Real-Time Reservoir Operation For Drought Management Considering Ensemble Streamflow Predictions Derived From Operational Forecasts Of Precipitation In Japan, Daisuke Nohara, Tomoharu Hori
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Ensemble hydrological predictions are considered to be useful for robust reservoir operation as they include multiple possible hydrological scenarios in the future as well as dispersion of the predictions, from which the degree of prediction uncertainty can be estimated. Although operational ensemble hydrological predictions have been available in many regions, they have not yet been widely used in the actual reservoir management due to the difficulty in the handling such complex information. In order to facilitate effective utilization of ensemble hydrological predictions in the actual reservoir management, a real-time reservoir operation method for drought management is developed considering operational ensemble …

A regional flood warning system based on a combination of data processing, modelling and communication tools is proposed. The system is founded on a common framework MIKE CUSTOMISED, giving great flexibility in tailoring solutions as needed. Where more conventional flood warning systems focus mainly on discharge predictions in the main rivers the proposed system considers the whole catchment area – flood plain, as well as tributaries. Local floods on smaller streams and tributaries may cause high damages, particular in urban areas. Such cases require timely reasonably accurate forecasts for proper decision making. The MIKE SHE modelling system is used to …

A fully automated Event Recognition System (ERS) for the near real-time detection of pipe bursts and other network events such as boundary valve status changes and pressure management valve faults has been recently developed by the authors. This paper focuses on the further development of this system. The aim is to enhance the ERS approximate event location and alarm handling capabilities by developing and testing a new methodology that, in the case of cascading District Metered Areas (DMAs), automatically determines in which DMA an event occurred. The newly developed methodology makes use of a set of heuristic rules based on …

As a highly urbanized and flood prone region, Flanders has experienced multiple floods causing significant damage in the past. In response to the floods of 1998 and 2002 the Flemish Environment Agency, responsible for managing 1 400 km of unnavigable rivers, started setting up a real time flood forecasting system in 2003. Currently the system covers almost 2 000 km of unnavigable rivers, for which flood forecasts are accessible online (www.waterinfo.be). The forecasting system comprises more than 1 000 hydrologic and 50 hydrodynamic models which are supplied with radar rainfall, rainfall forecasts and on-site observations. Forecasts for the next 2 …

Sequential Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Of A Drainage Canal Using Implicit Diffusive Wave Model, Min Xu, Dirk Schwanenberg
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Model predictive control (MPC) is an efficient control method to regulate water systems, for both water quantity and quality. It can generate optimal control solutions based on model predictions over a finite horizon. There are many ways of categorizing MPC. In this research, the predictive control uses a nonlinear internal model and solves optimization in a sequential manner, thus called Sequential Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (SeNMPC). An implicit scheme is applied on the internal model, diffusive wave model, to avoid time step limitation for model stability. This is often important in real-time control applications where large control time step and …

Model-Based Sectorization Of Water Distribution Networks For Increased Energy Efficiency, Mario E. Castro Gama, Pan Quan, Andreja Jonoski, Carlo Chiesa
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Efficient management of water supply systems is nowadays one of the most important challenges for water utilities. Common efficiency gains in such systems can be achieved by reducing the leakages and by reducing the energy consumption. For the case of minimization of energy consumption a new technique for sectorization and efficient pressure management is presented, based on water distribution modeling and optimization. The technique is applicable to situations when energy consumption reduction can be achieved by dividing a large Pressure Management Zone (PMZ) in smaller, but more efficient PMZs, or sectors. It consists of three steps: 1) An initial selection …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Rain gauge data in developing countries are usually very limited, which constrains most of the hydrological modelling applications. The satellite based rainfall estimates could be a promising choice and hence can be used as a surrogate to ground-based rainfall. However, the usefulness of these products needs to be evaluated for hydrological application such as for pesticide predictions. The present study compares the contaminant transport simulation with the utilization of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rainfall compared with rain gauge data from the field site. Through this study, transport trends of the pesticide, Thiram, a dithiocarbamate, at different time and depth …

