Data-Driven Surrogate Models For Flood Defence Failure Estimation : “Jarillon” Of Cali, Colombia Case Study, Juan Aguilar, Jord Warmink, Ralph Schielen, Suzanne Hulscher
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The city of Cali is the main urban center of the south-western part of Colombia. It is located along the Cauca river, the second largest in the country. At the moment, the embankment located along the left margin that protects the city is designed for a return period of 100 years. In this study is intended to make a probabilistic analysis for dike failure for the present state of this flood defence. The water levels inside the main stream are highly sensitive to the peak discharge of upstream near tributaries which must be included in the analysis. An existent hydrodynamic …

Hydrodynamic And Water Quality Surrogate Modeling For Reservoir Operation, Juan Aguilar, Schalk-Jan Van Andel, Micha Werner, Dimitri P. Solomatine
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A methodology is developed for reservoir release decisions considering forecasted downstream dissolved oxygen local conditions. River water quality management using reservoirs focuses mainly on how to develop a release schedule that may improve downstream conditions based on the seasonal change of the water quality within the reservoir. This improvement, however does not take into account the downstream local water quality state, which in certain cases might be more important, as the pollutant load downstream could be diluted with the upstream available volume released from the reservoir. Field sampling collected data suggest that the dissolved oxygen concentration decay produced by polluted …

Evaluating North Sea Water Level Monitoring Network Considering Uncertain Information Theory Quantities, Leonardo Alfonso, Elena Ridolfi, Sandra Gaytan, Francesco Napolitano, Fabio Russo
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Information-theory provides, among others, conceptual methods to quantify the amount of information contained in a random variable, as well as methods to quantify the amount of information contained and shared among two or more variables. Although these concepts have been successfully applied in Hydrology and other fields, the valuation of these quantities is sensible to different parameters used to estimate the probabilities that underline the entropy concept. Typical examples are the bin size of histograms used to compute probabilities and the Kendall correlation coefficient used to estimate copula entropy. The selection of these parameters has subsequent effects on other Information …

Model Predictive Control Of Water Levels In A Navigation Canal Affected By Resonance Waves, Klaudia Horváth, Eric Duviella, Mihály Petreczky, Lala Rajaoarisoa, Karine Chucket
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In order to operate navigation canals several requirements need to be met: keeping minimum ecological flow, flood protection, but also for safe operation the water level has to be kept within a certain range around the normal navigation level. The water level is disturbed by several factors: known (measured tributaries) and unknown (unknown tributaries, rain) inputs. However, the most important one is the operation of the locks. If the navigation reach is bounded by locks that overcome large elevation differences, their operation can create big disturbances. These locks should be operated fast enough to allow the crossing of several boats, …

Offset Free Model Predictive Control Of An Open Water Reach, Boran Ekin Aydin, Peter-Jules Van Overloop, Xin Tian
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Model predictive control (MPC) is a powerful tool which is used more and more to managing water systems such as reservoirs over a short-term prediction horizon. However, due to unknown disturbances present in the water system and other uncertainties, there is always a mismatch between the model and the actual system. To overcome this mismatch and achieve offset free control of the water system, the internal model of the MPC is updated by adding the disturbance dynamics of the actual system by means of a disturbance model. In this paper, the conditions to achieve offset free control for an open …

Drought is a natural disaster that affects millions of people across the globe. Lack of rainfall reduces crop yields and livestock productivity and in turn, food availability and income. In developing countries, these effects are even more detrimental. As droughts become more frequent, adaptation is a fundamental concern for countries and their policy makers. Hydrologic and system dynamics models were developed for a region in East Africa, focused on the Horn of Africa (ie. a region bordering Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia), an area well-known for frequent droughts due to unpredictable rainfall and high temperatures. The models simulate the interdependencies between …

Exploring Behavioral Economics Concepts In Flood Forecast Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Leonardo Alfonso, Schalk-Jan Van Andel
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This research presents further exploration of the results obtained during the decision-making game “Do probabilistic forecasts lead to better decisions?”, which Ramos et al (2012) conducted at the EGU General Assembly 2012 in the city of Vienna. In that game, several cases of flood forecasts with and without uncertainty information were presented to the participants, together with choices of actions to take. As decision-makers, they had to decide whether to open or not a gate which was the inlet of a retention basin designed to protect a town and face the consequences of making a bad decision: if they decided …

The Research And Application Of Remote Sensing Monitoring Method Of Actual Irrigated Area, Zhenyan Yi, Hongli Zhao, Yunzhong Jiang, Zhiguo Gan
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The value of actual irrigated area is an important indicator of irrigation water management, but due to wide space range of irrigated district, ground manual monitoring is very difficult to achieve. Remote sensing methods have a wide rapid coverage, high efficiency, real-time, objective and other advantages, which can be used to solve the difficulties in monitoring irrigated area. In this paper, a remote sensing monitoring method of irrigated area based on modified perpendicular drought index (MPDI) is researched and the differential thresholds for distinguishing irrigation are analyzed and proposed. The method was applied to 5 rounds of actual irrigated area …

