Objective Most of the mining areas in China have entered the deep mining stage. In this case, the risks of mine water inrushes increase significantly due to the complex deep hydrogeological conditions, a significant increase in the number of hidden disaster-causing factors, and the existence of faults. Objective Lithology identification lays the foundation for fine-scale reservoir evaluation. However, traditional identification methods generally utilize the interactive relationships between only 2‒3 logging parameters, suffering from low utilization rates of logging information and low identification accuracy for strata with small differences in logging responses. Objective In coal mines, the uneven distribution of dust haze and complex illumination conditions caused by underground coal mining and dust removal lead to blurred video images, as well as the loss of information and details. Hence, this study proposed a dehazing and enhancement algorithm for heterogeneous images of underground mining environments. Objective and Methods This study introduces the adjustments for coalbed methane (CBM) production in the Yanchuannan CBM field‒the first deep CBM field in China. Deep CBM production in this CBM field faces challenges including strong heterogeneity of reservoirs, single arrangement mode of production well patterns, low applicability of conventional hydraulic fracturing, excessively long conventional production cycles, and a high proportion of inefficient wells. Objective Given the inaccurate and low-efficiency manual statistics of the quantity of coals flushed out during borehole hydraulic flushing, this study proposed an intelligent identification method that combines YOLOv8n, ResNet34, and PP-OCRv4 algorithms. Methods First, the first-level detection was completed using the YOLOv8n algorithm, which, combined with the ResNet34 and PP-OCRv4 algorithms via parallel cascade, was then employed to conduct second-level processing. The spatiotemporal variation of vegetation cover in the mining areas of YSR Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques. By focusing on the years 2014, 2018, and 2023, the analysis provides insights into changes observed in water bodies, bare soil, sparse vegetation, moderate vegetation, and dense vegetation. The results reveal dynamic trends in land cover categories, highlighting the environmental impact of mining activities in the region. A significant decline in water bodies is observed, with the area reducing from 3.48 km2 in 2014 to 1.91km2 in 2023. This decrease raises concerns about the potential degradation …

Assessing The Perception Gap: Mining Impacts From Community And Company Perspectives In Nigeria, Ikechukwu Mbachu

The study intends to evaluate how mining companies and their host communities perceive the impacts of mining operations and to ascertain if there are significant differences in how both parties perceive the impacts of mining in Nigeria. The study was carried out in twelve states in Nigeria and covered the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. Data was collected through a questionnaire and interviews carried out separately with community members and company representatives. Since their inception, the deep mines have faced the challenges of spontaneous heating and fire. The study examines the impact of coal seam depth and particle size on the spontaneous combustion of coal. A spontaneous heating study of seven coal samples shows moisture, volatile matter, and ash do not exhibit any clear trend except for fixed carbon, which shows a direct relationship. However, crossing point temperature (CPT) and thermo-gravimetric (TGignition) temperature reveal an inverse relationship between spontaneous combustion and the depth of the coal seam. Five size ranges: < 106, 106–212, 212–425, 425–2000, and 0–212 µm are studied, which displayed an increase in mean specific surface area (SSA) by 87% and a decrease in …

Lithium is utilized in various industries, especially currently Lithium-ion batteries are employed in electric vehicles and portable electronic devices as an energy source, in pharmaceutical industries, aerospace applications, glass and ceramics production, lubricants and greases, air purification systems, nuclear power, and aluminum production. The Kenticha pegmatite ore deposit in Ethiopia holds potential, and this study analyzed the mineralization of Kenticha spodumene ore and assessed its suitability for beneficiation by employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), and petrographic microscope analysis. The study aims to evaluate the potential contribution of coal production for electric power generation in Brazil to greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, applying life cycle assessment (LCA). The product system studied consists of mining, transportation of the coal to the power station, and power generation. The LCA was first developed only for coal mining in Brazil. Previous investigations in the target area primarily focused on ore genesis or the geological formations of the ore deposit, neglecting the specific beneficiation aspects associated with the ore. Due to gaps with respect to beneficiation aspects,the research aimed to determine the liberation size of the target iron-bearing ore mineral through mineralogical identification, chemical composition analysis, and examination of the particle size distribution. In this study, various methods were employed, including atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), X-ray fluorescence (X-RF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and sieve analysis. Mine fires and other hazards caused by spontaneous coal combustion are a pervasive and longstanding issue in Jharia coalfields, India. This study proposes a novel approach to classify coal seams based on their propensity to spontaneous combustion using the intrinsic properties of 30 coal samples from different seams. This method eliminates the need for expensive and time-consuming experimental determinations of susceptibility indices (SI) such as crossing point temperature (CPT), critical air blast (CAB), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The Stability Graph is a widely used tool for the design of open stopes in underground mining. Many users of the Stability Graph still apply this design method manually. Although the manual approach has benefits, using multiple graphs and stability number computation charts for each stope surface is time-consuming, even for the experienced mining engineer. This paper explores the long-term economic benefits of high-speed rail, including its impact on land value, business expansion, and carbon emissions.