Using Multi-Scale Uncertainty Information And Specific Forecast Skill To Improve Reservoir Operations, Thomas S. Lowry, Nathalie Voisin, Mark S. Wigmosta
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Optimization of reservoir operations to time series of forecasted inflows are constrained by a set of multiple objectives that span many time scales, however the temporally evolving skill of the forecasts are usually not considered in the objective functions. For example, a flow forecast time series extending from 1 day to 6 months consists of a medium range flow forecast that draws its skill from initial conditions and weather forecasts and a seasonal flow forecast that relies on the initial conditions only. The skill of the medium range flow forecast is the daily and aggregated values with a range of …

Study On Water Age In An Estuary Using Three-Dimensional Models, Yuheng Ren, Binliang Lin, Jian Sun
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The age of water (AW) concept is applied in the Pearl River Estuary to investigate the water exchange process in three-dimensional space and its seasonal variation. A three-dimensional AW model is built based on the advanced hydrodynamic model MIKE3, and the model has been verified against a field survey dataset in the Pearl River Estuary. Using this model, the spatio-temporal distributions of water age are numerically determined in response to hydrodynamic factors. The predictions indicate that the mean AW values inside the Pearl River Estuary during the wet season and the dry season are approximately 10 days and 25 days, …
Urban Water Demand Characterization And Short-Term Forecasting – The Icewater Project Approach, Antonio Candelieri, Dante Conti, Davide Cappellini, Francesco Archetti
Urban Water Demand Characterization And Short-Term Forecasting – The Icewater Project Approach, Antonio Candelieri, Dante Conti, Davide Cappellini, Francesco Archetti
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
An approach based on time series clustering and Support Vector Regression (SVR) is proposed to characterize typical daily urban water demand patterns and use them to perform short term forecasts. Time series clustering is aimed at retrieving the hourly quantity of water supplied during each day within a specific time window (e.g. last one or two years). A suitable distance measure has been considered to capture differences in shape and volume between time series. The final goal is to group similar daily water demand curves and then summarize them in correspondent “prototypal” patterns. A post processing step is then performed …

Setting Priorities On The Functional Status Of Hydraulic Structures In Mountainous Catchments, V. Juliette Cortes, Simone Sterlacchini, Thom Bogaard, Simone Frigerio, Luca Schenato, Alessandro Pasuto
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The frequent inspection of hydraulic structures in mountain catchments is important due to the changing interaction among water-related processes that take place in the context of hydro-meteorological hazards such as debris flow and flash floods. At first level inspections, reports from survey protocols carried out by trained citizen-volunteers are combined to provide an index that represent the status of the structure. The survey protocols aim at identifying needs for cleaning of obstructions or to pre-screen potential problems for a second level inspection or more technical and detailed inspection. Thus, reports are focused on the functional status for the following parameters: …

Exchange of scientific data and metadata between single users or organizations is a challenging task due to differences in data formats, the genesis of data collection, ontologies and prior knowledge of the users. Different data storage requirements, mostly defined by the structure, size and access scenarios, require also different data storage solutions, since there is no and there cannot be a data format which is suitable for all tasks and needs that occur especially in a scientific workflow. Besides data, the generation and handling of additional corresponding metadata leads us to the additional challenge of defining the "meaning" of data, …

Hybrid Control-Oriented Modeling Of Combined Sewer Networks: Barcelona Case Study, Bernat Joseph-Duran, Carlos Ocampo-Martinez, Gabriela Cembrano
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A hybrid linear model for real-time optimization-based control of a combined sewer network has been developed to be used for the minimization of pollution during storm events. The model takes into account delays and attenuation in sewers together with piecewise linear approximations for flow over weirs, overflows in junctions and flow re-entering the network after overflows. Using the proposed model, an Optimal Control Problem (OCP) is formulated, which can be efficiently solved by means of a mixed integer linear or quadratic programming problem. The performance of a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy solving consecutive OCPs is assessed by means of …

