake Binaba, a shallow and small dam reservoir in Ghana, emphasizing the simulation of dynamics and thermal structure has been developed. Most numerical studies of temperature dynamics in reservoirs are based on one- or two-dimensional models. These models are not applicable for reservoirs characterized with complex flow pattern and unsteady heat exchange between the atmosphere and water surface. Continuity, momentum and temperature transport equations have been solved. Proper assignment of boundary conditions, especially surface heat fluxes, has been found crucial in simulating the lake’s hydrothermal dynamics. This model is based on …

Change In Depletion Curve Under Projected Climatic Scenarios For A Snow Covered Catchment In Arunachal Himalaya (India), Arnab Bandyopadhyay, Aditi Bhadra, Tobom Rukbo, Sanayanbi Hodam
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Snow cover depletion curve (SDC) is very much required for snowmelt runoff modeling in any snow-dominated catchment. The present study deals with the change in depletion curve of snow covered Nuranang river basin of Arunachal Pradesh under A1B, A2 (High carbon emission), B1 (Low carbon emission) and IPCC commitment projected climatic scenarios. Snow covered area (SCA) percentages were determined by using NDSI model. The temperature change under different scenarios shows that A1B climatic scenario has the highest incremental temperature change. Under IPCC commitment scenario, as the temperature and precipitation are expected to be restored to present condition after some years, …

Improvement Of The National Flood Early Warning System In Norway – Flood Level Warnings And Uncertainties, Péter Borsányi, Byman Hamududu, Sivachandran Navaratnam, Elin Langsholt
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This work describes the methods and procedures applied to improve the national flood warning system in Norway by including water level forecasts at non-gauged but important locations and information on the corresponding uncertainty. In this approach, only a subset of model variables (inputs) and parameters are treated as uncertain. It is found that visualization of the forecasts is challenging, and therefore a number of experimental solutions are discussed.
On The Added Value Of Radar Data In Hydrological Modelling And Flood Forecasting, Niels Van Steenbergen, Patrick Willems
On The Added Value Of Radar Data In Hydrological Modelling And Flood Forecasting, Niels Van Steenbergen, Patrick Willems
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Good quality rainfall data are essential in hydrological modelling and flood forecasting. Classically, rain gauge data are being used as rainfall input for hydrological modelling, but they only provide point information. Because rainfall can be highly variable in space, radar images can provide important additional spatial information, but the quantitative rainfall data quality of these images is often limited. Merging techniques between rain gauge and radar data can provide a solution to this problem. In this research, a simple kriging merging technique, making use of two C-band radars, is tested for the Demer catchment in Belgium. Three periods with different …

Analysis Of Combined Effects Of Input Uncertainty And Parameter Uncertainty In Hydrological Modelling, Qiang Dai, Dawei Han, Miguel A. Rico-Ramirez
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Uncertainty of a hydrological model mainly stems from a lack of understanding and knowledge about the real hydrological process. Input uncertainty and parameter uncertainty are considered to be the two major uncertainty sources of hydrological model. Until now, enormous studies have aimed at calibrating model parameters and estimating model uncertainty. However, these studies mainly ascribe the model output uncertainty to the unknown non-physical parameters. In fact, rainfall, especially of weather radar rainfall, is widely recognized as a main error source. There are seldom studies that aim to explicitly describe model input and parameter uncertainty simultaneously. For this reason, in this …
Combined Vertical And Lateral Channel Evolution Numerical Modeling, Yong G. Lai, Kuowei Wu
Combined Vertical And Lateral Channel Evolution Numerical Modeling, Yong G. Lai, Kuowei Wu
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Vertical stream bed erosion has been studied routinely and its modeling is getting widespread acceptance. The same cannot be said with lateral stream bank erosion since its measurement or numerical modeling is very challenging. Bank erosion, however, can be important to channel morphology. It may contribute significantly to the overall sediment budget of a stream, is a leading cause of channel migration, and is the cause of major channel maintenance. However, combined vertical and lateral channel evolution is seldom addressed. In this study, a new geofluival numerical model is developed to simulate combined vertical and lateral channel evolution. Vertical erosion …

