State Of Tampa Bay 1991-92, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (Tbrpc), Agency On Bay Management
Reports
Each year the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council's Agency on Bay Management develops a report on the condition of the Tampa Bay estuary to identify activities and actions that have taken place during the previous year. This is the sixth "State of Tampa Bay" prepared under adopted rules of the Agency. Since the Legislature now meets earlier in the calender year, this report contains activities in 1991 and 1992 to accommodate this timing change. The purpose of the "State of Tampa Bay" is to • serve as a reference for projects, programs and organizations that affect the bay and its watershed …

A Three-Dimensional Circulation Model For Tampa Bay, Y. P. Sheng, J. K. Choi, S. B. Malakar, S. L. Schofield, D. Welter, E. Yassuda
Reports
Y. Peter Sheng, the Principal Investigator of the proposed study, has developed and applied three-dimensional hydrodynamic models since 1972. These models were developed for a variety of water bodies (including estuaries, lakes, and coastal waters) for a variety of government agencies (e.g., USEPA, USGS, SBNEP, USAE, SFWMD, and SJRWMD) and petroleum companies (Standard Oil and Mobil) to solve a variety of problems. Basically, the nature of the problem and the water body determines the purpose of the modeling study and hence the features and capabilities of the model.

Interim Nutrient Budgets For Tampa Bay, Gerold Morrison
Reports
This report addresses one task of the nutrient monitoring project, the development of "interim" (i.e., preliminary) annual budgets for the macronutrients nitrogen and phosphorus in Tampa Bay's major sub-basins. For the purposes of the report, those sub-basins are defined as Hillsborough Bay (HB) , Old Tampa Bay (OTB) , Middle Tampa Bay (MTB) , and Lower Tampa Bay (LTB). The report uses the 1 Environmental Protection commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) database and other available info:mation in,an attempt to identify and quantify major sources and slnks for nltrogen and phosphorus within the Tampa Bay system.

A Plan Of Study Submitted To The Florida Department Of Environmental Regulation Southwest District, Department Of Sanitary Sewers Bay Study Group
Reports
The proposed study will examine effects of nutrient limitation on phytoplankton growth rates in Tampa Bay. The response of growth rate to changes in nutrient additions will be indicated through changes in algal biomass (chlorophyll-a) and fixation of CO2 (C‑14 uptake). The selected method is similar to methods currently used by the states of Maryland and Virginia for determination of nutrient limitation in Chesapeake Bay waters (Fisher et al. 1992a and b). The proposed study will, therefore, not only yield valuable information about nutrient limitation in Tampa Bay, but will also allow for comparison of information between Tampa Bay and …

Recent Improvements Of Water Quality And Biological Indicators In Hillsborough Bay, A Highly Impacted Subdivision Of Tampa Bay, Florida, J.O. R. Johansson, R. R. Lewis Iii
Reports
Hillsborough Bay, the eastern uppermost section of the Tampa Bay system, is surrounded by a large metropolitan complex, supports extensive industrial activity, and serves as a major shipping port of fertilizer products. The Bay was determined to be highly eutrophic during the late 1960s. The City of Tampa's primary sewage treatment plant and runoff from fertilizer industry activities were considered as the major sources of excessive nutrient loading. Loadings form both these sources have been reduced during the last 10 years, which has probably been the leading cause of improved water quality parameters such as water clarity, dissolved oxygen, and …

Radiochemistry And Sedimentology Of Surficial Mud-Dominated Deposits, Hillborough Bay, Florida, Gregg R. Brooks, Hepsi D. Zsoldos, Robert H. Byrne, Larry J. Doyle
Reports
Hillsborough Bay is the northeast lobe of Tampa Bay, the largest open water estuary on Florida's west coast. For a complete description of the setting and previous works, the reader is referred to Doyle, et al. (1989). The Phase I study of fine-grained sediments in Hillsborough Bay (Brooks and Doyle, 1989) established distribution patterns and average accumulation rates of mud-dominated sediments at selected sites within the Bay over the past several thousand years. Phase II of the study, the focus of this investigation concentrates on the uppermost 50-100 cm. of the sediment column, or those sediments believed to have been …

Long-Term Monitoring Of Water Quality And Biological Indicators In Hillsborough Bay, Tampa Bay, Florida, Bay Study Group, J. O. R. Johansson
Reports
The Bay . study Group of the City of Tampa has conducted an extensive monitoring program of water quality and various biological indicator organisms in Hillsborough Bay and Middle Tampa Bay since 1978 (Figure 1). Hillsborough Bay has generally had the poorest water quality of the Tampa Bay subsections. The monitoring program started as a comprehensive study of phytoplankton productivity and standing crop to evaluate anticipated future effects of domestic wastewater pollution abatement as the City of Tampa converted its wastewater treatment process from primary to state of the art nitro~en removal. The Bay stud¥ Group is the only organization …

Size Classification Of Bed Sediment And Selection Of Resuspension Monitoring Sites In Upper Tampa Bay, Florida, David H. Schoellhamer, Southwest Florida Water Management District (Sfwmd), City Of Tampa, City Of St. Petersburg, Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, Tampa Port Authority
Reports
The size classification of surficial bed sediments in upper Tampa Bay, Florida, including Hillsborough Bay, Old Tampa Bay, and middle Tampa Bay south of the Interbay Peninsu la, was determined during 1987-89. Fathometer transects were performed throughout the study area to determine the reflective characteristics of the bed, and grab samples were collected to relate the fathometer data to size classifications of sediments. The data collected during this study indicate that fine bed sediments are most abundant in Hillsborough Bay and least abundant in the southern part of the study area closest to the mouth of Tampa Bay. Generally, the …

Recent Areal Expansion Of Seagrass Meadows In Tampa Bay, Florida: Real Bay Improvement Or Drought-Induced?, R. R. Lewis Iii, K. D. Haddad, J.O. R. Johansson
Reports
Johansson and Lewis have documented improvements in water quality apparently associated with concurrent improvements to sewage treatment, particularly at the City of Tampa's Hookers Point Sewage Treatment Plant. These improvements are at least partially responsible for the significant decreases in chlorophyll a and increase in water clarity documented in Hillsborough Bay and Middle Tampa Bay.

Reports
The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County requested on August 29, 1990 that the City of Tampa, Department of Sanitary Sewers, supply information which would provide justification for continued variance from the 1 mg/l effluent limitations of phosphorous for the Hookers Point AWWTP. It was also requested that long-term water quality trends in Hillsborough Bay and Tampa Bay be documented in support of the phosphorous variance.
