The Natural Resources Law Center's 25th Anniversary Conference and Natural Resources Law Teachers 14th Biennial Institute provided an opportunity for some of the best natural resources lawyers to discuss future trends in the field. The conference focused on the larger, cross-cutting issues affecting natural resources policy. Initial discussions concerned the declining role of scientific resource management due to the increased inclusion of economic-cost benefit analysis and public participation in the decision-making process. Large dams in the United States have frequently been the targets of attacks by environmentalists who believe that the dams and the reservoirs they create are violations of wilderness. There are currently numerous proposals to dismantle some dams in order to restore river ecosystems to their pre-dam conditions, including Hetch Hetchy Reservoir’s O’ Shaunnessy Dam. Less attention has been paid to those dams and reservoirs that have arguably created protected areas that otherwise may have been subject to degradation from development. The Muskegon River Watershed Assembly (MRWA) in partnership with the Annis Water Resources Institute of Grand Valley State University (AWRI) was awarded funds for the Muskegon River Transition/Implementation 1 project (# 2003-0032). The grant period began on September 27, 2004 and was extended nine months until June 30th, 2007. The goals of this project were to update the Muskegon River Watershed Management Plan to meet the EPA’s newest requirements and reduce the negative impact that thermal pollution, excessive nutrients, and sediment have on the cold and warm water fisheries, as well as for other indigenous aquatic organisms of the Muskegon …

This document details my final decisions on the new management arrangements for the West Coast and Gascoyne commercial ‘wetline’ fisheries. The decisions that are set out in this document will form an important part of the holistic management package required to ensure the long-term sustainability of our demersal scalefish resources in the West Coast and Gascoyne bioregions. The new Management Plans will provide the framework within which commercial scalefish catches can be explicitly managed to sustainable levels and will promote greater commercial certainty and confidence for those operators who gain access to the fishery.

Four federal agencies manage seven million acres of federal lands in Southern Nevada. Increasing demands for use of these public lands has created the need for those agencies to form a unique interagency partnership and to work cooperatively in support of agency missions, protection of natural resources, and public service.

Trap surveys using Antillean-Z fish traps were carried out across a range of depths and habitat types in the gulfs of Shark Bay between 1998 and 2000. Objectives of the study were (i) to evaluate the efficiency of the fish traps in catching 0+ and 1+ pink snapper (Pagrus auratus), (ii) to investigate the distribution and abundance of juvenile pink snapper in both gulfs using trap surveys, (iii) to investigate the influence of environmental factors including habitat-type on the distribution of juvenile pink snapper and, (iv) to develop trap indices of 0+ relative abundance and assess their use for monitoring …

This draft strategy was developed by the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia, hereafter known as the “Department of Fisheries” which has responsibility for managing fish resources (within Territorial waters out to 12 nautical miles) on behalf of the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services (DoTARS), through the applied Fish Resources Management Act (FRMA) (WA)(CI) (the “Applied Act”). The Applied Act provides a legislative framework that allows for management arrangements to be developed specifically for Christmas Island. On Wednesday, April 11, the Wildlife Management Institute’s Board of Directors voted to allow WMI to chart a new and independent course for the future. It is a course that will enable the Institute to continue its important role in wildlife conservation. The Board action further allows WMI to seek necessary additional sources of support and new Board members in addition to four original members who will remain. This action also allows WMI to retain its nonprofit, corporation status.
