(First paragraph) The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) intends to unite elements of its National Coastal Assessment Program (NCA) with its Chesapeake Bay Probabilistic Benthic Monitoring (CBP-PBM) Program beginning in the summer of 2005. The primary motivations for this decision were two-fold. First, the probable reduction of federal grant support for the NCA Program after the summer of 2004 would require considerable restructuring of the of DEQ’s estuarine probabilistic monitoring to continue with a comprehensive program in the future. Second, the current CBP-PBM Program has not provided sufficient data for the assessment of minor tidal tributary segments using the …

Ground level ozone is an air pollutant that affects people of all ages and origins in many urban areas including the Las Vegas Valley. The purpose of this study is to examine the best strategy to minimize tropospheric ozone generation through using a system dynamics approach via LUTAQ is used to formulate a solution to the reduction of ozone in the Clark County non-attainment area. By increasing housing density, decreasing average distance per trip, and decrease average number of trips per person per day is the most effective strategies to improving ozone levels in Las Vegas Valley.

Erosion along the Las Vegas Wash (Wash) has increased steadily along with the rapidly increasing population. The focus of this study is to find out if there is a relationship between lower total suspended solids rate (TSS) and the construction of erosion control structures along the Wash. The study was conducted between 7/15/2003 and 11/29/2004.
The method was water sampling on 7 sites and the samples were analyzed at Southern Nevada Water Systems (SNWS) laboratory at Saddle Island in Boulder City. Additional water quality data was also collected using Quanta, a device measuring different parameters in water. In this study …

In the past year, North Attleboro High Schools’ environmental science class has been conducting an intense study of the Ten Mile River. The focus of our study is to find out detailed information regarding the biological, physical, and chemical state of the river.
The Ten Mile River is the main river within North Attleboro. It runs down to Narragansett Bay and flows through many other local towns. The river begins at Cargill Pond in Plainville and flows 23 miles through North Attleboro, Attleboro, Plainville, and Seekonk before going into Rhode Island.

Long Pond, due to changes in demographics over the past 20 years, is experiencing environmental stress from two sources. One is the documented presence of Eurasian Milfoil and the other is the increased population density with small lot size in areas immediately adjacent to the pond. It is believed that effluent from overtaxed septic systems is moving into the pond via subsurface flow. ARHS students completed a study of water quality in 2001. At that time they found fecal coliform counts of 215 colonies/100 ml at Clark Shores. The Lakeville Conservation Commission wanted to know whether conditions have improved. This …

Since a previous study dealt with the water quality of Loon Pond, this year’s study focused on the possible presence of invasive aquatic weeds. Lakeville, like other towns in Massachusetts, is having a difficult battle with Eurasian Milfoil. The Lakeville Conservation Commission wanted to know whether the weed had also invaded Loon Pond. The study found many indigenous species of aquatic weeds. There was no evidence of Eurasian Milfoil. Water quality was within acceptable limits for pH, DO, temperature, reactive phosphorus and nitrogen as nitrate. Any increases in monthly concentrations of RP and NO3 were explained by weather and …

Long Pond, due to changes in demographics over the past 20 years, is experiencing environmental stress from two sources. One is the documented presence of Eurasian Milfoil and the other is the increased population density with small lot size in areas immediately adjacent to the pond. Lakeville Conservation Commission has tested and found fecal coliform bacteria in private wells of residents on Long Pond. In 2001, ARHS students found fecal coliforms the water of the pond itself. This was a study of two sites along West Meadow Brook, located on the campus of Brockton High School. The river has been monitored by groups at BHS over the past four years and is known to be polluted. The purpose of the study completed this year was to continue monitoring the quality of the river and how it is being affected by its surroundings. The river is flanked by playing fields, including Marciano Stadium and Campanelli Stadium, on one side, and Brockton High’s main campus and parking lots on the other side. Long Pond, because of changes in demographics over the past 20 years, is experiencing environmental stress from the presence of Eurasian Milfoil. Two herbicides, Sonar and Diquat, were applied to water in the residential area of Long Pond known as Parkhurst in order to eradicate the milfoil. Shortly after this application a report was made of dead mussels floating on the north side of Assawampset Pond. Long Pond and Assawampset Pond are connected via Snake River. There is some speculation that there is also a connection via a culvert between Parkhurst and Assawampset Pond. The Lakeville Conservation Commission wanted to …