Water quantity and quality monitoring plays a key role towards the development of a sustainable water sector. The required infrastructure needed to monitor and manage surface and groundwater systems are often lacking particularly in developing countries. When available, water quantity and quality data are invariably fragmented, intermittent, not shared, with deficient metadata, and stored in formats that hinder establishing seamless coupling with hydrological models. Most data are saved locally with little attention placed on defining and maintaining metadata on the collection protocols, geographic referencing, measurement accuracy, resolution, detection limits, and data censorship. These limitations present serious challenges in reaching sound …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Mediterranean catchments usually exhibit strong gradients of both weather variables at different time scales and soil uses, which add complexity to their hydrological modelling, especially in mountainous areas. WiMMed (Water integrated Management model for Mediterranean regions) model was designed to include such variability of scales in an operational suite capable of connecting GIS-based representations of the catchment (soil characteristics and uses, vegetation cover and snow dynamics) with advanced algorithms for simulating the energy and water balance on a physical basis. Widely used throughout the South of Spain, WiMMed efficiently represents the spatial patterns of precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and evapotranspiration …
Rediscovering Manning’S Equation Using Genetic Programming, Carlos F. Gaitan
Rediscovering Manning’S Equation Using Genetic Programming, Carlos F. Gaitan
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Open-channel hydraulics’ (OCH) research traditionally links empirical formulas to observational data. One of the most common equations in OCH is Manning’s formula for open channel flow (Q) driven by gravity (also known as the Gauckler-Manning-Strickler formula). The formula relates the cross-sectional average velocity (V=Q/A), the hydraulic radius (R), and the slope of the water surface (S) with a friction coefficient n, characteristic of the channel’s surface. Here we show a practical example where Genetic Programming (GP), a technique derived from Bioinformatics, can be used to derive an empirical relationship based on different synthetic datasets of the aforementioned parameters. Specifically, we …

An Artificial Neural Network-Based Rainfall Runoff Model For Improved Drainage Network Modelling, David Walker, Edward C. Keedwell, Dragan A. Savić, Richard Kellagher
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Modelling rainfall-runoff processes enables hydrologists to plan their response to flooding events. Urban drainage catchment modelling requires rainfall-runoff models as a prerequisite. In the UK, one of the main software tools used for drainage modelling is InfoWorks CS, based on relatively simple methods which are relatively robust in predicting runoff. This paper presents an alternative approach to modelling runoff that will allow for the complex inter-relation of runoff that occurs from impermeable areas, permeable areas, local surface storage and variation in rainfall induced infiltration. Apart from the uncertainties associated with the measurement of connected surfaces to the drainage system, the …

Warm water is an important factor in the water and energy nexus. The energy used to produce warm tap water is often 10 times higher than the operational energy to produce and distribute drinking water and to collect and treat wastewater together. Once used in a shower, bath or laundry machine, the hot water is disposed into the sewer system. For modern homes in The Netherlands this is 30-50 % of the total heat loss. Heat recovery from sewer systems may therefore be an interesting option to reduce water use related energy. In this study a model was developed to …

CO2 storage in geological formations is a promising technology under debate for reducing carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere. Numerical simulation can help assessing the feasibility of this technology if real geological systems can be analyzed numerically. To this purpose, extremely high computational power is necessary to approach reality. In this work, a parallel computing technique is presented for the numerical simulation of two-phase flow processes in porous media for large scale applications of CO2 storage. The Galerkin finite element method is used to solve the initial boundary value problem arising from the underlying mathematical model. The PETSc package is …

Hydrometeorological data is exiguous in developing countries due to the exorbitant price of actual weather monitoring systems acquisition and communication infrastructure built mostly in developed countries. Another impediment to large scale data collection in developed countries is the lack or limited local resources to ensure the maintenance of stations equipments. However, recent advanced progresses made in information and communication technologies have paved the way to access to a large set of free software and low-cost and low-power hardware to sense and monitor the environment. Many researchers and practitioners have grasped the opportunities offered by those technological advances, but, have applied …

Development Of A Stormwater Low Impact Development Planning Tool For The Province Of Ontario, Canada, James Li, Zhi Zheng
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Stormwater low impact development practices (LID) are lot-level measures which reduce runoff from lots and roads. Although there are many LID planning tools available (ranging from watershed, city, and site levels), it is not easy to find one that is appropriate for development of a LID site plan in Ontario. In particular, the Province of Ontario’s LID performance requirements are based on long-term average annual runoff and pollutant loading reduction. After a review of 16 LID planning tools in North America, it was found that 70% of these tools are site or city level and outputs from these tools include …

The world is experiencing a countless number of impressive and devastating floods causing a range of health impacts and risks with hundreds of thousands of people losing their lives or becoming homeless in a matter of hours. EU Floods Directive requires the developing of flood hazard maps, which may include information on hydrological and hydrodynamics characteristics of vulnerable regions, i.e. inundated areas and river flow discharges. Prediction of flood events can accurately be achieved by applying mathematical modelling for describing rainfall-runoff phenomena as well as surface waters hydrodynamics. Moreover, reservoirs can be properly operated in order to minimize flood events …

Temporal and spatial variability of rainfalls have a significant impact on the operation of urban drainage systems. Stormwater retention reservoirs are particularly sensitive to these variations. This paper presents the results of research on the impact of the direction and speed of rainfall movement over an urban catchment (of total area 560ha) on required volume of the retention reservoir. Calibrated hydrodynamic model has been used to simulate rainstorms movement (software: SWMM5). The whole catchment was divided into sectors of 600´600m, which facilitated the calculation of time shift between sectors for assumed speeds of rainfall movement (vop= 2, 5 and 10 …

Most rivers in Taiwan are suffered from serious sedimentation problems due to extreme weather in recent years. In order to decrease sediment trap in Shihmen Reservoir, the reservoir sediment was effluent into downstream river during flood period. The river sediment deposition and erosion would be thus more violent. The quasi-two dimensional model, NETSTARS, was applied to investigate hydraulic characteristics and corresponding river sedimentation behavior in Da-Han basin. The model was calibrated and verified with field survey data and then was utilized to predict the spatial and temporal variations of downstream suspended solid concentration. Through investigating the change of suspended solid …
