Temperature Dynamics Investigation At Small And Shallow Lakes Using Hydrodynamic Model, Ali Abbasi, Nick Van De Giesen
Temperature Dynamics Investigation At Small And Shallow Lakes Using Hydrodynamic Model, Ali Abbasi, Nick Van De Giesen
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A three-dimensional time-dependent hydrodynamic and heat transport model of Lake Binaba, a shallow and small dam reservoir in Ghana, emphasizing the simulation of dynamics and thermal structure has been developed. Most numerical studies of temperature dynamics in reservoirs are based on one- or two-dimensional models. These models are not applicable for reservoirs characterized with complex flow pattern and unsteady heat exchange between the atmosphere and water surface. Continuity, momentum and temperature transport equations have been solved. Proper assignment of boundary conditions, especially surface heat fluxes, has been found crucial in simulating the lake’s hydrothermal dynamics. This model is based on …
Change In Depletion Curve Under Projected Climatic Scenarios For A Snow Covered Catchment In Arunachal Himalaya (India), Arnab Bandyopadhyay, Aditi Bhadra, Tobom Rukbo, Sanayanbi Hodam
Change In Depletion Curve Under Projected Climatic Scenarios For A Snow Covered Catchment In Arunachal Himalaya (India), Arnab Bandyopadhyay, Aditi Bhadra, Tobom Rukbo, Sanayanbi Hodam
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Snow cover depletion curve (SDC) is very much required for snowmelt runoff modeling in any snow-dominated catchment. The present study deals with the change in depletion curve of snow covered Nuranang river basin of Arunachal Pradesh under A1B, A2 (High carbon emission), B1 (Low carbon emission) and IPCC commitment projected climatic scenarios. Snow covered area (SCA) percentages were determined by using NDSI model. The temperature change under different scenarios shows that A1B climatic scenario has the highest incremental temperature change. Under IPCC commitment scenario, as the temperature and precipitation are expected to be restored to present condition after some years, …

Improvement Of The National Flood Early Warning System In Norway – Flood Level Warnings And Uncertainties, Péter Borsányi, Byman Hamududu, Sivachandran Navaratnam, Elin Langsholt
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This work describes the methods and procedures applied to improve the national flood warning system in Norway by including water level forecasts at non-gauged but important locations and information on the corresponding uncertainty. In this approach, only a subset of model variables (inputs) and parameters are treated as uncertain. It is found that visualization of the forecasts is challenging, and therefore a number of experimental solutions are discussed.
On The Added Value Of Radar Data In Hydrological Modelling And Flood Forecasting, Niels Van Steenbergen, Patrick Willems
On The Added Value Of Radar Data In Hydrological Modelling And Flood Forecasting, Niels Van Steenbergen, Patrick Willems
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Good quality rainfall data are essential in hydrological modelling and flood forecasting. Classically, rain gauge data are being used as rainfall input for hydrological modelling, but they only provide point information. Because rainfall can be highly variable in space, radar images can provide important additional spatial information, but the quantitative rainfall data quality of these images is often limited. Merging techniques between rain gauge and radar data can provide a solution to this problem. In this research, a simple kriging merging technique, making use of two C-band radars, is tested for the Demer catchment in Belgium. Three periods with different …
Analysis Of Combined Effects Of Input Uncertainty And Parameter Uncertainty In Hydrological Modelling, Qiang Dai, Dawei Han, Miguel A. Rico-Ramirez
Analysis Of Combined Effects Of Input Uncertainty And Parameter Uncertainty In Hydrological Modelling, Qiang Dai, Dawei Han, Miguel A. Rico-Ramirez
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Uncertainty of a hydrological model mainly stems from a lack of understanding and knowledge about the real hydrological process. Input uncertainty and parameter uncertainty are considered to be the two major uncertainty sources of hydrological model. Until now, enormous studies have aimed at calibrating model parameters and estimating model uncertainty. However, these studies mainly ascribe the model output uncertainty to the unknown non-physical parameters. In fact, rainfall, especially of weather radar rainfall, is widely recognized as a main error source. There are seldom studies that aim to explicitly describe model input and parameter uncertainty simultaneously. For this reason, in this …
Combined Vertical And Lateral Channel Evolution Numerical Modeling, Yong G. Lai, Kuowei Wu
Combined Vertical And Lateral Channel Evolution Numerical Modeling, Yong G. Lai, Kuowei Wu
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Vertical stream bed erosion has been studied routinely and its modeling is getting widespread acceptance. The same cannot be said with lateral stream bank erosion since its measurement or numerical modeling is very challenging. Bank erosion, however, can be important to channel morphology. It may contribute significantly to the overall sediment budget of a stream, is a leading cause of channel migration, and is the cause of major channel maintenance. However, combined vertical and lateral channel evolution is seldom addressed. In this study, a new geofluival numerical model is developed to simulate combined vertical and lateral channel evolution. Vertical erosion …
A Management Indicator Program For Water Operating Agencies, Martha Patricia Hansen Rodríguez, Víctor Hugo Alcocer Yamanaka, Yenni Laurel Varela
A Management Indicator Program For Water Operating Agencies, Martha Patricia Hansen Rodríguez, Víctor Hugo Alcocer Yamanaka, Yenni Laurel Varela
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The management indicator program for operating agencies (PIGOO, for its initials in Spanish) specifies a set of 28 management indicators that help to measure the operational aspects, financial aspects and efficiencies of potable water supply systems. Ideally, the performance indicators of an operating agency should be linked to an objective or strategy established by that same agency. The performance indicators are calculated based on annual data, variables such as the volume of water produced, the number of employees, total income and expenditures, rate of leaks and claims. The Mexican Institute of Water Technology has conducted PIGOO since 2005. From 2005 …

