New Method And Optimization Research On Water Sealing Outside Casing Based On Water-Swelling Rubber For Stratified Pumping, Zheng Xianghua, Yuan Wei, Luo Yunxiang, Cheng Cong

Coal Geology & Exploration

Stratified pumping test is a key technique for hydrogeological exploration. To solve the problems of low efficiency and poor reliability and controllability of the traditional water-sealing methods outside casing for stratified pumping, a water-swelling rubber was developed based on high water absorption of the sodium polyacrylate resin, and a new approach based on water-swelling rubber was proposed and optimized by the response surface methodology in this paper. With the water swelling ratio of the rubber as response index, a surrogate model was constructed by the Box-Behnken experimental design to study the influence of different process parameters, working condition parameters, and …

Prevention And Control Technology Of Goaf Water Hazard In Unauthorized Mining Areas Of Extremely Soft And Medium-Thick Coal Seams, Li Zhi, Zheng Shitian, Shi Zhiyuan, Wang Yuhang

Coal Geology & Exploration

Unauthorized mining in coal pit is common in China's coal industry. As the scope of unauthorized mining and the amount of accumulated water are hard to determine, the goaf water seriously threatens the safety of mining in adjacent large coal mines. In order to explore the unauthorized boundary of coalpits quickly and accurately and prevent the threat of goaf water, the long distance drilling technology of ground bedding borehole in medium and thick coal seam is proposed based on the controllable trajectory and accurate positioning of ground directional drilling, which mainly includes precise drilling in extremely soft and medium-thick coal …

Plastic Recycling Is Inefficient And Expensive, Clark S. Adomaitis Dec 2021

Plastic Recycling Is Inefficient And Expensive, Clark S. Adomaitis

Capstones

Plastics production and incineration contributes more than 850 million metric tons to the emissions that are causing climate change. Emissions are growing at a moment when scientists and world leaders are in agreement that they need to dramatically decrease. Environmentalists say that plastic production makes up 4.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. New plastic plants opening in the U.S. do not line up with emission reduction goals.

At the end of plastics’ lives, a lot of what we’re putting into our recycling bins isn’t getting recycled. In fact, only 18% of trash from New York City homes is actually recycled. …

Predicting Power Using Time Series Analysis Of Power Generation And Consumption In Texas, Joshua Eysenbach, Bodie Franklin, Andrew J. Larsen, Joel Lindsey

SMU Data Science Review

Due to the recent power events in Texas, power forecasting has been brought national attention. Accurate demand forecasting is necessary to be sure that there is adequate power supply to meet consumer's needs. While Texas has a forecasting model created by the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), constant efforts are required to ensure that the model stays at the state-of-the-art and is producing the most reliable forecasts possible. This research seeks to provide improved short- and medium-term forecasting models, bringing in state-of-the-art deep learning models to compare to ERCOT’s forecasts. A model that is more accurate than ERCOT’s own …

Solar Generated Electricity: An Analysis Of What Sectors Are Most Affected By Renewable Portfolio Standards And Related Policies, Logan Knollenberg

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of this thesis is to analyze state-specific Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) to understand their design and spillover effect onto non-utility (commercial, residential, industrial) sectors. Past research has overlooked non-utility sectors, often focusing on overall renewable energy growth and electricity generation from a combined end-result perspective. Solar capacity and solar generated electricity data from 5 states are used to establish which non-utility sectors experienced the highest level of solar growth from RPSs and related policies between 2010 and 2019. An explanatory sequential design is utilized, where interrupted time series analyses and exploratory case studies are performed to analyze each …

Risk-Based Machine Learning Approaches For Probabilistic Transient Stability, Umair Shahzad Dec 2021

Risk-Based Machine Learning Approaches For Probabilistic Transient Stability, Umair Shahzad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Power systems are getting more complex than ever and are consequently operating close to their limit of stability. Moreover, with the increasing demand of renewable wind generation, and the requirement to maintain a secure power system, the importance of transient stability cannot be overestimated. Considering its significance in power system security, it is important to propose a different approach for enhancing the transient stability, considering uncertainties. Current deterministic industry practices of transient stability assessment ignore the probabilistic nature of variables (fault type, fault location, fault clearing time, etc.). These approaches typically provide a conservative criterion and can result in expensive …

A 60- Year Record Of The Demotechnic Index Of States, 1960-2019, Gavin James Kellough

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A country’s dependency on energy resources can be interpreted through the calculation of energy indices. The Demotechnic Index (DI) was used to determine the trajectory of energy efficiency of each state in the United States over the period 1960-2019. The DI serves as a measure of the energy intensity of states and a proxy for energy sustainability of each state. The DI is the ratio of total energy use to total metabolic energy demand of a population. Mathematically, DI = (E_T-E_M)/E_M E_T represents the total energy used (metabolic energy + technological energy in kilojoules annually, kJ/y), while EM represents the basic …

Gravity Field Changes During Deep Exploitation Of The Coal Longwall And Their Relation To Stress Distribution And Seismic Activity, Łukasz Kortas Nov 2021

Gravity Field Changes During Deep Exploitation Of The Coal Longwall And Their Relation To Stress Distribution And Seismic Activity, Łukasz Kortas

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Mining operations cause volumetric deformations within the rock mass and changes in its density, to which the gravimetric method is sensitive. These changes are particularly well seen in periodic measurements of the local gravity field. The paper analyses the relationship between the movement of a longwall in a coal seam and the change in the distribution of the gravity field in time and space observed on the ground surface. Relative gravimetric measurements were carried out in six series between 2018 and 2020; before the start of coal extraction, with the progress of the longwall and after the cessation of mining. …

Study Of The Relationship Of Tidal Changes In Gravity With The Time Of Mining Tremors In The Area Of The Mining Longwall In A Coal Mine – Case Study In Uscb, Poland, Sławomir Siwek

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Deep mining of coal deposits in Upper Silesia Coal Basin in Poland over several hundred years has led to disturbances in the natural state of equilibrium. As a result of changes in stress distribution, mass distribution (changes in gravity forces) and deformation of the rock mass, seismic tremors with energy reaching up to 10E+09J are generated. In this paper, the time of mining tremors occurrence is linked with changes in the gravitational load of the rock mass caused by litosphere tides, which are considered to be one of the factors leading to occurrence of natural seismic tremors. The analysis used …

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is currently deciding on the structure of the next net metering program, which will determine how customers who install solar panels (and battery storage) under this new program will be compensated for excess energy that they export to the grid, and the additional fees that these solar customers will have to pay. The major investor-owned utility (IOU) companies in the state and some legislators have argued that the current net metering programs are far too generous to the customers and that they create an inequity by favoring the wealthy and causing a cost shift …

Combined with the previous "Three Zones" model and "Four Zones" model, this paper makes a spatial comparative analysis to clarify the spatial relationship of the three zoning models. It discusses the scientific nature of the "New Four Zones" model in terms of the influence of mining on water level of the …
