An Ensemble Approach For Typhoon Runoff Simulation With Perturbed Rainfall Forecasts In Taiwan, Lan Yu, Lloyd Hock Chye Chua, Dong-Sin Shih Aug 2014

An Ensemble Approach For Typhoon Runoff Simulation With Perturbed Rainfall Forecasts In Taiwan, Lan Yu, Lloyd Hock Chye Chua, Dong-Sin Shih

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Under the background of demand for accurate and reliable flood forecasting, various methodologies are used to model floods. However, not all the phases of the hydrograph can be predicted by any models, even though the global optimum may be reached. In order to exploit the distinct information provided by different models, an ensemble approach is proposed to improve the forecasting accuracy and reliability. The ensemble precipitation estimates from a Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) model were used to as inputs to model the rainfall-runoff process in Taiwan. A Dynamic Evolving Neural-Fuzzy Inference System was applied to combining the predictions of the …

Data Assimilation And Multidimensional Model Coupling On The Adour Catchment, South-West Of France, Sébastien Barthélémy, Sophie Ricci, Nicole Goutal, Etienne Le Pape, Olivier Thual

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

This study focuses on the hydrodynamic modelling of the tidally influenced “Adour maritime” catchment located in South-West of France. The local SPC is in charge of operational flood-forecasting and for that purpose, the 1D hydraulic software MASCARET developed at EDF is used. Due to various sources of uncertainties on the hydraulic parameters and hydrological forcing, the free-run is imperfect and should be corrected for improved forecast of extreme events. An Ensemble Kalman Filter algorithm was implemented on top of the hydraulic model using the OpenPalm coupler to assimilate hourly water level in-situ data from observing stations. The water-level and discharge …

Experimental Design For Model Discrimination And Precise Parameter Estimation In Wds Analysis, Giovanna Darvini Aug 2014

Experimental Design For Model Discrimination And Precise Parameter Estimation In Wds Analysis, Giovanna Darvini

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

In water distribution system (WDS) analysis, the initial stages of model assembling, which involve collecting basic WDS data (network topology, asset data, etc.), demand allocation and validation or correction of gross input data errors, are important precursors for calibration of the network. During these first steps one must define which model of the network is the most suitable one for a particular application, as the final results and conclusions usually depend on the model used to perform the simulations and provide the interpretation of the analyzed problem. Sometimes, it is not possible to make a proper choice based solely on …

Performance Evaluation Of Smos Soil Moisture Retrieval Parameters For Hydrological Application, Prashant K. Srivastava, Dawei Han, Miguel A. Rico-Ramirez, Peggy O'Neil, Tanvir Islam, Manika Gupta

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Microwave remote sensing has high potential for soil moisture retrieval. However, the efficient retrieval of soil moisture depends on optimally choosing the soil moisture retrieval parameters. In this study first the initial evaluation of SMOS L2 product is performed and then four approaches regarding soil moisture retrieval from SMOS brightness temperature are reported. The radiative transfer equation based tau-omega rationale is used in this study for the soil moisture retrievals. The single channel algorithms (SCA) using H polarisation is implemented with modifications, which includes the effective temperatures simulated from ECMWF (downscaled using WRF-NOAH Land Surface Model (LSM)) and MODIS. The …

The Application Of A Dynamic Openmi Coupling Between A Regional Climate Model And A Distributed Surface Water-Groundwater Model, Michael Brian Butts, Martin Drews, Morten Andreas Dahl Larsen, Sara Lerer, Søren Højmark Rasmussen, Jesper Grooss, Jesper Overgaard, Jens Christian Refsgaard

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The understanding of interactions between the atmosphere, the land surface and the subsurface hydrology plays a key role in ensuring sustainable development of water resources and terrestrial ecosystems. The evaluation of climate adaptation measures requires the ability to reliably simulate the impact of different anthropogenic effects such as changes in land use, interventions such as reservoirs for flood control and irrigation, conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater under projections of future climatic conditions and variability. The interaction between climate and groundwater are often neglected in climate models and climate assessment and few studies have investigated how groundwater systems will …

Ensuring Reliable Measurements In Remote Aquatic Sensor Networks, Goncalo Joao Vitorino Jesus, Anabela Oliveira, Antonio Casimiro Aug 2014

Ensuring Reliable Measurements In Remote Aquatic Sensor Networks, Goncalo Joao Vitorino Jesus, Anabela Oliveira, Antonio Casimiro