A Services' Frameworks And Support Services For Environmental Information Communities, Nicholas J. Car, Matthew Paul Stenson, Simon J. D. Cox, Robert A. Atkinson, Peter Fitch
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
For environmental datasets to be used effectively via the Internet, they must present standardized data and metadata services and link the two. The Open Geospatial Consortium's (OGC) web services (WFS, WMS, CSW etc.), have seen widespread use over many years however few organizations have deployed information architectures based solely on OGC standards for all their datasets. Collections of organizations within a thematically-based community certainly cannot realistically be expected to do so. To enable service use flexibility we present a services framework - a Data Brokering Layer (DBL). A DBL presents access to data and metadata services for datasets, and links …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics
With the recent advances in measurement and information technology, there is an abundance of data available for analysis and modelling of hydrodynamic systems. With increasing spatial and temporal data coverage, better quality and reliability of data modelling and data driven techniques are becoming more favorable and acceptable to the hydrodynamic community. The data model integration tools and techniques are being applied in variety of hydroinformatics applications ranging from simple data mining for pattern discovery to data driven models and numerical model error correction. The present study explores the possibility of employing “genetic programming” (GP) as an offline data driven modelling …
Uncertainty Characterization Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model By Using Grey Numbers, Stefano Alvisi, Anna Bernini, Marco Franchini
Uncertainty Characterization Of A Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff Model By Using Grey Numbers, Stefano Alvisi, Anna Bernini, Marco Franchini
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
A procedure for characterizing global uncertainty of a rainfall-runoff simulation model based on using grey numbers is presented. By using the grey numbers technique the uncertainty is characterized by an interval; once the parameters of the rainfall-runoff model have been properly defined as grey numbers, by using the grey mathematics and functions it is possible to obtain simulated discharges in the form of grey numbers whose envelope defines a band which represents the vagueness/uncertainty associated with the simulated variable. The grey numbers representing the model parameters are estimated in such a way that the band obtained from the envelope of …

A Hybrid Piecewise-Linear/Newton Approach To Solve Multi-Period Production And Distribution Planning Problems In Large Water Supply Networks, Derek Verleye, El-Houssaine Aghezzaf
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Efficient production and distribution planning of water is a challenging problem that many drinking water companies face. The development of effective tools to optimally supply this vital resource is therefore essential. Nowadays, many drinking water companies rely on simulation software packages (EPANET, InfoWorks) for the daily operation of their network. This software allows the user to make accurate and thus reliable simulations of the network for a chosen configuration. However, the user-defined scenario’s do not consider the lowest operating costs. Very often the pumps are working at a suboptimal point in their system curve and water production centers are not …