The 2005 Quequechan River Project has a couple of interesting subplots: The fecal coliform bacteria data, the increasing phosphorus levels, the leaf decomposition project, and the sewer overflow diversion project.
- We had no bacteria growth for the samples we collected this year. That could be a good thing resulting from the tunnel project diverting sewer overflow waters or it could just be because we had no rain before we sampled.
- Our biotic index indicated a severely impacted river (7.0). We collected mostly scuds from our site below the bridge. However, when we went with Olyssa Starry from the Urban Environmental …

The Indian Head River is a tributary of the North River which is part of the South Coastal Basin. The Drinkwater becomes the Indian Head River below Factory Pond on the Hanson/Hanover line. Upstream there are a number of businesses but from Factory Pond downstream, much of the river has a forested riparian zone. The Indian Head River flows through the towns of Hanson, Hanover, and Pembroke. Between the two study sites there is some white water including several small waterfalls.
This is the fourth year that Whitman-Hanson Regional Schools have investigated the Indian Head River. The High School studied …

South Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been the object of numerous investigations due to its large minority population and industrial history. Utilizing the case study approach, the area was examined as both an environmental justice community and home to an active Superfund site. Through legal analysis, historical research, environmental sampling, and government agency assessment, patterns emerged. The patterns provided a means for comparison with other communities in similar situations. The comparisons allowed for the formulation of several recommendations. The community's proximity to the heavily polluted Chattanooga Creek was a key component of the South Chattanooga case study. Chattanooga Creek flows through the …

An analysis of internal phosphorus loading in Spring Lake, MI was conducted during August 2006, eight months following an alum treatment. Sediment cores were removed from 4 sites (that had been sampled previously in 2003 and 2004) and incubated in the laboratory under aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions. Phosphorus flux from the sediments into the overlaying water column were measured over a 22-day period and compared to rates measured from sediment cores collected previously from these sites. Field measurements showed reduced soluble reactive and total phosphorus concentrations the summer following the alum application, but chlorophyll and irradiance …

In addition to the supply of water for agriculture, irrigation dams of south-western Australia are important systems for recreational activities, including fishing (Molony & Bird 2002, Molony et al. 2002a). Lake Navarino (the reservoir created by Waroona Dam, figures 1 and 2, approx. 115° 55 E 32° 51 S) is the first major public access reservoir south of the Perth Metropolitan Area and is an important component of the Recreational Marron (Cherax tenuimanus') Fishery (RMF) (Molony 2001a, 2002a, 2003a, Molony & Bird 2002, Beatty et al. 2003a). Even though urban infrastructure systems are important and are designed according to socioeconomic and environmental conditions that are very sensitive to climate, there have been few major integrated assessments of the impacts of climate change on metropolitan infrastructure systems and services and possible adaptations. An analysis of the Boston metro area found that adaptation actions taken before full climate-change impacts occur will result in fewer expected negative impacts to the region than waiting for major impacts to occur. Adaptation of infrastructure to climate change must also consider land use management, environmental and socioeconomic impacts, equity, and adaptation actors and institutions. …

The disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation in certain regions of the Bay, declines in the abundance of some commercially and recreationally important species, increases in the incidence of low dissolved oxygen events, changes in the Bay's food web, and other ecological problems have been related to the deteriorating water quality. A roaded catchment is one of the water harvesting structures known collectively as improved catchments. It has a broad 'V' shaped cross section and a surface cover of clay. It is used to increase run-off yield and divert water to farm dams.