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

A flood monitoring system comprises an extensive network of water sensors, a bundle of forecast simulations models, and a decision-support information system. A cascade of uncertainties present in each part of the system affects a reliable flood alert and response. The timeliness and quality of data gathering, used subsequently in forecasting models, is affected by the pervasive nature of the monitoring network where aquatic sensors are vulnerable to external disturbances affecting the accuracy of data acquisition. Existing solutions for aquatic monitoring are composed by heterogeneous sensors usually unable to ensure reliable measurements in complex scenarios, due to specific effects of …

Short Term Reservoirs Operation On The Seine River: Performance Analysis Of Tree-Based Model Predictive Control, Andrea Ficchi, Luciano Raso, Pierre-Olivier Malaterre, David Dorchies, Maxime Jay-Allemand, Francesca Pianosi, Peter-Jules Van Overloop, Guillaume Thirel

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The Seine River, in France, flows through territories of large economic value, among which the metropolitan area of Paris. A system of four reservoirs operates upstream to regulate the river flows in order to protect the area against extreme events, such as floods and droughts. Current reservoirs management is based on reactive filling curves, designed from an analysis of historical hydrological regimes. The efficiency of this management strategy is jeopardized when inflows are significantly different from their seasonal average. To improve the current management strategy, we investigated the use of Tree-Based Model Predictive Control (TB-MPC). TB-MPC is a proactive and …

Stochastic And Deterministic Parameter Estimation Of Coupled Bacteria-Sediment Fate And Transport In Streams, Tri Le, Arash Massoudieh Aug 2014

Stochastic And Deterministic Parameter Estimation Of Coupled Bacteria-Sediment Fate And Transport In Streams, Tri Le, Arash Massoudieh

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

E. Coli is widely used as an indicator organism to assess the risk of pathogenic bacteria in water bodies. Due to their strong association with suspended and bed sediments, the fate and transport of micro-organisms in water bodies is strongly controlled by sediment dynamics. It has been shown that bed sediments can contain orders of magnitude larger pathogen concentration than the water column and these sediment-associated bacteria can be released into the water column as a result of high flow velocities that cause sediment resuspension. In this presentation parameter estimation of a mechanistic model of bacteria-sediment interaction using a deterministic …

Adaptive, Decentralized, And Real-Time Sampling Strategies For Resource Constrained Hydraulic And Hydrologic Sensor Networks, Brandon Preclaro Wong, Branko Kerkez Aug 2014

Adaptive, Decentralized, And Real-Time Sampling Strategies For Resource Constrained Hydraulic And Hydrologic Sensor Networks, Brandon Preclaro Wong, Branko Kerkez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

We discuss the development and performance of a low-power sensor node (hardware, software and algorithms) that autonomously controls the sampling interval of a suite of sensors based on local state estimates and future predictions of water flow. The problem is motivated by the need to accurately reconstruct abrupt state changes in urban watersheds and stormwater systems. Presently, the detection of these events is limited by the temporal resolution of sensor data. It is often infeasible, however, to increase measurement frequency due to energy and sampling constraints. This is particularly true for real-time water quality measurements, where sampling frequency is limited …

Flood Resilience Assessment In Urban Drainage Systems Through Multi-Objective Optimisation, Carlos Martínez-Cano, Beheshtah Toloh, Arlex Sanchez-Torres, Zoran Vojinović, Damir Brdjanovic

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

In future years, economic development, urbanisation and heavy rainfall events are expected to increase in urban areas, in particular in developing countries. It is well known that urban development has a strong impact on the water cycle such as increase of flood peaks and volume, decrease of base flow, hydraulic stress and water pollution. Resilience measures are still needed to improve urban flood risk, the possibilities to provide indicators that could be used to characterize urban resilience related to flooding is outmost importance. The work described here presents an optimisation framework for urban drainage rehabilitation that incorporates in the decision …

An Open Visualization Tool (Openvt) For Mesh Based Water Models, Quan Pan, Mario E. Castro Gama, Ioana Popescu

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Worldwide there has been a lot of developments of numerical models for water related problems, using mesh based approaches. The models are usually released with their own data formats and visualization tools. Computer power has developed greatly in the last 10-15 years resulting in capabilities of better representing physical processes, hence the size of output results becomes larger and larger. Taking this into account present paper presents the development of an open visualization tool (openVT) for mesh based water models, which has functions for loading and visualizing results from a suite of modeling systems, regardless of their data structures. The …