A Provenance Methodology And Architecture For Scientific Projects Containing Automated And Manual Processes, Nicholas J. Car, Matthew Paul Stenson, Michael Hartcher
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The management of provenance metadata is a pressing issue for high profile, complex, science projects needing to trace their data products’ lineage in order to withstand scrutiny. To represent, capture, transfer, store and deliver provenance data from a project’s processes, specialized metadata, new IT system components and the human and automated procedures are necessary. The collection of metadata, components and procedures can be termed a provenance methodolo-gy and architecture. Through our involvement with several large Australian science projects ([4], [5], [6], [7], [11]), we have developed a methodology that provides: Use Case assessments of project clients’ requirements for provenance; team …

Decision Tree Classification Model In Water Supply Network, Sun Jilong, Wang Ronghe, Ping Junhui, Cai Liang, Xiao Chaohong
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
With the service life of water supply network (WSN) growth, the growing phenomenon of aging pipe network has become exceedingly serious. As urban water supply network is hidden underground asset, it is difficult for monitoring staff to make a direct classification towards the faults of pipe network by means of the modern detecting technology. In this paper, based on the basic property data (e.g. diameter, material, pressure, distance to pump, distance to tank, load, etc.) of water supply network, decision tree algorithm (C4.5) has been carried out to classify the specific situation of water supply pipeline. Part of the historical …

Real-Time Runoff Prediction Based On Data Assimilation And Model Bias Reduction, Nemanja Branisavljevic, Christopher Hutton, Zoran Kapelan, Lydia Vamvakeridou-Lyroudia, Dragan A. Savić
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The conceptual nature of rain-runoff models causes a significant drawback in the form of model bias. In certain types of applications, like real-time prediction, the model bias is directly mapped to the prediction result. The methodologies that are developed to improve real-time prediction, like data assimilation or real-time model calibration are taking the advantage of the information in the form of measured real-time data, but does not face the problem of model inaccuracy. In this paper the method based on data assimilation that is capable of detecting and reducing model bias (hence leading to more accurate real-time predictions) is proposed. …
Developing An Integrated Modelling System For Blue-Green Solutions, Christos Makropoulos, Evangelos Rozos, Cedo Maksimovic
Developing An Integrated Modelling System For Blue-Green Solutions, Christos Makropoulos, Evangelos Rozos, Cedo Maksimovic
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Blue-green interventions represent the next level of integration for sustainable cities: that of an integrated urban water and urban green design, operation and management. The key concept is that a more holistic approach would present a win-win scenario, in which urban green would be utilized as infrastructure for water services (e.g. mitigating urban floods) while urban water infrastructure would be used as a source of irrigation for urban green, increasing their performance in a range of services including amenities, reducing heat island effects and increasing ecosystem services. However, this focus on integration brings into sharp relief another need: that of …