Hydrological Impacts Of Climate Change – Challenges, Uncertainty And Limitations, Shreedhar Maskey, Yurong Hu, Anshul Agarwal, Dinesh Bhatt
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
How climate change impacts water resources in the future is an important question that all hydrologists want to have an answer. Climate prediction scenarios are available from many Global Circulation Models for the 21st century. These prediction datasets are typically used as input to a hydrological model for simulating impacts on hydrology, particularly river runoff, evaporation, and storage changes. Because hydrological models are usually run on a much smaller resolutions than climate models, the climate prediction datasets are usually downscaled to represent local climate for using in a hydrological model. The uncertainty in the GCMs, downscaling and hydrological models makes …

Bayesian Parameter Estimation Of Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse (Mblrp) Poisson Cluster Model, Hyun-Han Kwon, Jang-Kyung Kim
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Stochastic rainfall generators or stochastic simulation have been widely employed to generate synthetic rainfall sequences which can be used in hydrologic models as inputs. The calibration of Poisson cluster stochastic rainfall generator (e.g. Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse, MBLRP) is seriously affected by local minima that is usually estimated from the local optimization algorithm. In this regard, global optimization techniques such as particle swarm optimization and shuffled complex evolution algorithm have been proposed to better estimate the parameters. Although the global search algorithm is designed to avoid the local minima, reliable parameter estimation of MBLRP model is not always feasible especially …
Decision Support Tool For Hydraulic Reliability Based Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Nemanja Trifunovic
Decision Support Tool For Hydraulic Reliability Based Design Of Water Distribution Networks, Nemanja Trifunovic
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The manuscript describes the decision support tool for design and hydraulic reliability assessment of water distribution networks. The reliability analyses that have been conducted on geometric-, hydraulic- and economic grounds all reflect the complexity of network resilience that is still difficult to generalise or classify, as well as it is impossible to asses without full integration of all three aspects. The tool that aims to achieve this integration processes a preselected seed of network sources and (demand) nodes prepared in EPANET without any pipe connection. It is composed of the modules for generation of various connectivity layouts by applying the …

Urban drainage systems are one of the most valuable public utilities in any community, which protects public health and the environment, nevertheless is one of the most overlooked infrastructures until considerable failures occurred. If there are not recurrent rehabilitation programs in place this vital infrastructure will decrease the level of service. This work presents an approach to find optimal rehabilitation measures based on the hydraulic performance of the system. To assess the performance of the urban drainage system a coupled 1D-2D model was developed. The model uses SWMM 5.0 for the 1D transport; to simulate the overland flow from the …

Data for water management is increasingly easy to access, it has finer spatial and temporal resolution, and it is available from various sources. Precipitation data can be obtained from meteorological stations, radar, satellites and weather models. Land use data is also available from different satellite products and different providers. The various sources of data may confirm each other or give very different values in space and time. However, from these various data sources, it can often not be judged beforehand that one data is correct and others are wrong. Each source has its own value for a particular purpose. The …

A New Methodology For Deriving Regional Time Of Concentration Equations Using Gis And Genetic Programming, Soroosh Sharifi, Mahdi Razaz
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Time of concentration (ToC) is the most frequently utilized time-scale parameter in hydrology which must be estimated accurately to ensure correct simulation of many different hydrological processes. Hydrologists have developed many empirical and semi-empirical methods for estimating ToC which are regional, watershed, and site-specific. Modellers are often confused by the number of ToC estimation methods and formulas and often select an equation without evaluating its correctness which leads to inaccurate simulation results. The importance of deriving and using regional ToC equations has been highlighted in many studies. In this paper, a methodology is proposed for deriving ToC equation(s) for watersheds …

Existing distributed hydrologic models are complex and computationally demanding for using as a rapid-forecasting policy-decision tool, or even as a class-room educational tool. In addition, platform dependence, specific input/output data structures and non-dynamic data-interaction with pluggable software components inside the existing proprietary frameworks make these models restrictive only to the specialized user groups. RWater is a web-based hydrologic analysis and modeling framework that utilizes the commonly used R software within the HUBzero cyber infrastructure of Purdue University. RWater is designed as an integrated framework for distributed hydrologic simulation, along with subsequent parameter optimization and visualization schemes. RWater provides platform independent …