Prediction And Dissemination Of Bathing Water Quality In England And Wales – A Pilot Study, Juzer F. Dhondia, Deborah Tyrrell, Daniel Twigt, Ian Dunhill

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Water quality at some bathing waters can be adversely affected by heavy rainfall resulting in water running off the land, picking up faecal contaminants from the catchment and discharging this to bathing waters. The Environment Agency of England and Wales analyzed the relationship between water quality and rainfall at each bathing site. This relationship between rainfall and water quality depends on the intensity and duration of the rainfall and considering each bathing sites individual characteristics such as tidal flows, wind, run-off from surrounding catchment. This paper describes a Pilot study for setting up an operational bathing water quality prediction system …

A Dss For Reservoirs Operation Based On The Execution Of Formal Models, Antonio Linares, Jesus Regodon, Laura Panizo, Maria Del Mar Gallardo, Pedro Merino

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Controlling the evolution of a reservoir in a flood episode can be critical, especially in Mediterranean basins where the concentration time is very short. In this situation, an automatic software tool can help the reservoir manager to make a quick decision. In this paper we present a DSS based on the execution of formal models by means of model checking. This technique exhaustively explores the different execution branches of a model of the system. The DSS addresses two flood control tasks. First, the DSS simulates the evolution of the reservoir (the water stored and released) when applying a predefined flood …

Assimilation Of Heterogeneous Uncertain Data, Having Different Observational Errors, In Hydrological Models, Maurizio Mazzoleni, Leonardo Alfonso, Dimitri P. Solomatine

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Accurate real-time forecasting of river water level is an important issue that has to be addressed in order to prevent and mitigate water-related risk. To this end, data assimilation methods have been used to improve the forecasts ability of water model merging observations coming from stations and model simulations. As a consequence of the increasing availability of dynamic and cheap sensors, having variable life-span, space and temporal coverage, the citizens are becoming an active part in information capturing, evaluation and communication. On the other hand, it is difficult to assess the uncertain related to the observation coming from such sensors. …

Effect Of Sediment Releasing Operation From Reservoir Outlets On The Water Treatment Plant Downstream, Jihn-Sung Lai, Fong-Zuo Lee, Cheng-Chia Huang, Gwo-Wen Hwang, Shang-Shu Shih, Wen-Da Guo, Chia-Hui Chou, Yih-Chi Tan

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

With steep slope and strong rainfall intensity, landslide and debris flow could generate huge amount of sediment yield from the watershed, typically during typhoon floods in Taiwan. As such huge amount of sediment moved into a reservoir, serious sedimentation problem reduced storage of reservoir due to decrease of flow velocity and without sufficient sediment releasing bottom outlet. As a result, using flood discharge to release sediment during Typhoon or rain fall duration is very important. This study adopts the data of field observation from outlet structures of the Shihmen reservoir to establish the operational strategies of sediment releasing rule and …

A Virtual Lab Environment For Improving Students’ Understanding Of Infiltration And Runoff Processes, Tom Vanwalleghem, Cristina Aguilar, Miriam Carpintero, Antonio Espejo-Pérez, Juan Vicente Giráldez, María José Polo

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Infiltration of water in the soil is a key process in the hydrological cycle and its understanding is paramount for students of any course related to Hydrology. Different equations exist, which, in function of boundary conditions and the level of detail required in any particular case can become complex to solve in an analytical way. Water movement in the soil can be described by the Richards equation, but its solution requires numerical methods. Therefore, amongst the most used ways of calculating water infiltration are the Green and Ampt method, Horton’s equation, Philip’s equation and the Curve Number method. In all …

Estimation Of Offtake Discharge And Cross-Device Parameters Using Data Assimilation For The Automatic Control Of An Irrigation Canal, Pierre-Olivier Malaterre, David Dorchies, Jean-Pierre Baume Aug 2014

Estimation Of Offtake Discharge And Cross-Device Parameters Using Data Assimilation For The Automatic Control Of An Irrigation Canal, Pierre-Olivier Malaterre, David Dorchies, Jean-Pierre Baume

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The automatic control of open surface hydraulic systems such as Rivers (with dams and/or hydropower plants) or irrigation canals (with gated cross-devices) almost always use hydraulic models. These models can be used in different manners, either just to test and validate controllers prior to implementation, to tune the controller parameters off-line, or used on-line in real-time. The control algorithm calculates the control action variables u, using measured variables z obtained from the real system, in order to achieve some objectives for some controlled variables y. These models have always limited precision due to unknown or wrong: parameters, input variables and …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