Precipitation Forecasting With Wavelet-Based Empirical Orthogonal Function And Artificial Neural Network (Weof-Ann) Model, Sanaz Imen, Ni-Bin Chang, Y. Jeffrey Yang
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Western drought began since 2000 caused sharp decrease by about 100 feet in the largest reservoir of North America, Lake Mead due to the precipitation pattern shift in the upstream lower Virgin River Basin. Oceans play an important role on earth’s climate via oceanic-atmospheric interactions known as climate teleconnections, which deeply affect the terrestrial precipitation patterns. This issue signifies the necessity of developing a modern hydroinformatics tool - precipitation forecasting model - to account for teleconnection signals from climate change and mitigate drought hazards impact on lake water, quantitatively and qualitatively, which cannot be achieved by using traditional Global Circulation …
Computationally Efficient Lumped Floodplain Modelling Using Data-Driven Methods, Vincent Wolfs, Patrick Willems
Computationally Efficient Lumped Floodplain Modelling Using Data-Driven Methods, Vincent Wolfs, Patrick Willems
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Modelling floodplains adequately is crucial for numerous water management applications. Many of these applications require a large number of simulations or long term analyses, such as optimization problems at catchment scale, uncertainty analyses or real time control of hydraulic structures to prevent flooding. Therefore, models with a limited calculation time are necessary. Various computationally efficient models exist that describe the flow in rivers, but the modelling of floodplains is often overlooked. This study focuses on the computationally efficient lumped modelling of floodplains. Two different data-driven modelling approaches are proposed that predict the inundation level in the floodplain and the flow …
Optimal Placement Of Metering Devices For Multiple Purposes, Ramon Perez, Gerard Sanz, Josep Cuguero, Miquel Angel Cuguero
Optimal Placement Of Metering Devices For Multiple Purposes, Ramon Perez, Gerard Sanz, Josep Cuguero, Miquel Angel Cuguero
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Monitoring devices installed in a huge system like a water network imply a high cost. This cost includes installation and maintenance. Thus the placement of these devices must be optimal. The optimal sensor placement is an issue that comes up in many innovation projects in water networks. The use of models even if the final application does not use them may be crucial in such process. Nevertheless the optimality of the placement may depend highly on the final use of these sensors. In general a better placement may imply a more specific use of the information. This work studies the …

Lessons Learned In Solving The Contaminant Source Identification In An Online Context, Hervé Ung, Olivier A. Piller, Deuerlein Jochen, Denis Gilbert, Montalvo Idel
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Protection of Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) against contamination events has a paramount importance. Either deliberate or accidental contamination of these infrastructures has strong negative consequences from both social and economical point of view. The project SMaRT-OnlineWDN aimed to develop methods and software solutions 1) to detect contamination from non-specific sensors, 2) to maintain an online water quantity and water quality model that is reliable and 3) to use the past model predictions to backtrack the potential sources of contaminations. For source identification, is more reliable velocities from an historical data base a substantial advantage compared to offline velocity predictions? The …

Towards A Decision Support System For Consequence Analysis Of Flooding On Critical Infrastructure, Andreas Burzel, Micheline Hounjet, Bernhard P.J. Becker, Antonio Di Pietro, Maurizio Pollino, Vittorio Rosato, Alberto Tofani
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The flooding of the rivers Danube and Elbe caused: dozens of deaths; damaged bridges, streets, dams, railway lines and houses; outages of electrical power, drinking water supply, fixed and mobile telecommunication, water level gauges and purification plants; and crop shortfall. The analysis of the events and emergency response actions exposed flaws in preparedness and the understanding of emergency responders of the need to protect critical infrastructure. For instance, water level gauges failed, flood models for extreme amounts of water were flawed, emergency call numbers became unreachable and first responders could not communicate. As a consequence, protection and evacuation measures could …

Numerical Modeling Of The Fecal Bacteria Transport Processes In Sediment-Laden Flow, Guoxian Huang, Roger Falconer, Binliang Lin
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Many experiments, field measurements and few numerical tests shows the transport and fate of Faecal Bacteria have a tight relationship of the sediment transport including the absorbing, releasing and changing the radiation of sunshine especially in the fine cohesive particles and etc. The nonuniform distribution of 2-D and 3-D structures of hydrodynamic, salinity and suspended sediment (SS) in the riverine and estuary may make the solution of Faecal Bacteria to become more complex. With related measured data, the different coupling models based on modified EFDC 2D model are built to solve the dynamic processes of Faecal Bacteria and decouple the …