A Management Indicator Program For Water Operating Agencies, Martha Patricia Hansen Rodríguez, Víctor Hugo Alcocer Yamanaka, Yenni Laurel Varela
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The management indicator program for operating agencies (PIGOO, for its initials in Spanish) specifies a set of 28 management indicators that help to measure the operational aspects, financial aspects and efficiencies of potable water supply systems. Ideally, the performance indicators of an operating agency should be linked to an objective or strategy established by that same agency. The performance indicators are calculated based on annual data, variables such as the volume of water produced, the number of employees, total income and expenditures, rate of leaks and claims. The Mexican Institute of Water Technology has conducted PIGOO since 2005. From 2005 …

A Services' Frameworks And Support Services For Environmental Information Communities, Nicholas J. Car, Matthew Paul Stenson, Simon J. D. Cox, Robert A. Atkinson, Peter Fitch
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
For environmental datasets to be used effectively via the Internet, they must present standardized data and metadata services and link the two. The Open Geospatial Consortium's (OGC) web services (WFS, WMS, CSW etc.), have seen widespread use over many years however few organizations have deployed information architectures based solely on OGC standards for all their datasets. Collections of organizations within a thematically-based community certainly cannot realistically be expected to do so. To enable service use flexibility we present a services framework - a Data Brokering Layer (DBL). A DBL presents access to data and metadata services for datasets, and links …

The data model integration tools and techniques are being applied in variety of hydroinformatics applications ranging from simple data mining for pattern discovery to data driven models and numerical model error correction. The present study explores the possibility of employing “genetic programming” (GP) as an offline data driven modelling …
Uncertainty Characterization Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model By Using Grey Numbers, Stefano Alvisi, Anna Bernini, Marco Franchini
Uncertainty Characterization Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model By Using Grey Numbers, Stefano Alvisi, Anna Bernini, Marco Franchini
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A procedure for characterizing global uncertainty of a rainfall-runoff simulation model based on using grey numbers is presented. By using the grey numbers technique the uncertainty is characterized by an interval; once the parameters of the rainfall-runoff model have been properly defined as grey numbers, by using the grey mathematics and functions it is possible to obtain simulated discharges in the form of grey numbers whose envelope defines a band which represents the vagueness/uncertainty associated with the simulated variable. The grey numbers representing the model parameters are estimated in such a way that the band obtained from the envelope of …

A Hybrid Piecewise-Linear/Newton Approach To Solve Multi-Period Production And Distribution Planning Problems In Large Water Supply Networks, Derek Verleye, El-Houssaine Aghezzaf
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Efficient production and distribution planning of water is a challenging problem that many drinking water companies face. The development of effective tools to optimally supply this vital resource is therefore essential. Nowadays, many drinking water companies rely on simulation software packages (EPANET, InfoWorks) for the daily operation of their network. This software allows the user to make accurate and thus reliable simulations of the network for a chosen configuration. However, the user-defined scenario’s do not consider the lowest operating costs. Very often the pumps are working at a suboptimal point in their system curve and water production centers are not …

A Provenance Methodology And Architecture For Scientific Projects Containing Automated And Manual Processes, Nicholas J. Car, Matthew Paul Stenson, Michael Hartcher
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The management of provenance metadata is a pressing issue for high profile, complex, science projects needing to trace their data products’ lineage in order to withstand scrutiny. To represent, capture, transfer, store and deliver provenance data from a project’s processes, specialized metadata, new IT system components and the human and automated procedures are necessary. The collection of metadata, components and procedures can be termed a provenance methodolo-gy and architecture. Through our involvement with several large Australian science projects ([4], [5], [6], [7], [11]), we have developed a methodology that provides: Use Case assessments of project clients’ requirements for provenance; team …
