Environmental Disturbance And The Distribution Of Rhinichthys Bowersi In West Virginia, Brooke Elizabeth Schlenker

The Cheat minnow, Rhinichthys bowersi, has been designated a species of concern by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Mitochondrial DNA analysis (Gladwell 2002) supports the origin of R. bowersi from hybridization between cyprinids R. cataractae and Nocomis micropogon. Previous investigators have hypothesized a relationship between fish hybridization and environmental disturbance. The habitat of R. bowersi has experienced severe environmental degradation from mineral and timber extraction. In this study, environmental quality was compared between stream systems in which parental species of R. bowersi were found with and without resulting hybridization. In July 2003, the School of Natural Resource Sciences was merged with the Conservation and Survey Division and the Water Center Nebraska State Survey. This merger produced the School of Natural Resources (hereafter referred to as the "School") in its current form. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln requested a ten-year review of the School's programs and activities. The review was administered by the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) in cooperation with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Agriculture, and the School.

Agricultural stakeholder involvement is central to the National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) National Research Council (NRC)(2002) recommendation for development and implementation of adaptive, ecosystem management principles, as well as the definition of a new management regime for the Missouri River. This document represents a pilot study of fifteen agricultural producers in three counties, Atchison County, Missouri, Fremont County, Iowa, and Otoe County, Nebraska, who were contacted via telephone and completed structured interviews. Agroecosystems in the U.S. are beset with social, ecological and environmental problems as large industrial farming methods are edging out small family-sized farms and replacing ecological services provided by biodiversity with synthetic inputs and practices. While many of the benefits of smaller diversified or integrated farming systems are well known, farm producers need a concrete model that shows how integration is possible and with what crops. The objective of this study was to investigate some of these supplemental farm activities, and identify and evaluate whether they were compatible given the time and resource constraints of a typical eastern Nebraska farm. …

Investigating Ground And Surface Water In The Republican River Basin Of Nebraska Using Water Chemistry And Environmental Isotopes, Jennifer J. Schellpeper

Recent legal battles concerning water use initiated an investigation of the stream/aquifer relationships in the Republican River Basin located in southwest Nebraska. Ground and surface water was analyzed for tritium, deuterium, ¹⁸O, and major ions. Temperature, pH, conductivity and alkalinity were determined on-site. Samples were collected during 1997 and 1998 from irrigation wells throughout the entire basin. Localized interactions between groundwater and surface water were examined during twenty-four hour pump tests performed on the irrigation wells screened in the alluvium along the river valley and its tributaries. These data show there are differences between the ground and surface waters …