Study Of Wave-Induced Scour Depth Around Group Of Piles Using Support Vector Machines, Samaneh Ghazanfari Hashemi, Tetsuya Hiraishi, Amir Reza Mansoori
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Various arrangements of pile groups are widely being used as supports of marine structures. As piles are located on erodible beds of the sea, scouring is a threat to such structures and the scour depth amounts should be considered well in their designs. Though most of these supports are constructed in form of groups of piles, majority of studies were concentrated on predictions of scouring around single piles whereas the arrangement of the piles and the spaces between them in arrangements as well as their geometry, sediment and wave characteristics should also be studied. Despite the importance of the scour …
Effect Of Different Hydrological Model Structures On The Assimilation Of Distributed Uncertain Observations, Maurizio Mazzoleni, Leonardo Alfonso, Dimitri P. Solomatine
Effect Of Different Hydrological Model Structures On The Assimilation Of Distributed Uncertain Observations, Maurizio Mazzoleni, Leonardo Alfonso, Dimitri P. Solomatine
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The reliable evaluation of the flood forecasting is a crucial problem for assessing flood risk and consequent damages. Different hydrological models (distributed, semi-distributed or lumped) have been proposed in order to deal with this issue. The choice of the proper model structure has been investigated by many authors and it is one of the main sources of uncertainty for a correct evaluation of the outflow hydrograph. In addition, the recent increasing of data availability makes possible to update hydrological models as response of real-time observations. For these reasons, the aim of this work it is to evaluate the effect of …

Although the contamination of the organic pollutants had been reported to occur in the Yellow River basin, few studies had been done on the source water contamination and health risk of Yellow River basin. To understand the typical organic pollutant contamination status of the main source water in Yellow River basin, samples were collected from fifty source water points (including reservoir and river) in Yellow River basin. The samples were analyzed for the representative organic pollutants, including Benzene homology, Chlorobenzene compounds, organophosphorous pesticides, and Nitrobenzene compounds, total 17 compounds. It was observed that the concentrations of the 17 compounds in …

Leakage Detection And Localization Method Based On A Hybrid Inverse/Direct Modelling Approach Suitable For Handling Multiple-Leak Scenarios, Jordi Meseguer, Josep M. Mirats, Gabriela Cembrano, Vicenç Puig, Eduard Bonada
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
When an accurate hydraulic network model is available, direct modeling techniques are very straightforward and reliable for on-line leakage detection and localization applied to large class of water distribution networks. In general, this type of techniques based on analytical models can be seen as an application of the well-known fault detection and isolation theory for complex industrial systems. Nonetheless, the assumption of single leak scenarios is usually made considering a certain leak size pattern which may not hold in real applications. Upgrading a leak detection and localization method based on a direct modeling approach to handle multiple-leak scenarios can be, …

A Decision Support System For Identifying Real Losses In Water Distribution Networks, Gabriele Freni, Vincenza Notaro, Chiara Maria Fontanazza, Barbara Milici, Valeria Puleo, Mauro De Marchis
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The investigation of real losses is of paramount importance for water utility willing to control operational costs and environmental and social impacts of water supply. Real losses reduction could be achieved by continuous maintenance actions and occasional pipe substitutions. Maintenance activities in the distribution network represent one of the largest items in a water utility economic balance and, therefore, any approach aimed at maintenance optimization catches the interest of water managers. These strategies are constrained by the amount of funds, which are usually available not in a single instalment but yearly and spread over a time period of several years. …

In Korea repeatedly experiences floods and droughts that cause traumatic environmental conditions with huge economic impact. With an approach and solution such as Smart Water Grid these problems can be alleviated. Tapping into the retention ponds behind dams, rainfall harvest facilities in urban areas and any other structures installed to store rainfall water during flood events will mitigate the damage of flooding and provide a new source of national water resources. Similarly, purified waste water, ground water and desalinated sea water can also feasible to use as alternative water resources. In this study, the water balance assessment model is being …

Precipitation Sensor Network Optimal Design Using Time-Space Varying Correlation Structure, Juan Carlos Chacon-Hurtado, Leonardo Alfonso, Dimitri P. Solomatine
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Design of optimal precipitation sensor networks is a common topic in hydrological literature, however this is still an open problem due to lack of understanding of some spatially variable processes, and assumptions that often cannot be verified. Among these assumptions lies the homoscedasticity of precipitation fields, common in hydrological practice. To overcome this, it is proposed a local intensity-variant covariance structure, which in the broad extent, provides a fully updated correlation structure as long as new data are coming into the system. These considerations of intensity-variant correlation structure will be tested in the design of a precipitation sensor network for …