There are several key modelling challenges in addressing the complementary requirements of the Water Framework Directive and the Groundwater Directive. The first is to consider groundwater, surface water, water quality and ecosystems as an integrated system and develop modelling tools capable of representing these interactions. For example, the restoration of wetlands often requires an understanding of the interaction of surface water and groundwater quantity and quality. Secondly while static indicator-based or statistical approaches are widely used for overall management, the actual ecosystem is highly dynamic and both the actual response to different threats and impact of measures will also be …

One way to achieve these goals is to specify a robust model that structures this scientific information. This paper presents a model that governs the scientific activities, inputs and products for bioregional assessments (BAs), which provide information on the ecology, hydrology, geology and hydrogeology of a bioregion with explicit assessment of the potential direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of coal seam gas and coal mining development on water resources. This scientific information will be available for all interested parties …

Meteomap: Generation Of Meteorological Variables For Distributed Physically-Based Hydrological Modeling, Cristina Aguilar, Javier Herrero, Agustín Millares, Miguel A. Losada, María José Polo Aug 2014

Meteomap: Generation Of Meteorological Variables For Distributed Physically-Based Hydrological Modeling, Cristina Aguilar, Javier Herrero, Agustín Millares, Miguel A. Losada, María José Polo

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Distributed energy and water balance models require time-series surfaces of the meteorological variables involved in hydrological processes. Most of the hydrological GIS-based models apply simple interpolation techniques to extrapolate the point scale values registered at weather stations at a watershed scale. In mountainous areas, where the monitoring network ineffectively covers the complex terrain heterogeneity, simple geostatistical methods for spatial interpolation are not always representative enough, and algorithms that explicitly or implicitly account for the features creating strong local gradients in the meteorological variables must be applied. Originally developed as a meteorological pre-processing tool for a complete hydrological model (WiMMed), MeteoMap …

Hydrological Ensemble Forecasting And Data Assimilation With An Integrated Hydrological Modelling System, Henrik Madsen, Diana Lucatero, Marc Ridler, Donghua Zhang, Jens Christian Refsgaard, Karsten Høgh Jensen

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Hydrological forecasting is an important instrument for more effective water management, such as warning and protection against water-related hazards, real-time operation of water infrastructure, improved water allocation, and environmental monitoring. Recent advances within radar rainfall estimation and nowcasting, ensemble-based numerical weather prediction (NWP), in-situ and satellite monitoring, and hydrological data assimilation are opening up new opportunities in real-time hydrological forecasting. NWP ensemble products can be used as input to hydrological forecast models to produce probabilistic forecasts and estimation of forecast uncertainty of the hydrological variables of interest. In this regard, key scientific challenges are understanding, quantification, and propagation of the …

Floodalert: A Simplified Radar-Based Ews For Urban Flood Warning, Xavier Llort, Rafael Sánchez-Diezma, Alvaro Rodríguez, David Sancho, Marc Berenguer, Daniel Sempere-Torres

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Urban floods can be caused by intense rainfall accumulations in short time periods that eventually exceed the capacity of the sewer networks. Despite the efforts made in the last years in all cities to increase the sewer’s capacity many cities are still exposed to these heavy rainfall events. In this work, we present a simplified flood Early Warning System, called FloodAlert, based on the use of radar observations to issue local flood warnings. Although precipitation accumulation estimates based on radar observations may suffer from different sources of error, they may also be the quickest way to obtain a reliable estimate …

Hidromet: A Cloud-Based Ews Platform For Real Time Urban Flood Warning, Alvaro Rodríguez, Xavier Llort, David Sancho, Rafael Sánchez-Diezma, Ramon Bella, Vicente Gomez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Urban real time flood’s Early Warning Systems have been traditionally based on the use of punctual precipitation observations (raingauges) to model the sewer network’s behaviour by means of hydraulic models. Since a key issue in the EWS is the leadtime in detecting potential risks, Hidromet takes advantage of radar nowcasting techniques to feed a hydraulic model, not only with observed precipitation by raingauges, but also with forecasted precipitation for the following few hours. Radar nowcasting techniques allow forecasting the precipitation with a high degree of accuracy. This fact, together with the rapid update of the forecasts (typically around 10 minutes), …
