A Method For Intelligent Information Extraction Of Coal Fractures Based On Μct And Deep Learning, Hu Zhazha, Zhang Xun, Jin Yi, Gong Linxian, Huang Wenhui, Ren Jianji, Norbert Klitzsch

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective The fine-scale characterization of fractures in coal reservoirs is significant for the exploration and exploitation of coalbed methane (CBM) resources. Given that the size, orientation, and density of fractures directly affect the permeability of coal seams, the accurate information identification and extraction of fractures in coal seams plays a key role in revealing the formation and propagation mechanisms of fracture networks during reservoir volume fracturing. Conventional methods for fracture information extraction typically rely on manual labeling and feature extraction based on image processing techniques, exhibiting significantly limited accuracy and efficiency. Methods This study proposed a method for fracture information …

Theories, Technologies, And Prospects For The Utilization Of Deep Underground Storage Space, Wei Hengfei, Fang Jie, Shi Junjie, Li Qiuyuan, Yu Beibei, Chen Jing

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background The world's energy utilization has shifted from high-carbon, high-polluting, non-renewable energy to low-carbon, clean, renewable energy. In this process, the utilization of low-carbon, clean energy typified by natural gas, wind power, solar energy, and hydrogen energy needs to be coupled with deep underground storage space (DUSS) to offset their regional constraints and instability. Additionally, low- and zero-carbon technologies like carbon dioxide (CO2) geological storage also rely on DUSS. Therefore, investigating the theories, technologies, and prospects of DUSS utilization under the low-carbon background will provide significant guidance for efficient DUSS utilization in China. Methods Based on the investigation …

Migration Characteristics And Storage Forms Of Liquid And Supercritical Co2 In Saline Aquifers, Peng Xiyi, Wang Yanyong, Li Song, Wang Xiaoguang, Cui Guodong, He Yongming

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective CO2 storage in saline aquifers serves as a critical technology used to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Owing to the low-temperature marine environment and the pressure from overlying seawater, shallow offshore saline aquifers exhibit significantly different temperature and pressure conditions compared to onshore saline aquifers at equivalent burial depths, allowing CO2 to occur in a liquid state. Compared to supercritical CO2, liquid CO2 features higher density, viscosity, and solubility in formation water, which affect the CO2 migration and storage processes. Previous studies focus primarily on supercritical CO2, lacking a deep understanding …

Frequency-Domain Induced Polarization Responses Of Water-Bearing Anomalous Bodies In The Roadway Tunneling Direction In Coal Mines, Hu Xiongwu, Hu Yuanrong, Wu Rongxin, Yu Hao

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective A frequency-domain induced polarization (FDIP) method enables the observation of critical electrical parameters such as frequency dispersivity and complex resistivity of geological bodies, mitigating the multiplicity of solutions in the interpretations of electrical anomalies. This method has emerged as a primary technique for electric method-based advance water detection during roadway tunneling in coal mines. However, the FDIP method primarily focuses on data observation in the direction opposite to roadway tunneling, exhibiting a limited capacity to capture geoelectric information in the roadway tunneling direction. This leads to practical challenges such as unclear orientations of water-bearing anomalous bodies. Therefore, exploring the …

Utilizing Convolutional Autoencoders For Anomaly Detection And Drill Bit Damage Assessment In Rotary Percussion Drilling, Lesego Senjoba, Hajime Ikeda, Hisatoshi Toriya, Tsuyoshi Adachi, Youhei Kawamura

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Monitoring drill bit wear during drilling improves operational efficiency. Wear in drill bits is influenced by factors related to drilling parameters and rock properties and can be categorized into types based on the cause of failure. Several studies have used machine learning to detect drill bit wear, mainly using classification models. However, these models require an extensive amount of data that includes different possible drill bit failures. This presents a challenge as acquiring data is difficult due to the scarcity of anomalies. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing convolutional autoencoders (CAE) for both anomaly detection and drill bit damage …

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Predicting and controlling ground vibrations from blasting is crucial for protecting structures and minimizing environmental impacts. This study investigates how explosive quantity and scaled distances affect peak particle velocity and establishes empirical equations to estimate this velocity at different distances from the blast area. The study found that the maximum charge per delay at a peak particle velocity of 10 mm/s was reduced to 13.46% as the delay timing was increased from 0 to 25 ms and 9.99% from 0 to 50 ms delay timing. The reduction of maximum charge with increasing delay timing leads to the reduction of ground …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

With the expanding use of polymers in additive manufacturing, sustainable resins for use in vat photopolymerization are required to reduce their environmental impact. One promising approach to achieve this is to incorporate biobased fillers that replace the acrylates in photopolymer resins as ‘green’ alternatives. In this study, photopolymer composites consisting of a methacrylate resin with varying calcium carbonate powder content between 0 and 50 wt.% were investigated. A digital light processing technique was used to fabricate tensile test specimens for mechanical testing. Good printability, dimensional accuracy, and good interlayer adhesion were observed for composite resin formulations that incorporated calcium carbonate …

A Key Technology For Synergistic Backfilling Of Coal-Based Solid Waste And High-Salinity Wastewater, Dong Shuning, Yu Shujiang, Dong Xingling, Zhang Buqin, Guo Xiaoming, Wang Xiaodong, Wang Kai, Zhu Shibin, Wu Boqiang, Liu Lei

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background and Objective Limited by locations, as well as economic and technical levels, most of the coal-based solid waste is still accumulated in the form of open-air landfills without treatment, thus occupying large quantities of land resources and causing secondary pollution to the environment. The proper treatment and reduction of high-salinity wastewater (e.g., high-salinity mine water and high-salinity water from the coal chemical industry) represent a key link in the achievement of zero liquid discharge. However, existing technologies for high-salinity wastewater treatment are generally confronted with issues such as great initial investment and high operation costs of the treatment engineering. …
